When Kris Mueller was a teenager and received her very first paycheck, she purchased a Pentax 35mm camera; at the time, it was one of the most popular cameras on the market. Ever since then, she has carried a camera with her wherever she goes. From school functions to town events and everywhere in between, this Middlebury Township employee hopes her photos enable others to see things they might have missed otherwise.

Of the pumpkins, she says, “No two pumpkins are alike. They’re all different. I tried to capture the distinctiveness of each of them.” And about a small waterfall at the River Villas: “I wanted to catch the bubbles and splashes and how the water just dances across the rocks.”

ColorKris is drawn to images that capture bursts of color along with the play of light. “Those no clouds in the sky blue days really bring out bursts of color in pictures,” she says. “The elk in front of the library, he’s a character, full of color. And how many libraries actually have a dressed-up elk in front of it?” With the wagon of mums, “The variety of color just exploded on the backdrop of the town.”

“Sunflowers are one of my favorite things to photograph, especially on a clear, blue day. The combination of the yellow flowers and the blue sky really brightens people’s days!”

The Repaving of Main Street is Done!The town offices extend a big thank you to all for your patience during the process. Now that we have a smooth street to travel upon, please remember that our streets are for everyone: cars, trucks, motorcycles, school buses, buggies, walkers, run-ners and bicyclists.

• If you find yourself behind a buggy or school bus, slow down.

• Be alert while crossing Main Street: it is a state highway and a major truck route.

• Keep an eye out for the increased number of people walking and bik-ing. Let’s all look out for each other and follow the rules of the road.

Pumpkinvine Nature Trail UpdateAnother project just completed last month is the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail from the tunnel under US 20 to east of the Dairy Queen on north

Main Street. This 2.5 mile section is part of the 16 mile trail from Goshen to Shipshewana. We’re seeing a large number of bicyclists, walkers and runners using the trail as a local commuter route and also as a destination for active people from near and far who are interest-ed in improving their quality of life through exercise in a safe, scenic environment.

Trails of MiddleburyFinally, the Town is developing a pedestrian-friendly transportation system that will provide connectivity to key destinations throughout the area. This system is called the Trails of Middlebury. The backbone of the trails is the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail. This system will provide a safe, non-motorized option to get to var-ious destinations in our community. To learn more about the trails, you can attend the Trails of Middlebury Celebration at Krider Gardens Park on Saturday, September 7th. Trails of Middlebury CelebrationSaturday, September 7thEvents start at 11 am at Krider GardensThe Friends of Middlebury Parks and the Middlebury Parks Department invite the public to celebrate the completion of the Middlebury sections of the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail and to share with everyone the plan for the pedestrian-friendly Trails of Middlebury.

This event will feature a Try-Athlon, where you can “Try” three separate events as well as “Try” samples of local food and beverages.

9:30 am – 11 am - Registration 11 am - 1st event ~ 1 mile challenge 11:30 am - 2nd event ~ 5K Walk /Run 12:45 pm - 3rd event ~ Bike ride 12 pm - 3 pm - Hospitality Tent open Pay for one event. “Try” all three events! (Participation in all events is optional.) Participants receive $5 worth of tasting tickets for the Hospitality Tent.

Registration:Individuals: $30Family Rate $90 (up to 5 members of same household) Registration forms are available at Middlebury Town Hall, local businesses and the Middlebury Parks Facebook Page. Proceeds will fund signage and maintenance for the Trails of Middlebury.

Riverbend Park Gets Riverbank RestorationThe trail along the river in Riverbend Park has been eroding for many years and began to be a liability.

The Middlebury Parks Department partnered with LaGrange County Conservation District and Little Elkhart Chapter of Trout Unlimited (LECTU) to receive funds from a Great Lakes Commission Grant. The grant paid for the design and the materials to stabilize the river bank. Over 110 ton of rock was placed along this bank to deflect the force of the water, thus reducing the erosion and stabilizing the bank. Lunker structures were built and placed at the bottom of the eroded river bank. These lunkers give support for the bank, while providing great habitat for fish and other aquatic species. Over 300 hours of volunteer labor counted as the match to the grant, meaning the Parks Department did not have to spend any money on this project!

On September 7, the Boys & Girls Club is holding a charity cycling event called “Gran Fondo,” the Italian term for “cy-cling event.”

Said Lara Wheeler, Associate Executive Director, “We are thrilled to offer this type of event to members of the com-munity. This is unlike any other event we host throughout the year, and with over 300 children attending the Boys and Girls Club daily, we need and appreciate the support of the community.”

This year marks the second year for the popular event and is open to partici-pants of all ages and cycling abilities. Beginning at 9 am, participants have the choice to embark on two different rides.

The Family Fun Ride begins at the Indi-ana Chair Frame parking lot located near Dairy Queen. The ride will take place on the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail and

features SAG stations (Support and Gear) along the way. Registration for a family of up to four people costs $25.00 per person, with each additional person $5.00 extra. Children 5 and under are free.

More serious riders will embark on the Metric Century Bike Ride. Registration costs $50.00 with a goal of an additional $50.00 in donations. Riders will meet at the Boys and Girls Club parking lot to enjoy a beautiful 62-mile ride through rural Northern Indiana. SAGs are available on the longer ride, including in Emma and Howe.

Wheeler explains that one of the core programs at The Club focuses on healthy lifestyles, where leaders teach students about healthy life decisions.

“In the past year, we have expanded our healthy lifestyles initiative to include our club families,” she said. Registration forms and information can be found online at www.bgcmiddlebury.org, or at the Boys & Girls Club.

All participants will receive an event t-shirt. Those who raise $100 in donations will receive a special sport tech shirt.

Started nine years ago by resident Nean Smith as a result of her personal strug-gle to beat cancer, Middlebury’s Walk for a Cure has become an expected and anticipated event in the community each fall.

Hundreds of people continue to show up, serious about the subject but cele-brating life together.

As a matter of fact, so many people attend that the event had to move from the Essenhaus Conference Center to a bigger space.

This year the Walk will be on Saturday, October 5, at Orchard View Elementary. Doors open at 8 am, and the Walk begins at 9 am.

“I’m constantly amazed at how this awesome town rallies around this walk, either through their sponsorships or through their participation,” said Smith.

Between now and the event, look for the Middlebury Walks for a Cure booth at the Fall Festival where you can register and make an on-the-spot donation. You’ll also find registration forms throughout the town.

Michelle Grewe, Guest SpeakerMiddlebury has cheered on one of its own families as over a year ago, teen Sam Grewe was diagnosed with os-teosarcoma. Sam now has no evidence of cancer.

Sam’s mom Michelle will be sharing a portion of their journey as part of the event.

Said Michelle, “Now that we’re through the tough part with Sam, my focus has shifted to talking about Childhood Cancer Awareness, which I will share at the Walk.”

Michelle also emphasizes her grati-tude to all of Middlebury: “When we were in the heat of the battle, I was in a fog. I wasn’t able to thank people the way I wanted.

“I want to use this moment to express my appreciation to everyone who helped. Big or small, it doesn’t matter. Thank you.”

A Journey with

In 1985, Jayco founder Lloyd Bontrager was killed in an airplane crash along with his son, Wendall. His daughter, Cindy Bontrager Hawkins, 20 years old at the time, never sat in a small plane again until recently, 28 years later.

Cindy Hawkins is pictured with her son Kevin, an aviation major at Hesston College. Kevin’s love for flying made Cindy confront her fear of flying, due to a family accident.

Nineteen years ago, I birthed a son with a giant genetic tendency to take flight.

Three years ago that same son began flying lessons, and I began my beg-ging, pleading, and arguing with God: couldn’t someone else’s son love flying, and my son could just love cars, video games, and girls?

Kevin’s dream was to fly the big stuff to far-off locations. While I didn’t want to stand in the way of his aspirations, needless to say, I couldn’t find peace. Turmoil was destroying me. Fear was consuming me. Worry was overtaking me. I had to let go somehow.

Realizing in order to be part of Kevin’s dream, I had to overcome my fear of being in small planes. So, with much trepidation, I signed up for ground school and flying lessons at our local airport this past March.

Roger Yoder, owner of New Horizons Aviation and a personal friend, was my instructor. He knows of my background and what haunts me. He knows of my emotions from the events surrounding Dad’s death. Roger stood with me on the airfield while Kevin completed his first solo flight, and I had tears streaming down my face, choking back sobs. Roger patiently prepared me for the moment when I would fly.

On Friday, July 12, my trusty co-pilot by my side, my son in a plane in front of me, and the Great Pilot in the Sky surrounding me, I sat in the cockpit of a small plane, ready to fly. After announcing our im-pending takeoff, Kevin radioed,“Sounds great Mom!” There I sat watching my son take off, and then it was my turn.

I powered up, kept my feet playing on the rudders so that I could hopefully keep the plane’s nose on the yellow center line. Roger said once the plane gets enough speed it will actually take off on its own. And it did! It really did!

I took off, turned toward Middlebury, flew over our home, circled Jayco, and did a fly-by of Hawkins Water Tech.

Twice, I verbally told myself to breathe because I realized I was holding my breath. Then I asked the instructor to take the controls so I could relax a bit

and just enjoy the view from up there. I of course informed Roger that he would also be landing that thing—I got it up there, but he would have to get it down.

Once we landed on terra firma, I went inside to wait for Kevin to land. My legs were wobbly, my arms and hands shaking, and I felt nauseated. When I finally arrived home, I made a beeline to my bed for a two-hour nap. I was exhausted!

That day gave me so much more than freedom from my huge fear. That day confirmed God is bigger than my fears; He replaces fear with freedom and peace.

That day was also when I became part of my own son’s aspirations of flying. Some day, Kevin will be flying me wher-ever I want to go, as often as I can go.He’ll be sorry that I’m working on over-coming my fear.

Middlebury’s Dr. Kaminsky tells us how to deal with pesky ticks.

PreventionThe best way to avoid having to deal with ticks is to use preventative measures.

There are many different products on the market these days to use on pets including topical treatments, collars, sprays and dips. Use a product that goes on the outside of the animal’s body rather than just shots or pills designed for preventing ticks and their diseases. Visit your veteri-narian for the most effective brands.

Knowing where ticks are often located is another great method of prevention. Ticks won’t commonly be found in places where the grass is short and there aren’t a lot of bushes or trees. Ticks prefer tall grass, bushes or branches where they can climb up and wait for a person or animal to get close enough for them to hitch a ride.

RemovalIf you do find a tick on a pet or yourself, Dr. Kaminsky gives the following tips on how to properly remove them:

1. Don’t touch. That is, don’t touch it with your bare hands. Use tweezers, a glove, or even a tissue to grasp the tick.

2. Grasp at the skin line. Be careful not to squeeze the tick to cause any fluid that could be filled with a disease to escape.

3. Pull straight out. Don’t worry, their head won’t get stuck.

If a small hole is left where the tick was removed, use a general antiseptic to clean it. Don’t use matches or any other form of heat to attempt to remove the tick.

As always, keep in touch with your veterinarian to make sure your animal is being properly treated for ticks, as well as up-to-date on their vaccinations.

Two NHS Students Participate in Foreign Language Honors ProgramOver the summer two NHS students spent time in Germany as part of the Indiana University Honors Program in Foreign Languages (IUHPFL). During their summer in Germa-ny, Heather Otto and Morgan Wysong pledged to only use German, attended classes, participated in planned activities and embarked on several excursions to enhance their cultural awareness. 2013-2014 10 Earn IB Diploma

Northridge High School is pleased to announce that 10 students in the graduating class of 2013 earned the Interna-

tional Baccalaureate Diploma. This challenging course of study requires students to complete and excel in six core academic areas. Additionally, students striving to earn this prestigious diploma must also compose a 4,000 word extended essay, and also engage in 150 hours of extra-curricular work. All of these requirements are completed over a two year period, then shipped internation-ally to be evaluated by other educators worldwide. Only students who earn a certain number of marks, or points in all of these areas are awarded the IB Diploma. Recipients of this diploma are often awarded credits and scholarships through the college or university they choose to attend following graduation.

Tom Yoder Remembers...

RemembeR when

Middlebury native Tom Yoder is an active participant on the Facebook page called

I Grew Up in Middlebury, Indiana. Here are just a few of the photos he’s shared:

Tom Yoder has recently authored a book titled, “My Thoughts Exactly: The Dirt on Gardening.” But gardening and writ-ing are not the only skills Yoder has mastered in his lifetime. When younger, Yoder was a meat cutter in his father’s store, Yoder’s Market in Middlebury.

“My father bought the market in 1946 where the existing bank building is now. Then we moved across the street to the old bakery building. When Harding’s came to town, we couldn’t support three families with the business so I went into real estate,” he said. Despite loving the work he did as a real estate broker for 11 years, Yoder did not like the ups and

downs that came with the industry so he went back into meat cutting for a while and then worked at Everette’s Garden Center in Goshen.

“I write about my experience growing up, reminiscing, and new products that are on the market,” he said. His book is a compilation of 52 of his col-umns he wrote over the years for the Goshen News.

His book was released in April and is available for sale at the Cinnamon Stick in Middle-bury. With 16 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, and golf nearly every day, the Yoders have a full life.

Middlebury’s Fourth Annual Riverfest

Four-year-old Madison Viglione, granddaughter of Joe Viglione of Middlebury, points to where she is from on her favorite rain barrel. This is one of five barrels decorat-ed by students from Middlebury Schools which were auctioned off at this year’s Riverfest.

It’s still there! Forrest Wanberg points to the hand-hewn wooden beams of the Old Mill inside the Wanberg popcorn plant in Middlebury. Built in 1838, it is both the oldest building in Middlebury and the town’s longest continuously running business. Touring the inside of this mill and hearing a talk about the seven mills that once existed on the Little Elkhart River was a new feature for those who attended this year’s Riverfest.

The public got the chance to see fish from the Little Elkhart River close up and learn about the quality of this trout stream that flows through north-ern Indiana. Daragh Deegan, an aquatic biologist for the City of Elkhart’s Public Works and Utilities department, talks about the carp in his hand. It is a non-native species introduced to the Great Lakes region.

The chestnut lamprey is a native

species of Indiana’s waterways.

The Little Elkhart River, with its waters kept cold by underground springs, has good water quality and temperatures cool enough to be a good environment for trout.

Gloria salavarria photographed and wrote about this year’s riverfest, held at Middle-bury’s riverbend Park on august 17. the annual event, now in its fourth year, is offered by Middlebury Parks to further public awareness of the fine water qual-ity of the little Elkhart river which runs through Elkhart and laGrange counties.

Middlebury Family Physicians has joined Elkhart General Medical Group. The practice has been an integral part of the Middlebury Community for more than 50 years.

Elizabeth Gingrich, M.D. is Board Certified in Family Medicine. Dr. Gingrich completed her medical degree at Westminster Hospital Medical School, London, England. She then completed postgraduate diplomas in Obstetrics and Gynecology (DRCOG) and Child Health (DCH), and Medical and Surgical Internships followed by a three-year general family practice training program in Chesterfield, England. She completed her Family Practice Residency at Georgetown University/Providence Hospital in Washington D.C.

Anna Kragt, M.D. is Board Certified in Family Medicine. Dr. Kragt earned her medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School, Ann Arbor, Michigan. She completed a Family Practice Residency at the Toledo Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program, Toledo, Ohio.

Norman Waggy, M.D. is also Board Certified in Family Medicine. Dr. Waggy earned his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis, Indiana. He also earned a diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene from Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, Liverpool, England. He completed his Family Medicine Residency at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in South Bend, Indiana.
