Standard 5: Sharing powerIntheGarden:Voteeachseasonasaschoolforthecroplisttobeplantedthefollowingseason.Usethegardenasanopportunitytoteachcivicresponsibilityandengagement.

IntheGarden:Allowforwheelchairaccess,andincludeother
elementsinthegardenthataccommodateorappealtothosewithdisabilities.Provideenvironmentaleducationsothatchildrenarebetterpreparedforourchangingworld.

You might think you can’t afford to start a school garden, especially in these hardeconomictimes.However,consideringhowmuchschoolgardenscanteachchildren,canyouaffordnotto?Wehaveseenschoolsrallyaroundthedesiretobuildaschoolgarden inmany resourcefulways, andwearehappy to sharewith you ideasofhowothershavedoneit.

• Adoptaspot,pot,plot,treeorplant
• SellFarmerDseeds,plants,toolsandhomegardenkitsasaschoolfund-raiser(asawelcomealternative to fund-raisingefforts thathavenoenvironmentalbenefit)andextendtheschoolgardenlearningexperiencetochildren’shomesandthroughouttheircommunities.

• “Sell”theopportunitytopaintafloweronawall(perhapsbywherethegardenwillbe)orfence(agreatliteraturetie-intoThe Adventures of Tom Sawyer!)
• Askgrandparentstosponsorthegarden(includetheir“VictoryGarden”stories!Thisisthelastgenerationthatgrewupwiththese!)
• Solicit sponsorship dollars from local businesses (be careful that thesebusinessesrepresentthevaluesyouaretryingtopromotewiththegarden!)
• Applyforgrants,andincludechildrenintheprocess.Grantsupportforgardensisgrowing.
