New Curriculum Computational Thinking Content:

The new computing curriculum requires that students learn about how computers and the internet work. Even though the

Internet is still a young technology, it's hard to imagine life

without it now. Every year, engineers create more devices to integrate with the Internet. This network of networks

criss-crosses the globe and even extends into space. But what makes it work?

Give an understanding of how computers store information;

To begin to explore how computers search for information.

Who should attend: Any practitioner who wants to develop their

understanding of computers

Date: 18th November 2015

Time: 4pm - 5.30pm

Programming - Using Python Content:

Python is a programming language that is freely available and that makes solving a computer problem almost as easy as

writing out one's thoughts about the solution. It can be written once and run on almost any computer without needing

to change the program.

and start designing straight away! Hobbyists, kids and back-yard spaceship builders all agree that SketchUp is the easi-

est, most fun, entirely free 3D drawing tool in the world. We think you will, too.

Objectives of the course:

To give a working knowledge of the programme;

To create a 3D model using Sketch up

To begin to explore the application of Sketch up in the cur-riculum.

Who should attend: KS2 practitioners

Date: 21st October 2015

Time: 4pm - 5.30pm

Barefoot Computing Workshops Content:

Barefoot pr imary comput ing workshops are FREE - they are

designed to equip primary school teachers with the knowledge, skills

and understanding they need to deliver the new computing

curriculum. The workshops are run by volunteers trained by our Barefoot regional partners. The workshops below are

being run by Dr Nick Cook from the Computing School at Newcastle University. He will guide you through using

the Barefoot resources and how they can be used to teach your pupils computer science. The resources can all be found

on the website http://barefootcas.org.uk/

Naace Open Badges The Computing Curriculum can be separated into three

distinct strands; each strand is made up of specific elements, and each of the CPD badges addresses these areas. Level 1

badges recognise your own knowledge of the subject area, Level 2 badges reward your knowledge, reflection and

application of the subject area in your teaching. Level 3 badges acknowledge the sharing of your knowledge with

others. All of the badges are recorded in your digital

backpack with makewav.es.

The badges are recognised and accredited by Naace. We are

proud to be leading the way in the UK by being the first LA to be able to offer and award these certificates for CPD.

Literacy with ICT Boys writing and technology

Reading and writing go hand-in-hand and it is through writing that children learn to formulate thoughts and improve their

creativity and thinking skills. New research published by the National Literacy Trust reveals that boys are half as likely to enjoy

writing as girls and almost a third never or rarely write outside of class.

Broadcaster and children’s author Simon Mayo says:

“It’s so important for boys to find a topic that interests them before they pick up a pen and start writing. I wasn’t particularly

interested in writing at school, I only started to enjoy it later on, but I was hampered by being fantastically slow. When I

started writing the first Itch book, it was as a short story for my son, but then I was completely captivated by the plot and

characters, and the story took over. If you can grab a child’s imagination in the same way, getting them to write about a hobby

or something they really enjoy doing then the whole story writing world is open to them.”

Objectives of the course:

To use he hardware, software and peripherals suggested and consider how they could be used in class to accelerate

attainment in writing;

Facilitate children’s independent consolidation activities;

Know the place of multimedia digital tools within the framework for teaching writing

Who should attend: Literacy Leaders or any Primary Practitioner
