THIS STUDIO FOCUSED ON EMPTY PARKING LOTS IN A PROMINENT NEIGHBORHOOD IN NORTHWEST PORTLAND. CREATING A BARREN ZONE WITHIN A THRIVING NEIGHBORHOOD RICH WITH COMMERCIAL AND HOUSING OPPORTUNITIES THE SITE OFFERED VARIOUS OPPORTUNITIES TO REINTEGRATE IT BACK INTO THE NEIGHBORHOOD. THE COURSE FOCUSED ON INTENSIVE SITE ANALYSIS THAT HELPED CREATE AN URBAN DESIGN CONCEPT PLAN WITH THE INTENTIONS OF REVITALIZING THE CURRENT CONDITIONS.

THIS STUDIO FOCUSED ON A SLIVER OF PROPERTY SURROUNDED BY MAJOR THROUGHFARES AND A FUTURE MAX LIGHT RAIL LINE. UNIQUE SURROUNDING CONDITIONES COUPLED WITH SPECIFIC SITE RESTRAINTS ALLOWED FOR INTENSIVE DESIGN STUDIES THAT HELPED MAXIMIZE THE LIMITED PROPERTY.

Concept Models

The models focused on exploring the tension between the bendind hinges and the protrusion of the bolt. Held in place the planes ‘guide’ movement, light and sounds.

THIS STUDIO PROJECT WAS DRIVEN BY CONCEPTUAL MODELS DERIVED FROM A LOCAL RECLAIMING CENTER. WE THEN INTERPRETED THESE ARTIFACTS INTO ARCHITECTURE THAT REPRESENTED FILM. THE PROGRAM ENTAILED A BREWERY AND THEATER IN A NARROW LOT IN A BUSY NEIGHBORHOOD. THE FINAL DESIGN CAME FROM AN INTERPRETATION OF BENDING DOOR HINGES THAT WERE HELD IN PLACE BY NAILS. THE TENSION & PROTRUSION RESEMBLE LIGHT PENETRATING FILM IN ORDER TO PROJECT A MOVIE.

WHERE A ONCE A THRIVING CHINESE COMMUNITY LIVE NOW SITS AN EMPTY PARKING LOT SURROUNDED BY CRIME AND POVERTY. THROUGH HISTORIC CONTEXTUAL STUDYING AND SITE ANALYSIS, A DESIGN WAS DERIVED TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF AN EMPTY LOT. CREATING CLASSROOM SPACES, A LIBRARY & PERFORMANCE SPACE THE SCHOOL WILL PROVIDE A SPACE FOR COMMUNITY INTERACTION AND REFLECTION ON THE HISTORY OF THE AREA

SITUATED ON THE EDGE OF A WETLAND THIS STUDIO’S PROGRAM WAS TO CREATE AN INTERPRETATIVE LEARNING CENTER FOR THE OAKS BOTTOM WILDLIFE REFUGE. AS ONE WALKS ALONG THE EDGE OF THE WATER ONE EXPERIENCES SPECIFC MOMENTS FRAMED BY THE VEGETATION ALONG THE SHORE LINE THESE EXPERIENCES WHERE THEN REFLECTED INTO A STUDIO PROJECT. THE FINAL DESIGN CONSISTS OF A SERIES OF RAISED BUILDINGS EXTENDING ONTO THE WATER. ORIENTED IN VARIOUS DIRECTIONS. EACH SPACE FRAMES A SERIOUS OF VIEWS ALONG THE HORIZON
