Introduction The RCN 6000 series angle encoders are now available as a series production product. They have

a large hollow shaft with a diameter of 180 mm with all the typical properties of angle encoders

with integral bearing and integrated stator coupling. These properties include high signal quality,

high resolution, IP 64 protection, and easy mounting. This makes the encoders of this new series

an interesting alternative to the modular angle encoders, especially for rotary axes in machine

tools that require a large center hole.

Product description Unlike the other angle encoders in the RCN Family, the RCN 6000 features a reflected light scanning method and a graduation that is applied directly to the metal bearing ring using the METALLUR patented process. This made it possible to realize compact dimensions and similarly large mounting tolerances as for the other angle encoders with integral bearing and integrated stator coupling. The RCN 6000 series encoders are characterized by the following properties:

Absolute angle encoder with integral bearing and integrated stator coupling

Hollow shaft diameter of 180 mm

Overall height of 44 mm

IP 64 protection (EN 60529)

System accuracy of ±2”

Position error per signal period ≤ ±0.3”

Interfaces including EnDat22, Fanuc05 and Mit03-4 are available

EnDat22 with functional safety (for applications up to SIL 2 as per EN 61508 (further basis for testing EN 61800-5-2) and category 3, PL d as per EN ISO 13849-1: 2015)

Fault exclusion for loosening of the mechanical connection is available

Adapter cable can be connected via quick disconnect

Mechanically permissible speed ≤ 200 rpm (higher speeds are possible depending on the operating temperature)

The permissible speed is influenced by the operating temperature, meaning the temperature

prevailing in the angle encoder environment. For example, a maximum speed of 200 rpm is

permissible at an operating temperature of 50 °C, and a maximum speed of 500 rpm at an

operating temperature of 20 °C.

Like with the other angle encoders with integral bearing, during mounting - the housing is firmly

connected by an integral mounting flange and a centering collar to the stationary machine part (M6

screws). The shaft can be connected in two different ways:

Using 16 tapped blind holes (M6) on the front of the hollow shaft with a mounting element that is suitable for the respective design (not included in delivery), or as an alternative

Using 16 through holes (Ø 6.4 mm) on the front of the hollow shaft for securing it to the measured shaft with M6 mounting screws.

Both mounting options permit a mechanical fault exclusion. Apart from the mounting screws,

no other aids for mechanical fault exclusion are needed for the RCN 6000 series (no catch ring).

Sales argumentation The new RCN 6000 series encoders are ideal for rotary axes that must meet high accuracy requirements and must have large center holes. The encoders of this series feature a hollow shaft with a diameter of 180 mm and provide IP 64 protection. When compared to other solutions available on the market, this significantly reduces the effort required by the customer for protective measures. The mounting effort for the RCN 6000 series encoders is also minimal, because they feature an integral bearing and an integrated stator coupling.

The operating temperature, i.e. the temperature in the vicinity of the angle encoder, infl uences the permissible rotational speed (see fi gure). For example, at a working temperature of 50 °C, the max. permissible speed is 200 rpm; at 20 °C it is 500 rpm. Higher speeds are also permissible for short periods (up to 800 rpm). In this case, consultation is required.

Functional safety

With its RCN 6310 absolute angle encoder, HEIDENHAIN offers the ideal solution for position acquisition for rotational axes in safety-related applications. In conjunction with a safe control, the encoders can be used as single-encoder systems for applications with control category SIL 2 (as per EN 61508) and performance level d” (as per EN ISO 13849).

Reliable transmission of the position is based on two independently generated absolute position values and on error bits, which are then provided to the safe control. The functions of the encoder can be used for numerous safety functions in the complete system as per EN 61800-5-2.

The RCN 6310 angle encoders provide a safe absolute position value at all times—including immediately after switch-on. Purely serial data transfer takes place via the bidirectional EnDat 2.2 interface.

Fault exclusion against loosening of the

mechanical connection

There are different possibilities for attaching the RCN 6000 series that ensure mechanical fault exclusion. Mounting screws are used for mounting the housing and fl ange, as well as for the shaft coupling.

This way, fault exclusion can be realized for the loosening of the mechanical connection between the encoder and machine shaft or the customer’s mounting components. The following torque of the encoder is to be taken into account when designing the mechanical fault exclusion for further connections used exclusively by the customer:

In addition to the data interface, the mechanical connection of the encoder to the motor is also relevant to safety. Table D16 of the standard for electrical drives, EN 61800-5-2, defi nes the loosening of the mechanical connection

between the encoder and drive as a fault that requires consideration. Since it cannot be guaranteed that the control will detect such errors, in many cases a fault exclusion for the loosening of the mechanical connection is required.
