SAVE TAJMAHAL

Taj Mahal was built as a team; without a team, it was a far dream.”

Page 2: Save tajmahal

TAJMAHAL WAS BUILT 350 YEARS AGO BY THE MUGHAL EMPEROR SHAH JAHAN AS A REMEMBERENCE FOR HIS WIFE MUMTAZ MAHAL. AMONG THE INDIAN MONUMENTS, TAJMAHAL IS CONSIDERED TO BE ONE OF THE SEVEN WONDERS OF THE WORLD. THE TAJMAHAL WAS BUILT OF MARBLE,TURQUOISE, JADE, LAPIS LAZULI AND OTHER PRECIOUS STONES. BUT ITS SHIMMERING WHITE WALLS HAVE BEGUN TO FADE TO THE EFFECT OF POLLUTION FROM VEHICLES, FACTORIES AND WORKSHOPS IN THE NEARBY CITY OF AGRA. TAJMAHAL HAS BEEN SERIOUSLY DAMAGED BY THESE PROBLEMS.

DESPITE SERIOUS EFFORTS BY THE INDIAN GOVERNMENT TO CURB AIR POLLUTION AROUND THE SEVENTEENTH CENTURY MONUMENT, ITS SHIMMERING WHITE MARBLE IS TURNING YELLOW. AIRBORNE PARTICLES BEGAN SETTLING DOWN ON THE TAJ MAHAL’S SHIMMERING WHITE MARBLE, IMPARTING IT A YELLOWISH TINGE. TAJ MAHAL IS AGAIN FACING A SERIOUS PROBLEM. THE MINISTRY OF ENVIRONMENT, FOUND THAT POLLUTION LEVELS IN THE CITY OF AGRA, WHERE THE TAJ MAHAL IS LOCATED, HAD RISEN SIGNIFICANTLY OVER RECENT YEARS AS A RESULT OF GROWTH IN INDUSTRY, TRAFFIC AND POLLUTION.

More recent threats have come from environmental pollution on the banks of Yamuna River including acid rain due to the Mathura Oil Refinery, which was opposed by Supreme Court of India directives. The pollution has been turning the Taj Mahal yellow. To control the pollution, the Indian government has set up the Taj Trapezium Zone around the monument .Concerns for the tomb's structural integrity have recently been raised because of a decline in the groundwater level in the Yamuna river basin which is falling at a rate of around 5 feet a year.

What on earth is happening?

Why is the Tajmahal turning yel low?

Page 8: Save tajmahal

It is turning yellow because of air pollution. Researchers and other people have tried to clean the

Tajmahal, but it never really gets clean because it always turns yellow again. They spent about $150 million

dollars trying to clean it. Most of the air pollution comes from factories and burning of substances

around the Tajmahal. In future, it may turn into black color. But researchers said they will try to find a way to permanently clean the

Tajmahal.

• In 1998, when the white marble of the famous monument began to turn yellow, warning bells went off. India's Supreme Court ordered that more than £90 million be spent on restoring the country's most famous monument. Conservationists have taken

• a number of steps to curb pollution in Agra which is a growing manufacturing centre. Cars have been banned from within 500 meters of the monument. Diesel-run rickshaws have been replaced by cleaner vehicles, a road by-pass has been created and there has been heavy investment in a refinery to reduce emissions.

• But despite these actions, a new report has found that pollution levels have increased dramatically; so much so that emissions of nitrogen oxide have reached higher levels than those of twelve years ago.

Pollution in Yamuna River has increased rapidly and the protection of this river includes several governmental steps. Yamuna is unfortunately one of the most polluted rivers in the world, especially in the banks near New Delhi, the capital of India. Almost 57% of the city’s waste is dumped into the river. Numerous attempts have been made to clean it; however the efforts have brought few changes.

Protection of Yamuna River The government of India has prepared elaborate plans to reconstruct the sewage system and also the drainage system that empty into the river. In the context of river pollution, certain actions of cleaning river have been strictly taken by the Ministry of Environment and Forests of the Government of

India in 12 towns of Haryana, 8 towns of Uttar Pradesh and Delhi under an action plan called the Yamuna Action Plan (YAP), which is being implemented since 1993 by the National River Conservation Directorate (NRCD) of the Ministry of Environment and Forests.

‘No mechanism to protect Yamuna’A report filed by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) in the Supreme Court on Thursday shows that a total pollution load of over 300 tonnes flow into river Yamuna every day from 22 drains connecting it in Delhi and its neighboring regions. There has been no mechanism to protect the river, a water source for the teeming National Capital, from the untreated sewage being dumped into it through drains, which were actually built to carry storm water.
