It is also referred to as the World, the Blue Planet, and

Terra. Home to millions of species, including humans, the

Earth is the only place in the universe where life is known

to exist.



It is estimatedthat only one eighthof the surface of theEarth is suitable for humans to live on— three-quarters arecovered by oceansand half of the

land area is either desert (14%), highmountains (27%), or other less suitableterrain.



The Earth is wrapped

in a delicate web of

environmental systems that

interconnect. Food chains,

climate cycles, ocean

currents, animal migrations,

carbon/oxygen exchange

and so on.

We are now aware that

changes in any one of these

systems can have a huge

impact. Other changes such

as cutting down forests toharvest wood and clear new

farmland destroy wild life

habitats, and in many cases

the animals themselves.

It even drives many native peoples from the land. It oftencreates top soil erosion and destroys the forest watershedthat provides clean drinking water to cities downstream. Andit slows the exchange of carbon dioxide into oxygen, which

in turn causes global temperatures to rise.



Global warming is due to the buildup of greenhousegases produced by human activities such as theburning of fossil fuels to generate electricity or bycar exhausts.



This will cause rising sea levels, permanently

submerging current coastal areas, islands, andsome other low-lying regions. The cause is

simple: the polar ice packs will begin melting.

Secondly we have all realized that global warming means hotter

temperatures generally, and more severe summer heat waves. This

may in turn lead to water shortages and even power shortages as air

conditioners and refrigeration systems work over-time.



Climate change may be a big problem, but there are

many little things we can do to make a difference. If we

try, most of us can do our part to reduce the amount of

greenhouse gases that we put into the atmosphere. Many

greenhouse gases come from things we do every day.

we can make it happen.

Save ElectricityWhenever we use

electricity, we helpput greenhouse

gases into the air.

By turning off lights,

the television, and

the computer whenyou are through with

them, you can help

a lot.



Bike, Bus,and Walk

You cansave energyby sometimestaking the bus,riding a bike,

or walking.



Plant Trees

Planting trees

is fun and a great

way to reducegreenhouse

gases. Trees

absorb carbon

dioxide, which isa greenhouse

gas, from the air.



RecycleRecycle cans,bottles, plastic bags,

and newspapers.When you recycle,you send less trashto landfills and youhelp save naturalresources, like trees,

oil, and elementssuch as aluminum.



Reduce Your Amount of Trash

This simply means, use less stuff! If youbring less stuff home, you have less stuff to throw out!

Bring your own bags to the store. Buy food in bulk, not individual servings.

Use reusable containers for leftovers.

Cut back on fast food meals, they pollutemore than your arteries!



Recycle batteries

Batteries pollute the soil and groundwater.



Talk to Your

Family and

FriendsTalk to your

family and

friends about

climate change.

Let them knowwhat you've

learned.



And MostImportant of all...

SAVE WATER!

Don’t do

this!

Turn off the tap

while

brushing

your teeth.

Don’t leave

Sprinklers on

for too long!

Collect water while waiting for

it to heat up, then

dump it in the toilet.

Don’t be a drip - fix any dripping taps inside

(and outside) of your house and

save yourself up to 4 litres of water a day.



Don’t leave the hose on while washing your car!



Only use the amount of water you’ll need!



Call the water company if you see that

there is water running in the streets

so that they fix the problem.



Don’t use water to wash

sidewalks or streets!



Don’t fill your swimming

pool up to the top!
