So obviously, his grades are sinking and there is no way his folks can drill any sense into his head.

Alok. Sharman Joshi plays Alok. He is not a complex guy at all. He has his goals clearly charted out. He comes from a very poor family. All he has seen all his life is struggle and he is sick of it. T he only way out is to make loads of money. And the path that clearly points to those wads of rupees or hopefully dollars, is a good education. So right now what this simpleton wants is good grades!

3 Idiots follows the hilarious events that constitute the life of three guys, who are as different as they are similar. The movie is the celluloid adaptation of Chetan Bhagat’s book Five Point Someone, and though the movie varies from the book in that the protagonists are much younger in Chetan’s narrative, the humour is absolutely in place. Aamir Khan looks completely at ease playing a young guy, a complete departure from his macho Ghajini image. Kareena Kapoor plays his love interest and the chemistry between the two is absolutely scintillating.

Hari. Madhavan plays Hari. He wants to look handsome like Ryan. He wishes every single day that he had the same kind of charm and charisma that made Ryan the centre of attraction where ever he went. In his effort to imitate Ryan’’’’’’’’’’” and his coolitude, he always ends up making a mess. Vijay, who had a poor showing with his previous two movies, is need of a hit, and those who have watched the movie, have said that the movie will hit the mark. What with Vijay Antony’s music striking all the right notes, Vettaikaran has already one feather in its hat! From the trailer that recently released, one can see that the movie is tightly packed with the typical mass action and dialogues, that Vijay’s fans crave.

It seems just like yesterday that the lean, lanky and dusky Vijay made a very ambitious debut with Nalaiya Theerpu under the direction of his father, S.A. Chandrasekar. But that was way back in 1992, more than fifteen years ago. And when that movie released, nobody knew that

the young actor, would soon be one of the biggest names in Kollywood! Today as he awaits the release of Vettaikaaran, the actor is also on the verge of reaching a new milestone. Vettaikaaran will be Vijay’s 49th movie, which means it won’t be long before the big Five-Zero gets made. Directed by S.P. Simbu may not have the rep of a Saint, but then who really wants that? What’s the point of deep dimples and boyish charm, if you’re going to let a halo come in the way? We love the bad boys and their killer ways, and that’s why notorious as he is, Simbu continues to wield a power over the audience. He cannot go by unnoticed. However, Simbu is a changed man now. In look and person, he has evolved. He has outgrown the craving for mass movies, though he will continue to make them. And he has outgrown the unkempt look, though he may continue to sport it!

S: What’s the change all about? Simbu: It’s all in the mind. After a point of time, after doing a lot of the same stuff, you have to stop and take stock of things. All along, I’ve been doing movies, picking scripts that I felt I fit in. I was not doing too much of an analysis on how the script fit into my career. I did not put too much emphasis on that. But now I think it’s time I did. I don’t want to do many movies in a year, anymore. I have matured. I’m going to be more choosey about the projects that I take on.


S: Vallavan, Kettavan, Poda Podi... All hyped. But except Vallavan none of them got made.Simbu: With Vallavan, I was trying to do something different. As a director, I believe I have more freedom to explore. I can move away from the clichés try out new stories and new characters. The truth about Vallavan, is that I tried to tell a story that showed some of the gray areas of real-life. There’s so much more to a relationship than what cinema usually shows. I showed that, and maybe that’s what people could not accept. As for the other two, they were very ambitious projects of mine. Both very different scripts – very interesting, fun ones. I was so completely gung-ho about making them. But for various reasons, they had to be put on hold. That is why I have decided to be more choosey about my films!

S: The Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa Experience...Simbu: Working with Gautham Menon and team, has been a fabulous experience, I must say. It’s not all partying and fun, all the time – but it’s been a good blend of fun and work. After doing movies like Silambattam and Kaalai, I could have once again picked a script in that genre, something which the masses would enjoy, but I wanted to do something different. When Gautham and I were talking one day, he said he had a couple of story ideas. The first one that he told me was an action theme, something which I have done and my fans have seen me in. The second was a love-story and that’s what I picked. I was determined to do a love story... something on the lines of Minnale, is what I told him. The story came to Gautham before me, so I told him not to worry about changing it to fit my so-called image, because ultimately what my fans want is good entertainment. And that is something Gautham guarantees.

S: Gaming & Food at Sathyam Cinemas...Simbu: I’m not a hard-core gamer, but I do enjoy an evening at Blur. They have a whole interesting range of games to offer. But my most frequent picks are the Football and Vega games. It’s a lot of fun. As for food, of the many foodie offerings at Sathyam, my pick is ID! And I must emphasise on the fact that I am not a big fan of vegetarian food. I next-to-never stop at a vegetarian restaurant. But the food at ID is super, even for a big time non-vegetarian like me!

S: Unforgettable experiences at Sathyam...Simbu: I’ve watched lots of movies at Sathyam, long before I became a hero. Like I said before, I enjoyed the entire experience, so obviously now to watch my own movies playing there is a great feeling! But the most unforgettable thing was when my movie in which I debuted as hero released, it premiered in all five theatres at Sathyam! I’ve been a regular at Sathyam to watch movies and today my movies are releasing there.

S: Sathyam and you...Simbu: Sathyam has been a big part of growing up in Chennai. A big part of my teens was spent watching some great movies at Sathyam. When director Shankar’s Jeans released I must have watched it at least 15 times in Sathyam! For as far back as I can remember, I’ve never needed to call a few days ahead and reserve tickets. Any day, any show – I just call, and I’ll have a seat or how many ever I want! That’s the kind of close relationship I share with Sathyam

S: The Sathyam Cinemas experience...Simbu: Wherever I go, I am always raving about Sathyam. Even when I was in the US recently, I remember telling someone, that we have a better theatre in Chennai, in Sathyam. The whole ambience and comfort at Sathyam is amazing. No matter where I watch the premiere of a movie, if it’s playing in Sathyam, I will make it a point to watch it there as well. Only then do I feel like I’ve actually watched the movie and experienced it completely. Sathyam has come a long way and I am one of its biggest patrons. I just love the entire movie-going experience here!

“I love acting because I love to tell stories. I like being in movies that have a great story. I’m not so interested in being a Hollywood star. It’s a job, you know. It feels like hard work. Kristen has had her share of big banner movies and small humble projects – she treats both with the same zest, but clearly aware of the limitations of both type of movies. “I start everything from the same place, with that sense of responsibility. On a bigger movie, you have to be aware that you can only control your aspect of the film. It’s nice to be on a smaller movie because you’re working with your friends and you feel so close-knit. It’s your movie and you can do anything you want,” she asserts. “I know many stars who treat acting like they were saving lives or something. I just see it as a creative expression. It’s my passion and another’s entertainment.”

The success of Twilight has rubbed off on her career as well and she is getting offers to do a whole bunch of varied characters! “This weird thing happens when you’re in a movie that has some level of success. People start offering you all kinds of things and they just expect you to do them because they’ll be good for your career. It’s not about the project’s integrity or anything like that,” explains the actress. As for how life has changed with Twilight, she says, “My life hasn’t changed. Most circumstances I find myself in are different than they were a year ago, but I myself haven’t changed...however a normal 18-year-old girl would change in a year. But it makes things so much easier. I would do it for free every day [even] if nobody saw it. I cannot describe how good it feels to actually have something that is truly into your heart and soul actually affecting people. And that’s amazing. So that’s the biggest change.”│December 2009│36
