INTRODUCTION: SRI SATYA SAI NIGAMAGAMAM IS A CONSTITUENT OF SRI SATYA SAI CENTRAL TRUST, PRASANTHI

NILAYAM, A PUBLIC CHARITABLE INSTITIUTION, FOUNDED BY BHAGAWAN SRI SATHYA SAI BABA. THE ARCHITECTURE, DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION WAS ENTRUSTED TO L&T ECC WHICH ENGAGED

MR.R. CHAKRAPANI AS THE CONSULTING ARCHITECT FOR THE PROJECT WHO SHAPED THE SUGGESTIONS OF BHAGAWAN SRI SATHYA SAI BABA INTO A CONCRETE REALITY. WORK COMMENCED IN AUGUST 1991.

THE NIGAMAGAMAM WAS DECLARED OPEN BY THE PRIME MINISTER OF NINDIA, SHRI P.V.NARASIMHA RAO ON 29TH AUGUST, 1992.

IT IS LOCATED 5 KMS AWAY FROM JNAFAU

IT IS LOCATED IN SRINAGAR COLONY , HYDERABAD.

SURROUNDINGS: THE SITE IS SURROUNDED BY APPARTMENTS ON THE EAST SIDE , SREE

VENKATESHWARA SWAMY DEVASTHAANAM ON THE SOUTH SIDE. IT HAS TWO ENTRANCES, ONE IS ON THE NORT SIDE AND THE OTHER

ON THE EAST. THE VEHICULAR ENTRY IS ONLY FROM THE NORTH SIDE. THE GOVERNMENT HAS ALSO PROVIDED OPEN LAND FOR LOCATING

THE PARKING AREA BEHIND THE SHRI VENKATESWARA SWAMY TEMPLE.N

1.THE MAIN AUDITORIUM:

THE AUDITORIUM AND BALCONY, ARRANGED IN AN OCTAGONAL SHAPE, HAS A SEATING CAPACITY OF 1,372 PERSONS(INCLUDING THE BLCONIES).

AN INTERESTING DESIGN FEATURE OF THE AUDITORIUM ROOF IS THAT IT CONSISTS OF AN OCTAGONAL CONCRETE COMPRESSION RING HAVING A HEIGHT OF 3 M RISING TO A HEIGHT OF 16.5 M ABOVE THE AUDITORIUM FLOOR LEVEL AND CONNECTED WITH SIXTEEN CONCRETE BEAMS.

8 COLUMNS INSIDE AND 8 COLUMNS OUTSIDE AND 4 MAIN COLUMNS ON THE DINING HALL SUPPORTING THE AUDITORIUM.

AN OCTOGONAL DOME AND 16 UPPER CURVED SHELLS FORM THE ROOF OF THE AUDITORIUM. SIXTEEN LOWER CURVED SHELLS FORM THE BALCONY ROOF.

1.THE MAIN AUDITORIUM: APART FROM THE SEATING AT LOWER

LEVEL(1,117 PERSONS),THERE ARE 12 BALCONIES ON THE UPPER LEVEL(255 PERSONS).

IT HAS A DAIS FOR PERFORMANCE OF FUNCTIONS WITH 2 LARGE AIR CONDITIONED GREEN ROOMS ATTACHED.

THE AUDITORIUM IS FULLY AIR COOLED. THE AUDITORIUM IS EQUIPED WITH SOUND

EQUIPMENT MAINLY SUPPLIED BY THE BOSE CORPORATION OF U.S.A.

THE GANG WAYS ARE DECORATED WITH VINYL CARPETS.

THE 12 BALCONIES HAVE ONLY ONE ENTRANCE OF SIZE 1.5MX2M.

THE BALCONIES HAD ITS ENTRY FROM BOTH OUTSIDE THE BUILDING AND FROM INSIDE (FROM CORRIDOR).

EACH BALCONY CONSITS OF 4X5 SEATING.

IN THE MIDDLE THERE IS A ROOM USED FOR LIGHTING.

CONDITIONS FOR GOOD ACOUSTICS IN AUDITORIUM

AVOIDANCE OF STRONG ECHOES AND FOCUSING OF SOUND RAYS

•Strong echoes and focusing lead to a non uniform sound level within the room which is not desirable.•These features of the auditorium design : scatters, convex (non-focusing) ,surfaces on balcony fronts, absorption materials, carpet .INTIMACY, CLARITY

•Intimacy implies a short time between the first reflection of sound to the ear and the direct sound from the source.•Sound level of the source needs to be distinctly higher than the background sound. This promotes good speech intelligibility.

REDUCTION OF SOUNDS AND VIBRATIONSCONDITIONS

•This keeps the background noise level down.•Thick heavy walls and doors help to reduce the background noise.•Seals on doors are important .•It is also important to reduce noise from air handling systems, walking on floors and also talking outside the room.

FLOORS AND CATWALKSAUDITORIUM•The material used in the flooring is woolen carpet.•These woolen carpets are very good absorptive material.•The carpet is 80% wool and 20% nylon.

STAGE•The stage floor is made of hard wood.

CATWALK•There are 33 Back drops which work on counter balance system.•The steel beams in the catwalk are coated with vermicular coating, hence heat can be absorbed for 5-6 hours.•There is a catwalk above the seating area for changing and repairing lights. The intensity of lights can be controlled from the technical control room.

1.Generally used to absorb sound in order to avoid echo effect.

2.The width of wood wool fibres varies from 1.5 to 20mm, while their length is usually around 500mm.

•GLASS FACADE TO PROVIDE AMPLE SUNLIGHT AND VENTILATION.•LOBBIES ARE LARGE TO ACCOMMODATE THE HUGE CROWD.•THERE ARE NO CHAIRS OR BENCHES PROVIDED IN THE WAITING AREA.IT IS A HUGE SPACE WITH GOOD LIGHT AND VENTILATION.•DIFFERENT ENTRANCE FOR BACKSTAGE.STORAGE FACILITIES AND TOILETS ARE PROVIDED.•NO QUICK CHANGE.•THERE ARE SMOKE DETECTORS AND SPRINKLERS ON THE CEILING TO DETECT SMOKE.

OTHER FACILITIES:

THE GREENARY TO PROVIDE A GREEN AND ENVIRONMENTAL FRIENDLY ATMOSPHERE AROUND THE

NIGAMAGAMAM COMPLEX INCLUDING THE PARKING AREA, A BEAUTIFULLY DESIGNED VAST LANDSCAPE GARDEN HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED.

THE GARDEN CONSISTS OF SOFTFARE AND HARDWARE COMPONENTS. THE SOFTWARE COMPONENTS INCLUDE VAST STRETCHES OF CARPRT GRASS –

BERMUDA AND CORREAN GLASSLANDS –SEASONAL AND PERENNIAL PLANTS, SHRUBS, CREEPERS, GROUND COVER, A ROSE GARDEN, SMALL ROCKERY, POTTED PLANTS AND PLANTERS.

THE HARDWARE COMPONENTS CONSISTS OF SEVERAL FOUNTAINS INCLUDING A STEP FOUNTAIN.

A TOTAL OF 75 VARIETIES OF PLANTS AND TREES MAKEUP THE GREENERY OF THE NIGAMAGAMAM

WATERING OF THE GARDEN AREA IS DONE BY THE MMODERN METHODS OF EITHER DRIP OR SPRINKLE TYPES.

Our OBSERVATIONs

BECAUSE OF THREE REASONS THE AUDITORIUM IS CONSIDERED AS NOT A GOOD ONE

1.ALL EXTERIOR WALL ARE JAALI WALLS .ONLY FEW WALLS ARE COVERED WITH GLASS.(due to which exterior noise transmits into the inside of auditorium).

2.The roof pattern is not acousticaly treated with proper insulation.

3. There are many reflections and echoes being produce inside the auditoium when speeches are going on.
