oh, how i love the turn of the new year - new chapters, new opportunities, new adventures, new stories. i do get a laugh out of looking at that bucket list from last year and wth was i thinking?

it IS fun to remember all that has been good from 2012 - from work to personal - and recognizing the simple abundance of the year. i am thankful for the start of another year on this earth and i hope that 2013 is looking mighty fine for all of us sassy gals.

now that it's already early January, i'm still procrastinating on that new wth Bucket list ... i keep thinking about some of my favorite sayings that may help me finally mold my goals for my new year and this crazy bucket list, so here are some of my faves:

Eat This, Not That. (not one of my absolute faves)

It's Called Your Face Book Wall, Not Your Diary. Duh. (i couldn't resist including my Face Book peeve)

When in Doubt, Wing It. (definitely)

Work. Life. Balance. Sass. (realistic with a stretch - that striving for balance thing gets me every time)

January / contributors LETTER FROM THE editor

this is the time of year for renewal, self-examinations, fresh starts and the dreaded resolutions. the most important thing, though, in making resolutions is to be realistic with and true to yourself. Goals are great, as long as you take steps to accomplish them.

which brings me to some ways we can improve this year! i’m forever trying to be more ‘green’, so the article on “how to save the Planet while you’re at work” by sarah Boulac was especially intriguing to me. i am a recycling nut – i will dig things out of our trash at home and toss them in the make-shift recycling bins (read: cardboard boxes) i have in my garage. i’ve also been known to take piles of used paper from places i know Don’t recycle, and put them in my own bins, too!

Girlfriend time is important, also – “Brews with the Gals” by Jennifer warfel Juszkiewicz will point you toward a few little local gems to try out while you’re kicking back with your favorite friends.

Freshen up your wardrobe, too, by the way – Kathy Friend gives us a great outline to grow our wardrobe with five Must-haVes for our closet! you’ll be surprised at all the ways you can pair some basics and stretch the outfit options you already have.

and don’t forget to infuse a little bit of classy style! andrew skipper’s “Deliciously Downton” shows us how to mimic the style of the masterpiece hit show Downton abbey with a few simple ideas that will have you out shopping in no time flat!

My top resolution? to stop leaving things unfinishe…….

REGIfTING 101Did you get something that’s not quite “you” for Christmas? Regifting isn’t bad, as long as you follow these rules:

1. Be sure you don’t give the gift back to the same person who gave it to you, or to anyone in their family/close circle of friends.

2. Be sure the person you give it to would not be offended if, for any reason, they found out you’d regifted.

3. Be sure the person you give it to will have some interest in, or would make good use of, the gift. Don’t just wrap it up and give it to someone else who won’t know what to do with it.

4. Add a little flair: homemade wrapping paper or bow, a personal touch, a little note.

5. If someone asks if you got it elsewhere, be honest. There’s no shame in recycling, but there is in deceit!

Craft for a Cause!19

RESOLUTIONS YOU CAN kEEP!1. Be true to yourself, and never try to be

someone you’re not.

2. Keep in touch – with family, friends or whoever you like having in your life.

3. Make sure you find something positive to smile about each day. QUOTES

“No one’s ever achieved financial fitness with a January resolution that’s abandoned by February.” – Suze Orman

Growing Five Must-Haves that Can Make up to

30 Outfit Ideas!By Kathy Friend

PERFECT WHITE BLOUSEWHY? Just go to Pinterest and look at all the great outfits that are grounded with a white blouse. Pair it with a frilly skirt, maybe sequins for a casual night out or un-tucked with a tweed skirt and belted with a wide belt with boots. Pop the collar up and pair it with a pair of skinnies and some overly ‘blingy’ statement jewelry; this look is especially great with an animal print stiletto! Pull it on with your favorite jeans, belt it around a sleeveless dress and maybe bring that dress into winter? Tie it up with those favorite jeans or cuff up the jeans and pull on some Chuck Taylors – maybe even do a ½ tuck (tucked in the front but not the back) and pair it with skinny cords or khakis. When all else fails… go to the perfect white blouse.

DENIM SHIRTIt’s not just a big trend this season, but is also a workhorse of your wardrobe. It will never go out of style and will instantly dress down the most formal of looks. Bottom line: anywhere you would put the white blouse, try the denim shirt. Also consider wearing this shirt as a jacket or wear it over a tee, unbuttoned and belted with a thick corset-style belt. Juxtapose the masculine feel of the denim shirt with uber-feminine details like a long strand of pearls or even rhinestones. My favorite look is with a black crochet skirt and a leather biker jacket!

SHRUNKEN CARDIGAN IN YOUR SIGNATURE COLORYou know all those monochromatic outfits that define our closets? Add some panache to those looks with a simple signature cardigan. Mine is a fuchsia color. Pull it on with your Little Black Dress, and it will take that dress from something that is a bit dressy to something that is great for the office. Add extra ‘wow’ with a skinny belt or use it as a layering piece over your perfect white blouse, under a suit jacket or in place of a suit jacket. This is the sweater you can sass up with jewelry or your grandma’s brooch or wear simply with just a strand of pearls.

FUZZY VESTThe fuzzy (or fur) vest is on-trend and a must-have for this season. Not only will you look like you jumped off the pages of a fashion magazine, but you will also start seeing all the possibilities your closet has to offer when this is hanging in your wardrobe. Every time you pull on a simple look and you think to yourself, “this needs a little something…”? THAT is when you try the fur vest! Of course, it is going to look great with jeans, boots and your white shirt. Also try it with a neutral skirt (black, brown or grey) and the denim shirt and boots. Exchange the skirt for a pair of jeggings or leggings, and you’ve completely transformed the look. Go for a mixed texture look with tweed, plaid or corduroy. Some other ideas are over a simple dress, with yoga pants and a turtleneck or try it belted over trousers.

SASSY SKIRTI will admit I have several skirts I would pull into this category but, really, who couldn’t use one more? Lace, sequined, ruffled – anything that makes you feel amazing! Of course, these skirts can look perfect for a cocktail party with a simple blouse or cami, but what about pared back with a tuxedo jacket and motorcycle boots? Or with opaque tights, heels and that denim shirt? Now try the same look with your perfect white shirt and a corset belt. Who says you can’t wear sequins in the daytime? You can if you pair that skirt with an oversized chunky fisherman’s knit sweater and cowboy style boots. Some skirts can double as a tube top! Yes, even some with a zipper can work. Try pulling these sassy skirts up under your armpits and pulling on your favorite skinny jeans and heels. Wow! What a great cocktail look! Feel a little odd? Put on a cami underneath and bring in your signature color cardigan, belted.

The list of outfit ideas goes on and on! Try whatever makes you feel best. Confidence is the best look!

THE SASS FACTORY advice from a business coach

Dear Charrise...

I just made the difficult decision to resign a board position with an organization in whose mission I strongly believe because the organizational leadership is not carrying out the mission. My question is; how can one make this type of decision without feeling guilty or feeling like they are letting others down?

CHARRISE SAYSWhere is your guilt coming from? Did you do everything you could do to make it work? Board service is a wonderful way to give back to your community. Depending upon the board, serving can involve a significant time commitment. It’s vital that you feel like you’re making a difference in exchange for the time and energy you’re giving. You get to choose how you spend your time, and it’s useful to make that decision based upon the impact you’re creating through your service. Volunteer work is meant to be gratifying and, if it causes you stress, you’ve clearly got to take a serious look at it.

The way to leave with integrity, without ‘letting others down’, is to do so with honor. Did you have a clear and direct conversation with the leaders about your concerns? Whether you stay on the board or not, it’s important to communicate your views so that both you and the organizational leadership each understand your unique perspectives. If the mission is something you embrace, how can you be a cause for furthering that mission, on or off the board? Sharing not only your concerns, but also some of your ideas for better ways of operating might make a significant difference.

If your intention is to resign from the board in any case, having such a conversation will not cost you anything but a little more of your time.

I work in a small office with several women who have a great sense of style, but I am not very fashion-savvy. I am wondering how I can infuse a bit more style into my boring wardrobe but not break the bank at the same time.

CHARRISE SAYSIs that really true, that you’ve not very ‘fashion-savvy’? If it were true, would you be able to notice that the others have a great sense of style? My guess is that you’re intimidated by the other women in your office and you simply choose not to compete. Ask yourself what the real deal is with this situation. If you’re feeling ‘less than’, there’s some inner work to do to navigate those emotions.

You show the world who you are through your actions, and choosing how to dress is a reflection of your own personal sense of style. If you truly want to upgrade your outward image, I’d recommend you do it for the right reasons. Does the way you dress represent your authentic self?

Once you’ve reconciled these core questions, if you’re still interested in improving your wardrobe, there are a few ways to do it on a budget. First, do your research. Go to Pinterest, or other websites where you can browse various looks and make some notes about what you like and don’t like. (If you use Pinterest, you can even create your own style board!) This research effort will cost you nothing but time, and it will result in the clarity you need to make smart and savvy style purchases.

When you’re ready to make some purchases, consider shopping at the many local resale shops. There is a big market for gently used designer clothing, and you can buy really great clothing and accessories for a fraction of the cost of buying new. If you’re serious about this upgrade, you’ll need to be patient and spend some time acquiring the few key foundation pieces that will shift your relationship to style.

Lately I’ve been feeling very private and ‘not chatty’ at the office. Some people I work with are what I would call ‘over-sharers’, and I don’t feel like disclosing personal details of my life with people who I am not close to outside of work. Is there any way I can respectfully decline commentary on things like my love life or whether or not I find the mailman to be a ‘hottie’?

CHARRISE SAYSOf course there is a way to respectfully decline your commentary: you could just smile and move on. It sounds, though, like there might be some trust issues with your co-workers. Some people create a very distinct boundary between work and personal lives, and that is generally a by-product of lack of trust. If you felt as though the people you work with would treat your sharing with respect, you might feel more comfortable sharing.

It seems the office environment is often the perfect breeding ground for gossip-mongering. It’s difficult to trust that your feelings and secrets will be safe, when you hear others making fun of people, or hear stories told again and again at the expense of someone else. It doesn’t feel safe to share details about yourself under these conditions.

Have a co-worker who’s driving you batty? A boss who just won’t listen to reason? Or maybe you’re wondering if this is your time to breakout and show the business world what you’re really made of – but you don’t know exactly how to go about it. Sounds like you need some sound business advice! Send your questions to Charrise, our SASSY business coach, and have them answered here. It’s time to get a fresh perspective!

Dear Charrise...

Charrise McCrorey is a Certified Transformative Coach, business consultant, writer, and speaker. She works with individuals and business leaders worldwide, with offices in Elkhart and Chicago. She is a catalyst for assisting others in creating a magnificent life and rewarding work.

Humans crave connection with others who share common challenges and issues. When they ask you about your life, they are looking for ways to connect with you. My suggestion is to begin to build a trusting relationship with one or two people at work, and see how that feels. As you begin to lose your fear of being exposed in an unsafe environment, this concern you have will disappear.

In order be fully expressed in your work, you must address the interactions with the people with whom you do that work. Not having fulfilling relationships at work could represent a missed opportunity for genuine happiness at work. It’s likely worth your effort to consider ways to create a more satisfying existence there.

And... you may even make a good friend or two in the process.

Healthy Tips for New Year’s Weight Loss

SASSY healthy living

By Jessica Heckman, RD, CDNow that the hustle and bustle of the

holidays are behind us, it is time to focus on healthy ways to shed those

extra holiday pounds. For the career-focused woman, losing weight the healthy way can be such a challenge, especially when we are bombarded with quick-fixes ranging from fad diets to diet pills. But weight loss shouldn’t be as dramatic as it’s been made out to be. A slow weight loss of one pound per week is shown by research to be maintainable weight loss… and that is what we strive for, after all. Here are some strategies to kick-start your best year so you can be even more sassy in 2013:

Starter Fuel It’s not a myth that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Breakfast jump-starts your day by providing energy and revving up your metabolism. Starting your day with breakfast will prevent you from overeating later in the day; therefore, you will consume fewer total calories by the end of the day than you would have if you had skipped breakfast. Expect to have an improved memory, attention span and concentration when you fit in a well-balanced breakfast. What’s more important than brain function for the hard-working career woman?

Try these healthy on-the-go breakfast ideas: • Spread 1 T of peanut butter on a whole wheat tortilla. Add a whole banana

and roll it up.

• Toss in a handful of blueberries, a few walnuts and a dash of cinnamon to low-fat plain Greek yogurt for a punch of protein.

• Layer lean ham and low-fat Swiss cheese onto a toasted whole grain English muffin.

• Make a packet of instant oatmeal with low-fat milk. Mix in ¼ cup unsweetened applesauce and sprinkle with cinnamon.

• Pair a boiled egg with a slice of whole wheat toast topped with a thin spread of almond butter. Grab a piece of fruit for a complete breakfast.

Naturally Fast Food For the woman who does it all, making a quick pit-stop at those convenient fast food chains during your lunch break can be quite tempting. But fast food restaurants wreak havoc on your day’s worth of calories, fats, carbohydrates and sodium, not to mention the lack of vitamins, antioxidants, fiber and healthy fats the fare has to offer. Even foods we think are safe when dining out, such as salads, can be a danger zone. For example, a romaine lettuce salad topped with grilled chicken, black beans, rice, cheese, sour cream, guacamole and salsa racks in at about 900 calories. Ready for the good news? Healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables, dairy and whole grains are naturally fast food!

Tips for healthy eating on the run: • Pack a lunch for work: try loading 3 oz. of leftover chicken breast, ¼ cup of low-fat shredded

cheese, romaine lettuce, salsa and 1 Tbsp of guacamole on a whole wheat tortilla. (about 350 calories, preparation time: 5 minutes)

• Keep your office stocked with nutrient-filled snacks to stay fueled between meals: fruit, vegetables, whole grain crackers, trail mix, nuts, string cheese and low-fat yogurt are great staples.

• Plan, plan, plan! Having a weekly menu will prevent the need for last minute fast food runs.

Plan to Indulge Completely avoiding your favorite foods (such as sweets) can lead to major pitfalls in your weight loss journey. When a craving strikes and strikes again, continually ignoring the craving will eventually lead to vicious cycle of complete and utter indulgence, overeating and guilt. Now, this is no excuse to sabotage your weight loss efforts by giving into every craving that passes your way. However, having a light dessert (between 100 and 250 calories) every day that fits into your daily food plan is always a smart idea to keep those cravings at bay.

Here are some lighter chocolate indulgences: • Dove roasted dark chocolate almonds, 13

pieces. (about 210 calories)

• Split banana layered with ¼ cup light whipped topping, 1 tsp. of cocoa powder and 1/8 cup dark chocolate baking chips. Top it all off with a cherry! (about 240 calories)

• Light chocolate ice cream – but watch the serving size! Aim for only ½ cup (about the size of two eggs). Top with raspberries to stay satisfied and to add a kick of fiber! (about 130 calories)

• Kashi oatmeal dark chocolate cookie. (130 calories)

• Graham crackers (4) with 1 Tbsp. of Nutella spread. (about 220 calories)

Work-It-InNot having enough time in our day for exercise is probably the biggest barrier that keeps us from hitting the gym. But getting our daily physical activity is not impossible with a bit of planning and creativity because, remember: physical activity is an essential part of your weight loss plan!

Check out these physical activity tips: • Get up 30 minutes earlier for an early morning

energy boost, before the day becomes too busy.

• Go for a walk around the office with a co-worker during lunch.

• Keep exercise fun! Begin an exercise class with a friend or keep a Zumba DVD handy for those days when getting to the gym is just impossible .

• Only have 10 minutes? Invest in a jump rope and aim for three ten minute spurts of jumping throughout the day.

Remember, healthy weight loss is based on the idea that small changes in your everyday lifestyle amounts to great success in your health. Most of all, losing weight is not just about the number on the scale – it’s about feeling your best, performing your best and simply being your best!

Gold Leaf Glamour – While you may not want the kids and dogs jumping on a delicate antique French sofa, a small gold leafed chair in the corner or next to the fireplace adds a touch of glamour to your interiors. Place a stack of three books on it to keep the kids off, and you'll have a rich look without sacrificing comfort.

With season three of Downton Abbey premiering this month, lifestyle expert Andrew Skipper shares how to make your home a bit more grand.

By Andrew Skipper

With season three of Downton Abbey debuting in January of 2013 on PBS, all things old are new again. American audiences have been captivated by the romance and sumptuous settings of the great melodrama set in early 20th century England. With 17.1 million tuning in across the seven episodes of season two, Downton Abbey has become the most-watched MASTERPIECE series on record. What sets Downton Abbey apart is the

buzz that it's creating among viewers, especially on social media websites like Twitter and Facebook. Younger audiences are falling in love with the lifestyle, characters and setting of the series. In today's fast-paced world, the elegance and grace of a bygone era can still be achieved by incorporating classically

inspired pieces into current homes. Whether period antiques or updated versions are used, be inspired to infuse your home with a little bit of grandeur in 2013!

Deliciously Downton

Create Drama – Score vintage side tables at antique stores and estate sales, but don't be afraid if the finish isn't perfect. A few coats of high-gloss spray paint can transform a tired piece into a sexy side table with a top so shiny it looks like glass. Who wouldn't want to take tea on this high-gloss black vintage table?

Go Big or Go Home – No matter what the size of your room, make a statement with large scale pieces such as this silver horse sculpture. Contrary to popular belief, using a few large objects in a small space actually makes it feel bigger! And if you have a large room to begin with, you need over-sized pieces to pump up the volume.

Lovely Lighting – Add a classic sconce to a dark corner and see how the entire room changes. Flank a mantel or buffet with a pair of sconces on the wall and watch perfect symmetry take your room to a new level. Sconce lighting also is much more flattering than overhead lighting, making everyone look better. Don't forget to put them on dimmers!

Serve with Style – Presentation is everything. Get out the silver serving pieces or look for antiques such as this beautiful gravy boat. With its sultry shape and beautiful details, it is sure to elevate the look of any table and set the stage for an elegant dinner.

Shine, Dahhhling – Don't be afraid of a little shimmer. This vintage metal lamp with rattan shade got a complete upgrade by painting the base high-gloss black and spraying the shade gold. Combining interesting textures with shiny finishes is a great way to get a top notch look.

Library Lessons – You don't have to have an entire room devoted to a library. Add a book shelf to your den or at the end of a hallway and fill it with classic books. Don't have room for more furniture? A stack of your favorite reads on an end table or sandwiched between a pair of bookends will do the trick. The patina of antique books (especially leather bound) will create a sense of history in even new homes. Books also tell a story about their owners: what their interests are and how they like to spend their down time.

When Online and Real Life CollideAdvice on Navigating 1-D Friendships in a 3-D world.

It has become an all too familiar scene; I’m in a public place. I see someone who looks familiar. I quickly start wracking my brain, trying to place their face and hopefully their name as well. This process used to be simpler before I

entered the online world of social networking where I forge relationships with people I have never actually met.

This scenario played out recently as I was standing in line. I saw someone who looked familiar, but could not place her. Thankfully, her synapses fired more effectively. She came up to me and said, “You’re Meagan Church. We follow each other on Instagram.” And there it was. That’s why she looked so familiar.

So there we stood, ‘introducing’ ourselves to one another for the first time in person and yet, we already knew much about one another. Through viewing each other’s pictures via a social app, we had caught glimpses into one another’s lives. We had seen the milestones of each other’s children, the randomness of daily life, the sunrises that took our breath away and the vacations that rejuvenated us. And yet, this was the first time we had seen each other in a three-dimensional manner.

Thanks to Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Good Reads and my blog sites, I ‘know’ many people that I have never actually met. In fact, as a freelance writer, I have never even met many of the people I work with. While I do love the chance to work from the comfort of my home in my pajamas (no, you won’t see those pics on Instagram), it does mean I don’t have the opportunity to blow off steam at the water cooler and that cyber space is the only place I’ve met a certain percentage of the people with whom I consistently interact.

But, at the same time, I have forged relationships and joined in chats with people

I never would’ve had the opportunity to connect with otherwise. For instance, one of my favorite Twitter experiences is the time the author who wrote one of my favorite books responded to one of my tweets. She and I went on to exchange a few messages. Are we now BFFs? No. But it was still a thrill to know that she had read my words and had taken the time to respond…unlike all those New Kids on the Block fan letters that went unanswered.

In this age of online socializing, we can find ourselves conversing with a completely different group of people in the cyber world compared to the real world. While there can be great benefits in finding community online, at some point we must go offline. And so, here are some tips for my fellow social media junkies:

Careful what you say.I once had a woman come up to me and say, “I read your blog!” This is a woman I had never met before and suddenly I wondered, “What did I write? What did I say? What does she know about me?” Of course, I know that when I put myself out there, it’s fair game for anyone to read or see. So, if you want to remain a closeted Star Trek fan or you don’t want your boss to know you’re a woo-girl, it’s best to keep that offline.

Make it real.As an introvert, I’m not always the best at striking up new friendships with people in real life. Even so, if there is one thing I’ve learned about friendship, it’s that having the opportunity to hang out in person deepens a relationship far more than clicking ‘like’ or re-tweeting ever could. So, whenever possible, convert those online friendships to real life ones. Go grab a cup of coffee or try

the burger dive she Instagrammed a few weeks ago. See what it’s like to converse with instead of type to one another.

Reality may differ. As with a person’s profile pic, what is shared online doesn’t always show the entire picture. Meeting an online friend in real life can sometimes feel like online dating. You may know what her favorite TV shows are, where she buys her jeans and what her favorite breakfast food is, but you have no idea what her voice sounds like or even how tall she is. When we meet someone online, it is difficult to get a well-rounded perspective of someone, partly because people only share tidbits of their lives with the online world and because we have a tendency to fill in the gaps on our own. So, realize that the person you imagine them being may not be a 100 percent accurate portrayal of who they really are.

Be present.I love Instagram. I love the feeling of capturing a moment that otherwise would’ve faded from my memory in time. I love experimenting with camera angles and filters to strengthen the mood and tone of what I photographed. But, I must remember that real life is happening all around me as I fiddle with filters. Sometimes the iPhone needs to be kept in your pocket as you interact with the people in front of you. The online world can wait.

In the end, whether the majority of your friendships exist online or offline, remember what Nicole Richie said, “True friends are like diamonds – bright, beautiful, valuable and always in style.”

Brews with the Gals

Sharing A Local Brewery ExperienceBy Jennifer Warfel Juszkiewicz

You’ve been storing up a month’s worth of news and advice, and the long phone conversations and Facebook updates just aren’t cutting it. You need to go out with your friends, but you want to do something new. The chain restaurant down the street isn’t going to cut it, either. You need to go someplace local, someplace with a good atmosphere and someplace new.

How about a brewery or distillery? After all, you’re bound to get a good drink, and with all the new options in Michiana, you’ll get a great atmosphere as well.

Going out to a brewery may seem strange at first, but they aren’t just a room filled with copper kettles and bearded men with in suspenders. Craft brewers are small, artisan facilities, and they often have a taproom next door so you can try the brews on site.

This has become more common as the market for craft brews has boomed in the United States. According to the Brewers Association, craft brewers increased their volume production 13 percent in 2011. Here are just a few options in our region alone – two new breweries and one distillery that started production in 2011. Bare Hands Brewery opened in Granger, Four Horsemen Brewery opened in South Bend and Journeyman Distillery opened in Three Oaks, Michigan. Each one offers a unique experience for your non-traditional ladies’ getaway.

Cozy, Country and Craft BrewsGlance through the online reviews of Bare Hands Brewery of Granger, and you’ll see compliments such as, “It’s a cool little place buried way back from the road.” Admittedly, in its location a ways off US 23 down a side road, Bare Hands is a bit out of the way. But once you find them, you’re in for a treat. They focus on handcrafting small batches of high quality brews of their own invention. They’ve made such tempting and intriguing concoctions as Oatmeal Stout, Russian Poblano, Mail Order Bride and Chocolate Milk Stout.

Even the descriptions of their beers sound like a dessert. For example, their description of their Imperial Brown Ale is that it’s “cask primed with maple syrup and vanilla beans.” Reviewers have mentioned the “dark, roasty flavor” of their stout, and the “light and citrus” tones of their ThaI.P.A. The beers available change each week, depending on the casks currently being tapped, so be sure to check their blog at barehandsbrew.com to see the day’s specials.

Bare Hands’ atmosphere is mellow with comfortable seating and snacks. They are

open from Wednesday to Sunday, and you can even pop in and fill up a growler to take home should you want to stay in with your friends on a cold evening. But if you come to the taproom, you can split a $7 pitcher with your friends. Like other craft breweries, Bare Hands aims to bring the best of beer to the brewers’ hometown. “Our story is simple,” explain owners Chris and Kim Gerard on their blog, “We are passionate about great beer and we want to share it with others.”

Cheers and BeersDon’t reject a sports bar out of hand. According to ESPN, the NFL reported a sales increase of 125 percent over the previous year in women’s apparel, so we shouldn’t assume a night watching sports is just for the guys. Still, if going to a traditional sports bar isn’t for you, pull up a chair at the non-traditional Four Horsemen in South Bend instead.

Sam and Ben and Robert Roule, along with Master Brewer Stephen Foster, opened the Four Horsemen last year. The Roules are descendents of Arthur Roule, who started a brewing distributor in LaPorte County generations ago, then moved it to St. Joseph County. They continued the family business when they created this facility, bringing in the extensively-trained Foster, who has traveled the world to learn his craft.

Their facility’s taproom features a custom-made bar and laid-back atmosphere. They are only open Thursday to Sunday, but “we do draw in a lot of people, regulars, on those days” says Ben Roule. They come for the sports on the TV, the friends, and the beer. On occasional Fridays, they also come for the live music.

Finding Four Horsemen is almost as difficult as Bare Hands. It’s in a light industrial area, and you walk in through an office to reach the taproom. The feel is somewhat ‘corporate speakeasy’. Instead of giving a password to a grouchy, cigar-smoking bouncer and passing through a secret door at the back of a coat closet, you find the Four Horsemen taproom by walking through the office, dodging cubicles as you follow signs to your destination. Once in, one Yelp reviewer described it beautifully: “While it's definitely continuing the ‘industrial’ theme set by the exterior of the building, Four Horsemen's taproom is still a pretty pleasant place; concrete floor and corrugated ceiling are emphasized by a wood-and-corrugated aluminum bar, hanging lamp fixtures, and lots of bright, undulled metal.”

The space is small, seating only 40, and they don’t serve food. So, bring in your favorite snacks and settle down. Having a party and want to bring a dozen friends? If you give them a call, the Roules will set you up in the brewing room itself, surrounded by the shining equipment. See pictures at their site: fourhorsemenbrewco.com.

And then there’s the beer: Four Horsemen features a variety -- from the Irish Stout and Irish Red, to India and English Pale Ales. They even featured a pumpkin ale this past fall and have plans for future seasonal specials as well.

Cressy EverettTake a Journey NorthHead north to Three Oaks for a beautiful day. Not only is Three Oaks a destination town for shopping, theatre and the arts, but it’s also home to Journeyman Distillery, which Bill Welter opened in 2011.

Situated in the old Featherbone Company, which used to make ladies’ corsets and buggy whips, Journeyman is full of character and charm. The floors are the original maple, the concrete bar was cast in Grand Rapids and the barn wood on the walls was salvaged from central Indiana.

The décor reflects the mission of Journeyman: to make a beautiful product reflective of the spirit and products of the Midwest. The whiskey and spirits are all organic, and the grains used to make them are from family farms in Michigan, Illinois and Wisconsin. When you drink a Journeyman product, “you’re supporting a global organic economy and you’re helping to reduce the toxic load of chemicals in the air, water, soil and bodies.”

Even their products are named after the region’s geographic and historical landmarks: Red Arrow Vodka, Buggy Whip Wheat Whiskey, Michigan Spirit Whiskey, and Billberry Black Hearts Gin, among others. You can even get a behind-the-scenes look at the distilling process by calling ahead to schedule a free tour, complete with a tasting at the end.

Most weekends, you can top off a visit with a snack or meal in the taproom, particularly during the busy summer season. Sample one of their cocktails, too. “We have great options – we’re even making our own simple syrups. Our pear cocktail is amazing,” says Tiffany Daugherty, Journeyman’s brand ambassador. And keep tabs on their website, journeymandistillery.com, for upcoming events such as mixology classes, where you can learn to make specialty drinks from their bar manager.

One event that would be perfect for you and your friends is their annual “Corsets, Whips and Whiskey” in June. Last year, over 600 people attended this tent party on the Journeyman grounds, enjoying the live entertainment, hog roast and drinks prepared by a team of mixologists. The cost of the ticket is equivalent to a dinner at a mid-range restaurant, and it includes the full meal and a cocktail. This year, the event is expanding, so be sure to get your ticket.

So, call up your friends and take a poll. Beer or whiskey? Sports night or a beach getaway? Whatever the choice, you won’t have to go far to find the perfect place to catch up and relax.

At home, you’re an energy-saving, impact-reducing sustainable powerhouse, saving the planet one recycled glass jar at a time! You have replaced all your light bulbs at home with CFLs, set your programmable thermostat down two degrees for the winter and are attached to your reusable water bottle. Going green at the office can further reduce your overall environmental footprint and can often save your company some green in the process.

Paper, Paper and More PaperRecycle. According to the EPA, Americans use about 71 million tons of paper and paperboard in a year. Instead of sending old memos to the landfill, recycle them so they can have a new life as tomorrow’s coffee filters or egg cartons. If your office doesn’t have an established recycling program, talk with management about establishing one. It could be as simple as a bin that volunteers take to a nearby drop off.

Go Paperless. “We have the technology now that we don’t need to be printing out memos,” says Krista Bailey, Assistant Director of the Center for a Sustainable Future at IUSB. By using available technology, offices can become as close to paperless as possible. Utilize electronic billing and forms. Scan old or incoming documents and eliminate storage and organizational hassles. Check out cloud technology such as Google Drive which allows you to share documents with colleagues and clients who can review them and make changes which can be viewed instantly. Set your printer to default to print on both sides of the paper and eliminate waste.

Paper Products. For the paper you do use, look for “forest certified” resources which, Bailey explains, means the wood is harvested in a sustainable way. Also look for as heavy a post-consumer recycled content as you can afford, and look for paper that is whitened with non-chlorine bleach, she suggests.

Purchasing Power. When it’s time to buy more paper or other supplies, make sure “your order is large enough that it makes sense for it to be shipped,” says Myles Robertson, Intern and Program Coordinator at the Office of Sustainability at Notre Dame. Check with other departments or neighboring offices about combining your order to reduce the fuel used for shipping.

ElectricityLights Out. Just as you shut off lights at home when you leave a room, shut off the light in your office if you will be out for several minutes. Robertson’s program uses signs at the switch to catch people’s attention and remind them to flip the switch on their way out. Also remember to shut off the bathroom lights when they’re unoccupied.

Use Windows. If you have a window in your office, especially a sunny south facing window, use the natural light as your primary lighting, suggests Bailey. Use work station lighting instead of “vast overhead lighting” that may light spaces that you don’t need, she says.

Energ y Audit. Robertson uses an energy audit to get a tangible number of the kilowatts used. “That’s a really good way to help see where some significant energy reductions can happen,” he says. Count the number of refrigerators, coffee pots, computers, etc.; multiply by the number of watts they use and the number of hours they are on each day.

Unplug. Shut off electronics such as computers and printers at the end of the day and over the weekend. Robertson also suggests checking out smart strips where, for example, you plug the tower into a certain outlet on the strip and all the peripheries into secondary ones. When the “tower is turned off, the switch kills the power to the peripheries,” he explains.

Happy WorkersPeople Power. “A sustainable piece people forget about is actually how people feel while they’re working, so they can be productive and happy and healthy,” says Bailey. Consider the whole working environment including lighting (full spectrum light bulbs during the winter), what people are sitting on (exercise balls engage the body in a more comfortable way) and cleaning supplies (harsh chemicals and air fresheners can make people feel sick) to name a few.

The Daily CommuteGetting to work. While getting to and from work is done on personal time, companies can create incentives for commuting sustainably. Robertson’s program encourages using public transportation or carpooling. Another idea is to offer preferred parking for those with low emissions vehicles. Bailey suggests making it fun by creating office challenges such as who can bike to work the most days of the week. The aim is to have fun and generate some excitement around being green.

Taking steps toward sustainability is a “team-based activity” says Bailey, who reminds us that these changes are not going to happen overnight. Robinson says, “There are a lot of low hanging fruit that people can take care of at their offices to reduce their waste and start saving a little bit of money. And, over time, because you’re saving money, you can implement more and more programs that help save more energy and reduce more waste that, in turn, saves you more money.”

The Benefits of Business MakeoversBy Stephanie Graham

W e all know first impressions are important, but when those impressions directly affect the survival of a company, the stakes raise exponentially. Big-name companies in particular spend hour upon hour researching

various demographics of their potential customers’ personalities. How do they think? What makes some people come into a store and others walk right on by?

Even simple common sense tells us that certain stores are going to attract certain people’s attention. Generally speaking, for example, a store with plenty of pink could repel men, and stores with racks full of hunting and fishing gear might send most women for the nearest exit. No matter the business, “Ambiance certainly matters,” says Nancy Kline, owner of Atmospheres Interiors in St. Joseph, Michigan. It matters doubly so, perhaps, for stores that are selling some sort of fashion item. “The cutting edge fashion shops are the ones swamped with people,” she says about the stores in her area.

If at First You Don’t Succeed…When a business is not booming, and the owner or management thinks it may be time for a makeover, there are plenty of things to consider first. Kline suggests calling a meeting to assess the situation and decide if a makeover would be the best option. After conversations ruling out factors like location as the problem, budget and return on investment are the next order of discussion; is it reasonable to think the money spent on a makeover will be returned through a positive response from customers?

Then it’s a matter of how much needs to be done, since it doesn’t always have to cost a fortune to have an impact. Kline says that sometimes, “just a coat of paint and some plants can go a long way to bring in atmosphere.” Being strategic with lighting can also help optimize a low-budget makeover. “If you have jewelry, glasses, dishes or other glass products, you can bring them up near the window and use light to your best advantage.”

If the decision is made to go further, though, Kline advises, “With any design,

your first consideration is going to be function.” Secondly, it is going to be about appearance and fashion. “The visual effect will definitely impact the customer’s feelings to want to make purchases,” she says.

Cosmetic AestheticsWhile the ultimate goal is that people like the products and buy them, the first step in that process is getting people to walk through the doors. Rebecca Maalouf, Camellia Cosmetics owner and lead artist, learned this the hard way. When Camellia opened in Eddy St. Commons two years ago, they were excited to invite new clientele through their doors. But what they found was that the store didn’t fit as well as they had hoped. It was a mini version of the same store in Granger, but apparently got caught in a gap between the college students and professional women they were looking to serve. Maalouf even remembers hearing some college students walking by the store, saying, “I don’t want to go in there. It looks way too expensive.”

“Just being fashion forward is one thing,” Kline says, “but fashion forward for one age group will be completely different than it would be for another, or for guys versus girls. You definitely want to think about that age group or that gender that you’re designing for because you’re going to want them to enjoy being there.” Striking that balance is an ongoing learning process.

Maalouf says there was a sort of ‘don’t touch, hands off ’ look to the store, so she decided to call the design team at home furnishing store Junk Evolution to see what they could do. Interior designer Char Swoveland of Junk Evolution agrees that Camellia did have a fancy look. “The whole shop was very glamorous; pink walls with white furnishings and a black counter.” Maalouf wanted to mix up the products and decided they “absolutely needed to change the image of the store, from bright and shiny to a more grunge, warm, inner city area with a friendly feeling.”

The agreement they ended up with can be inspiration for anyone looking for

Page 25: Sassy Magazine 2013

Blushing Bride

creative business ventures. As they were in the early phases of conversation about design, budget and supplies, they ended up striking an unusual business deal. Swoveland suggested a business services exchange: Junk Evolution could revamp Camellia’s store design, and then Camellia’s hair, makeup and wardrobe experts could give Swoveland and fellow interior designer Linda Sherck makeovers of their own. Everyone agreed it was a great idea. Sherck says, “Especially as a small business, we really need all the help we can get to survive today.”

The cosmetics store got to take the first turn. Swoveland and Sherck put their imaginations and interior design experience to work. Some racks were replaced with wire baskets, all the furniture was distressed, and the pink walls were painted off-white to give precedence to the style accents and the products – all in an effort to take it from a suburban to an urban feel. The design team also helped with ideas on how to display jewelry and other products.

Swoveland and Sherck were thrilled when they then received their part of the bargain, the head-to-toe makeovers complete with photo shoot. Swoveland says, “It was wonderful; they totally pampered us.” This not only ended up being fun and cost-effective, but now both businesses could promote each other from personal experience.

Risk vs RewardAs with many things in life, only time will tell if a business makeover was the missing ingredient. Maalouf says, “It's been so fun to work with one another, and a great benefit for both stores at a very small cost.” Even without a creative business deal or extensive changes, makeovers can be just the thing to get a place back on its feet and to give it the boost it needs to reach more people.

In a short while, that uniquely American tradition called Super Bowl Sunday will be upon us. Whether you’re a football fan or not, you will most likely be caught up in water cooler conversations about the advertising. And if you are a business woman, you may be particularly interested in what the experts pick as the winners of the commercial competition – and why!

Doesn’t it seem incongruous that a society that loves to hate advertising has turned the Super Bowl into a virtual film festival for commercials? Actually, this may be a case of the exception proving the rule. Advertising is most effective when it is rendered as a good story told well. The Super Bowl has evolved into a showcase for great storytelling. In doing so, people actually look forward to the event.

By contrast, unfortunately, most of the advertising one sees on a day-to-day basis is not good storytelling. Regardless of the medium, it seems most marketers are more concerned with buying time or space than investing in the nominal extra effort to produce something people will actually notice and find interesting. It’s almost as though marketers have come to view creativity as a commodity. One idea is as good as the next.

Increasingly, we seem to be encountering more and more situations where the medium is the medium and the message is largely irrelevant. To be sure, there have always been marketers who were more comfortable running ‘me-too’ advertising than encouraging creativity that accentuates the differentiation of their product or service and is truly memorable. The current situation, however, seems more systemic and substantive, almost insidious. There are an increasing number of organizations who apparently believe it doesn’t matter what their campaigns say, as long as they say it more often or save money by not spending it on producing powerful new ideas and strategically-driven executions.

In Marketing 101, we all learned the dangers of commoditization. If a product or service cannot be effectively differentiated, the only remaining purchase criteria is price. This strategy may be fine for certain low-end discounters, but it is not the position most businesses typically want to be in. Yet it is precisely where the lack of strategically-driven creativity is taking too many marketers.

As a result, most advertising today is filled with meaningless, self-serving platitudes and fails to address the needs of the customer. What the customer needs is to know you understand her and respect her enough to deliver a message that is relevant and interesting. Effective advertising does not speak down to or shout at the customer. It engages her. It presents the message in a way that clearly differentiates the product or service from one’s competitors. And, most of all, it uses good storytelling techniques to touch a heartstring or to present a compelling case for the brand.

Years ago, there was a brilliant ad guy named Howard Gossage. One of my favorite quotes from him is this: “Nobody reads advertising. People read what interests them; and sometimes it’s an ad.” Whether one is talking traditional media advertising such as appears in any magazine or on a billboard, TV, radio or in online media, Gossage’s premise still holds true. A marketing message is only as memorable and actionable as the way it is presented. Creativity is the key to effectiveness.

Which brings us back to the Super Bowl. While some of the advertising involves sophomoric attempts at humor or gratuitous sexual innuendo, the true winners are the brands who are smart enough to combine great creative content with the context of America’s most popular televised event.

Now – please pass the Pepsi, Doritos and Tostito’s Salsa. Game on!

Attached is a ad copy of what he would like the ad to reflect, "SorgthirdpageJANSASSY.pdf " Stars throughout ad and the red heart in the "O" of the world can be different than the picture but he does want that incorporated. The "O" in "Out" is to be the same as in the logo (ring shape).Sorg logo to be incorporatedIncorporate the Autumn ring into the ad with the blue running through it and maybe a "halo" effect around ring.Add the website: www.SorgJewelers.comUnder or next to each "location" add phone #'s CR 17 Elkhart - 574-294-5406Downtown Goshen- 574-533-1312

Extraordinary moments happen when extraordinary people.... . . come together as one.

Our community is generous in its response to help others. That’s why we’re asking for your donation.

The Ronald McDonald Family Room at Memorial Children’s Hospital provides food and comfort to families of critically ill or injured children 365 days a year/24 hours a day. Last year, we served almost 2,000 families – and our numbers continue to grow.

The need is always there, and as we eagerly anticipate the new year, we know that we face even more challenges. That’s why your support is so important – and appreciated.

Our staff, volunteers and our families thank you!

Here’s what one of our guests had to say about being extraordinary.

When my son was brought to the hospital after an automobile accident, I didn’t want to leave his side. But after awhile, I needed a break – food and a place to get away for a bit. That’s when a nurse directed me to the Ronald McDonald Family Room. It was a place to ‘just be’, a place of peace, and a place where others understood my tears and sometimes shared in them.

If I had to use one word to describe the experience, it would be ‘EXTRA-ordinary.’ The staff and volunteers asked us every day if we needed anything. When I forgot to eat, there was always a home-cooked meal brought in by extraordinary people doing extraordinary things for me and other guests.

Thank you for keeping the Ronald McDonald Family Room going!

the mission:At the Center for Hospice Care, our mission is to improve the quality of living for our patients and their families.

One big wish for our agency is that our community would truly understand hospice care and all the benefits it provides to patients facing a life-limiting illness (and to their loved ones as well). We would be happy to educate the community on how and when to access hospice care and how the financial aspect of hospice care works.

In the upcoming year, we would like to increase the number of volunteers in all eight counties, register at least 1,500 cyclists for Bike Michiana for Hospice, register at least 500 walkers for Walk for Hospice and increase the number of speaking engagements and community education presentations for our liaisons.

We are funded through Grants, Donations, Underwriters and Medicare.

biggest fundraiser of the year:The Helping Hands Award Dinner is our biggest fundraiser. It is held the first Wednesday in May to honor an individual, couple or family who have exhibited exceptional generosity, outstanding community achievements, direct financial support or by motivating others to give. The honoree does not have to be associated with the Center for Hospice Care.

Important Skin Facts You Must Know

We often neglect the things which are most important to us. Your skin is no different. It is the largest organ of the body and the most outwardly visible part of us. That is why it is important to take simple steps to look our best and invest in ourselves. Not many people know why sunscreen, soaps and water can change our skin.

It is important to understand that the sun is actively changing our skin all year long. We must protect it to reduce aging spots, wrinkles, and rough texture and to prevent skin cancer. Using lotions, creams and make-up with proper Ultraviolet (UV) protection can help fight off sun damage. “The best sunscreen ingredients include those which block UVA and UVB rays,” recommends board-certified dermatologist Dr. Roger Moore. As a skin cancer specialist, he explains that there are four ingredients which block UV rays the best: Parsol 1789, Meroxyl, Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide. He recommends Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide as they are physical blockers which means they bounce the rays off the skin rather than absorbing them.

Water can play a role in our appearance, too. Though many enjoy a hot, steamy shower, that relaxed feeling comes at a cost to the skin. Heat can damage the outer layer of the skin, preventing it from holding moisture like it normally should. This leads to a loss of our protective barrier and gives us more dry, rough and scaling skin. Using lukewarm water helps to maintain skin integrity. In addition, soaps meant to clean will strip away small amounts of the skin barrier, so limiting soap to the areas such as underarms, groin, hands and feet is often best. The finishing touch is to apply a heavy cream. Creams trap moisture better than lotions. “When we pat dry and apply a heavy cream, we help our skin health and hydration,” says Dr. Moore.

As we learn to take care of our skin, it is important to remember that skin cancer is the leading cancer in America today. Some estimate that one in three people will get skin cancer. Learn the warning signs of skin cancer, as your awareness could be lifesaving. If you notice a new or changing growth or spot on your skin, get it checked out by a board certified dermatologist. No other doctor has as much training in the skin.

This educational piece was sponsored by Dr. Roger Moore, a Board-Certified Dermatologist and the founder of DermacenterMD.

He is one of the area’s leaders in skin care and skin cancer as well as a strong advocate for patient education. Dr. Moore performs the highly-acclaimed method of skin cancer removal “Mohs Micrographic Surgery”. You may learn more about Dr. Moore and skin health by visiting www.DermacenterMD.com or calling his office at 574.522.0265.

His office does not require a doctor referral and he is accepting new patients.

Dr. Christopher Peers is one of the first surgeons in the country to be trained with and to use a revolutionary third generation new technology called SmartWaterLipo®. In just one treatment, Dr. Peers can instantly remove unwanted fat from targeted areas on the body. Dr. Peers continues to add the “best-in-class” procedures to his practice, such as the use of Sculptra®, the 20 minute facelift, which helps restore lost collagen naturally over a period of 3-5 treatments.

• SASSY PeRk: Complimentary Botox® with any Liposuction procedure. Be sure to mention the Sassy Little Black Book of Beauty when scheduling your appointment!

Page 38: Sassy Magazine 2013

Everyone has one: an area of the body that no diet or exercise routine has been able to tame, and that taunts you

day after day. For some women, it’s a post-baby or menopause abdomen; others may have great legs—except for the “saddlebags” that a million leg lifts haven’t slimmed. For men, it’s most often their love handles. Not to worry, says Dr. Christopher Peers, one of the first surgeons in the country to be

trained and use a revolutionary 3rd generation new technology called SmartWaterLipo®. In just one treatment, Dr. Peers can instantly

remove unwanted fat from targeted areas on the body.

Liposuction has been around since the 1970s. Traditional liposuction was a brutal process done under general anesthetic with varying degrees of success. Lumps and uneven contours were common.A few years ago, two new technologies were introduced in this

country: laser and ultrasound assisted liposuction. Performed with just local

anesthetic, a skilled doctor could produce results far superior with less pain, less downtime, less bruising and better results than the old method. Both methods had

their advantages and disadvantages.

Announcing: 3rd Generation Liposuction Contouring With Very Little Pain: SmartWaterLipo™

Dr. Peers combines the revolutionary 3rd generation water liposuction with Smart Lipo in a procedure he calls SmartWaterLipo™.

“The only thing the patients feel is a small pin prick (similar to being numbed by a dentist) when the local anesthetic is applied. The cannula we use has an opening for the water jet spray and a second one for suctioning. We gently break the fat apart and suction it out simultaneously. It is the gentlest liposuction available.

And unlike other procedures, there are no unattractive pockets of skin or bumps left afterwards. We finish with Smart Lipo to tighten and tone the skin.

Water assisted liposuction produces no heat and because of the suctioning process, most of the fluid that’s left in the body flushes within days, not months. “That’s a huge benefit for my patients,” says Dr. Peers. “I am better able to finesse the contouring and the results become visible sooner. My patients love it.”

general anesthesia or hospital/surgery center expenses.

A Noticeable ResultRuth Bigler was a 57 year old mother of 2 preparing for her daughter’s upcoming wedding when she decided to have liposuction.

“I had been going to the gym for 2 years but still carried the belly fat. When I heard about Smart Lipo I did 10 months of research to find out if it was worth it and what doctor was the best one to perform the surgery should I choose to go ahead with the procedure. In the end, I chose Dr. Peers from Goshen, Indiana because of his level of experience combined with the fact that I could personally speak with 3 of his patients who had nothing but glowing comments," explains Bigler. “It was a nice bonus that his prices are very competitive.”

“I only wished I had done it sooner. But now that I’ve had it done once and see how easy it is, I am definitely planning to have Dr. Peers finish my transformation with his new SmartWaterLipo™”.

In the NewsDr. Peers, a native of Toronto who has received training from some of the best schools in the world—from Indiana to Paris, France—received his surgical board certification in 1987 and has practiced in Goshen, IN, for the majority of his career.

Not practicing in an area of the country known for their hotbed of innovation and technology, this gentle doctor’s success caught the eye of the network news stations anyway and he was contacted about performing the procedure in front of live cameras. It was after his TV debut that word about him spread and overnight he became a phenomenon and is now one of the country’s most experienced Lipo surgeons.

So What Does SmartWaterLipo™ Cost?Cost varies depending on how much fat you have to be removed. The more fat, the longer the surgery, the more the cost. But the good news is, at $3,200 for one area, it is far less than the traditional method that required general anesthesia in a hospital surgery room and weeks off of work for recovery!

For a free Smart Water Lipo™ or liquid facelift consultation, call Dr. Peer’s office at 574-533-9000. 2012 S. Main Street, Goshen, IN 46526

Other new trends in cosmetic proceduresSculptra® - the 20 minute faceliftAs the population ages and continues to demand non-invasive procedures to help keep them looking as fresh as possible, Dr. Peers continues to add the “best-in-class” procedures to his practice. One of those procedures is the use of Sculptra®. Not a filler like Juvederm® and Radiesse® or a muscle relaxer like Botox® to smooth out wrinkles, Sculptra® helps restore lost collagen, naturally, and over a period of 3-5 treatments. The results last up to 2 years and are subtle, but dramatic.

Dr. Peers also combines Sculptra® with skin resurfacing, Botox® and in some cases Juvederm® or Radiesse® for his trademarked Ultimate Liquid Facelift™. While he can’t literally turn back the clock, you might think otherwise when you look into the mirror.

MAKE-UP TIPS:Mascara is the most dangerous piece of make-up to hang onto for long stretches of time because of bacteria. NEVER use mascara after four months – buy a new one!

Putting a tiny bit of white or light eyeshadow right where the upper and lower lids meet in the inside corner will brighten up your eyes like you wouldn’t believe.A big blush brush will make for a very sheer covering – for darker blush and better coverage, try a smaller brush.

Lipstick will last longer if you use lipliner on your entire lip before putting lipstick on. It binds to the liner, which binds better to the lip than lipstick does. You can still use the last remnants of lipstick inside the tube by using a Qtip and mixing with gloss.

The Snite Museum of Art on the campus of the University of Notre Dame held its 31st Annual Benefit Dinner honoring South Bend restauranteurs Pat and Bob Kill on Thursday, December 6, at the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center. The Kills funded a painting by artist Maria Tomasula of the Virgin of Guadalupe now on view in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. Generous benefactors of both the Snite Museum and the South Bend Symphony Orchestra, the couple is now helping to fund an endowment to support Latin American art at the Museum. Funds raised by the gala -- considered by some to be the unofficial start to the city's holiday season -- support educational activities at the Museum, which serves over 5,000 children annually through school tours, family programs and apprenticeship workshops.
