Project objectives
Create the right conditions for the development of sanitation microfinance in Tanzania: Help identify demand from households and
entrepreneurs for access to finance for sanitation
Generate interest from MFIs, banks and NGOs to offer sanitation microfinance products and support them for their development and roll-out
Generate interest from public institutions so that sanitation microfinance is adopted as part of a national financing policy for extending access to sanitation

Brief project overview
One-year action-research funded by SHARE and WaterAid
Goal is to improve the capacity of NGOs and financial institutions to provide sanitation microfinance to households, CBOs or small enterprises
Provide technical assistance in pilot testing sanitation microfinance products
Disseminate lessons learned to a wide audience in Tanzania and beyond

WaterAid – country anchor for this research programme
Trémolet Consulting (UK) – lead researcher, water and sanitation financing specialists
MicroSave (Kenya) – consultancy specialised in training and product development for MFIs, banks and NGOs
Up to four MFIs/banks/NGOs in Tanzania (to be identified)

Bring together interested actors of the sector and financial institutions to share knowledge and experiences on sanitation microfinance
Initiate the creation of a Sanitation and Hygiene Working Group
Identify MFIs and NGOs looking to take part in microfinance product development training
