Sea Turtle ConservationAnother successful and satisfying season of sea turtle

monitoring is winding itself to a close! The Loggerhead ladies have pretty much finished their treks onto the beach to lay their eggs, and we are now in the midst of watching the nests for signs of hatching. Three days after one of our faithful volunteers spots a hatch, the nest is dug. Sometimes quite a crowd has gathered to watch the tallying of the eggshells to see how large the clutch was and how many new hatchlings headed for the sea. On occasion they are even lucky enough to catch a straggler still buried in the sand and are able to help the tiny crea-ture to the Gulf. It certainly is a magical experience to see this little turtle go from being limp and inert to being a full-blown wriggling ball of energy. You set them onto the sand and they hobble -- pedal to the metal -- down those last few feet of beach, into the waves and then ... out to sea! We are more than happy to share this experi-ence with interested individuals. If you have mornings when you know you will be free from mid-July through September, give us a call at (239) 472-2329 extension 228 and we will be more than happy to give you the three-day head’s up on a nest dig and try our best to set you up to experience this wonder firsthand.

What’s New in 2007?This year longtime turtle volunteer and priceless co-

ordinator of all things sea turtle, Beverly Ball, decided it was time to leave a few of her more arduous turtle tasks for someone else to take on, while still spearheading many of the essential goings-on. SCCF hired Andrea Yacaginsky -- who has been with the Native Plant Nursery since June 2006 -- for this seasonal position. The move to part-time

Turtle Person has fit in flawlessly with both her schedule and her home-away-from-home. The Sea Turtle Office is conveniently located right inside the Nursery build-ing, and gives her a good reason to take a breather in the air conditioning. She is responsible for entering nesting data into the computer, keeping the office organized and accessible, taking and returning phone calls to the Turtle Office, as well as writing out a few reports and press releases here and there. She is glad to be of as much help to Bev and the other turtle volunteers as she can.

Sanibel’s west end beaches were selected to take part in a genetics-sampling project being undertaken by a student at the University of Georgia this year. A range of nests that were laid between June 15th and June 24th were chosen to take the samples from. Our valiant permittees undertook the less than pleasant task of obtaining a flipper from a (naturally) dead hatchling (or a hatched eggshell if no dead hatchling was to be had) while performing the routine post-hatch dig. The sample is then placed in a vial of ethanol, labeled with the date collected, nest number and position, and sent off with the others to be analyzed. The goal of this project is to determine what are the similarities and differences in the genetic stocks of loggerheads nesting in many different areas. A big thanks goes out to everyone that lent a helping hand in collecting those samples!

Nesting statistics for the 2007 seasonAs far as numbers of nests laid, the nesting num-

bers on Sanibel and Captiva continued the decline of in recent years. Sanibel is up a bit from last year. up by 12% in the east end and nearly double on the east end. Captiva, however, was down 35%. All areas of the islands have been hit with periods of unusually high tides due

Wildlife Habitat ManagementThe Wildlife Habitat Management Program has

continued over the past year to expand restoration efforts, improve our knowledge of the Island’s ecosystem through research, and increase awareness of our efforts.

The awarding of important grants and continued close relationships with our Island partners (the City of Sanibel, and J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge) have allowed for the planning/completion of new restoration projects, and the hiring of additional staff to assist with specific tasks related to our overall objectives.

StaffNew Staff: Brandon Munsell was hired in

November of last year as our new land manager. Previously, this position was rolled into the director’s job. Brandon will be taking on the day-to-day direction of land management activities under the guidance of our management plan, including non-native removal projects, plantings, prescribed fire and mowing.

Toby Clark was hired in March of this year as a shared field technician between the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge and SCCF. He will

split his time in half between the two partners. Toby’s job will be carrying out the tasks of land management such as invasive non-native control, mowing, plantings, and assisting with prescribed burns.

Existing Staff: Chris Lechowicz continues as our field biologist in charge of wildlife monitoring and data management. Chris also works throughout the organization handling computer and network tasks.

Victor Young continues to work as a field technician doing invasive non-native control, mowing, plantings, and assisting with prescribed burns. Seasonal field biologist Ron Gestwiki works on vegetation monitoring and seed collection during the winter months. Amanda Bryant, Cara Faillace and Vincent Farallo work as seasonal technicians on the Snowy Plover project.

Brad Smith directs the program, which includes handling grants, developing restoration and management plans, and coordinating research.

New FacilityThe long-awaited Wildlife Habitat Management

Building was completed in May. By the beginning of June, the Wildlife Habitat Management staff had completed moving of all its activities to the new

A section of the West Sanibel River Preserve (shaded area) showing ditches. The black lines indicate natural flowways, which have been retained; the white shows filled ditches. The new pond and rookery island is in the circled area.

facility. The facility includes office space, storage of maintenance and monitoring equipment, and a new nursery facility for the propagation of local genetic lines of native plants to enhance our preserves.

With this facility in place, the WHMP has the necessary space and basic equipment needed to better meet our restoration and management objectives. The facility will also serve as tangible evidence for granting agencies and other professionals of SCCF’s commitment to land stewardship.

ResearchSnowy plover research has continued this past year

to examine the factors influencing nesting success. Early results demonstrate the importance of certain characteristics of nest sites that can be useful in predicting good nesting habitat. We are also continuing to examine the role human disturbance plays in nesting success as well as the importance of prey abundance to successful fledging of hatchlings. These data will hopefully inform management decisions not only on Sanibel but throughout the state.

MonitoringEfforts to track trends in abundance of prey species on

conservation lands continue. These multiple-year trends will play an integral part in shaping our management activities and future restoration efforts by indicating when and where problems are occurring. They can also help to correlate any changes with regard to specific disturbance events (i.e. nutrients, fire, hurricanes, storm surges, etc.) or management activities.

This past winter and spring, WHMP staff, with help from a volunteer, were able to sort through and identify our backlog of aquatic invertebrate samples from the last four years. In the future, the task of sorting will be simplified by the collection of voucher specimens we now have for reference. These data are collected monthly during the wet season to serve as indicators of wetland health.

Vegetation monitoring continues in order to characterize our floral communities and monitor the success of our restoration and management efforts. These data are also being used in conjunction with GIS mapping to create vegetation maps for our preserves.

All of these data collection tasks can now be analyzed using new statistical software purchased in the past year. This software will allow us to find patterns in the data that will suggest testable hypotheses relating to how wildlife is responding to restoration and ways we can improve the function of our Island ecosystem.

ManagementOur prescribed fire program benefitted over the past

year with additional work to increase the accessibility of fire lines when conditions are wet. Many wet areas of fire lines were either elevated or covered in a hard base of crushed concrete. This will effectively extend our burn season by providing access further into the late summer and allow for earlier access in the spring.

Work continued this summer on the creation of the Periwinkle Hammock Trail. Several hundred additional plants were placed this year and the trail is being smoothed and mulched in preparation for a fall 2007 grand opening.

The West Sanibel River Preserve restoration was completed this summer. One hundred and thirty acres of invasive non-native vegetation were removed and over six miles of ditches were filled. In addition, four ponds were dug on the property and several areas of existing ditch were enhanced to better provide for wildlife. The Bald Eagles were back on the property this year and successfully raised two chicks.

Last year we started on the removal of all remaining stands of Australian pines from SCCF lands. This project, referred to as Last Stands, was started near Sandcastle Drive in June of 2005 and is expected to

be completed by the spring of 2008. The project also includes funding for re-planting the various properties where Australian pines have been cleared.

And not be overlooked, the newly acquired Bob Wigley Preserve is in the early planning stages for a major restoration project that will include the removal of invasive non-native vegetation but also the removal of spoil, the creation of a rookery island and the reconnection of wetlands to the Sanibel River.

The completion of these restoration projects will mark the end of major invasive non-native removal efforts on SCCF lands. More importantly, it will be the removal of these plants from all of the conservation lands on Sanibel! Ten years ago this seemed like anything but a reality but with continued persistence and support we find ourselves having turned a corner and we are now ready to face new challenges.

OutreachWHMP staff members have spoken at several

meetings of both professional peers and the general public in the past year to share information learned from our research and experiences in restoration and recovery of ecosystem function.

GrantsWe are currently still working on restoration

projects funded from grants reported in the 2005 and 2006 annual reports. These funds will continue to support work through the summer of 2008.

Additional grants include: • $50,000fromtheU.S.FishandWildlifeService

Marine Laboratory & RECON(River, Estuary & Coastal Observation Newwork

IntroductionThis was a year of transition

at the Marine Laboratory. Our scientists and staff observed a decline in water quality and habitat integrity caused by excessive rainfall and poor nutrient management. Discharges from Lake Okeechobee, for the sake of public safety, sent volumes of poor quality water into the waters surrounding Sanibel and Captiva. The increased use of seawall in the Caloosahatchee basin and the consequent loss of water retention and filtration associated with mangrove and marsh wetlands

also translated to degraded water quality in our estuary.

During this year, the data collected and the conclusions drawn from work conducted at the Marine Laboratory were critical in efforts to reverse the course in water management policy locally, regionally, and nationally. Recognizing the broader geographic context of these challenges, our scientists reached out to colleagues, bringing in expertise on harmful algae blooms, habitat degradation, and coastal eutrophication.

We have also made a concerted

effort to educate the public about the role of science in changing water pol icy by address ing diverse audiences and SCCF’s membership.

Finally, we said goodbye to the director, Dr. Steve Bortone, who launched the laboratory and put it on the right foot. He relocated to Duluth, Minnesota and is now the Director of the University of Minnesota’s Sea Grant Program. The momentum and credibility that he created during his tenure at the laboratory carries us forward into the next five years.

The new Wildlife Habitat Management facility

Page 8

Staff Upon Dr. Bortone's departure,

SCCF brought together the Board of Scientific Advisors to evaluate the Marine Laboratory’s contributions and to determine the qualities and characteristics of the next director. The search for the new director began in January 2007. A committee was formed to interview candidates and unanimously agreed to offer the position to Dr. Loren Coen of the Department of Natural Resources in South Carolina. Dr. Coen has accepted and will be joining the lab in fall 2007.

Dr. Eric Milbrandt served as interim director to ensure the continuation of laboratory activities. Dr. Milbrandt balanced the added duties of the director with his own studies and commitments. His research program on the genetic diversity of marine microorganisms and ecological interactions of seagrass communities has been vigorously pursued.

Dr. Milbrandt was invited to speak at “Ding” Darling Days, the City of Fort Myers Beach Civic Association, the Captiva Yacht Club, and at the Life Member Luncheon. He has also presented at two national and international scientific meetings, the American Soc i e ty o f L imnology and Oceanography and the International Society for Microbial Ecology. While Dr. Milbrandt juggled the director’s commitments, much of the administrative duties were assigned to Molly Dawson, Grant Administrator.

Dr. Richard Bartleson, research scientist, served as Sanibel and

Captiva’s red drift algae expert and headed up an investigation of species distributions and biomass of macroalgae around the islands. He has also begun a project to better predict seagrass growth responses to salinity, temperature and light. Rick also coordinated the visit of a team of highly regarded scientists to study harmful algal blooms, which have recently been documented in excess around Sanibel.

Dr. Michael Hannan has attended a number of seminars on Geographical Information Systems and has successfully obtained grants for software and course fees. Mike continually modifies our databases as our data needs evolve. Additionally, A.J. Martignette and Jeff Siwicke were transitioned from grant-supported staff to core staff as research assistants.

The lab has also seen changes in personnel for grant-sponsored projects. Jonathan Guinn visits seagrass sites monthly to examine

community changes over time. Brad Klement coordinates Spotted Seatrout otolith studies with the University of South Alabama and, as well, collects specimens from Pine Island Sound. Eric Berris was hired to study red drift algae around Sanibel Island. Two grants concluded and, with the conclusion of these grants, two staff positions were ended. Kim Cressman found full time employment with the City of Cape Coral as an environmental specialist and continues to maintain a professional connection to the Marine Laboratory.

Research ProgramsA major thrust of the 2007

Fundraising Campaign was to “Protect the Water.” RECON, which stands for River, Estuary & Coastal Observation Network, is an in situ water quality monitoring system. The eight RECON sensors (seven fixed locations and one

mobile sensor) will simultaneously transmit real-time spatial and temporal water quality data. This data will be available to the public through accessible and interactive pages which will be posted on our website, www.sccf.org.

This website, which is in the final stages of development as we go to press, will allow users to select multiple water quality criteria and then will automatically plot the data on a graph. It also provides archived water quality data from the sensors. Additionally, the RECON project has drawn significant public interest as well as attracted two major grants from the City of Sanibel and the Lee County Tourism Development Council.

Currently, there is one sensor deployed on Sanibel with seven more planned soon to populate the waterway from Lake Okeechobee

to Redfish Pass. The capital needs of the RECON project have been generously funded by SCCF members… Thank you!! Member contributions to this project support two full-time research assistants, Jeff Siwicke and A.J. Martignette, to monitor and maintain the sensors.

Grant-supported projects have focused on three main arenas during the past year: seagrasses, red drift algae and spotted seatrout. Seagrass research is a central component to the work of Drs. Milbrandt and Bartleson.

Grants with the following titles were sponsored this fiscal year by federal, state and local agencies:• Identification of Microbes

Critical to the Enhancement of Seagrass Restoration,

• Tape Grass TemperatureTolerances,

• Effects of Lake OkeechobeeD i s c h a r g e s o n t h e Caloosahatchee Estuary and Caloosahatchee River/Estuary,

• SubmergedAquaticVegetationMonitoring. These grants were awarded to

enhance and restore current seagrass beds in the estuary surrounding Sanibel and Captiva Islands as well as better characterize the water quality components necessary for improving seagrass health.

function in estuaries, providing habitat for juvenile fish and larger fish such as the spotted seatrout. Brad Klement, in partnership with Dauphin Island Laboratory in southern Alabama, has been evaluating the effects of hurricane disturbances on estuary habitats by measuring growth rates in juvenile and adult spotted sea trout. Brad will use the growth rates of sea trout from hurricane-affected areas to evaluate the extent of the seagrass losses on sea trout health.

Facilities and EquipmentQuite a few repairs and

upgrades were made to both the building and equipment in the past year to keep the laboratory operating. We received grant money to purchase a spectrophotometer for water quality analysis. Other facilities improvements included the addition of a 10’ x 20’ Ted Shed in the Redstart Facility pole barn. The "shed," which was funded by a grant from the South Florida Water Management District, houses Dr. Bartleson’s Tape Grass Temperature Tolerance study. While the shed

itself was assembled and anchored within a few days, the process of insulating and plumbing the building took nearly two months. Much of the design and labor was done by A.J. Martignette, with a few larger jobs contracted out to local vendors. The shed holds six 237 gallon tanks, four 25,000 BTU air conditioners, and assorted other equipment to keep a steady flow of water and control temperature.

Looking to the FutureWe are all looking forward

to welcoming our new director,

Dr. Loren Coen. His arrival will add another vitally needed researcher to the small but crucial collection of scientists on Sanibel and Captiva. Dr. Coen will further expand our already extensive collaborative efforts with his numerous contacts.

Dr. Milbrandt continues to partner with faculty at Florida Gulf Coast University and anticipates strengthening our relationship with this growing institution.

We have invested in a first-of-its kind coastal observation network (RECON) to track changes in water quality and we plan to provide the data to promote changes in water management and improvements in habitat quality. We are nearly set to launch RECON, which has been performing magnificently in field trials. A short publication has already been prepared from the data collected in the first deployment; it is in the peer review process. We anticipate launching the remaining seven fixed site sensors in fall 2007. As we move forward, look for our progress in the Member Update.

Natural Resource PolicyJust over one year ago the Natural Resource Policy

director position was created to bring our scientific knowledge to policy decision makers for natural resource protection. The natural resource impacts of the last few years have underscored the fact that the greatest threats to the quality of the island environment and economy originates far from our island borders. To effectively advocate for issues, the Foundation has engaged in policy issues at the local, regional, state and federal levels.

Our advocacy efforts this past year have been wide-ranging: Water quality, land use, protected species and legislative issues. In addition, every policy issue requires educational outreach to build awareness and involvement of our membership and the general public. This year we have seen the dramatic effect an educated, engaged and vocal community can have in advocating for our environment and quality of life.

Water QualityOf all the issues with which we are engaged,

water quality is the most far-reaching and immediate. Through our advocacy, education and community-building effort -- and the efforts of the City of Sanibel, the PURRE Water Coalition and others -- the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers stopped the implementation of a Lake Okeechobee regulation schedule in 2006 that would have brought more harm to the Caloosahatchee, the estuary and coastal waters. We continue to advocate for better options to improve delivery, timing and water quality from the lake.

Phosphate mining is an ongoing Land Use issue with a direct impact on water quality. Mining operations are responsible for the phosphorus enrichment of our coastal waters, which is linked to harmful algal blooms in surrounding waters and red drift algae on our beaches.

We have also been successfully engaged in a number of statewide water quality policy issues. These include Florida’s Designated Uses, the Impaired Waters Rule and Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDL). Designated Uses is intended to protect water quality and keep recreational waters “fishable and swimmable.” DEP has proposed revising our current five-class system to a matrix of seven human

uses and four aquatic life uses. The new matrix includes three categories of recreational waters ranging from “fishable/swimmable to splashable/fishable (no full body contact with this water) and unfishable/unswimmable (what recreational use is provided?). We continue to advocate for protective standards and fully fishable/swimmable recreational waters.

The Foundation is also engaged in the State standards for Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDL) for all impaired waters including the Caloosahatchee estuary. We continue to advocate for a water quality component for the C-43 reservoir. We are also working on fertilizer ordinances at local and regional levels to reduce nutrient loading from the land. Sanibel has passed one and we are currently working with Lee County. In the coming year we hope to develop standards for wastewater treatment plants, package plants and septic systems as well as a regional Stormwater initiative.

Land Use

On Land Use issues, we continue our fight to preserve three acres of black mangrove basin forest at South Seas on Captiva. In 2006, we joined the Captiva Civic Association to challenge the permit issued by the South Florida Water Management District. The Administrative Law Judge hearing the case found in our favor but left an option for Mariner Properties to revise their application. We will continue our efforts to protect this area through the Lee County andArmy Corps of Engineers permitting process.

Page 12

Fur the r in l and we s t ay engaged with Babcock Ranch. Erick Lindblad is the Lee County representative on the advisory group, Babcock Ranch Inc., that oversees and will eventually manage the state purchase of 73,000 acres. In addition, we are following the water resource issues on the proposed development of the western 17,900 acres.

Protected Species The key protected species policy

issue we face is a direct result of water quality degradation. As red drift algae accumulated on Sanibel beaches, island residents, the City and Foundation debated what to do about the algae and its affect on two protected species -- snowy plovers and sea turtles -- that nest on our sanctuary island beaches.

The Foundation policy and habitat management departments worked with City staff and residents on an island task force and with the regulatory agency to find a way to protect the nesting species and beaches while removing algae when it reaches harmful levels. For wildlife protection, we maintain our opposition to any "regular" beach cleanup, and we hope the drought this year will reduce the algae and eliminate the need for algae removal.

LegislativeThe State legislative session

was a busy one this year with some good initiatives and some that we worked to defeat. We supported the Lake Okeechobee and Estuary Recovery Act which

expands the Lake Okeechobee Protection Plan to include the estuaries. This is important because the Caloosahatchee receives 70 percent of the excess polluted water from the lake. We helped defeat a bill that would have reduced wetland protections and kept local municipalities from adopting more stringent local regulations to protect wetlands; another that would have disallowed local municipalities from passing more stringent fertilizer rules than the State; and defeated an amendment to the Babcock Ranch Management bill that would have allowed cypress logging in the wetlands on the State -owned lands of Babcock Ranch.

At the Federa l leve l we continue to support the passage of a Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) bill which funds the cost of the Federal share of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP) in Florida and water projects in other states. We took our request to

Washington, D.C., where we met with congressional office staff and representatives to promote water quality and river protection initiatives as part of River Action Day sponsored by American Rivers. In addition to WRDA, we requested their support of the Raw Sewage Overflow Community Right to Know Act, Clean Water Restoration Act and Wild and Scenic River Legislation. While sitting in the Senate gallery, we had an opportunity to observe the Senate discussion of the WRDA bill, which came to the floor during our trip. It passed the Senate 81 to 12. In conjunction with overwhelming support in the House (381 to 40), there appear to be sufficient votes to override a threatened Presidential veto.

It has been a very good first year for the new Policy department and we look forward to the opportunity to continue to protect our natural wonders through science-based policy.

Environmental EducationEducation staff continued to provide learning

experiences for widespread audiences both on and off the island. The environmental education department conducted diverse activities and programs designed to engage the community and visitors, create and maintain partnerships, and integrate the many aspects of SCCF’s work. Program participants included realtors, schoolchildren, local homeowners, and island visitors, to name just a few. Staff reached over 44,000 people this past fiscal year whether it was in one of our preserves, on the water, in the classroom, or in the yards of local homeowners. Audiences were wide-ranging, from adults to children of all ages.

We have benefited from an expanded porch, new entryway and ramp over the past year – it has provided much more space for programs and events, and greatly improved accessibility. The Nature Center underwent major construction in the parking lot from August 2006 to the early months of 2007. Structures were added that eventually allowed the main building and the nursery building to get hooked up to the city’s sewer system. A lift station was then built on the grounds and will be maintained by the City of Sanibel.

StaffKristie Anders completed her 19th year as the

education director. She continued long-standing programs geared toward educating new island residents, the realtor community, and the eco-tourist population. She fostered the long-term partnership with Captiva Cruises and spearheaded outreach on water quality issues.

Dee Serage-Century, our Landscaping for Wildlife educator, has been working at SCCF for 23 years (five years as nursery assistant and manager; 18 years as educator). This past year Dee initiated an alligator education program that was very well attended, she continued landscaping design house calls and classes, maintained our butterfly house and ethnobotany garden, and worked with our education intern, Steve Mickletz, to promote butterfly education in all fourth grade classrooms in Lee County. Steve returned to SCCF for a second internship and continued helping us with video projects, school programs, and our regular, weekly programs.

Richard Finkel completed his seventh year as environmental educator with an emphasis on schoolchildren. Richard conducted many of our outdoor programs ranging from kayak trips and evening astronomy programs, to educational activities with schoolchildren. Richard actually began his tenure with the Foundation back in 1990 when he was an education intern under Kristie and he periodically worked as an educator on Sanibel throughout the following decade. He then returned as a full time staff person in 2000.

That same year Melissa Upton was brought on board as the Nature Center manager. She spent much of her time this past year coordinating programs and organized trainings and field trips. Melissa oversees operations with regard to educational activities at the Nature Center and spent quite a bit of time working on Nature Center improvements and off-site kiosks. The education department as a whole reflects 65 years of work experience with and for the Conservation Foundation. We take great pride and joy in sharing our knowledge with others.

Learning Experiences

The Nature Center attracted 8,972 people to its exhibits, trails, nature shop and bookstore, while approximately 1,100 people visited the Butterfly House.

Richard Finkel leads a school group through the SCCF Center Tract.

Page 14

Our ongoing programs attracted a wide variety of individuals. The following is a sampling of many of them:

Richard, Kristie, Steve and volunteers led 318 people on Turtle Tracks, teaching people about the forces shaping barrier islands and the variety of marine life that has uniquely adapted to this highly dynamic ecosystem.

Richard introduced 165 people to the night sky through Stars Over Sanibel.

Richard taught 614 students and 71 of their chaperones about the interior wetland and upland ecosystems during 21 school visits to the Nature Center.

Volunteers brought 250 bird enthusiasts on weekly Birding in the Preserves walks through the Sanibel Gardens Preserve, Johnston Preserve, Pick Preserve, and the Center Tract trails.

Guided kayak adventures in cooperation with Captiva Kayak Company gave 63 people a chance to paddle through the pristine wilderness of Buck Key.

Weeds ‘n Seeds volunteers led 250 people on outings throughout Southwest Florida to better understand plant communities of Southwest Florida.

Volunteers and staff led trail tours, narrated boat trips, and guided people on the beach. Volunteer trail guides led 513 visitors along the Center Tract trails, teaching them about the interior wetland ecosystem and habitat management. Captiva Cruises volunteers narrated boat trips for 21,482 visitors during explorations of Pine Island Sound.

Weekly guided walks continued in the ethnobotany garden. The Cultural History of Florida’s Native Plants program taught 126 participants about human uses of native plants for food, shelter, art, and medicine.

Richard took 107 children and their chaperones to the river to learn about the interior wetlands.

Melissa coordinated two island cleanups, Open House & Earth Day celebrations, and vehicle decorations for the 4th of July parade. These events reached approximately 3,000 people and provided an opportunity to educate people of all ages about our efforts and accomplishments.

Landscaping for WildlifeIn year eleven of encouraging

residents to view their home landscapes as healthy sanctuaries for both wildlife and people, Dee conducted 45 house calls to members seeking our advice and expertise. In addition, 245 people learned how to landscape with Florida native plants through classes and tours.

Information on landscaping for butterflies reached 565 people through programs for the Sanibel Audubon Society and butterfly house tours. “Florida Butterflies and Their Caterpillars” was also widely distributed through the sale of copies to garden centers, botanical gardens, school districts, and other nature centers. Approximately 100 people attended programs on island nesting birds and many more visitors enjoyed watching the nature center video monitors connected to the new bird box nesting cameras. Visitors watched the barn owls,

great crested flycatchers, and pileated woodpeckers raise their chicks. Dee created a new educational program on alligators that focuses on their biology and the history of gators and humans in Florida. This popular program attracted 495 people.

Outreach to SchoolsA major component o f

the Foundation’s multi-faceted Education Department is working with local Lee County students. The goal is to inspire them through experiences designed to increase their awareness and understanding of the natural world and participation in its preservation. Richard, Dee and Steve were able to reach 4,500 students in Lee County schools during the 2006-2007 school year. Outreach to schools included environmental education activities at the Pick Preserve with The Sanibel School students, ecology programs with visiting school groups to the Nature Center, and butterfly life-cycle education.

For a fourth year, thousands of schoolchildren and adults learned about the life cycle of our state butterfly, Zebra longwing.

Presentations were made to fourth grade classes in different schools around Lee County. One living butterfly life cycle kit was delivered to each school. Each kit included: one screened box (built by our volunteer “Hammerheads”) that held the Zebra eggs, caterpillars, and pupae for the students to observe and then release. A container of the larval host plant, Corky Stemmed Passion Vine, was included for the caterpillars to eat and was later planted in the school’s butterfly garden. Following a 30-minute presentation to each fourth grade classroom, educational materials were distributed which included copies of “Florida Butterflies and Their Caterpillars” and a laminated picture handout describing the life cycle of the Zebra longwing. A sign attached to each box acknowledged the Conservation Foundation.

Other OutreachOne of the exciting things

about working at the Foundation is not knowing the challenges that

lie around the next bend. Kristie explored options with the Florida Communities Trust and Trust for Public Lands about future land acquisition projects. She spent more time with community organizations and homeowner associations to share with them the mission of SCCF and the work that lies ahead with work in the marine lab, habitat management, and education. Some of the groups are annual favorites such as the Brown Baggers at the Congregational Church, Kiwanis and Rotary. There were even two opportunities to address the Sanibel Captiva Audubon Society.

In order to keep up on current issues and trends, public meetings were attended and information disseminated in classes and talks throughout the year. The topics of Everglades Restoration, the Caloosahatchee and the estuaries were of particular interest this year to residents and visitors. The educational efforts resulted in more active participation by community members and organizations in

current environmental events, meetings and public comment.

Relationships with the local realtors continue to grow. The Sanibel and Captiva Islands Association of Realtors still requires all new members of their organization to attend a class held at SCCF. In addition, practicing realtors may opt to receive a Sanibel and Captiva Islands specialist designation that includes an additional class. Annually, an intensive, state-certified course is offered to realtors who are required to complete 14 hours of special studies in order to maintain their licenses. The class has now been taught several times for the Cape Coral realtors as well. This past spring, candidates for statewide offices of the Florida Association of Realtors (FAR) traveled by boat throughout Pine Island Sound for a deeper appreciation of the estuary and the importance of good water quality for coastal properties. As a result, in part, of the trip most candidates made water an important part of their issues platform.

The Lee County Visitor and Convention Bureau/Tourist Development Council (TDC) continued its commitment to water issues. In a presentation in February to the TDC, the marine lab’s RECON array system was introduced and applauded as the only good news they had heard that day. It was appreciated that individual citizens, a handful of businesses and City of Sanibel funds had been acquired to help in the efforts to improve water quality, independent of governmental action. TDC asked Kristie to put together a two-day Melissa Upton led a field trip to the Fakahatchee Strand.

Page 16

cont. from left Environmental Educationworkshop for some of their staff, their advertising agency and PR staff. From that came great opportunities for outreach education.

LeeWaterFacts.com is a website maintained by VCB to provide timely and accurate information about the river, estuaries and beaches. In an interview with Kristie, there are numerous suggestions for people to help with the issues and make changes in their own lives to improve water quality. The interview also talks about some of the qualitative changes that have been seen over the past 20 years. Other people interviewed for the site include Dave Jensen and Ralph Woodring. Straightforward information about red tide, drift algae and the change in water quality are available on this site.

Assistance in the form of review/editing for accuracy was provided for their new visitor guide which includes ID of plants, birds, shells and other wildlife in their native habitat. In addition a short video was produced encouraging visitors to spend time bonding with nature and family in the outdoors. It encourages people to slow down and just take time to stop and let nature into their lives while bonding with their families. Also found in the booklet are messages about how to be a good visitor, i.e. ways to lighten their impact on the ecosystem and tips to minimize disturbance to wildlife. All of these media pieces are available online, and their research shows that over 70% of our visitors spend time researching this area before arriving.

Captiva Cruises remains a stalwart partner for education of residents and visitors. Special trips to

explore the waters around the islands gave our islanders perspectives on the estuary they did not have before. These special charters including the popular Fish House trips were offered several times throughout the season. The company offers the participants of our Resident Environmental Orientation a trip out on to Pine Island Sound as an integral part of the classes. Volunteer docents boarded the Lady Chadwick almost daily to provide an in-depth narrative to passengers.

Some past work of the Foundation’s educators just keeps on going. Fifteen years after it was originally filmed, PBS’s Reading Rainbow still airs a program filmed on North Captiva featuring the coastal and estuarine environment; Sunny Days magazine continues to provide -- at no cost to us -- a full page article about the Foundation and its work; The Visitor Television Channel aired on Sanibel and Captiva runs a program about our work several times each day. These media pieces are far reaching and help more people know the work being done to conserve Sanibel, Captiva and the waters that surround us.

Call UsWhile we teach, we learn, and learning helps us

discover new possibilities. We would like you to join us in that discovery and invite your neighbors to do the same. Help us reach deeper into the community by giving us an opportunity to teach. If you have a group of interested individuals who would like to learn more about the nature on and around the islands, call us.

Native Plant NurseryThe Native Plant Nursery

has just completed a whirlwind of a year! In the midst of day-to-day operations, we achieved a record-breaking year of sales all while organizing field trips and forming new partnerships with other agencies and non-profits. Many visitors have commented about the high quality of our plants as well as the overall appearance of the nursery. We sincerely appreciate the support that we have been getting from our regular customers, members, and first-time visitors.

Volunteers, Interns, and StaffThis year the nursery enlisted

a dedicated crew of 36 volunteers to assist in a variety of tasks, from potting and weeding to cleaning and planting seeds. They spent over 1,200 hours in the nursery, tackling anything that staff asked. We wouldn’t be able to do it without their help!

Last June, Andrea Yacaginsky arrived as our newest nursery intern. After her original six-month stint, she was such an asset to nursery operations that we asked her to stay for an additional six months. We are happy to report that as of June of 2007, Andrea was offered (and accepted) a six-month

staff position, working half time in the nursery and serving as the Sea Turtle Program coordinator for the other half of her time. At the end of this turtle season, Andrea will be continuing on as full time nursery staff, helping out with day-to-day nursery operations and spearheading our expanding landscaping services.

As Andrea transitioned into a staff position in June, we also welcomed a new intern to the nursery, Tara Landa. Tara comes from Gainesville, Florida, and brings a delightful enthusiasm for plants and the natural world. She will be with us through the fall until the end of 2007.

Lew For t , ou r Nur s e r y assistant manager, continued on in his efforts to propagate any and every plant native to our region. Happily, he is having great success in growing many different species by seed, including many plants previously grown only by vegetative cuttings here in the nursery. Jenny Evans, Nursery manager, spent the year coordinating the Captiva Community Panel’s grant program as well as promoting the nursery through newspaper articles, public

speaking, and Landscaping for Wildlife housecalls.

Landscaping for Wildlife & Education

The nursery sponsored a full array of educational opportunities this past year. Landscaping for Wildlife educator Dee Serage-Century and Nursery manager Jenny Evans continued the popular one-on-one “housecall” visits. Dee also taught numerous classes in landscape design, butterfly gardening, and plant selection. This year, the nursery went “off-campus,” with guided field trips to the salt marsh of Little Pine Island, the scrublands of Archbold Biological Station, and two swamp walks in the Fakahatchee Strand State Preserve. Thanks to Barbara Bolt for organizing the logistics of these outings!

Partnerships

The nursery continued its cooperation with many local agencies again this year. With the support of the Captiva Community Panel (CCP), the nursery participated in a grant project from the State of Florida’s Division of Forestry.

Page 18

Through the CCP’s grant, Captiva homeowners had the opportunity to receive a 75% discount on native trees to aid in reforestation from Hurricane Charley damage. To date, 1,191 trees of 31 native species have been delivered and planted on 50 different Captiva properties. There is still a small portion of the grant remaining, and the project is expected to be completed by early 2008.

Municipal plantings with the City of Sanibel also continued this past summer. Nursery staff worked on projects along the roadside buffers of Sanibel-Captiva Road and West Gulf Drive, as well as improvements to the Tarpon Bay beach access, a buffer at the corner of Nerita and Middle Gulf Drive, the medians on the east end of Periwinkle Way, and a median on the corner of Palm Ridge and Periwinkle Way.

The nursery also assisted in replanting efforts with J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge. In addition to supplying a variety of species to replace invasive plant removal, the nursery grew approximately 700 red mangroves for planting on the Refuge’s spoil islands in Pine Island Sound. The nursery also was granted a permit to collect seeds and cuttings within the Refuge, allowing nursery staff to propagate previously unavailable plant species.

This year, the nursery was the recipient of a grant from the Florida Native Plant Society. Although the nursery has been a long-time member of the organization, this is the first time that it has been a recipient of an award from them. The project is an experiment in propagating Florida Mayten (Maytenus

phyllanthoides), a threatened plant found in mangrove ecosystems. If successful, one half of the plants will be planted on local conservation lands, either owned by SCCF, the City of Sanibel, or "Ding" Darling. The other half of the plants will be available free of charge to nurseries who are interested in propagating this plant and making it available within the nursery trade.

Operations

The nursery had another exciting year in physical improvements to our facility. We finally completed repairs to our shade house screening, which was originally damaged by Hurricane Charley and with additional damage inflicted by Hurricane Wilma. The nursery also obtained a utility trailer to pull behind our truck. This makes plant buying trips doubly efficient as we can load the entire back of the truck as well as fill up the trailer with plants. Thanks again to a generous supporter for the purchase of this equipment. We have made at least eight plant buying trips in our new vehicles in this past year alone!

The nursery has also completed an overhaul of our inventory tracking, accounting, and invoicing software. Previous to 2007, all accounting and inventory procedures were computed by hand. Many customers to the nursery will notice that we are no longer handwriting receipts; all transactions are being processed by our new point-of-sale system, making the bookkeeping and inventory more efficient and streamlined.

The annual Life Member Luncheon took place on Thursday, January 18 at the Sanibel Harbour Resort and Spa. Life Members dined in the Island Room with a view of the Caloosahatchee. Each department head at the Foundation presented a report to the members showcasing their area’s activities and accomplishments during the year.

The Foundation’s third annual Art Auction raised over $22,000to support its intern program. To kick off the event Bank of the Islands hosted a meet-the-artists reception with champagne, wine and hors d’oeuvres on Thursday, February 1.

The auction at the Sanibel Community House on the evening of Tuesday, February 6 began with an open bar sponsored by Bank of the Islands and hors d’oeuvres catered by Bailey’s General Store and sponsored by John and Sheila Morley. While prospective bidders enjoyed food and conversation, they viewed the art and had the opportunity to vote for their three favorite artists.

Erick welcomed everyone and

spoke of the interns’ immeasurable contributions to the Foundation. “They give us energy,” he said.

Ente r t a in ing a s a lways , Auctioneer and former Trustee Warren Schwab advised the audience to “Bid often and bid high!”

The first artwork that set the pace for the evening was -- again this year -- Helen Baller’s hand-woven basket on a cherry base table, which drew numerous bids and was purchased by Wayne and LindaBoydfor$2,400.Balleralsoreceived second place in the favorite artist vote.

Lucas Century was first place for favorite artist and really had the crowd going with high bids on a deeply etched large bowl that he ended up auctioning off three times,bringinginover$2,400tothe Foundation. Charlie Frese’s gorgeous Dinkin’s Bayou Fish Lamp was voted the third favorite item of the evening.

Schwab kept the bidding active with his humorous comments as Foundation interns moved through the audience to give a close-up view

VolunteersOur volunteers continue to sustain the SCCF

with their expertise and dedicated hard work. We had 707 volunteers work a total of 19,676 hours, which is the equivalent of 10 full-time staff positions. The actual number is probably higher because tracking our volunteers and their hours is not an exact science, and not everyone keeps a record of and reports their hours. However, keeping track of volunteer hours is important to the Foundation for receiving grant money, for reporting purposes, and of course to recognize those who give of their time, energy, skills and talent. A special thanks to our volunteers who help us protect wildlife habitat on and around the islands of Sanibel and Captiva!

Board of Trustees and Committees: The Board of Trustees and six committees kept the Foundation on track by assisting with business needs, special events planning, land acquisition, communications, and fund-raising. Forty-two committee members logged 1,243 hours.

Birding at the Preserves: Sixteen volunteers led 13 bird watch outings in the Foundation’s preserves for a total of 443 hours.

Butterfly House: Three volunteers maintained our Butterfly House and guided visitors for 160 hours sharing their knowledge of these beautiful winged insects.

Captiva Cruises: Nine docents gave natural history and estuary talks aboard the Lady Chadwick for a total of 586 hours.

Carpentry Crew or “Hammerheads:” Sixteen hammerheads maintained the Foundation’s facilities, finished building two off-site kiosks, expanded the Nature Center porch and built a ramp up to the porch. They kept busy at the new Wildlife Habitat Management facility creating desks, cabinets, bookshelves, tables and benches. The Hammerheads also built a new platform for the butterfly house, improved parking lot lighting, assisted with sewer hook-up, and helped to install cameras in nesting bird boxes. This crew of hard-working volunteers accrued 4,362 hours.

Habitat Management: Six volunteers spent 153 hours eliminating invasive, non-native vegetation, and assisting with the creation and maintenance of trails on our conservation lands.

Landscaping for Wildlife: Thirty-six nursery volunteers helped with potting, weeding, and plant propagation. They also sold and delivered native

plants for a total of 1,200 hours.Nature Shop and Bookstore: Thirty-six friendly

volunteers greeted our visitors, oriented them to the exhibits and trails, tended the shop, stocked the shelves, and sold nature-oriented gifts and books for a total of 2,261 hours.

Office: Thirty-two volunteers sent out numerous mailings, answered the phone, wrote letters, entered computer data, and tracked membership. They logged a total of 1,576 hours.

Sea Turtle Conservation Program: Ninety-three sun-burned volunteers with sand in their shoes and bugs in their faces, driven by the love of this ancient mariner, spent 5,062 hours walking and driving the beaches, marking nests, recording data, making signs, educating residents, and coordinating with the state’s Sea Turtle Recovery Program.

Shorebird Monitoring: Ten volunteers spent 314 hours identifying shorebird nesting habitat on Sanibel, walking the beaches looking for nests, marking nests, recording data, and monitoring fledgling success.

Special Events: 386 volunteers (yes, that’s right) helped to plan and implement our numerous events and fundraisers for 1,784 hours. These included…an Earth Day celebration, Annual Meeting, Tennis Tournament, Chamber After Hours reception, Open House, Island-style Art Auction and two island-wide cleanups – the Coastal Cleanup and the Great Island Pick-Up.Trail Guides: Seventeen volunteers introduced visitors to the ecology and natural history of our Center Tract trail system for 374 hours.

Weeds and Seeds: Five folks with a passion for botany spent 158 hours surveying Foundation and other preserved lands identifying plants to develop inventories and document changes in their distribution.

cont. from page 3 Sea Turtle Conservationto Tropical storm Barry in June and Hurricane Dean in August, which covered or washed out too many nests for comfort. What can you do against Mother Nature... and should you? The graph on Page three gives you an idea of the decline in Sea Turtle nests we have monitored over the past ten years on Sanibel and Captiva, and makes one think twice over the impact we humans are having on the natural world in such a very short time period.

Who Makes the Sea-Turtle Program Go Round? Each and every one of our volunteers, permit-

tees, and interested folks like you! Nearly a hundred volunteers put in over five thousand hours of hard, sand-slogging, beach-tromping labor this season. For

all the early mornings, all the voracious insects, all the shovel-slinging nest digs, illegal beach furniture, trash pickup, and impromptu public education... we are profoundly grateful. Spearheading these efforts were the ever-efficient Tory and Bill Burch on Sanibel’s East End, all of our West End jeep drivers coordinated by the irreplaceable Beverly Ball, and of course the One Man Captiva Turtle Crew, Sam Landry! To you as well as everyone that helps with strandings, maintaining our jeep, fixing our computer bugs, printing flyers, charting out nest maps, coordinating Adopt-a-Nest paperwork, along with anything else we’ve forgotten: a warm and heartfelt Thank You for all that you’ve done!

The only word to describe the successful FY06-07 Annual Fund Drive is – whirlwind!!

From kickoff to closing, SCCF’s neighbors and members helped us reach and exceed the $3 millionAnnual Fund Drive goal in just 140 days. That remarkable effort in a remarkably short amount of time reinforces the oft-heard campaign message – we were facing great challenges and extraordinary opportunities, all at the same time. Thanks to the 1,400 donors listed below, we have met the “Preserve the Land – Protect the Water”

fundraising goal. The campaign proceeds allowed us to acquire the 27 acres of wildlife habitat along Casa Ybel Road, capturing the last stretch of the Sanibel River. That entire habitat will now be known as The Bob Wigley Preserve, in honor of the well-known islander who has supported so many local causes for SCCF and other organizations. Within the preserve there will be three additional named tracts – the John and Mary Jo Boler Family Tract, the Pete and Pat Allen Family Tract, and the Messengers

Land Protection

The Sanibel River corridor 40-year project was completed with the acquisition of the 27-acre Bob Wigley Preserve.

of Healing Winds Tract. There will be interpretive signage and a kiosk within the preserve, accessible from the bike path once the initial habitat restoration has been completed.

In response to the water quality challenges facing our estuary, Annual Fund Drive proceeds are also being used to create and staff a new coastal observatory system featuring eight RECON sensors. RECON stands for River, Estuary, and Coastal Observation Network and aptly describes the scope of its mission. The SCCF Marine Research Laboratory scientists will deploy the sensors to monitor water quality at points within our estuary and coastal waters and up the Caloosahatchee to Lake Okeechobee. We are excited about collecting real-time data to address and improve the water management policies affecting Southwest Florida.

In addition to the major donors already mentioned, there were three other gifts in the form of challenge grants that were extremely helpful to the momentum of the campaign.

Many thanks to Dean and Shirley Skaugstad, Deborah and John La Gorce, and Roberta and Philip Puschel for making them possible. For the first time, the Annual Fund Drive was promoted through advertising sponsored by generous business partners. Many thanks to the following for supporting our print and television ads – Bank Of The Islands, Molnar Electric, Lighthouse Café, Key Lime Bistro, Sanibel Captiva Trust Company,

Doc Ford’s Sanibel Rum Bar & Grille, Karen Bell Team/VIP Realty, Lily & Co, West Wind Inn, Periwinkle Park, Community Bank of Sanibel-Captiva, Nave Plumbing, Sanibel Marina/Ireland Yacht Sales, Bailey’s General Store, McMurray&Nette/VIP Realty, and COMCAST. Thanks are also due to SCCF Trustee Bruce Rogers for tirelessly encouraging this support from the business community.
