The concept was derived from wine. When wine is created from grapes, it is a complete transformation. The same wine, once it has aged, becomes richer and now transforms into something even more precious.

The ground floor and outside area was inspired by red wine, and so had hues from red to violet. It was full of energy due to the colored lights, and overall ambience.

In contrast, the first floor was inspired by white wine, and had tints from white to gold. The ambience here was more relaxed and romantic.

Perspective View - Reception

Inspiration was derived from the delicate perforations of lace that form such breathtaking patterns.

Aluminium composite panels were perforated in a lacy pattern to effect an inspirational mood in the public areas of the office.

Detail - Reception Desk

The walls and ceiling panel of the meeting room were created with the perforated panels and had the central placement in the space.

A dry landscaping area was located between the two executive offices, as well as in the reception area.

The concept was that of Ephemeral to Concrete: an idea from someone’s imagination becoming a concrete reality.

My design was derived from the IVS Logo, which is the one symbol that stands for both the School and the Alumni Association.

The program was divided in two parts, as was the plan, into Permanent Display, to be changed every 6 months, and Temporary Display, to be changed every 2 months.

All artwork and design that could not be displayed on panels, wall shelves and pedestals would be projected on the screens.

The space would also advertise Indus Valley as a school and the projects undertaken by the Alumni Association.

Reach OutTeen Initiative

Page 13: Sana Mahfooz Graduation Portfolio

Teens need a place where they can mingle, study, learn, create, and work through their problems. They need a small scale, portable and prototypical space that is adaptable to various methods of use. My thesis focuses on creating such a space. The Teen Center is comprised of individually designed 40’ containers that can be put together in various combination depending on the restrictions of the site.

Permutation 1- Exterior Perspectives

Page 14: Sana Mahfooz Graduation Portfolio

Teens need a space where they can involve themselves in constructive activities as a way to work trough their problems and as an outlet for excess energy, an opportunity for socialization and creating a sense of community.

Permutation 2- Exterior Perspectives

A wasted resource in Karachi, where the project is based, are parks. They are spaces designated for the community, but as they are not maintained, they are mostly left unused. My strategy for situating a social project in a park revolved around the criteria: mobile, cost effective & low maintenance. My program consisted of three main areas: Art, Social, and Fitness, with an Admininistrative unit.

Permutation 3- Exterior Perspectives

Page 16: Sana Mahfooz Graduation Portfolio

My concept was Metamorphosis: a change that happens within, as time passes, that starts to reflect without, bit by bit, until the outside realises all the hopes and dreams that were within.

Solar power has been used for energy for the center. Each container has its own system of solar panels and batteries.

The sides collapse to form the floor plane in order to expand the seating space in the cafe, while a railing opens up for safety. The chairs in the cafe can also be used outside the container by turning them onto their side.

The seating in the lounge area has a niche where members can exchange books, magazines, newspapers etc.

The studio space can be further divided into two with the use of a partition wall, in case a class is being held. Along one side are drawing boards attached to a frame in A4 and A3 sizes to be used with the donkeys. The donkeys themselves collapse to form pedestals for exhibition use. The other side has shelves for canvases with collapsible stools in slots below them.
