2019 SAALM Juror StatementEach and every aspect of our lives informs how we perceive art. A singular mo-ment in childhood, years of cumulative experiences, travels, relationships, joy and struggle, the epic and the quotidian, even a conversation over this morning’s coffee may affect how we engage with the visual expression of someone else’s distinctive journey in this world.
When called upon as a juror, I am acutely aware of the incredible subjectivity inherent in the task at hand. Simultaneously, I make a conscious effort to try to step outside myself. I attempt to consider what I intellectually know contributes to a strong piece—mastery of art’s formal elements such as line, shape, form, space, texture, value, color. I observe these components to assess and understand how an artist manipulates them, tells stories with them, makes magic from them, and brings something into being that did not previously exist.
This complex balancing act between the heart, the mind, and the eyes is a phenom-enon we all can experience when we take the opportunity to find a quiet moment to pause, stand in close proximity to art, and allow it to speak to us. Sometimes the resulting encounter is brief. Just a simple acknowledgement or a nod of recognition before we part. In other instances, the appreciation goes deeper. We are held to the spot. We marvel at what we see and are astonished or surprised by what we feel. We are measurably moved by the connection. When we pull ourselves away, the sensation of the interaction lingers. In ways minute or monumental, the exchange has changed us. We carry that moment forward and may find ourselves returning to it with wonder or even gratitude.
As you enjoy this exhibition, my hope is that you will allow yourself the time to contemplate not only what you see, but also what you bring to a work of art—to ponder how your past and present influence what happens while you look. My desire is that you will try to pivot between the subjective and the objective, taking careful notice of that complicated choreography. That you will trust your own heart, your mind, and your eyes. That you will encounter things that captivate and delight you, challenge you, cause you to question, and even to ask your-self “why?” My wish is that you will celebrate the range of creative expression offered by these talented artists and join me in extending hearty congratulations to the distinguished team who made The San Antonio Art League and Museum’s 89th Annual Exhibition possible.
It has truly been an honor,

EXHIBITED ARTWORK
AfterwordThe annual San Antonio Artists Exhibition is open to all artists with established residence in the State of Texas including the armed forces personnel stationed in Texas. With its objective in promoting artistic excellence in the art community, the annual exhibition welcomes creative artworks by all media except jewelry and video.
The current exhibition is the 89th open event of San Antonio Art League and Museum (SAALM) in its more than 106 years of establishment. It grew out of the fabled Edgar B. Davis Competitions of the late 1920s. Ever since numerous well-known regional and national artists have participated in this annual competition event.
Each year an Exhibition Committee is assigned by the SAALM Board to organize this event. An invited juror with outstanding background in the art and cultural fields judges all the submitted artworks. The Juror has the complete liberty in making acceptance and award decisions.
The SAALM members, patrons, supports, and business corporations donate all the award prizes. The artwork of the Onderdonk Purchase Award is added to the SAALM permanent collection, which is exhibited annually on a rotation basis.
The 89th Artists Exhibition accepted sixty-eight (68) artworks in various media and genres. Twenty (20) of the exhibited artworks were awarded. We had received a record high number of 379 artworks from 147 individual artists via both on-line and in-person submissions. All are of high quality with outstanding artistic merits. Due to the limitation of exhibition space, only 17.9 % of artworks could be included in the exhibition.
SAALM sincerely appreciates the contributions of all the participants and strongly encourages your future entries.
