COMMITTEE REPORT

SAM/Wyeth Visiting Professors

In 1984, Dr. Elizabeth McAnamey, then President of the Society for Adolescent Medicine, established an ad-hoc committee to consider the possibility of

a visiting professorship in adolescent med- icine. That committee proceeded over the next year to consider the feasibility of such a program and to provide a concrete proposal delineating the rationale for such a program and the logistics for its imple- mentation, This final proposal was accepted by the Executive Committee, and the critical step of ob- taining funding was undertaken. Wyeth Laborato- ries was contacted, and they enthusiastically agreed to shoulder the financial obligations of such a pro- gram. Once the program had been outlined in prin- ciple and concrete support had been obtained, the process was begun to establish the program on a permanent basis and select the inaugural recipient.

The first Visiting Professor is Dr. H. Verdain Barnes, whose award was announced at the Presi- dential Banquet of the annual SAM meeting in Bos- ton, Massachusetts, in March 1986. During the ensuing months six applications were made for Dr. Barnes’ visit. The selection for the site of the visit

was made by the Visiting Professorship Committee and approved by the Executive Committee at their November meeting. The program that was selected was the Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine, and the visit to that program will take place in the late Spring of 1987.

The second annual Visiting Professor has been selected and will be Dr. Richard G. MacKenzie of the Los Angeles Childrens Hospital, Los Angeles, California. Dr. MacKenzie’s award will be formally announced at the Seattle meeting in March 1987, and applications will be solicited for his visit through the ensuing months. Applications forms for Dr. MacKenzie’s Professorship will be available by writ- ing to Dr. David W. Wells, Chairman of the Visiting Professorship Committee, 8284 N. Sunburst Trail, Parker, CO 80134.
