The smartphone CMOS image sensor(CIS) has grown very rapidly over the past years. The present state-of-the-art of CMOS technology provide better resolution and small pixel, low power consumption, and cost improvements. In this context, Samsung is a major player among CIS manufacturers and high-end smartphone suppliers. Therefore, this full reverse costing study has been conducted to provide insight on technology data, manufacturing cost and selling price of the Samsung Galaxy S series camera module including Galaxy S7, Galaxy S8, Galaxy S9+, Galaxy S10+ and Galaxy S20 Ultra. Also, we included the summary for the other Samsung CIS smartphones seiresincluding Galaxy Notes Series, Galaxy A series, Samsung Fold and Galaxy J series.

Recent years, we observed that Samsung has roll-out multi-camera smartphones. For example, Samsung Galaxy S20 Ulta has a quad camera with a 108 MP Main, 12MP Ultra-wide, 48MP Telephoto, and DepthVision with a 40MP front-facing camera. Although it has a lot of benefits and challenges. The Galaxy S20 Ulta has integrated periscope for rear telephoto camera. This is the first Samsung smartphone camera that integrates a prism in the optical part. Thanks to the prism, the CIS receives light at 90° compared to the direction of the photo taken. This folded optics provide extra room to move optical module in comparison with standard telephoto camera module.

Moreover, the total silicon area per smartphone is 210.8mm² for the latest Samsung’s S20 Ultra, compared with 118 mm² for Samsung’s S10 Plus excluding depth camera. Also, the total volume per smartphone has increased to 6057 mm3 to 2784 mm3 for the same.

In conclusion, the report includes a complete technology and cost analysis of the Galaxy S7, Galaxy S8, Galaxy S9+, Galaxy S10+ and Galaxy S20 Ultra camera module that includes the CIS die, the lens module, the prism, the voice coil motor (VCM) and the housing. Bottom line, we perform a detailed teardown to identify the CMOS manufacturing technology and its 3D integration format, such as cu-cu hybrid bonding or through-silicon-via (TSV) connections.
