My 4-H Story

I would like to tell you a little about myself and what I’ve done in Cedar Pines 4-H for the past three years. My name is Kathryn Combs and I’m fourteen years old. This is my ninth year attending Chrysalis Charter School. Next year I will be going to Anderson New Technology High School. I live with my parents and one of my sisters in Cottonwood, California. I also have an older brother and sister who both were in 4-H. They were in the Cottonwood 4-H group. Some of my interests are doing archery, drawing, snowboarding, reading and of course, 4-H! I knew I wanted to join 4-H because my brother and sister had so much fun in it. My first year in the beef project was really exciting and a lot of work. I didn’t like having to go to my grandparents every day to tend to Felix, my steer. I knew it was my responsibility so I went. I did really well at the fair. The next year I took the archery project in addition to the beef project and had a lot of fun with that. There weren’t too many kids there, but the ones that came were friendly. I like making new friends. This is my third year raising a market steer and I have gained a sense of belonging in Cedar Pines 4-H Club. I bought my steer from my grandparents who have a ranch in Anderson, California. I also raise my steer on their ranch. It’s a lot of work going there everyday, but I’ve learned to balance my time. It’s been a lot of fun taking care of my steers these past three years. It’s always interesting to see what kind of personality they will have at the beginning of each year. Each of my steers had completely different personalities from each other. This year I named my steer Alexander. Alexander means (defender of mankind). His ear tag number was #72. He was ¾ Back Angus and ¼ Romagnola. Every year it has gotten easier to remember what kinds of grain and hay to give my steer and how much I had to feed him every day. Calculating his weight gain, so I did not to go over 1,400 lbs. can be a challenge. Other than feeding him, I also had to brush and walk him every day even when I didn’t feel like it. From the beginning of this year my steer loved being brushed. I also had to bathe him and blow dry him all the time. I learned from my project leader that brushing helps to train the hair. Alexander always liked getting baths but did not really like getting blow-dried. It was enjoyable getting to walk him all around my grandparent’s ranch. My patience with him really paid off. Alexander likes to play in the dirt sometimes when I take him on walks, which means another bath and more brushing. One of his favorite treats was the leaves from a mulberry tree that he would always lay under. I miss him! The price I paid per pound for my steer this year was $ .90. Alexander weighed 722 pounds on December 15, 2007. Doing the math I paid $649.80. That was the day that I took ownership of him. This year I also learned more about all the different feeds, medications, and tools it took to raise my steer the right way and to make sure that my animal was healthy. The other project I did in 4-H this year was mountain biking. We rode with the Redding Mountain Biking Club. It was a lot of fun riding on all the dirt trails and getting to

go to new places that I have never been before. We learned the safety rules and the names of the three different kinds of bikes and the bike parts. It was so much fun being out on a trail riding around all the turns and hills. Our group also helped Redding Police Department with Bike Safety Day. It was great helping all the little kids. This year for Presentation Day, some of the people in my 4-H group and I did a skit. The skit was called, “Who Wants to Be an All Star?” At Presentation Day, our skit got a gold medal. It took a lot of practice. If we wanted to, we could have gone to Regional but we decided against going because some of us were busy and couldn’t do it. I also entered a main dish in Favorite Foods Day. I found a Chicken Spaghetti recipe online and followed what it said. It was a great dish; and my experience entering it in the contest was fun. It was also fun making a table setting to go with the theme for my meal. It was entertaining getting to see what everyone else made for their food entry. I received a blue ribbon for my dish. I plan to make another food entry for next year. My club also entered a feature booth in the fair. We all had a lot of fun putting our ideas together, planning everything and putting it together at the fair. The feature booth represented our club and projects. I learned teamwork and cooperation. I applied and was selected to be a camp counselor for 4-H summer camp. I’ve already attended two of the meetings required to become one. I am looking forward to going to summer camp and I am a little nervous because it’s my first year attending. Learning and using leadership skills will help me in school also. I’m hoping to be a counselor next year too. In addition to raising an animal and doing mountain biking this year, I was also the Historian of our club. It was a lot of fun being able to take pictures of all the events and put them together into a scrapbook for the club. Next year I am hoping to be our Club President. I’m sure it will be a great experience running for another office next year. I know it’s going to be a lot of fun, whether I get elected or not. I’ve been involved in a lot of community service work with my club and projects this year. One of the things I did this year was to go to national, “Take your Kid Mountain Biking Day.” I helped set up everything and I participated in the event. They also put on a raffle for kids to win bikes. Another community service we did was my biking project. We helped the Redding Mountain Biking Club rebuild the Clikapudi Trail on January 27, 2008. The Clikapudi Trail is on the Jones Valley Lake. I helped by moving rocks to make a rock wall so that no one could go around the obstacle at the beginning of the trail. I also helped at a book passing day on March 3, 2008, for the new Pine County Library. There was a bunch of people who all stood in a line to help pass the books, hand-to-hand, from the old library to the new library. It was also a lot of fun helping the community. I also helped with other community services: GI Packages, Pumpkin Carving at the Senior Care Home, Thanksgiving Baskets, Bell Ringing, and Valentines for Senior Care Home. I’m Anxious to see what the new 4-H year will bring.

What a great day! We went to do a community service (which was fun), and won bikes too. Many thanks to the RMB Club for all they do for the kids in our community.

Cedar River 4-H

Submitted by Kathryn Combs, Club Historian

Saturday, October 7, 2007. The Redding Mountain Biking Club held “The National Take Your Child Mountain Biking Day.” It took place at the Redding Civic Auditorium. The RMB Club had 31 new bicycles donated to them for the kids to win.

The County Wide Mountain Bike Project helped set up the event. Some of the parents also helped with one of the ride stations by making sure that all the riders got water. After the bike ride all the riders had three tickets that they put in boxes in front of the bike they hoped to win. It was exciting waiting to see if your name would be called, I couldn’t believe it, they called my name. Five of the six kids in our club also won bikes. They are Terry Costner, Cindy Costner, Jana Davidson and Hunter Lewis.
