Insulin

Glucagon

[Maximum = 2 marks]

2 marks

Distinction

Award 1 mark each for explaining the roles of:

Insulin is a hormone which plays a number of roles in the body's metabolism. Insulin regulates how the body uses and stores glucose and fat. Many of the body's cells rely on insulin to take glucose from the blood for energy

Glucagon's role in the body is to prevent blood glucose levels dropping too low. To do this, it acts on the liver in several ways: It stimulates the conversion of stored glycogen (stored in the liver) to glucose, which can be released into the bloodstream. This process is called glycogenolysis.

Q11 (a) Describe the three energy systems, the fuels they use and by-products, and explain how the intensity and duration of exercise will determine which system is most predominant during training, giving reference to how the systems engage when a training session commences.

USP126 LO10

Answer Total marks

Pass

Award 1 mark each for:

describing that the creatine phosphate (anaerobic, does not require oxygen) system uses the phosphate to resynthesize adenosine tri-phosphate (ATP) and the by product is creatine.

describing that the glycogen/lactic acid system (anaerobic, does not require oxygen) uses glycogen to resynthesize adenosine tri-phosphate (ATP) and the by product is lactic acid.

the oxygen/aerobic system uses oxygen, glycogen, fats and proteins to resynthesize adenosine tri-phosphate (ATP) and the by products are water and carbon dioxide.

[Maximum = 3 marks]

3 marks

Merit

Award 1 mark each for:

explaining that creatine phosphate is primarily used for very high intensity, short duration activities –up to 10 seconds, e.g. 100 metre sprint

explaining the lactic acid system is primarily used for moderate - high intensity, short duration activities –up to around 90 seconds, e.g. 400 metre sprint

explaining the aerobic system is primarily used for low to moderate intensity of above 90 seconds, e.g. long distance/duration events

[Maximum = 3 marks]

3 marks

Distinction Award 1 mark each for: 4 marks

Page 32: SAMPLE ASSESSMENT MATERIALS (SAMs) · 2019-01-07 · LO1 Answer Total marks Pass Award 1 mark each for naming and locating any three of the following: 1. Skull or cranium - head,

SP3C16.SP3EC1.SP3D26.SP3D27.SP3ED25.EX1.SAM

explaining that at the start of a training session the creatine phosphate will be the immediate system, because it is the quickest to engage. It will be most active for first few seconds, until the limited stores of creatine phosphate run out.

explaining the glycogen system will take over from the CP system and will be predominant until sufficient oxygen is able to be delivered and used.

explaining that if exercise intensity is too high, and oxygen supply insufficient then lactic acid will build up (muscle burn) and exercise intensity will need to decrease to enable oxygen delivery or if intensity increases significantly during a session (e.g. fartlek or interval training) then this system will become more active again, but only for a short duration. It is not a long lasting system due to lactic acid build up.

explaining the oxygen system takes longer to engage because it requires the circulatory and respiratory adaptations to respond to take in and deliver the oxygen required. It is long lasting, provided exercise intensity is low to moderate and oxygen can be supplied.

[Maximum = 4 marks]

Do not award marks for

0 marks if only one or two of the energy systems are described. All systems must be described to receive marks. 0 marks if the systems are described only as aerobic and anaerobic, with no further description.

[Maximum = 3 marks]

3 marks

Distinction

Award 1 mark each for:

analysing that during the lowering phase of the movement the primemovers contract eccentrically – contract and lengthen to yield with the force of gravity

analysing that during the lifting phase of the movement the primemovers contract concentrically – contract and shorten to overcome and move against the force of gravity
