My heart is with Mr Ack Sing Louey, a distinguished leader in the Melbourne Chinese community, who passed away last Sunday at an age of 86. In his legendary life he had been doing his best to look after his country folks and to serve the Chinese community as a whole.

Last year I had an interview with Mr Louey and published his 60-year Australian life experience in our People Feature Section. His leadership star ted early in his young age back in the countryside; on arrival to Melbourne he made his way up first as an worker in the farmland before he star ted his Chinese restaurant business in the Chinatown. He impressed me with his passion in serving his country folks of the Chinese community, he had been taking charge of the Chinese Masonic Society in Melbourne for many years in leading Chinese community bodies. With his heart still with China as his mother country, he went back there after the Cultural Revolution in the early 1970 s with a view to offering overseas Chinese support for the development and modernisation of the Mainland.

Seven years ago he was diagnosed with serious malfunction in his lungs and the doctor once advised that he could only last for two more years. Surprisingly he could live up to this age and his passion and endurance in life had remained uplif t so far. During his last days I had the opportunity to visit him again in knowing more about the history of the Chinese community and his effort through those community bodies in helping out those marginated Chinese migrants during their stressful times. Lately he was still very enthusiastic in asking people to offer their care and contribution to the local community and to China.

From Mr Louey I appreciate the good hear t of the ear ly generation Chinese migrants not just to build their l ives in Australia but to take care of country folks in need. Nowadays we have more and more Chinese coming here from various origins; unlike in the 1970's where mainly Cantonese are found in Chinatown, these days we are having different dialects like Mandarin, Shanghais, Sichusanese etc. Many of them are quite well-off, educated and experienced professionals and businessmen who came here in search of a better future. Despite all the variations, there is one thing in common – we all inherited the same from our Chinese ancestor 5000 years ago.

I hope all Chinese, irrespective of their origins, could tale Mr Louey as our role model in caring about our relationship with all other country folks, in joint effort we offer help to those in need while making our contribution to the Australian community so as to pave way for a better future in the interest of all Chinese who keep coming over to this country.
