Over the past 20 years tens of thousands of immigrants and overseas students have been coming over to Australia from Hong Kong and China. As a nation of migrants, Australia is taking this population seriously as reflected by the attitude of the opposition party towards the Chinee community leading up to this federal election. On better thought it could be figured out that the impact of the Chinese population on Australia is far bigger than any other ethnic group with comparable or even larger size.

Many of the Hong Kong or Chinese immigrant families have professionals in the fields of medicine, law and actuary. Many of their 2nd generation are proficient both in English and Chinese, together with their background of Chinese culture, they are in the best position in serving as middlemen enabling business, communication and exchange between China and Australia. With the boosted China economy over the past 20 years, China has recently become the biggest trading partner of Australia and the role of these immigrants has never been the same as such.

Many Australian enterprises have been keen in opening up the vast China market, but at great cost, as they could easily get lost or hit wall over there. In reality, only a handful number of the big guns can have a dip of the market provided they have solicited support from the local government agents. Yet for the medium and small size entities they are quite helpless, in the absence of any government support, in staying connected with the developing economy in China. This is more obvious in the trading of wines, agricultural produces and other high-end services.

In the past 10 years, due to the federal policy encouraging migrants with enterprise experience to migrate to Australia, some businesses start to realise many Hong Kong and Chinese immigrants, themselves being Australians, are very successful businessmen or professionals with asset, experience and people network; their abi l i t y and ef f iciency cer tainly can enhance the trading and economical relationship between China and Australia. These are the people who know the Australian business system and high quality products very well. So with their already good business network established in China, they can serve as handy bridges for Australian medium and small enterprises in entering the China market.

Last weekend in Adelaide SA I witnessed the formation of the Wine Club by the Hong Kong Australia Business Association with a view not just to marketing in China but also to promoting in local Chinese community. I think this is a very prudent "win-win" strategy in the interest of Australian economy as well as Chinese immigrant settlement.
