September Birthday Celebration

Dear Friends:

This month we are celebrating our “37th” Anniversary of

enhancing, enriching and educating the lives of seniors! We have

two upcoming fundraisers planned to celebrate this milestone. On

Sunday, October 20th we will sponsor the “Fancie Senior Follies on

Broadway” at North Providence High School. This show is directed,

choreographed and costumed by Fran Golombiewski and highlights

the many talents of our members. Please join us and show your

support.

We are privileged to offer “Eddie Edwards Legendary Divas”

on Friday, November 8th at Rhode Island College. This fundraiser

will include the world’s most famous female impersonators and

guarantees to be a sellout! Purchase your tickets early through the

Rhode Island College Box Office (456-8144) or online at

www.smrac.com/divas.

Our sincere thanks to Senator Dominick Ruggerio for

assisting us with obtaining donations for the paving of our new

parking lot. Paving is scheduled to be completed within the next few

weeks.

Remember to invite your family and friends to attend our

Public Flu Shot Clinic on Friday, October 4th. The Center will receive

$1.00 for each vaccine administered.

Warmest Personal Regards,

Karen Testa Leone, Executive Director

Senator Ruggerio presents Karen with a donation

towards the cost of paving our new parking lot.

Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is now taking applications for the 2013/2014 heating season. Income eligible persons may qualify for a grant to help pay their heating bill. (If your heat is included in your rent, you may qualify for a grant to help with your electric bill.) The grant amount for each household is determined by the size of the household and specific income guidelines. The 2013/2014 annual income for a one-person household is $27,392.00 and for a two-person household it is $35,820.00. (Individuals who live in subsidized housing are not eligible for this program.)

If you received a grant from LIHEAP last year, you will receive an application in the mail. New applicants who live in North Providence and meet the income criteria, may call Tri-Town Community Action Agency at 519-1913 to request a form. If you need assistance completing the application, please call our Social Worker, Cheryl Sadler, at 231-0742 x 104 and she will schedule an appointment.

Residents of other communities may contact the RI Division of Elderly Affairs at 462-3000 for the LIHEAP agency in your area.

Withdrawals from SIMPLE IRAs

Generally, you have to pay income tax on any amount you withdraw from your SIMPLE IRA. You may also have to pay an additional tax of 10 percent or 25 percent on the amount you withdraw unless you are at least age 59 1/2 or you qualify for another exception. You have to pay a 10 percent additional tax on the taxable amount you withdraw from your SIMPLE IRA if you are under age 59 1/2 when you withdraw the money unless you qualify for another exception to this tax. The amount of the additional tax you have to pay increases from 10 percent to 25 percent if you make the withdrawal within two years from when you first participated in your employer's SIMPLE IRA plan.

Exceptions to additional taxes

You don’t have to pay additional taxes if you are age 59 1/2 or older when you withdraw the money from your SIMPLE IRA. You also don’t have to pay additional taxes if your withdrawal is NOT more than your: unreimbursed medical expenses that exceed 10 percent of your adjusted gross income (7.5 percent if your spouse is age 65 or older); your cost for your medical insurance while unemployed; your qualified higher education expenses; the amount to buy, build or rebuild a first home; your withdrawal is in the form of an annuity; your withdrawal is a qualified reservist distribution; you are disabled; you are the beneficiary of a deceased SIMPLE IRA owner; or the withdrawal is the result of an IRS levy.
