“If I were to answer all your questions to your complete intellectual satisfaction, would you be willing to accept Christ?”

Page 4: Salvation is free it costs you nothing, but following Jesus will cost you something

“If I were to answer all your questions to your complete intellectual satisfaction, would you be willing to accept Christ?”

The man responded, “Most likely, no.”

Page 5: Salvation is free it costs you nothing, but following Jesus will cost you something

Will He be the Lord of your life?

Page 6: Salvation is free it costs you nothing, but following Jesus will cost you something

What will it cost you to follow Him?

Page 7: Salvation is free it costs you nothing, but following Jesus will cost you something

Luke 5:1–11 On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, 2 and he saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. 3 Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat…...

And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” 5 And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” 6 And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking. 7 They signaled to theirpartners in the other boat to……

come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. 8 But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” 9 For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken, 10 and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon……

And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” 11 And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.

Luke 14:25–33 Now great crowds accompanied him, and he turned and said to them, 26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. 27 Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. 28 For whichof you, desiring to build a tower…...

does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? 29 Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, 30 saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’ 31 Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand……

to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? 32 And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace. 33 So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.

1. What will He ask me to give up?

Page 15: Salvation is free it costs you nothing, but following Jesus will cost you something

God did this wonderful thing for us, but now we better not do anything fun.

Page 16: Salvation is free it costs you nothing, but following Jesus will cost you something

The issue I struggled with - that seemed so big at the time - was did I want what was in my hands OR did I trust what was in God’s pocket?

Page 17: Salvation is free it costs you nothing, but following Jesus will cost you something

2. Will I get anything in return?

Page 18: Salvation is free it costs you nothing, but following Jesus will cost you something

What is He asking you to do? What will it cost you?• A relationship• A business deal• A job• A promotion • That new car• That college• Those friends

Page 19: Salvation is free it costs you nothing, but following Jesus will cost you something

We think it’s a bad deal……

Page 20: Salvation is free it costs you nothing, but following Jesus will cost you something

We think it’s a bad deal……

……What we are giving up is more valuable than what God has planned for us.

Page 21: Salvation is free it costs you nothing, but following Jesus will cost you something

What do we get when we trust Him?• He makes sense of so much in our lives• He gives MEANING to life• He infuses life with PURPOSE• He offers a SOLUTION to the cosmic

loneliness of life• He ENABLES us to become better

persons in life

Page 22: Salvation is free it costs you nothing, but following Jesus will cost you something

The issue is not what He is asking you to give up, the issue is can you trust Him.

Page 23: Salvation is free it costs you nothing, but following Jesus will cost you something

Following Jesus will cost you something, but refusing to follow Jesus will cost you more.

Page 24: Salvation is free it costs you nothing, but following Jesus will cost you something

We have no idea what hangs in the balance of our decision to trust God.

Page 25: Salvation is free it costs you nothing, but following Jesus will cost you something

• To move out of that relationship• To stay in that marriage• To get out of the partnership• To change the way you handle your

weekends• To change what you look at on the

internet• To disengage from those friendships

that influence you• To become more generous

Page 26: Salvation is free it costs you nothing, but following Jesus will cost you something

When we trust Him, we move from living for self to living for Him, and by extension living for others.

Good people will do good things and bad people will do bad things, but for good people to do bad things, that takes religion.

– Steven Weinberg

Page 28: Salvation is free it costs you nothing, but following Jesus will cost you something

For bad people to do good things, that takes religion…. that takes God.

For bad people to do good things, that takes religion…. that takes God.

When you learn to trust Him, when you believe in Him, you will begin doing very good things.
