1.Used only 6 times in New Testament.

2.Difficult concept to understand.

3.It is difficult to translate: primarily 3 different words.

4.The word is rarely used in English .

5.Some people are put off such words.

6.Therefore some think such a study should be relegated only to theological students and not in a sermon.

1.A biblical word: used 6 times

2.Difficult spiritual concepts are to be understood, not ignored.

3.The bible was written for everyone, not theological students.

4.You will be encouraged and enriched by this study and have another reason to praise (brag) about what God has done for you in salvation.

God, have mercy on me, a sinner Lk 18:13

God presented him (Jesus) as a sacrifice of

atonement, through faith in his blood… Rom 3:25

Propitiation Expiation Atonement“I am not concerned to contend for the

word ‘propitiation’. I do not find it an elegant word, nor one which is easily

understood by most people today. By all means let us abandon it if we can find a better way of expressing what it stands for. But if I am not greatly concerned

about the word, I am greatly concerned about the idea that it conveys.

God’s wrath not like human

wrath

God must oppose sin in order to be God

Sin & sinful people must be dealt with so His wrath is satisfied

Propitiation: God’s work for you

“All is now right”

Begins with God; ends with God

“God does not love us because Christ died for us;

Christ died for us because God loves us”.Shows us: the terrible extend to sin and

costliness in dealing with it.

But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law

and the Prophets testify. God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his

blood--to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed

beforehand unpunished--he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as

to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.

Romans 3:21, 25,26

God’s MotivationThis is love: not that we loved

God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for

our sins.1 John 4:10

Our response:Dear friends, since God

so loved us, we also ought to love one

another. 1 John 4:11
