It may seem surprising but the British have fewer holidays than many other countries. Some of them are named Bank Holidays due to the fact that on those days the banks are closed.

In England and Wales theycomprise at present 5 bankholidays:

New Year’s Day Easter Monday spring and late summer holidays

at the end of May and August Boxing Day

They also have 2 common holidays: Good Friday Christmas Day

In Scotland and Northern Ireland they have 6 bank holidays, plus 2 other public holidays.

The particular dates of the bank holidays are fixed annually.

The word Halloween is a Scottish variant of the fuller All-Hallows'-Even ("evening“)

The Halloween holiday is widely thought to have pagan roots,

even though the etymology of the word is Christian.

Because the holiday comes in the wake of the annual apple harvest, candy apples (known as toffee apples outside North America), caramel or taffy apples are common Halloween treats made by rolling whole apples in a sticky sugar syrup, sometimes followed by rolling them in nuts.

Halloween is not celebrated in all countries and regions of the world, and among those that do the traditions and importance of the celebration vary significantly. In Scotland and Ireland, traditional Halloween customs include children dressing up in costume going "guising", holding parties, while other practices in Ireland include lighting bonfires, and having firework displays.
