Dear Parishioners,
By now, you all know that I’m out of town. Every once in a while, a priest gets a
call from a former parishioner somewhere who asks him to come back to the old
parish for one reason or another. Well, that’s what happened and I’m now in the
Diocese of Little Rock, the diocese in which I served before coming here. A
gentlemen who means a great deal to me has asked me to officiate at his wedding.
He was my Head MC and ran my group of altar servers very well.
I left for Arkansas just this past Friday. I celebrated the Friday Mass and satisfied
the intention (as I will have done also on Saturday), led the rehearsal, went to the
rehearsal dinner and then dropped into my hotel bed quite exhausted. The wedding
was Saturday in St. Edward Church, a church I had never seen while I was serving
in Arkansas, and which is supposed to be one of the most beautiful churches in the
Diocese.
On Sunday, I assisted at the Solemn Mass in the new FSSP parish, St. John the
Baptist. I had set things in motion before I left Arkansas, but was unable to see the
fulfillment of that community’s dream, i.e., having their own parish.
Though I try to write as if things are unfolding at that moment, the truth is that I’m
writing this letter well before taking off for Arkansas. I know you can understand
that. Bulletins have to be prepared in advance and there is no magical “real time”
possibility to write about things immediately prior to their happening. Still, I try to
keep the dynamic flowing.
Anyway, going back to a former parish is usually a pleasant and wonderful thing.
Unfortunately, that’s not always the case.
Last week, I got a call from a former parishioner in Indianapolis, which I left in
2013. While at my parish there, I used to make weekly Communion calls on
Fridays. I had my own “route” of people who were shut-ins. Well, one of my
former shut-ins is in a very bad way. The parishioner who called me is her son and
he asked me to conduct the grave-side service when the time comes. Well, the
grave-side service will take place in Pittsburgh, PA!!
One day I’ll have to leave this parish – one way or another. If I’m still walking
around, I hope one of our young people will call me to officiate at his or her
wedding or to baptize his or her new baby. Such wonderful things are what we
priests live for.
A special welcome to Father Balluff, one of the several priests who not only offers
the Extraordinary form now and then, but who also is able to sub on Sundays!!!
How fortunate am I and how fortunate are we that Father has such flexibility.
