AboutSaint John’s Abbey Arboretum
is more than 2,500
acres of lakes, prairie, oak savanna and forest ow
ned by Saint John’s Abbey and surrounding Saint John’s U
niversity.
Saint John’s is advantageously located in the unique area of term
inal moraines (glacial deposits)
that distinguish central Minnesota. O

munities in the area, including oak and
maple-bassw
ood forests, tamarack and m
ixed-hard-w
ood swam
ps and wet m
eadows.
Since 1856 the Benedictine monks w
ho have lived on and w
orked the land at Saint John’s have placed a high value on preserving, sustaining and im
proving it. This long history of environm
ental stew
ardship, an enduring sense of place and the educational m
ission of Saint John’s Abbey and U
niversity inspired the designation of these lands as a natural arboretum
in 1997.
Preservation, sustainability and restoration are principles that guide m
anagement of the Abbey
Arboretum. A strong em
phasis on educational outreach offers the public m
any opportunities to benefit from
environmental and outdoor activities.
