The need for coatings and predictability

All the structures upon the land and sea – slowly turn to Fe2O3!

… Rust is a must - by TB Watson (slightly modified)

The world spends $2.2 trillion per annum combating corrosion!

Page 4: Safinah Presentation Sept 2016

Predictability is the keyAsset owner– If you know how your engineering systems/processes are going to

perform you can predict and control your revenue stream!– If they break down because of corrosion, fouling, cracking,

delamination etc. in an unpredictable manner then you run into problems!

Page 5: Safinah Presentation Sept 2016

Why does paint fail?– Received wisdom

• Poor surface preparation and poor application– But approved inspectors on every job

(circa $80-120,000 p.a.)

Sector - ChemicalUnderstand the end user– Chemists develop– Managers (Engineers use)– Painters paint

Safinah interprets needs of end user and provides insight for product development, formulation, testing and failure analysis

Hi-Tech to….. Low-Tech

Chemical Predictability is the key

Product development– The case for development– The market demand– The value added– The testing dilemma– The routes to market

In service– Guarantee claims– Failure investigation– Product liability

MarineBulk Carrier - Vessel under 1 year old.

Corrosion WBTTwo previous inspections:– One by specialist coating contractor & another by an

inspection company– Both agreed extent of breakdown 1% of total area within

the warranty therefore no claim. Owner contacted Safinah for another inspection.Safinah concluded that:– There would not be any added for the customer of another

inspection – Proposed a review of the documentation to see if there was a

legitimate technical claim

Findings:– Dft varied from 60 um to over 600 um - Poor QC by yard. – Low dfts areas were the source of the breakdown and likely tog

et worse. Client claim was succesfull

Analysis of what is really happening

Owner complained of yellowing of coating

External analysis stated sand on the surface of the paint. (Believable as vessel moored near arid conditions)

However, Safinah’s analysis indicated that the TiO2 particles used in the paint are coated with silica.

External analysis house did not understand coating formulation technology so didn’t understand the results of their own analysis!
