Safe driving is an important habit to instill in new drivers, especially teens. A teenage driver is an inexperienced driver, and this lack of experience can prove dangerous through no fault of the driver's own. A teen driver does not always know to slow down when the roadway becomes wet, or under what conditions it might not be safe to pass. Teens need to learn these skills through supervised and guided exposure to difficult conditions.

Supervised experience is also crucial to the avoidance of night driving accidents.

SAFETY Statistics show that teen drivers are 300 percent more likely to

have a fatal car accident at night, and that close to 16 percent of driving fatalities among 15- to 19-year-olds occur between 9 p.m. and midnight. Experienced adult passengers can help a teen to avoid risk, as can conservative driving curfews that the teen can gradually extend with responsible night use.

A teen driver's lack of experience may also mean that he or she does not fully understand the importance of a seat belt, or why a passenger might be distracting. For this reason, parents may wish to restrict the number of passengers that a teen may carry or implement a house rule that requires seat belts. Parents should also be sure to abide by seat belt laws and all other good driving practices, so that the teen has a responsible role model to follow.
