A graduate of Steubenville High School, Cody Saltsmanwas involved in several school activities, including community service and sports. Cody Saltsman spent much of his time playing football, for which he received a Student Athlete Award.

A contact sport, football requires the practice of safety measures to ensure the well-being of all players. The following are tips to reduce the likelihood of an injury.

1. Wearing proper protective equipment lessens the possibility of bodily harm. This includes wearing mouth guards, shoulder pads, and helmets. Having a professional help with fitting is recommended to ensure secure fit. Other equipment to consider includes padded neck rolls and flak jackets that protect the abdomen and ribcage.

2. Especially during hot months, dehydration can lead to painful cramps. More water should be consumed to replenish the body of fluids loss as a result of perspiration.

3. Prior to playing football, a player should have a pre-season physical examination. A requirement of some leagues, an exam identifies medical issues and assesses physical condition to determine if an athlete is well enough to engage in football.

4. Follow procedures and a coach’s instructions at all times. This decreases unsafe practices, such as grabbing the face mask, hitting a player helmet-to-helmet, and tackling below the knees.

5. A player should thoroughly familiarize themselves with plays and a playbook. This builds confidence, making it simpler to execute each move as recommended. Not only does this improve performance, but it also safeguards players.
