Safety tips for homes with Fireplace

In winters most of us are terrified of the rising heating bills. In order to save, most of us

adjust by using our fireplaces an option for heating. The mantel piece can actually save us a

lot of money during winter months. However a research shows that fireplaces that are not

safe cause several home fires during winter months every year. Nearly one third of

Americans use wood stoves and fireplaces as a heat source. Even while doing this one has

to be aware of the fire risks it brings and safe guard themselves. You can prevent fires.

Clean the fire place

Much before winter is going to begin, start cleaning the fireplace. Take out old wood and ashes that tend to clog the chimney. Clear all the debris and vacuum the remaining dust from the fireplace. Start clearing the mantel piece as well. Look for stuff that are fire hazardous and remove them. There should be no wood, cloth or any other thing that is likely to catch fire near the chimney. These may even be decorative stuff. Do not place your furniture too close to the fireplace. Maintain a distance of 3 feet at the least from the mantel piece. Get the chimney inspected

Find a chimney specialist to inspect the condition of the fire place and the chimney. Start doing this just before the winter is about to begin. If there is some problem with the chimney you will have the time to get it fixed. Preparing the chimney for safety does not start in the 11th hour. You shard start preparing it for use in late fall itself. Certified chimney inspectors are agencies that carry an accreditation from the fire department. They are qualified to check for all possible hazards in and outside the chimney. They will immediately highlight the changes that the chimney requires for a safe winter.

Using the chimney

When you are burning firewood keep all glass doors open. The firewood receives enough air and airing out also prevents the creosote from collecting in the chimney. It ensures complete combustion of the firewood. Keep the mesh of the fireplace closed when the doors are open. This prevents the fire from coming out when there is a strong wind. After the fire is out close all the glass doors. Wind and gushing air can make the flames fly around the house. This is a big fire hazard. Even when there is a mesh door for the fireplace, after the fire is putout smaller speck of flames tend to escape through the mesh door. Using safe fuels All kinds of wood and charcoal need flammable fuels to set them on fire. Ensure that you are using well dried hardwood. Store it in a moisture free place. When using the fire place build small fires by using lesser material. Do not put in items like cardboards and paper to build the fire. Use fire safe fuels like lean gas. Do not use petroleum and kerosene as they can cause the fire to break out into large volume. Finally install fire extinguishers in a handy place on all the levels of your house. The safety of your home is in your hands and ensures that you stay safe indoors.
