CATHOLIC LENTEN REGULATIONS & PRACTICES Abstinence: Catholics over the age of 14 abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent. Fasting: On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 abstain from meat and limit themselves to one full meal each day. Prayer: Lent is a time of increased prayer in one’s life. Traditional practices include Scripture reading, reciting the Stations of the Cross and rising during the night for a prayer vigil. Lent is also an ideal time to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation in preparation for the celebration of Christ’s Passion, Death and Resurrection. Almsgiving: The observance of Christ ’s great sacrifice moves Christians to respond to the needs of their brothers and sisters in a special way during Lent. Many Christians combine almsgiving with fasting, giving to the poor the money they saved by eating, drinking or buying less and relying more on God’s abundant grace.

Thank you to all who responded so generously to the 2016 Catholic Stewardship Appeal last weekend. Each year the success of the campaign depends on you. Once more this year, you have done a wonderful thing; your pledges and gifts have helped to assure that the Catholic Stewardship Appeal will be able to continue its mission of building the faith community throughout the Diocese of Corpus Christi. For those of you who were not here last weekend or for other reasons have not made your pledge to this year’s Catholic Stew-ardship Appeal, please consider a pledge by picking up a brochure/pledge envelope in your pew. You may return the completed form to the Parish Office or mail it directly to the Catholic Stewardship Office. You can also give securely on line or share the CSA video at diocesecc.org. Again, thank you for being a good steward of the gifts God has given you by returning back to him a portion of His gifts.

Sacred Heart School News... The 16th Annual Winter Gala was a huge success due to the great support the school received from our community and parish! Thank you to each of you who attended. We hope you had a great time! It looks like the school will have made more than $35,000.00!! Wow! How wonderful it was to see parish-ioners, parents, and alumni working together to raise money for our children. May God bless each and every one of you for the kindness and generosity you have shown. National Catholic Schools Week wrapped up Friday, February 5th...throughout the week we had visitors, parents, grandparents, and supporters attend our various events. On Monday, our Religion Bowl was made up of 2 teams of students chosen by their religion teachers to represent each grade level K-5th. The result of that competition was that the Spirits won by one point. Congratulations to both teams! Angels Grade Spirits Katie Yarbrough 5th Leonardo Fernandez Eric Mireles 4th Carson Bhakta Christian Janosky 3rd Addison Kopp Lia Garza 2nd Curtis De La Garza Jocelyn Salas 1st Carlos Camargo Mariah Mireles K Addison Poteet

The 1st Runner Up was 3rd Grader, Mark Ploch. Katie now has a chance to compete at the Regional level in Corpus Christi. Congratulations to all!

The Students' Talent Show held on Friday was lots of fun. It was great to see the students perform their various acts and entertain us all! Here at SHS we are truly blessed!
