Fasting: On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 abstain from meat and limit themselves to one full meal each day. Prayer: Lent is a time of increased prayer in ones life. Traditional practices include Scripture reading, reciting the Stations of the Cross and rising during the night for a prayer vigil. Lent is also an ideal time to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation in preparation for the celebration of Christ s Passion, Death and Resurrection. Almsgiving: The observance of Christ s great sacrifice moves Christians to respond to the needs of their brothers and sisters in a special way during Lent. Many Christians combine almsgiving with fasting, giving to the poor the money they saved by eating, drinking or buying less and relying more on Gods abundant grace.

Today we unite as one with Christ as parishioners throughout the Diocese of Corpus Christi to consider their gift to the 2016 Catholic Stewardship Appeal. This is an opportunity for us to be good stewards of God’s gifts as we share with other Catholics our treasure and our blessings and show our love for one another. The 2016 Catholic Stewardship Appeal gives us the opportunity to act together as a family of faith and support the programs and services no single individual or parish can offer by themselves. Your gift is important. Every gift, regardless of size, is vital to the success of the 2016 Catholic Stewardship Appeal. You can also give securely online or share the CSA video at diocesecc.org.

As I mentioned last weekend in my homily, quoting Matthew Kelly, Lay Evangelist, “Don’t give up the chocolate this Lent!” Do something extra that changes not only your life, but the lives of others.

Lent begins this Wednesday. I invite you to deepen your spirituality by receiving daily mediations from Matthew Kelly’s website: www.dynamiccatholic.com.

This is a wonderful time of the year to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist, if you haven’t already been doing so. Please call me should you need to schedule an appointment to discuss returning to the Sacraments. Remember we are called to pray more, give alms and fast. As Matthew Kelly says:

“Be Bold! Be Catholic!”
