Let the Greek times rollDon Denton/News staff

A member of the Horeftikos Omilos Mesologgiou dance troupe leaps in to the air during a performance at the 2013 Greek Fest.

Dancers from the old country will be kicking up a frenzy while the aroma of freshly roasted lamb lures 30,000 people to the 13th annual Greek Fest this weekend at Saanich Commonwealth Place.

While stalwart offerings like Greek cuisine and traditional dance performances remain, organizers are expanding a popular agora, or Greek market, and are opening the stage to dancers from other cultures to increase the visual spectacle.

“We have performers coming all the way from Athens, and they’re quite a spectacular group of people,” said Michael Ikonomou. “They have six different programs they’ll perform, one at lunchtime and one in the evening each day.”

Ikonomou said visiting Greek performers are struck each year by the hospitality and openness of Greater Victoria’s Greek community, many of whom migrated to the area in the 1950s and ’60s.

“There’s been a lot of development and influence of tourism in Greece over those years, but the people here haven’t been exposed to that development. We’re more pure about the Greek culture,” he said.

Expect a popular heritage exhibit that began several years ago to continue to expand as well.

“We have artifacts from all the people who have been here from the early days,” Ikonomou said. “We also hired a student who

collected stories from the many people who immigrated here years ago, and it’s a work in progress. Our aim is to populate it and put it on the web with video.”

Cash raised from food and beverage sales feeds back into next

year’s Greek Fest as well as several charitable causes including Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock and the Hot Lunch Program.

“We also support a number of needy families in Victoria. This year, we had a child that needed an insulin pump,” Ikonomou said.

“There are families who need help, and in the last couple of years, we had a lot of new immigrants from Greece after the financial crisis. There’s a big chunk of money that goes

to those causes.”The Greek community hall also

runs year-round language training and other cultural programs, thanks to funding from Greek Fest.

As always, Greek Fest will celebrate the ideals of family, friendship and philoxenia, or generosity towards strangers, even as record attendance numbers swell the capacity to its limit.

“The number of people is almost overwhelming,” Ikonomou said. “But we want to maintain our friendliness to strangers. That’s always our top priority.”

Greek Fest runs Aug. 22 to 24 and Aug. 29 to Sept. 1 from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. at Saanich Commonwealth Place. See greekfest.ca for more information.

Man jailed for tax evasion

A former Greater Victoria resident has plead guilty to income tax evasion in the Ontario Court of Justice in Ottawa.

Denis Wilson was ordered to serve a conditional sentence of two years less one day, including house arrest and 80 hours of community service.

He was fined $62,676, representing 75 per cent of the taxes evaded.

A CRA investigation determined that from 2006 to 2011, Wilson prepared income tax returns for 14 clients, in which he overstated business losses.

Some of the businesses were non-existent or were, in fact, hobbies of the taxpayers.

This caused his clients to evade federal income tax in the amount of $83,568. Wilson gained his clients’ trust by falsely representing himself as a former CRA employee.

His clients were unaware that he made false claims on their returns.

Games pool previously considered at Broadmead

Back in 1992, the Pagelys and Buncy’s late sisters, Ajeat Hoon and Bindo Lalari, were the first to receive the coveted volunteer pin for 100 hours served.

“We were proud to wear that pin, a lot of hours went into the events and the timing of the events,” Buncy said. “It was a new initiative for the Commonwealth Games to promote multiculturalism.”

There were so many events during the three-year run prior to ‘94 that designated flag bearers weren’t always available.

In those cases, someone from outside the Commonwealth, such as Mexico or Germany, stepped to incorporate as many cultures and nations as possible.

Of course, the Opening Ceremony of the Games stands out as a highlight amongst Buncy’s many great memories, as Centennial Stadium was brimful with 50,000 spectators. But those moments were nearly four years in the making, a movement built by 15,000 volunteers.

Saturday’s 20th anniversary

celebration will also recognize Saanich Commonwealth Place, which stands out as a major physical legacy from the Games.

It’s sure to be a topic of conversation this weekend for two of the people behind its creation, former Saanich Mayor Murray Coell and current Mayor Frank Leonard, a Saanich councillor at the time.

“Coell and I were trying to get a new Saanich recreation pool built in Royal Oak,” Leonard said.

“It was part of my platform when I joined council in 1986. I was actually trying to put the pool near the Broadmead shopping centre and fortunately, it was defeated.”

Politicians at the time knew a 50-metre pool needed to be erected for the Games, and it was down to two other concepts: a revamp of Crystal Gardens in downtown Victoria to reinstate its swimming grandeur from 100 years ago, or an upgrade to a facility at the University of Victoria.

“People wiser than me came up with the idea to combine a leisure pool with a competitive swimming pool,” Leonard said. “(But) it was volunteers who gave the

Blenkinsop Lake Park to expand in land dealDaniel PalmerNews staff

Saanich hopes to expand Blenkinsop Lake Park after purchasing a 13-hectare parcel of land last year.

The park and trail system would connect the Beckwith Park neighbourhood to the Lochside Regional Trail, said Mayor Frank Leonard, follow-ing council’s approval of the plan on Monday.

The proposal also includes adding a portion of the prop-erty to the Agricultural Land Reserve, and was unanimously approved by council.

“We’ve had this proposal on the books at least 30 years,” Leonard said.

“My predecessor flew over top of this property to figure this out. But we never had the right landowner.”

The Mann family sold the parcel to Saanich in 2013 after

the municipality promised to expand the park and build trail connections around ALR prop-erty.

A 1.6-hectare Garry oak ecosystem would also be pro-tected under the proposal, and an area would be designated as protected wildlife and bird reserve.

B.C. government launches new website as strike continues

Tom FletcherNews staff

The B.C. government has launched a new web-site to prepare parents for a possible continuation of the teacher strike after Labour Day.

The website, bcparentinfo.ca, promises the lat-est bargaining updates on B.C.’s teacher dispute, and will act as a portal for parents registering to collect $40 a day for each child under 12 if the strike drags on through September.

It also offers links to online learning resources from school districts, which have proliferated in recent years.

Talks have continued under a media blackout since mediator Vince Ready met the two sides last week.

“Mr. Ready agreed to monitor the situation, and to resume exploratory talks or commence full mediation when he believes it will be produc-tive,” the B.C. Teachers’ Federation and B.C. Pub-lic School Employers’ Association said in a brief statement.

Negotiations broke off and a full-scale strike and lockout ended the school year in June. B.C. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Kelleher met both sides earlier but declined to attempt mediation, after finding too large a gap between the two sides.

Education Minister Peter Fassbender and BCP-SEA chief negotiator Peter Cameron have main-tained that the BCTF’s benefit demands remain far beyond those of other public sector unions that have settled contracts. Also at issue is class size and special needs support, with BCPSEA’s lat-est offer rejected by the union and the latest of a series of court actions scheduled for this fall.

Ready’s last involvement in the long-running series of teacher disputes was as an industrial inquiry commissioner in 2007. At that time he recommended that a senior provincial official be involved in talks along with an independent media-tor.

Help Prevent Heart Attacks with Vitamin C and Lysine Powder

Why is heart attack the num-ber one killer in this coun-

try? Ninety-nine percent of doc-tors say it’s due to atherosclerosis (hardening of arteries) and that cholesterol lowering drugs are the primary way to treat it. But I suggest cardiologists have closed minds and are ignoring facts that could save thousands of North Americans from coronary attack.

Vitamin C is required to manufacture healthy collagen, the glue that holds coronary cells together, just like mor-tar is needed for bricks. Lysine, like steel rods in cement, makes collagen stronger. Two-time Nobel Prize winner, Dr. Linus Pauling reported twenty-five years ago it takes a mere 10 milligrams to prevent scurvy, but several thou-sand to prevent heart attack.

Williams Stehbens, Professor of Anatomy at Wellington University in New Zealand, proved Pauling was right. Stebhens’ research showed that coronary arteries closest to the heart are under the greatest pressure. This causes collagen to fracture resulting in the formation of a blood clot and death.

Dr. Sydney Bush, an English researcher, has now proven that vitamin C can reverse atherosclerosis. Bush took ret-inal photographs, then started his patients on high doses of vitamin C and lysine. One year later additional pictures showed atherosclerosis had regressed in retinal arteries.

Sixteen years ago following my own coronary attack, cardiologists claimed it was sheer madness for me to re-fuse cholesterol-lowering drugs. Instead, I decided to take high doses of vitamin C plus lysine with breakfast and the evening meal.

I knew that Dr. Graveline, a physician and NASA astro-naut, had twice developed transient global amnesia from taking cholesterol lowering drugs (CLD’s). I was also aware that patients have died from CLDs. Others have developed kidney, liver and muscle complications. I also believed the research of Pauling and Stehbens irrefutable. Now, the work of Dr. Bush has convinced me my decision was prudent.

But to take large doses of vitamin C and lysine requires swallowing many pills daily. It’s a tall order for those who dislike swallowing one pill. So for several years I’ve been trying to find a company that would manufacture a com-bination of vitamin C and lysine powder. Now Medi-C Plus™ is available at health food stores and specialty phar-macies.

The dosage for the Medi-C Plus combination is one flat scoop mixed with water or juice with breakfast and the evening meal. Those at greater risk should take one flat scoop three times a day.

This column does not recommend that those taking CLDs should stop them. That is a decision that can only be made by patients and doctors.

As for me – I bet my life on vitamin C and lysine! I turned 90 this year.

No Ryder, no problemTravis PatersonNews staff

Most cyclists partaking in Ryder Hesjedal’s Tour de Victoria on Sunday are com-pletely okay with Hesjedal’s absence.

The pro cyclist is in Spain for the three-week Vuelta a Espana, or Tour of Spain, which runs Aug. 23 to Sept. 14.

It’s a little ironic, though, because this year’s Tour de Victoria, a mass participa-tion ride that’s expanded its route through Saanich, was previously scheduled so Hesjedal could participate.

“People understand Ryder is going to compete in the Vuelta,” said Tour de Victoria director Seamus McGrath, a former pro mountain biker and Olympian.

“This might be a better way to give Ryder a chance to win (than in the Tour de France).”

The West Shore-raised Hesjedal finished an impres-sive ninth overall at the Giro d’Italia in May, having won that event in 2012. He then

skipped the 2014 Tour de France in July to focus on this weekend’s Vuelta start.

When pro cycling teams are scheduling their ros-ters for the summer’s three Grand Tours of France, Italy and Spain, it’s common to have elite riders such as Hesjedal do either the Giro (May) and Vuelta (August), or the Tour de France (July) rather than all three.

For the region’s Grand Tour fans, having Ryder starting in the Vuelta the day before the Tour de Vic-toria is almost more excit-ing.

“With pro cycling, it’s hard to see seven to nine months into the future,” McGrath said. “Hesjedal had such a great ride at the Giro, (Garmin-Sharp) decided to give him a chance to go for it at the Tour de Spain.”

This year’s Tour de Vic-toria is split into three dis-tance groups.

The big ride is 145 kilo-metres. It starts in front of the B.C. legislature build-ing and goes east through

Saanich, View Royal and Colwood, then all the way to Metchosin before looping back through the Highlands.

It then crosses over to Cordova Bay and fol-lows the water south through Saanich and Oak Bay, back to the legislature.

An abbreviated route of 100 km starts in Lang-ford and follows much of the last 100 km of the big route, while an eas-ier 45 km starts at the Camosun College Inter-urban campus, heads north around Elk Lake and also crosses over to Cordova Bay where it connects with the other routes and finishes on Belleville Street.

“The routes are focused heavily on riding in Saanich,” McGrath said. “It’s a favourite area for local cyclists and a treat for people from out of town because of the stunning scenery.”

The Tour de Victoria grew from 1,350 partici-pants in its first year in 2011 to 1,800 cyclists last year.

McGrath said he anticipates another 1,800 this year but won’t know the num-bers until Sunday of as the final count grows in the waning days before the event. [email protected]

“We wanted to make sure the area is protected for farmland as much as we possibly can,” Leonard said. “The ALR’s a great way to do that.”

The plan was mostly supported in letters to council, though some neighbours expressed concern for the well-being of frogs and other wildlife.

The ALR addition was also criticized by some members of the Residents Association of Strawberry Vale, Marigold and Glanford at Monday’s public hearing, as well as on social media.

Association president Charlaine Felker said she personally supports the Panama Flats plan, but some of her colleagues and surrounding neighbours believe the government is meddling too much by transferring the land.

Leonard said it would be hypocritical of council not to use the land for farming when it was purchased three years ago for that purpose.

“I think the (Agricultural) Land Commission is probably tickled pink to get this land proposal, so I think they’ll be turning this around pretty quickly,” he said. “Some of these proposals take two years, but we hope to hear back from them by the end of the year.”

OUR VIEW

Community tsunami

This weekend is a big one for Saanich.More than 5,000 former volunteers and

supporters are expected to pack out PISE Saturday during the 20th anniversary celebration of the XV Games.

The ceremony will include an assortment of Canadian Caring Awards presented by Lieut. Gov. Judith Guichon to some of those volunteers, while the likes of

former Games chair John Walton as well as George Heller, Jim Reed, Mel Cooper and Robert Bettauer swap stories on what it was like to walk Prince Edward through the organized chaos of the day.

The most iconic remnant of the Commonwealth Games, of course, is Saanich Commonwealth Place. The parking lot of the facility will be taken over by 30,000 hungry and happy spectators this weekend for Greek Fest, now in its 13th year.

Greek Fest is another example of the depth of community connection in our municipality, a bond that even visiting Greek dancers remark upon each year as they return to Athens.

Summer’s nearly over (admittedly, the teacher’s strike could alter that perception for kids come September), but the good times are still in full swing in Saanich.

If you have other commitments this weekend, there’s always the final Music in the Park event on Tuesday at Rudd Park. Grab a blanket, a picnic and couple of drinks and head down for the last summer hurrah before the leaves remind us to take pause and reminisce on just how great a summer it’s been.

YOUR VIEW

Re: The perpetual headache of ‘free-cycling,’ (News, Aug. 15)

I moved to Saanich two years ago from Montreal. I thought that the illegal dumping was bad in Montreal, but Victoria is by far much worse.

I was not surprised once I learned how much it costs to dispose of large items in this city.

One thing Montreal did have, which probably curbed a lot of street dumping, was Ecocentres.

These are municipal depots that were designed to reduce the volume of waste sent to the landfill.

They accepted all kinds of material from concrete, wood and other construction materials to mattresses, paint cans, appliances, batteries and furniture.

Anything that was still usable was sent to an area where it was sold as-is. The rest was recycled. Drop-off for residents was free.

There were restrictions as to how much was allowed per household per year, but in all the years I used them, I was never turned away or charged for dumping.

Your driver’s licence was checked and logged on entry. Commercial dumpers were charged, the balance of the service was financed from municipal taxes.

But that doesn’t help anyone without access to a truck or strong backs to move the material.

Twice a year, there was large

garbage pick-up.On the appointed dates, large

garbage left at the end of your driveway would be picked up, free of charge. Any other time, you could schedule a pick-up, for a fee, and the city would send an inspector to assess the cost. If you agreed to the price they would send a truck and haul it away.

Increased costs in municipal taxes to fund an Ecocentre-type scheme certainly won’t be popular with residents, but “free” drop off and a yearly large garbage pick-up would probably curb most of the illegal dumping.

Let’s face it: your broken down furniture, even with a “free” sign on it, is still garbage.

Teacher’s strikea sad affair

Re: BCTF will be pushed to settle, (Our View, Aug. 13)

It’s sad to think your editorial “BCTF will be pushed to settle” might be right. Maybe the B.C. Liberal government “holds almost all the cards” and the teachers will have to fold.

I’m not a teacher and I’ve no school-age children. I think it’s sad that teachers in B.C. can’t be paid on a par with comparable professionals. It’s sad that students in B.C. can’t have the decent

education ordered by B.C. courts. It’s sad that parent are held

hostage to government scheming, $40-per-day bribes notwithstanding.

It is especially sad that the word not mentioned in your editorial, the word hypocritically avoided by B.C. Liberal government, is: Privatize.

This is a long term threat to almost all of us. Teachers might get whipped -- this time. Students might be subject to substandard education -- this time.

Then the campaign will go on until finally public education is destroyed. Assets will be sold for pennies on the dollar in massive privatization; big money will be made; shares in New B.C. Education Inc will soar; schools will be theatres where captive children absorb corporate ads. And there’s more: already public health care is on the block. Public transit? Forget it. This is about building private fortunes for the super-rich (the real power behind B.C. Liberal government).

Your editorial may be right and the teachers will lose. The kids will lose. We’ll all lose, unless maybe we all push back together.

CASUAL HOME IS RENOVATING!!

Double Cowichan swim a feat for MS athleteTravis PatersonNews staff

Two of Greater Victoria’s most ambitious open water swimmers are attempting to swim the length of Cowichan Lake for a second time this weekend.

And this time they’re making it a double.

In July 2013, Susan Simmons and Alex Cape swam the length of Cowichan Lake in a little more than 11 hours.

Now they’re planning two lengths of the lake – 70 km – a feat that will be at least 24 hours non-stop in the water.

They start Friday at 2 p.m. from the south end of the lake and anticipate a Lake Cowichan finish late on Saturday afternoon.

“There is a strict code with open water swimmers,” said Sim-mons. “No wetsuits, is one. But we are allowed to get out of the water for 20 minutes after we swim one length of the lake, if we wish.”

Simmons has captured the hearts of many as she’s dealt with multiple sclerosis for 20 years. Swimming, and a raw food-focused diet are her way of deal-ing with the disease.

Through her accomplish-ments, which include swimming with a relay team across the Geor-gia Strait and as of last month, the English Channel, Simmons

has pulled together not only the Greater Victoria MS community, but people from all walks of life.

“I receive messages of sup-port, messages of personal suc-cess stories that I influenced, and more, through my website,” Sim-mons said.

To prepare for the challenge Simmons and Cape swim with multiple masters clubs around town, including the 50 meter lanes at Crystal Pool and Saanich Commonwealth Place, and have spent the majority of their week-ends for the past few months swimming the open waters of Thetis Lake.

“We’re in Thetis for hours and hours every Saturday and then we do it again on Sunday. We’ve actually found Thetis isn’t big enough for our training pur-poses,” Simmons said.

Should the couple succeed, they’ll need somewhere between 24 to 26 hours to complete the 70 km length.

To make it an even 70 km, they have tacked an extra kilometre into their route, upping it from the 34 km they did last summer.

The time and distance put them into a couple of exclusive open water swimming clubs, the limited 24-hour club, as well as the top 15 per cent of all success-ful open water swim attempts by distance.

The logistics for such a feat are plenty.

Len Martel heads the organiz-ing, which includes dozens of vol-unteers. On the water are safety boats and kayaks, as well as sev-eral additional swimmers who are “jumping in” for two- or five-kilometre stretches, maybe more.

The two expect to reach Heather Campground at the north end of the lake around 3 a.m. Saturday morning.

During the night portion of the swim they’ll wear lights on their back which have been approved by the internationally recognized open water swimming guild.

The cooler overnight tempera-tures are one of the main chal-lenges the two foresee, as well as the mental fight they’ll be waging.

The physical toll begins at 20km, Simmons said.

“A lot of the preparation has been mental, and we’ve been pre-paring ourselves for months, dat-ing right back to the fall.”

[email protected]

Malcolm Chalmers Photography

After nearly 12 hours in the water, Alex Case completes her 34-km swim of Cowichan Lake by walking up the beach and ringing the bell in 2013. Cape and Susan Simmons will swim the length of the lake twice this weekend in a feat expected to last more than 24 hours.

“We are allowed to get out of the water for 20 minutes after we swim one length of the lake, if we wish.”

Safety Tip:With summer plans often including more time on the road, make sure you assess your tires before a road trip. Check them regularly for air pressure, tread

depth, and always replace tires with bulges, cuts, or cracks.

Question of the WeekDo you think crossover and sport utility vehicles will ever completely replace the minivan – or mom’s taxi as it is often dubbed?

DrivewayCanada.ca | Welcome to the driver’s seat Welcome to the driver’s seat

Mom’s taxi now closer to a family limo than a seven-seat vanHow many of today’s NHL stars made those very early morning trips to junior practice in a minivan?Of course, we will never know for sure but you can bet the answer is in the 100s, judging by the tens of thousands of kids, enrolled in hockey, soccer and count-less other activities, who have been transported for the past 30 years in these people movers, pioneered Chrysler.Virtually every auto maker has a version though in recent years, with the ex-plosion of sport utility and crossover vehicles there has been a trend away from the vehicle dubbed ‘mom’s taxi’ in the popular media. At first, that was an affection-ate moniker but of late, it’s come to be a disparaging term for these very efficient family carriers now described as multi-purpose vehicles. No, they’re not leading edge in looks for the most part but surely that’s not why people still buy them in goodly numbers. Minivans are utilitarian but it’s also true to say that today’s iterations are no longer glorified vans with seats. They come close to driving like sedans and the higher end models are a step away

from limo status. The loaded 2014 Grand Caravan SXT version I drove recently certainly could lay claims to be much more than mom’s taxi. Premium cloth seats were inviting and supportive but the rear seating is perhaps the more interesting for those with aforemen-tioned early morning drive duties. The stow’n’go seats are ingenious, turning the Caravan quickly with the flick of a wrist from a seven-seater into . . . . dare I say . . . a van if

desired. Power sliding doors and liftgate complete the convenience package. An area where the Caravan has made giant leaps is right upfront. The one-piece instrument panel is easy on the eye and easy to operate. An optional “super” centre console builds on the functionality, providing a lot of storage.Stepping outside there’s an interesting innovation called the Stow ‘n Place roof rack system, which enables the stowing of the roof bows into the side rails when not in use. There is an obvious cosmetic improvement but that would be a frivolous consideration. The ability

to stow the roof bows a reduction in aerodynamic drag, wind buffeting and thus better overall efficiency.Under the hood is the truly tried and tested Pentastar 3.6-litre V6, matched to a six-speed automatic transmission. This power combination pumps out 283 horsepower but still remains frugal when it comes to fuel economy – 12.2/7.9 L/100 kms.Driving in town with such a large vehicle is not so much of challenge as you might expect. The excellent vision provided by large windows helps when parking in those tight supermarket spots. Stop/go traffic on Highway One was not fun and certainly spoiled the fuel

economy promise. That said, once rolling on the freeway, the Caravan hits its stride and return to sipping gas rather than gulping. The basic Caravan is anything but basic in its equipment tally and starts at $27,995. The tester was loaded to the gunwales with every bell and whistle and came in at $43,580. Take out the basic for the test drive then start adding the features you want until you run up against budget wall.‘Mom’s taxi’ is going to be around for a while yet and that’s good news for sports oriented families and maybe even the National Hockey League.

At home on Serengeti and BC backroadsIan Harwood

The Land Rover LR4 was not what I was expecting, instead it was a pleasant surprised.Looks:I’m used to seeing bulky and cumbersome old Land Rovers on the back roads, spinning out rocks while attempting a hill climb and shaking the occupants to bits! Fast forward to today’s version of the Land Rover and you will find an outstanding front end that is easily recognized with the signature grille and projector style headlights. Also feature are those trend setting side vents on the front fenders, much copied in the aftermarket. And the large rear glass panels that extend up into the roof line make the overall appear-ance very clean looking and unique. Optional 20 inch rims are worth the upcharge. In the cab:My first impression after climbing into the cab was one of disbelief. I did not expect that level of comfort. The sight lines are amazing and the blind spot was almost non-existent. The rear seats had plenty of room for adults and the cargo area was adequate. The heated leather wrapped steering wheel featured all the controls one needed to operate the equipment without distraction. The front and rear seats are heated. Power tilt/slide front sunroof and two sec-tions of glass covering the

roof area over the 2nd and third row seats allow plenty of natural light in. Safety:There are six airbags, including side curtain, side thorax and front passenger with occupant detection system, four-channel all terrain ABS, electronic brake assist and an electronic parking brake. Blind spot monitoring, closing-vehicle sensing and reverse traffic detection systems have also been added.Power:The engine is a 340hp 3.0 litre supercharged V6 coupled with an 8-speed ZF automatic transmission. This transmission features Command Shift and sport mode that actively responds to your driving habits and road conditions by recon-figuring the shift patterns for optimum drivability in all situations and is mated with a single speed transfer case or an optional 2 speed electronically controlled transfer case. Stop-start technology helps to improve the fuel econo-my. Four wheel electronic traction control, hill descent control and four-corner air suspension with terrain response not only make this vehicle manouevre well on the road, but also make it fully capable of tackling the back roads too.Roadworthy:This is the first time I have driven the Land Rover LR4 and visions of driving a boxy SUV through the Serengeti looking at exotic animals came to mind. I

was pleasantly surprised at the comfort level and the drivability of this vehicle.Verdict:This luxurious vehicle has comfort and performance levels that should be expected at this price point. This is a heavy vehicle and fully loaded with passen-gers and gear it is not going to get great fuel economy, but for some reason I don’t think that matters.Sticker price:Price as tested $70,[email protected]

Striving to be at one with your steedAlexandra Straub

Bryan Hourt, Acura’s assistant large project leader of vehicle performance, tells of his upbringing on a ranch in northwest Nebraska, he talks about horse power. He explains that when you connect with the animal, getting on with life’s daily tasks is much easier. If you’re out of sync with your horse, you work twice as hard since you have to think for both yourself and it. In one situation, you enjoy yourself and get more done. The other is exhausting. If you’re in a car that you don’t connect with, everyday routine can be more arduous than it has to be. Its quirks rub you the wrong way. But, if you love your car and know exactly what it’s going to

do in any given situation life on the road is so much better.Enter the 2015 Acura TLX that blends horsepower, with grace and poise. When I slipped inside the cabin of the new TLX, pushed the start button, selected the “D” button and drove off, confidence was apparent from the start. It’s a vehicle designed with performance in mind from the ground up. Its chassis features a newly designed four-wheel independent suspension system to help you enjoy country roads or urban life. It’s tame at slower speeds – and very good table manners – but has the ability to take on higher speed challenges without breaking a sweat.I might have taken a corner or two relatively swiftly, but the steering feel, and its ability to maintain composure in

a turn was impressive. Each model comes with Acura’s Integrat-ed Dynamics System that allows drivers to customize their driving experience through four selectable modes. Depend-ing on the setting, Acura says, “IDS will adjust power-steering effort, throttle response, transmission shift logic, HVAC system operation, and the control logic for either the P-AWS or SH-AWD systems. The new Sport+ mode unlocks the full performance potential of the TLX with the most aggressive settings.”Whether you want that extra bit of gusto, or you are driving around town, the TLX has a mode for you.Three TLX models will be offered. The first comes with a 2.4-litre, i-VTEC inline-4 engine with an eight-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (8DCT) with torque

converter, and Precision All-Wheel Steer (P-AWS). It has an output of 206 horse-power and 182 lb-ft of torque. Then there’s a trim with a 3.5-litre, i-VTEC V6 engine with a nine-speed automatic transmission and P-AWS. That produces 290 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque, and gets 10 more hp and 13 more lb-ft of torque versus the 2014 TL 3.5-litre engine.Lastly, there’s the TLX SH-AWD with next-generation Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive, available only with the 3.5-litre, 290 horsepower V6 and nine-speed automatic. Eventually, both the TSX and TL will be succeeded by the TLX. It makes sense. Dimensionally, the TLX will be positioned between the ILX entry-luxury sedan and the RLX flagship Acura sedan.

There’s room for five, 405L of cargo room around back and places to store personal items.Sure there are sportier offerings in the segment. The new Mercedes-Benz C-Class is one of them. So is the Audi A4. But what works for the TLX is its understated elegance. It’s pleasant to drive, and with a centre stack stripped of unnecessary buttons making it more user friendly. I’d describe my experience in both the 4 and 6 cylinder TLXs to be pleasant. Not the bad pleasant, the kind of adjective you use to describe a mother in-law or awkward coworker. But pleasant in the way that it’s quiet, does the job well and is a pleasure to drive. The 2015 TLX has a starting MSRP for the four-cylinder engine at $34,990.

Put Your Home in Our Hands

Call 250-391-8484 for a free Rental Analysis

Let our experienced property managers take care of all of your home, suite or

condo rentals at affordable rates.

Travis PatersonNews staff

Saanich is a community rich with trees, creating picturesque drives and luscious neighbourhoods to attract new home buyers.

There are groves of Garry oaks and seaside slopes held together by the roots of arbutus outcrops. There’s no doubt tree are one of the most defining features in Saanich’s landscape, but the lovely foliage can sometimes lead to headaches down the road.

Earlier this summer, Saanich implemented its strict tree protection bylaws, which are meant to help retain the municipality’s canopy cover.

The changes came for a few reasons, one being a sobering report by Habitat Acquisition Trust showed Saanich lost 378 hectares of tree cover between 2005 and 2011, the most canopy lost in the Capital Region during that time.

But don’t be deterred. Many a Saanich yard is heavily treed (just one root can open a Pandora’s box of problems for homeowners), and the municipality is used to dealing with queries around tree trimming and removal.

The amended laws extended the protection list to any tree in Saanich with a diameter of 60 centimetres or greater, but the city also streamlined its

permit process.Once they’re designated

protected, trees require permits for removal, replacement and pruning.

But there are valid reasons to have those those trees removed as well.

Having a local arborist visit the potential home and assess the trees and roots is always a good idea before buying.

As well, Saanich can be very helpful in clarifying

the rules about tree replacement.

It’s important to be proactive: catch that Garry oak or Pacific Yew sapling before it reaches two metres in height to avoid an unwanted growth. Even if the tree is on a city property line or threatening essential features, such as a water line or power pole, the cost and time of acquiring a permit for removal can subsequently

be avoided. Keep an eye out for

encroaching roots near manmade structures as well. Root damage is an expensive fix for foundations, pipes, paved patios and driveways.

See the full list of bylaws online at saanich.ca/treebylaw.

[email protected]

DID YOU KNOW?Permits were already

necessary for homeowners wishing to remove or prune any Garry oak, Pacific Dogwood, Arbutus and Pacific Yew.

Those trees are protected once they reach two meters in height or more than four centimetres in diameter.

Additionally, the following foursome of Big Leaf Maple, Grand Fir, Western Red Cedar and Big Leaf Maple are protected once they reach 30 cm in diameter.
