I had the pleasure of attending the opening of

the new synthetic greens at the Bordertown Bowling Club recently. The Club has a real presence in the town and with their new greens will

be a tremendous venue for the entire community all year round.Other than the fantastic facilities, the thing that really stood out at the opening was the amount of volunteer labour that club members had ‘donated’ to the project. The club estimates that members volunteered in excess of 750 hours, and this was a conservative estimate. Without this contribution the club wouldn’t have been able to complete the project and it just shows the community spirit that exists in bowling clubs. Can you imagine if we as a sport had to pay for the hours that are volunteered across the myriad of roles and jobs in bowling clubs from greens keeping, to catering to bar staff? That is why the APIA Volunteer of the Year Award is a great initiative. Although, in most cases, the volunteers aren’t donating their time for external rewards, it is pleasing through the partnership with APIA that Bowls SA can highlight just a few of those that contribute to the success of the sport and the first APIA Volunteer of the Month can be found on Page 6.After the successful launch of the Bowls SA Hall of Fame earlier this year, Bowls Australia will be holding their inaugural Hall of Fame presentation night on 7 December at the Stamford Grand at Glenelg. The inaugural inductees have just been announced and on behalf of Bowls SA I would like to congratulate Errol Bungey OAM, Mary Ormsby OAM and Alf Sandercock on their induction.

This is a well deserved acknowledgment of their achievements in the sport. The night promises to be a fantastic event so why don’t you get a group together from your club and consider attending. More information on the Bowls Australia Hall of Fame is available on Pages 22 and 23.I have also just returned from the Bowls Australia Executive Officer’s Conference and State Consultative Body meeting in Melbourne. These meetings provide an excellent opportunity to engage with Bowls Australia and the other State and Territory Associations to discuss strategy, initiatives and the issues facing the sport. A range of topics were covered including a National Insurance Program and the whole of sport database, integrated website and competition management systems, but one of the most exciting sessions was an update on the proposed Australian Premier League. The Australian Premier League will be an eight team national bowls competition based on a similar model to cricket’s Indian Premier League involving the best players in the sport. The competition will be ground breaking for the sport and it is hoped that it will provide a significant increase in the profile of the sport amongst the community. The current plan is for the competition to be staged for the first time in the second half of next year. More details will be provided once available.

PreSideNt’S meSSAge[ [By now everyone has probably

squeezed back into their bowls uniform after the winter

indulgence and back on the green reveling in the challenges of the new season. In the lead up to the season I enjoyed the hospitality of a number of clubs. It was disappointing to have to decline some invitations due to time restraints and other committments but I thank General Manager Ben Scales and members of the Board who were able to attend on my behalf.Presenting as a side, in Club uniform, is an integral part of team building and it is always disappointing when negative comments are made about conforming to uniform requirements and in particular the Bowls Australia logo policy. The National Merchandising Policy which incorporates the BA Logo policy has been in place for 15 years for the men and 11 years for the women and in this time the revenue generated has been

invaluable in supporting the promotion, development and sustainability of the sport. With the recent development and distribution of the Bowls SA Uniform Infringement Procedure I encourage all Member Clubs and Members to work together to abide by the rules. Having the opportunity to showcase the sport to potential members is always great and it was an excellent opportunity when my local primary school asked me to arrange for lawn bowls to be included in their Inter-school Sports Day.Ninety-four children aged between 6 and 8 years played in groups of 16 with many of the parents getting involved as well. It was a fun day for them...and for me!While it’s great to see younger participants enjoying our sport, 40-59 year olds are an age group that makes up only 26% of our overall membership. Many are ready to transfer from a more active sport or looking to retire from full time work and I encourage clubs to

focus on gaining new members through targeting this age group.Recruiting new members is an issue faced by most States and I’m confident that Bowls SA through its Strategic Plan and Innovations Forums is addressing this in a professional and realistic manner. The decision by the ABC to cease telecasting bowls on Saturday afternoons is very disappointing and I hope that Clubs have circulated the petitions organised by Bowls Australia to members to sign to send a message of support for the show to be reinstated.I look forward to meeting up with many of you at the Asia Pacific Championships at Lockleys and Holdfast Bay Bowling Clubs. Thank you in advance to everyone who has volunteered to help with Asia Pacific and all Bowls SA events during the season - your efforts are greatly appreciated.

Life Membership of Bowls SA was bestowed on Kenn Rogers and Robert ‘Bob’ Thomas at the Bowls SA Annual General Meeting in September. Kenn Rogers’ retirement from involvement at State level completes 25 years of active service to the sport in regional administration and across a broad spectrum of RSABA and Bowls SA roles including management of the Men’s Country Carnival and Men’s Country Round Robin over 10 years, and culminating as Bowls SA Vice President 2009-2011. Bob retired as Treasurer of Bowls SA at the completion of the 2011 Annual General Meeting having had 10 years involvement at Executive level with the RSABA and Bowls SA. However, the period in his capacity as Treasurer was the most important from the point of view of overall management of Bowls SA. Bob and Kenn are worthy recipients of Life Membership of Bowls SA in recognition of their achievements and service to the sport of bowls in South Australia.

Over forty people recently attended the inaugural Bowls SA Forum held at NaracoorteEarlier in the year the Board made the decision to hold a series of forums in regional areas to provide an opportunity for club officials and members to interact with the Board, therefore opening the lines of communication between the Board and officials and members. Ben Scales gave a presentation covering:

• Strategic Plan• Volunteer of the Year Award• E-Newsletter• Star Club Program• Junior Development Squads• Community Development Officers and

National Training Coach Coordinator• Open Gender

Innovations Committee Chair, Harvey Jolly then provided an overview of the terms of reference and plans in place for the Innovations Committee to conduct a series of 14 forums to consult with the membership as part of the process of reviewing the different programs and events that Bowls SA implement, and addressing issues facing the sport.Ultimately it is hoped that these opportunities for interaction will provide the Board with a greater understanding and appreciation of the issues facing Member Clubs, Associations and Regions and also in turn enable the Board to communicate the strategic direction and objectives that Bowls SA are implementing to grow the sport. The Board is confident that the South East Forum was a success and that similar visits to other regional areas will be just as constructive and worthwhile.

In a dominant display, South Australian bowlers claimed all but two medals in the 13th Australian Master Games

which was run and won in mid October.Following the Opening Ceremony at Memorial Drive on Saturday 8 October, Ascot Park and Marion played host to the Men’s & Women’s Pairs event. While the Women’s event was an open aged event, the Men’s Pairs attracted record entries and was split into 35+ and 55+ categories. The only medals to leave the State were the Gold for the Women’s Pairs which went to Jean Paviour-Smith (Lorn Park, NSW) partnered with Penny Hall (East Maitland, NSW). Yorke Peninsula’s Annette Rowntree and Di Milner claimed Silver whilst the Lockley’s pair of Sue Coultas and Di Green suffered a last round defeat but were able to hold onto the Bronze with a superior shots margin.Over at Marion, four greens were full of action. Port Elliott’s Dean Clohessy and Bronte Smallacombe, defending their Men’s 55+ title from the Geelong games in 2009, were undefeated after six rounds and came through to finish with +94 shots, 35 shots clear of Silver medallists, Happy Valley’s Ray Hannaford and Bob Booth. Toorak Burnside’s Dennis Reid and Chris Firth managed a draw in the Final to snatch Bronze. The 35+ event saw Lyndoch’s Paul Uranjek team up with Prospect Broadview’s Colin Dickens to win Gold ahead of Edwardstown’s Peter Thomson and Ascot Park’s John Naylon with five wins. ETSA Port Augusta members Mark Cooper and Mick Fuller topped the list of four game winners to take Bronze by four shots.Play moved to Somerton on Tuesday when 42 pairs competed in the Mixed Pairs event. A 35-9 win in Round One set the tone for Di and Mark Green to see them finish the day with three wins and a remarkable 69

shots up. Eight other teams however were also on three wins and it was clear that big wins were going to be needed to get into medal contention. After the dust settled at the conclusion of day two, five teams were equal on six wins. Whilst the Green’s claimed Gold with an amazing +114 shots, the battle for minor placings was hot. Clearview’s Margaret and Alan Atkinson claimed Silver with +80 while Peta Mattys and Ian Brown finished +72 to take Bronze. Victor Harbor’s Barbara Tiggemann and her brother, Payneham’s Colin Simpson claimed fourth with +70 and Gawler’s Teresa Dean and Bill James managed fifth with +51.Clearview were the hosts for the final event, the Cosmopolitan Triples. After Round One on Thursday, with the sun finally starting to shine, Morphett Vale’s Graham Lawes’ rink sat undefeated on top of the ladder, joined by Tasmania’s Jeanette Lane and John Nichols teamed with WA’s Dennis Shipard. Dark clouds again loomed on Friday and threatened to spoil the final day.The interstate combination of Lane, Nichols and Shipard suffered a loss in Round five, which opened the door for other teams to claim minor placings. The undefeated rink of Isobel Early, Joan Blowes and Graham Lawes claimed Gold as the dominant side, ahead of the Eyre Peninsula combination of Geoff and Vicki Lehmann and Jackie Field. Edwardstown’s Ian Brown and Bordertown’s Peta Mattys teamed with Simon Burke to claim their second medal of the games, taking Bronze. All host clubs are to be congratulated on the way the events were managed over the six days of competition. A big thank you must also go to the volunteers and officials who gave up their time to assist with the event. And finally the players must be congratulated for the manner in which they performed during the 13th Australian Masters Games.

The Asia Pacific Championships are poised for a blistering start in Adelaide at the end

of November, with Australia leaving nothing to chance for the two week campaign. The Australian selection panel have named a star-studded contingent for the prestigious tournament, opting to make only one change from the Australia v South Africa Test Series side last month. Commonwealth Games gold and silver medallist Mark Casey will return to international duties, replacing Broadbeach’s Sean Baker. With its women’s team remaining intact, world number four Kelsey Cottrell will once again lead the charge, with Australian captain Lynsey Armitage, Commonwealth Games gold medallist Karen Murphy,

Natasha Van Eldik and recent debutant Rebecca Quail given the opportunity to perform at a major international competition. In the men’s team, world number three Aron Sherriff spearheads a formidable outfit that includes world number four Brett Wilkie, Commonwealth Games gold medallist Casey, 2009 Asia Pacific Championships gold medallist Mark Berghofer, and 2007 Asia Pacific Championships gold medallist Nathan Rice. Having dominated the 2009 Asia Pacific Championships in Kuala Lumpur, which included two gold, two silver and three bronze from

2011 ASIA PACIFICCHAMPIONSHIPS

eight events, the Australians will be eager to once again perform on the international stage. Despite Australia’s success at the last Asia Pacific Championships, it is a new look men’s line-up, with Berghofer the only player to be retained from the 2009 campaign. The biennial tournament will feature 19 of the nation’s finest teams over 13 action packed days. The 2011 Asia Pacific Championships will be staged at Lockleys Bowling Club and Holdfast Bay Bowls & Croquet Club in Adelaide from Tuesday, November 29 to Sunday, December 11.

Over the next 14 months Adelaide will host the Asia Pacific and World Bowls Championships and the city will be

the subject of world-wide attention. Over September the New Zealand and South African sides have spent time on the greens at Lockleys and Holdfast Bay in the lead up to Asia Pacific and it is worthwhile looking at the greens preparations under way for this event.Brad Porter and Kevin Lewis are well known as greenkeepers with extraordinary talents and between them they have been asked to prepare eight Tift Dwarf greens which will run at around 15 seconds over a nine day period plus finals. Both agree that the timeline of November 29 until December 11 gives them an ‘even-money’ chance of achieving this result, weather permitting, but the challenges they face are huge and differ because of the soil-profile straight beneath the grass. The two greenkeepers get on well and are in constant contact and this two man ‘think tank’ is important as they trade information and compare notes. While the two men work towards a common objective, the two Clubs continue to function as they have for decades. Mid-week bowls, club practice, tournaments and the Metropolitan Pennant competitions continue as wet weather and changing

conditions constantly throw up new challenges. The

ability to adapt on a day to day basis is what makes these men so special. Plans have been underway for 18 months with the application of fertilisers, grooming, shaving, and the instigation of fungicide programs four of the keys and the timing of such applications are critical. Lockleys celebrates its centenary next year and the existing greens were constructed on coastal sand dunes. The drainage is quick by comparison and if the weather is hot over the tenure of the event Porter may well need to water to protect the grass surfaces. He will also need to ensure that his greens are at their peak for the Finals and all of this is dependent on our fickle weather conditions. Lewis’s 80 year old greens at Holdfast Bay should last the nine day tenure of the minor rounds because of the water retention that his heavier soil profile allows. Such retention however promotes moss and algae problems at this time of the year and the surfaces require a significant amount of scarifying and grooming to remove such rubbish before he can even look towards producing the constant playing surfaces required. When preparing the greens at Lockleys for the 1996 World Bowls, Porter was 23 years old and the youngest Head greenkeeper ever to be appointed to the event. If we fast forward to

one AiM two pAthwAysBRAD PORTER AND KEVIN LEWIS

2011 we find a man with immense experience and a great work ethic. With the assistance of Greens Manager Geoff Ellis and a small band of helpers he will do everything he can to achieve his aim. After two years working at Adelaide Oval, under the legendary Les Burdett, Lewis took up the position of greenkeeper at Holdfast Bay and has held that position for the last 23 years. Again he offers an enormous amount of experience and the decision to employ Max Kleinig as a first year greenkeeper apprentice this year will allow him to concentrate more fully on the job ahead. “It all takes time” he commented “and having Max able to cut and roll makes a huge difference in my day to day work”.When one talks to such people you can’t help but be impressed. They are passionate and hardworking and deserve any praise they receive. It is a case of, one aim and two pathways, and we wish them all the best of good fortune for the Asia Pacific Championships. Once the players are on the greens there is little that can be done but if knowledge and strong work ethics have anything to do with it the event and the playing surfaces will be a raging success.

Although it may seem an unlikely analogy, Apia, the leading insurer for Australians

aged over 50 believes that life is like a game of bowls. You can practice and practice and get really good at the game, but a rogue gust of wind, or one small mistake can throw your result off. And so it is with life.

You can’t predict what may be just around the corner, but over the 25 years we have been insuring Australians we have learned that you can take measures to put you in good stead should that gust of wind compromise the things you have worked all your life to accumulate.Which is why it is worrying that research by Apia has found that older Australians seem to be under insuring their homes, by quite a large

amount. Australians’ homes are typically their largest asset, and are often used to fund retirement, so it is a genuinely concerning issue that there seems to be a real risk that many Australians would not be able to rebuild their property to the same standards should the unthinkable occur.

Apia provides the tools to allow you to price the rebuild cost of your property both online and over the phone, but it is important to look at this on an annual basis, particularly in this time of relatively high inflation where the costs of building materials can change relatively quickly.

We realise that for many older Australians there are financial pressures which means they may

feel they need to sacrifice adequate insurance coverage for their home, however, the cost of adjusting the rebuild value of a home is likely to be relatively small, especially compared to the potential cost of rebuilding if it does need to take place.

We at Apia believe that you have gained a lot of experience in life, and you know what is best for your situation. However, if you would like to discuss whether you have an appropriate level of insurance coverage for your home, please feel free to contact us 24/7 on 13 50 50, visit us at www.apia.com.au or come and see us in one of our branches throughout Australia.

Don’t be bowled over by under insurance

After facing many challenges over the last three years the Board of the Wallaroo Community Sports

Centre, the Mayor of Wallaroo Paul Thomas, representatives from the golf and croquet clubs and invited guests and members gathered within the complex for the official opening of the premises on September 30, 2011. The Centre which includes offices for all three sports along with a restaurant quality kitchen, impressive new bar facilities, a 200 seat lounge area and two six rink indoor carpet bowling greens is impressive and sits as a monument to hard work by professionals and members alike. Although not complete, the centre will also include a 10 rink outside green. Members and visitors spent two hours bowling on indoor greens running at 16.5 seconds beneath an amazing single span roof before retiring for afternoon tea and drinks. It was a day that will be remembered for a long time by those involved from the initial concept to near completion and will service the townships sporting needs well into the future.

During the lunch break Greg, Kevin and Nigel spoke to the group on greens issues and Luke Clohesy from Globe and Glenys Killian from Gold Acre also gave some important advice on their equipment. Jeff Willoughby from Eudunda demonstrated the advantages of a galvanised sprinkler base that is being produced locally. It was an excellent day and many thanks are extended to Murray Gerschwitz OAM, who assisted with setting up the day, President Irene Greig and members of the Ardrossan Bowling Club, Globe Australia, Gold Acre, greenkeepers Greg Daulby, Nigel Ryan, Russell Edmunds, Brad Porter and Kevin Lewis, sponsor David Rogers and the many who attended on the day.Due to the excellent response Bowls SA plans to conduct Field Days every year in different locations.

A Field Day conducted at the Ardrossan Bowling Club in September provided an opportunity

for greenkeepers and administrators to learn about the latest machinery and the most up to date techniques to assist them in the maintenance of their greens. Some 105 attended from 45 Clubs and what was even more of an indicator of the need for these types of days was that many people travelled considerable distances to attend.Globe Australia and Gold Acre showed their machinery and equipment, and five Greenkeepers Greg Daulby, Russell Edmunds, Brad Porter, Nigel Ryan and Kevin Lewis representing the South Australian Greenkeepers Association, assisted and provided technical advice and support.Areas covered included:• Renovation & Preparation of Greens• Nutrition & Disease Management• Irrigation & Spraying Methods• OH&S & Machinery Maintenance

At the Annual General Meeting of the Association held at the Clarence Gardens Bowling Club,

members approved a recommendation to increase the numbers on the State Executive. This enabled a number of new faces on the Executive, which can only be of benefit to the Association overall. Winston Ellis continues as President, with Mike Powell as his deputy, Don Priestly as Secretary and Stan Bolto as Treasurer. Shirley McIntyre of Walkerville retired from active service. Shirley was heavily involved in the now defunct Ladies Past Presidents Association, and carried on as a member of the State Executive, following amalgamation. At the meeting, Life Membership was bestowed on Rex Wilson. Rex has been a member for 15 years, and has spent most of those years on both State and Metropolitan Branch Committees, in a number of official positions such as Secretary/Treasurer and Membership

Officer, and has been involved in several Australian and State Bowls Past Presidents Friendship Carnivals.Congratulations Rex and thank you.Christmas Lunch will be held at Clarence Gardens on Sunday 4 December. It was a great occasion last year when a record number of 130 attended. Non-members are welcome, and members are urged to bring friends along; a bright and happy afternoon is assured.

A new club name has emerged after two of the smaller clubs in the Adelaide western suburbs, the

Underdale and Adelaide Airport Bowling Clubs, amalgamated on 15 May 2011 to form a new entity; the Underdale Airport

Bowling Club.

Underdale The name Norman was synonymous with

the early history of the Underdale Bowling

Club which can be traced back to the privately owned wine company of Norman Wines that began in 1853. Jesse Norman, having been a brewer in England, migrated to Australia in 1851 and realising the potential

of the rich soil around the Thebarton area planted vines. Following his death in 1881, three of

his sons continued the business until 1904 when the youngest son Arthur independently acquired the business. Arthur and his wife Annie had four sons and in 1921

land was purchased at Holbrooks Road where A Norman & Sons winery was situated. Their son Herbert, better known as ‘Top’ Norman, was a keen bowler and at a meeting held on 9 January 1935 the Underdale Bowling Club was formed. Three rinks were laid and subscriptions were set at one guinea ($2.10). The Clubhouse and land was leased from A Norman & Sons for five pounds ($10) per year. Electric lights were installed in November 1936 and in 1938 the Club had 12 rinks and membership had grown to 73 men. Arthur Norman who was Club Patron from the Club’s inception passed away in 1950 and by 1954 ‘Top’ Norman continued the family business with his two sons. H H (Top) Norman was President of the Club for 10 years and was certainly better than an average bowler having been Club Singles Champion for two years, Pairs Champion for three years and appropriately was the Clubs first Life Member. He passed away in 1970 aged 79 and a plaque affixed to the clubrooms identifying the H H Norman Green was officially unveiled by his son Len H Norman on 4 November 1984. A bowling outing by 12 ladies to the Stirling bowling greens in 1936 was the impetus for the formation of the Underdale Women’s Bowling Club and on 7 July 1937 the Club was formed and again the Norman name was prominent with H H Norman’s wife, Lil, President for the first nine years. At the end of the 1951/52 season the club had 116 male and 55 female members. They were the good old days! The legacy of the Norman family is still evident. Even now there is an abundance of sweet smelling grapes temptingly

overhanging the magnificent display of hydrangeas, where visiting players often make complimentary remarks on both. The Kruger name also figures prominently in the history of the Club with Lois and Rex having been involved for almost 60 years and as well as holding key positions for many years, their names appear regularly in the list of Club Champions and of course both are Life Members. Lois and Rex were awarded the ultimate honour in 2003 when A green was renamed Kruger Green. Another club stalwart is Norm Lockwood who has the unique honour of being a Life Member of both Thebarton and Underdale and has been involved in the sport for almost 60 years. He is still going strong and is the current greens manager.

Adelaide AirportIn 1960 the Civil Aviation Institute resolved to form a lawn bowling club, a green was constructed and in 1962/63 the Civil Aviation Institute Bowling Club participated in pennants for the first time.A quick dash to the Institute building was required to obtain refreshments; the first facility being a canvas canopy off a one tonne utility, followed by a condemned plumber’s shed that was superseded by the brick building. Initially membership was restricted to members of the Civil Aviation Institute, although people who were not employees of the Department of Civil Aviation could be admitted as Associate members. Club membership was flourishing in the late 1970s and in 1978 active membership was limited to 110 and any application held in abeyance until a vacancy occurred. A meeting of 11 ladies on 7 December 1971 decided to form a women’s side for the 1972/73 season and in 1981/82 the

Club had 79 female members. Again they were the good old days! The Club underwent several minor name changes during its existence but from 1985 the name was changed to Adelaide Airport. With further development at the airport beginning in 2004 and the non-renewal of the lease in 2007, the future of Adelaide Airport Bowling Club was very much in jeopardy. Relocation was initially mooted as part of a sporting complex on land at West Beach used by Adelaide University, but this area is still vacant. An expression of interest in becoming part of a new Adelaide Shores sporting complex also stalled and forced to vacate their home, the club relocated to Underdale which has been their home base for the past three seasons. Although an extremely amicable relationship built up between the two clubs, Adelaide Airport could not attract new members due to the ongoing relocation saga and after seven frustrating years, members had to decide whether to amalgamate or disband. Desiring to keep the loyal group of members together it was decided that both would benefit on and off the greens with an amalgamation.Actually there is also another former club involved in the entity. When Thebarton were struggling to field just one side in the mid 1990’s Thebarton joined Underdale in 1996/97. A little known fact is that the Thebarton Club was originally formed as West Park and played at what is probably best known as Railways Oval with the name changed to Thebarton in 1951/52 upon relocating to the facilities now occupied by Hindmarsh.

Vin Beard was one of the earliest pioneers in forming Adelaide Airport and was President for three years and Secretary for 13 and it was his groundwork that got the Club up and running. Eric Bolton was President for two years and Secretary for nine and in 2000 was awarded the Australian Sports Medal for Outstanding Service to the Sport of Lawn Bowls. Olive White was a major contributor to the women’s side, being President for two years and a very efficient Secretary for 11 years.

With former Adelaide Airport President Darryl Stephens in charge, the Board is not lacking in experience with three former presidents still involved and Secretary Ken Smith now in his 19th year in the position. The colours of the Club are maroon (for Underdale), gold (for Thebarton) and blue (for Adelaide Airport) and the clubs motif is the ‘Jets’. From the enthusiasm that has been seen since the amalgamation, undoubtedly the ‘Jets’ are well on the way to flying upwards and onwards in the 2011/12 season and beyond.

Bowls Australia have recentlyannounced the star-studded list of

inductees into its inaugural Hall of Fame. The BCiB Hall of Fame aims to commemorate the sport’s most deserving figures for their achievements both on and off the green, with induction representing the highest level of peer recognition for an individual’s performance or contribution to the sport.Hall of Fame membership has been divided into two categories, with 29 athletes and nine general members awarded induction.Athlete members are those who have competed at international competition level for Australia, while general members are selected for excellence and outstanding achievement in roles supportive to the sport of bowls

including administration, coaching and officiating, media and history, sports science and technology. Three South Australian individuals have been included in the illustrious group as athlete members.Bowls Australia would like to congratulate Errol Bungey OAM, Mary Ormsby OAM and Alf Sandercock. On the greens Errol represented SA on 130 occasions and chalked up 68 appearances for Australia between 1972 and 1979, with an international highlight at the 1974 Commonwealth Games in Christchurch where he picked up a silver medal alongside Errol Stewart, Keith Poole and Robert King. Errol was awarded the Order of Australia Medal in 1986 for services to the sport of Lawn Bowls.Mary is a well loved icon in SA, and at the time of her achievements, was the only player, male or female, to have

won all three Australian titles; the Australian singles, pairs and fours. Mary was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 1985.Alf’s lawn bowls career spanned a four decade period in which he represented Australia on 73 occasions and SA 198 times, earning success on the international stage with gold medals atthe 1980 World Bowls Championship and the 1980 Hong Kong Invitation where he teamed with New South Wales' Peter Ruben. All three individuals were inducted in to the Bowls SA Hall of Fame earlier this year.Former champion Glyn Bosisto, who wasinducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 1985, will be bestowed as the sport’s first ‘legend’ on the night.Bosisto, who is one of bowls preeminentplayers, represented Australia, New South Wales and Victoria 256 times and created so many records that he was dubbed the (Sir Donald) `Bradman of bowls’ by his peers. The induction ceremony will take place on Wednesday, December 7 at the Stamford Grand in Adelaide. Tickets are available for purchase at www.bowlsaustralia.com.au or phone 03 9480 7100. internAtionAl CAMps

Bowls NZ recently held a camp in Adelaide at the Lockleys and Holdfast Bay Bowling Clubs in preparation for the upcoming Asia Pacific Championships. The camp proved to be a great success with the Kiwis gaining valuable experience on the greens of the Asia Pacific host clubs, as well as providing an invaluable opportunity for our men and women State players to gain significant experience against players of international standard. Both host clubs were very accommodating and our officials worked with the program and provided excellent support. Our State Selectors and Coaches were present for all days and were able to gain some valuable knowledge on each player’s performance and form.Following on from the New Zealanders, Bowls Australia also held a training camp. Again our players, coaches, selectors and officials were all committed to the camp and again we gained much from the experience. I would note players were especially

appreciative of the opportunity and I acknowledge the time dedicated by them to their sport.

100 stAte GAMes

While a long standing Royal SA Bowling Association policy of recognising the achievements of State players when they had played 100, 200, 300 or 400 senior State games has been maintained by Bowls SA, the achievements of SA Women’s Bowling Association State representative players were never recognised by the Association and no records were maintained by SAWBA. A recommendation that all senior State representation players, male and female, be similarly acknowledged was approved by the Bowls SA Board with the 2001/02 season established as the commencement date for recording the State Games played by women to align with the incorporation of Bowls SA. President Ivy Kluske had the pleasure of presenting the first women recipients, Holdfast Bay members Riina Bradbrook

and Sandra Wallace, with their retrospective 100 State game badges and certificates recently.Congratulations Riina and Sandra on such a wonderful achievement.

under 18 ChAMpionships

During October South Australia’s Under 18 boys and girls State teams competed in the Under 18 National Championships at Darebin Bowling Club, Melbourne. All States and ACT competed including a second Victorian team that replaced the Northern Territory contenders who withdrew. The competition was split into two draws with Bowls SA competing against Victoria, Victoria A and Queensland. South Australia came away with a Silver Medal in the Boy’s Triples, a Bronze Medal in the Boy’s Fours when Ben Johnson combined with Ben Bowman, Jonathan Voigt and Brandon Whiley; Ben Johnson and Brandon Whiley finished 5th in the Pairs and Luke Brind finished 6th in the Singles. The girls also performed well with Bronze in the Pairs, but found it hard going in the Triples and Fours to finish 6th in both.Coaches Faye Luke and Leon Crane continued their great work in developing our talented juniors which translated into a very respectable fourth overall against the larger and very imposing Eastern States.

Luke Brind is a country boy from Curramulka whose stellar rise through bowls is exceptional.

Luke was one of the original members of the Yorke Peninsula All Stars Henselite Junior Development Squad and was quickly identified as having the capacity to become a talented bowler.Soon to be 16, Luke has already won a raft of Singles, Pairs and Handicap

Championships titles at his Club and went on to

become the Regional Pairs winner for 2010/11.Earlier this year he was selected in the U/18 Squad

and after strong performances in

the trials he was selected as

a member of the U18 Team to compete at the U18 National

Championships at Darebin International Sports Complex. Luke skippered fellow debutant bowlers Ben Bowman and Jonathan Voigt (below) in the Boy’s Triples to win Silver and his performance didn’t go unnoticed when, at the completion of the Championships, Bowls Australia named him, along with Balaklava star Renee McPharlin, in the U18 Australian Squad. The Squad comprises eight boys and eight girls and from this squad players will be selected to compete in next year’s U18 Trans-Tasman Test Series. This clearly shows that the Henselite Junior Development Squads are providing a strong pathway for our next generation of athletes and Luke will provide inspiration to all aspiring junior bowlers.

peter BAllArd on the roAd to suCCessDuring the last few months over 40 coaches have undertaken the Club Coaching course. This is very encouraging and will provide many Clubs with the additional asset of having a Club Coach.Port Adelaide member Peter Ballard had the ambition to become a Coach to gain the knowledge and skills to be able to assist new members and potential juniors. Despite his enthusiasm, when Peter received the paperwork he felt he would have to withdraw due to a learning difficulty. However, with some extra tuition to visually and verbally explain the questions he was able to develop skills sessions and be actively involved in the course to successfully complete all requirements to become an accredited coach. This clearly shows that with determination and commitment goals can be achieved. Well done Peter.

Country visit In early September over seven days I did a trip through Port Broughton, Port Augusta and Cowell and overall 13 coaches were accredited and 80 Port Augusta school children attended bowls clinics.Port Broughton was a great success with the new programs training school teachers to run bowls clinics and invent new games for all to be involved in. The coaches gained new knowledge and skills and definitely showed great enthusiasm throughout the course.Cowell Bowling Club started off very well, but I nearly had a heart attack when I spotted two snakes on the green.

However, I settled down when told that they are ‘fake’ to keep the galahs off the green. Over the next two days many coaches undertook training in new concepts and skills, making it a very successful visit.

Junior developMent Over the past year, over 100 juniors from across the State have been training hard in the Junior Development Squads. After months of preparation Henselite and Bowls SA have introduced a ‘Regional JDS Competition’ and ‘Inter-Squad Competition’. The aim of these is to provide juniors with skills development and game play in a fun, but competitive format. Once the juniors have completed their Regional Rounds, they will be invited to a State Regional competition where they will play other squads from around the State. The benefits of the JDS program have been shown with Yorke Peninsula All Star’s member Luke Brind recently selected for the Bowls Australia Junior Squad. This confirms that the squad provides a viable pathway for young bowlers to progress to Club, State and national level. A Junior Camp Day is being organised and will be conducted in November. This exciting initiative will be a great opportunity for all juniors to be involved in skills development, team building activities and interacting with special guests.

Junior twiliGht On Sunday 9 October 20 juniors from as far away as Bute got together on the Underdale Airport green to play pairs in

the monthly Junior Twilight Day.In a show of their developing skills the day’s runners-up were Lynsey Trenorden and new member Bailey Rafferty, who has just joined Elizabeth. Coming home to win Gold were Eastern Jett’s member James Reardon and Bute star Joshua Lang. Both teams won all three games and it came down to a count back to determine the winner.Special thanks must go to Bowls SA Junior Committee Members Stephanie Simms and Pauline Royal who coached two potential Junior Development Squad members. Thanks to the Underdale Airport helpers for providing lunch and their facilities, to the greenkeeper for preparing the greens and a special thank you to the parents for bringing their potential stars to the event.

CoAChinG CoursesIn the next three weeks two Introductory Coaching Courses will be conducted, with 11 school teachers attending.Bowls Australia is currently collating feedback on the Bowls Australia Advanced Coaching Course which will be considered before the course will be finalised and ready for implementation.Coaching courses for 2012 will be advertised later in the year, however if your club has eight or more people wanting to attend a course, please contact Bowls SA.

For more information on Junior Development and Coaching Courses please contact Development Officer Kelli Wray on 8234 7544.

reGion 1South East NewsAt last the Penola Bowling Club’s new clubhouse is underway. With the framework up they hope to be using it well before the season finishes.Mt Gambier RSL has installed a third synthetic green, Lucindale one, and Bordertown have two new Tiger Turf greens which were opened on 15 October. The South East Women’s Association recently celebrated their 50th anniversary at Naracoorte with 80 guests in attendance.Bowls SA President Ivy Kluske and Councillor Beverlee Scown presented plaques to 2010-11 winners and then after lunch (and cake) and despite the inclement weather everyone briefly adjourned to the green for the official opening of the 2011-12 season. Anniversary proceedings continued indoors with a brief report of the history of the Association over the last 50 years and President Ivy presented the Association with a framed certificate to mark the occasion.

reGion 2It Pays to Apply for GrantsMembers of the Minlaton Bowling Club were delighted when they successfully applied for a $2,000 grant, through the Viterra Group of companies, which meant it was possible to purchase six sets of small size bowls for the juniors from the Minlaton District School to use when they come to the Club for coaching. After an approach from Secretary Lorraine Decelis, Caddy Shack Bowlscentre offered some sponsorship, which then took the tally to eight sets.Jake Rademacher from Viterra made the presentation to Club President Tom Martin and the students in attendance. As well as this windfall the Club also applied

5

4for and received a grant from the Yorke Peninsula Council which allowed them to erect synthetic shades across the front of the Clubhouse and Allan Rushbrook, representing the Council, was on hand to view the finished product. So the moral of the story is if you don’t apply for a grant you won’t get it but you could come out on the right side if you do apply.Well done Minlaton!

Her bowling achievements may never been equalled at Kirton so it was a special occasion for members and friends when Councillor Anne Swaffer presented Jean with a Bowls SA 90 Years of Age Certificate recently.Jean is still a very able bowler and as acknowledgement of her many years of dedication to the Club women’s Secretary Jeanette Wiseman read a citation of Jean’s involvement and achievements. Not only has she been a very dedicated and gracious bowler having won numerous Club competitions and prestigious events but she has also held most administrative roles within the Club and SEPWBA Association. In 1996 she was inducted as a Life Member of Kirton.Congratulations Jean, on your exceptional achievements on and off the green.

Ceduna Oysterfest Classic 2011 A field of 104 bowlers took to the Ceduna greens for the 2011 Ceduna Oysterfest Classic, held in conjunction with the Ceduna Oysterfest over the October long weekend. While showers had dampened the greens it didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the bowlers having travelled from Port Hedland, Adelaide, Bordertown, Moonta, Port Lincoln, Lock, Cleve, Port Victoria, Cowell, Streaky Bay, Tumby Bay, Morphett Vale and Minnipa to take part in this prestigious annual event. After two days of highly competitive bowling a team from Port Lincoln with one Ceduna player, skippered by Allan Stagg, took out the major prize for the second time in three years. A team from Port Lincoln skippered by Larry Vallance was Runner-up. Josh Noble and his team from Lock and Cleve filled third place. This year the winners of each of the Saturday and Sunday competitions, not featuring in the major places, were presented with winning envelopes. Saturday’s winning team was from Ceduna with Denys Richter as skipper and Sunday’s winner was Andrew McDonald’s team from Kirton Point. The organisers and caterers are to be congratulated on a carnival that continues to get better with each year.

improving their style.Members are enthusiastic and the Club is optimistic that their players have a bright future on the green. Re-alignmentRegion 9 has welcomed the Prospect-Broadview and Walkerville Clubs after they were re-aligned, as of this season, from Region 10 to Region 9.

reGion 10Trinity GardensOn Saturday September 10, Trinity Gardens Bowling Club celebrated its 75th Birthday with a combined Anniversary and Opening Day. This year the Club pulled out all stops to ensure that this very special day would be a memorable one. Club President Jon Steele welcomed Bowls SA Vice President Carol Boyle, City of Norwood, Payneham and St. Peters Councillor Sophia MacRae, and past and current members and their guests to the large gathering. A 75th Anniversary Certificate was presented to commemorate the milestone and the refurbished “B” green was formally declared open. Andy Brown, the Club’s 94-year-old Patron, put down the first jack and Club Champion, Alan Baker, together with long-serving member Mary Tugwell, bowled the first bowls of the season. [cOAchiNg cOrNer [Have you ever been to training

and can’t concentrate? Ever get bored rolling to a jack? Why not

bring some new elements to training to develop new ways on concentrating for longer periods of time.Concentration and memory work together but one does not lead to the other. To concentrate is seen as directing your mental powers towards a particular activity, situation or problem. Memory is the ability to remember information, experiences and people. Bowls is seen as a mental sport, which involves concentration throughout the match. In a game of bowls we only concentrate for approximately two minutes and 27 seconds. This is the time for mat routine and delivery. However, if we do a bad bowl we may say ‘I wasn’t concentrating’. However, in a three hour game we do not need to concentrate for a long period yet we use this as an excuse. As a coach we need to be able to base activities around this concept to be able to provide players with the skills and knowledge to be able to improve this element. As humans we struggle with concentrating for long or short periods of time with boring subjects such as cleaning or washing. However, if for instance we love playing a video game we can concentrate really hard to get to the next level. This concept is the same for bowls in many ways. If a Coach makes an elite bowler draw to a jack 30 times, after the first few ends their concentration level is likely to drop significantly as the challenge diminishes and boredom sets in. As a coach it is essential that you know the playing level of your group or individual before setting up activities.Drills can be formed by using jacks, bowls, ‘flap jacks’ and other items and, to brighten up training sessions, coaches can use tennis balls, hoops, cones and much more. While conducting these activities players develop different skills without even realising. By using cones to symbolise a Bowl if a player’s bowl hits the cone it will deflect the bowl in the opposition direction. Using colour also makes the exercise more appealing and helps to identify the opponent’s bowls.

After the “lAst end”

The question about what happens to you after you die is not necessarily a legal one, but

it does have ever increasing legal relevance particularly for those who remain. Everyone would have heard lately of the baby boomer generation and their imminent retirement and, despite the GFC and other fiscal calamities in recent years, they will be the wealthiest generation in the history of civilisation (apparently). I am not too sure how accurate all of those reports are but what is evident in this State is the ever increasing number of inheritance dispute claims. In any estate which includes a house, the value in this day and age is likely to be a six figure sum and when you allow for human nature, you have a recipe for inheritance disputes and claims.I have often been asked when drafting a Will whether I can guarantee that the wishes of the Willmaker will prevail. It is an unfortunate fact of life that you can have the best Will drafting lawyer in the country but there is no such Will which can protect your estate against a claim by an aggrieved person. It does not necessarily have to be a blood relative, although commonly it will be. Because there is an asset pool of some significance and because people are living longer and accumulating more wealth, there are going to be more issues to consider in this very vital area of practice.Parliament and therefore the

community, has enacted several pieces of legislation to clarify and give rights to people in this situation. There is a certain inequity and unfairness where close relatives such as a wife and children miss out on the benefits from an estate, particularly where those parties had been dependent upon the income of the deceased. The community wants to see that no one is disadvantaged where that occurs. There are all sorts of issues that arise in this situation. There are issues about the capacity of those who sign the Will. There are issues of whether they have been unduly influenced in the making of a Will. The estrangement of a potential beneficiary, (if considered objectively) left out of the Will is another. There is the harbouring of life long grudges and there is the ever present potential for pettiness when the Will drafting process occurs. Some drafting styles mention the reasons why someone misses out on a gift or a benefit. It may well be that they think they have been given enough in their lifetime or it may well be for other reasons such as that the parties had nothing to do with each other for decades, despite close family ties. Scandalous remarks in a Will can be struck out by the Registrar of Probates when a Will is submitted for Probate. When advising on these issues, the other attitude that is apparent is that people want to be able to leave their assets to whom they wish. On the face of it, it is a perfectly appropriate natural human desire. The laws that exist try to give balance to that desire against the community’s concern with fairness and reasonable expectations of a benefit. There are time limits applicable for challenging estates and the date of death is the trigger for a concern of this nature. When it occurs if someone is concerned then they should, as soon as possible, obtain advice as to what, if any, entitlement they may have. The legal costs of inheritance claims or disputes are usually borne by the estate if the matter resolves by agreement. There is a very real incentive to have matters dealt with in this fashion; even to concede a little on

occasions where there is a potential claim, to avoid a significant portion of the estate being eaten up in legal fees.If you go to court and lose, you will in many cases be responsible for the legal fees that are generated both for the winner and your own. Although, it is also the case that the estate can be liable for all the costs incurred. There are occasionally issues too as to the adequacy of any gift that is left. Quite often it is possible for the law to find that a reasonable expectation has not been met by a very small or minor gift pursuant to the Will. However, the argument can still be put that you have not provided appropriately and there is a need, as a matter of law, that Willmakers must act “wisely and justly, not fondly or foolishly.”There was a time before the passing of the Inheritance (Family Provision) Act where your Will would govern what happens to your property after death apart from circumstances that were not all that common. Today a Will can be set aside or amended as perhaps you would expect from an evolving community attitude advancing towards a more civilised outlook. The Law can and will interfere to correct and modify the terms of a Will to ensure that justice is a possibility in those cases where as a result of aspects of the human condition, attempts have been made to thwart that result.By all means do with your Will as you may but do not lose too much time over it. As with most things in life, there are no guarantees. Far better, perhaps, to put your effort into that game of bowls and enjoy the moment.

1. In a pennant game a bowl in course hits the jack. The jack is propelled into a ditch. The bow in course rolls on, and hits a live non-toucher knocking it into the ditch. The bowl in course rolls on and hits the now dead non-toucher into the ditch and deflects it sideways towards the jack. Should any corrective action be taken? If yes, why and by whom?

2. A bowl comes to rest and falls over and touches the jack whilst the next bowl is in course. The third moves forward to mark the bowl as a toucher, but the opposing third objects. Is the bowl a toucher?

3. A non-toucher rebounds from the face of the bank and hits a bowl in motion. What action is required?

4. You disagree with the umpire’s decision that a bowl is not out of bounds. What can you do about the decision?

5. A fast drive hits the jack which rebounds from the face of the bank onto the green within the rink boundaries. What should be done and by whom?

safari anyone?Tony Havercroft lives in Harare Zimbabwe and is currently the Vice President of Bowls Zimbabwe. While there’s still a long time before the World Bowls contingent lands in Adelaide, Tony is asking for help from local clubs. They have a very competitive side but unfortunately a very tight budget so they are looking for any members or ex Zimbabweans who might be interested in a holiday in Zimbabwe during the World Championships next year and would consider a temporary house swap in Harare or Bulawayo (or both) to assist with their side’s accommodation. As an additional incentive members of their side have contacts in the hospitality sector and particularly in the safari business and would be happy to arrange a very entertaining holiday, including bowls, which could mean significant cost savings for anyone who may be interested. if interested please contact tony havercroft on email [email protected]

The dead non-toucher should be removed from the ditch by either third. Law 27.4The dead bowl is classified as a neutral object. As the toucher in course was displaced by a neutral object and it has not disturbed the head after it was displaced the skips should agree where the bowls would have come to rest. If they cannot agree they should declare the end dead. Law 28.3.2.2

4. The rebounding bowl is a dead bowl, and therefore is a neutral object and should be removed from the rink of play. With regard to the bowl in motion the skips should agree as to where the bowl would have come to rest. If they cannot agree they should declare the end dead. Law 28.5.2
