The granting of an exemption by the Equal Opportunity Tribunal from s35(1)(b) and s39(1)(b) of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984 has allowed the Association to

organise and conduct single gender bowls competitions. On 27 April 2010 a Bowls SA Competition Policy for Season 2010/11 was ratified by the Bowls SA Council. The full policy is included on Page 30 and also available on the Bowls SA website at www.bowlssa.com.au Corporate partnerships are vital for the sustainability of any sport. Supporting Bowls SA partners and those that support your clubs by acknowledging their contribution is essential for them to ascertain return on their investment. So, if you’re utilising a sponsor’s service or purchasing a product after seeing an advertisement in the Bowler, make sure you let them know it is because of their involvement with bowls - that we way both the sport and the partner win. Bowls SA has recently formed a partnership with the Council Of The Aging (COTA) and I encourage members to consider joining. There are no age restrictions to becoming a member so anyone can join and enjoy the privileges of membership. The 2010 Australian Sides Championship at Holdfast Bay was a tremendous success, both on and off the green. The men’s and women’s sides improved remarkably from the previous year’s event in Canberra where they both finished seventh, to finish fourth and second respectively. These results led to South Australia being ranked second overall, behind Western Australia and in front of the traditionally dominant Eastern States in Queensland and New South Wales. The players should be congratulated on their performance, as well as coaches Andrew Smith and Faye Luke, whose contribution to the preparation and performance of the sides should not be underestimated.

The Holdfast Bay Bowling Club should also be acknowledged for their contribution to the success of the event. To host both the men’s and women’s events was a huge task and the club and their team of volunteers should be proud of their efforts. A special mention to John Caskey who was the Club’s event manager and worked tirelessly for months prior to the Championship, and many long days during, to ensure that the event was a success. Gaining mainstream media exposure for a sport such as bowls is difficult and therefore it was extremely disappointing to read a negative article in the lead up to the Australian Sides Championships. Hosting the prestigious Sides Championship was an excellent opportunity to promote the sport, and to have this undermined by the selfishness and ignorance of one or two individuals was extremely disappointing. Every member has the responsibility to promote the sport positively and should consider the ramifications and damage that can be done to the brand with articles such as these. As we all know, bowls is a great sport and positive promotion will only further its growth and development. Nominations are being sort for the Bowls SA High Performance Selection Panel for next season. If you have an interest in this area and believe that you have something to offer the sport then please consider nominating. Nominations close on 28 May and forms are available on the Bowls SA website. Finally, Bowls SA Development Manager John Cranwell has accepted a position with Squash SA and finished with the organisation on May 7. In his nearly three years with Bowls SA John has made a significant contribution to the development of the sport and we wish him well in his new endeavours.

"This was a great win", said the Australian Silver Tier Squad

member. "It was very satisfying to win the title playing with two great mates from the club that I play for.”

"This was my first state title so it's huge for me," she said of the win. "I have been in the state squad for

7 years so to actually win a title was great. It was just a magical moment. It was a nice feeling to win so well, a genuine team effort

and playing with my state team-mates was a real bonus."

Scott Taylor and Di Green both won their titles bowling with Dreamline

Bowls SA staff and metropolitan Councillors were provided with an opportunity to showcase their skills during March when the Annual Bowls SA versus Police Bowling Club match was

held at Edwardstown. Despite the Bowls SA contingent putting up a good fight the opposition were just that much better, affording another win to the Police. Thank you to Edwardstown for the use of their facilities and hospitality. In what was a very well organised and colourful event, the Blind Bowlers Association held their National Championships at Salisbury in April with all but two States represented. Congratulations and thank you to the Salisbury Bowling Club on their preparation prior to and during this event, and to the many, many helpers required in running this event. Congratulations to our representatives in the prestigious Australian Sides Championships held at Holdfast Bay during April. In what was a great effort, against powerful opposition, the women’s side came through to win Silver Medals and Penny Landherr’s

team of Janet Cocks, Sue Madden and Lyn Prosso won ‘Best rink’. The men’s side also had an improved performance finishing fourth helping SA to a combined second position on the overall ladder. The full report is on Page 8.The Bowls SA Calendar of Events has been set for the 2010-2011 season. While there are only so many days available for events, avoiding clashes can only help everyone to maximise entries, so I encourage all Clubs to keep this in mind when planning their tournaments.I also remind all players that when they enter a Bowls SA event, as a matter of courtesy and sportsmanship, they commit to playing all scheduled games. Congratulations to all State Event and Pennant winners and thank you to the Clubs and their Greens Managers for making their greens and facilities available for these events. Over the next month Regions, Associations and Member Clubs will be holding their Annual General Meetings. It is a good time to reflect on achievements, administration procedures, assess if communication and processes can be streamlined, and to check that Constitutions are up to date. I hope you have a safe and healthy winter break.

Spray Chalk InnovationA new COLOUR innovation in Chalk Spray manufactured first by Hunter Bowls for the Australian market.Bowls Australia has recognised the need for colour toucher spray due to the high take up of colour and multi coloured bowls in recent years.New bowls such as speckle, white, granite and black and white blends has made white chalk spray almost impossible to see for players and umpires alike. In an industry hungry for new products, combined with Bowls Australia’s mantra of always looking for improvements in the game,a coloured toucher spray was a necessity. With this in mind, Bowls Australia has worked closely with HunterBowls to develop the first coloured chalk spray. There will only be one colour for the game to stand side by side with the current white. This new colour is Lilac, it’s a specific PMS coded colour so tight quality control can be maintained throughout the game. The new coloured chalk spray will be easy to spot with its unique LILAC coloured cap. It’s a world first and Australian made.

Fire devastates Toorak BurnsideDuring late March members were devastated when intruders deliberately set fire to the Toorak Burnside BC, resulting in extensive and severe damage to the main club area. With major repairs required both inside and outside, the Club is grateful for the tremendous support from the Burnside City Council who promptly assisted by erecting temporary office accommodation, a marquee for player’s shelter and managed the clean up and storage of salvageable items. Their assistance has been outstanding and has enabled members to get out on the greens again and do what members like doing best, playing bowls.Getting on the greens again has also been a great team effort by club members whose spirit hasn’t been daunted by this unfortunate setback. Instead members have

assisted in many different ways in an endeavour to get the club back to ‘normal’ as quickly as possible. This camaraderie enabled the club to be open for business as usual, including providing bar facilities and holding social bowls throughout the winter

on Saturday and Wednesday until the beginning of the pennant season.Members from other clubs are most welcome to come visit the club for a game of bowls over winter and watch the reconstruction progress.

The Silver Medal winning SA Women’s Side

8 SA Bowler May 2010

After months of preparation Holdfast Bay Bowling & Croquet Club officials would have been hoping for a return to ideal conditions for the Australian Sides competition. Instead the heavens opened up and at 8am on the Friday morning the greens were under water. The Club should be congratulated on its hosting of the tournament in conditions which were hardly ideal. Whereever you went within the club environs 120 volunteers from the home club and others were close at hand and there was always food and drink available. Holdfast Bay members and officials, take a bow! Before we start on what was an amazing tournament it is worthwhile reflecting on events prior to the first game.It would be fair to say that our South Australian State team has struggled to impact on the National Sides competition for some time and there was much thought put into the selection of this year’s side. Both the Men’s and Women’s sides were selected by the selection panel with the rinks chosen with a view to balance within the teams. Our previous appearance in the Sides event in Canberra had produced a seventh placed finish and with the rinks reduced from four (16 a side) to three (12 a side) for the men, there was some optimism going into Holdfast Bay. Over the three and a half days it became increasingly obvious that the selection process was on the money as both teams performed up to, and exceeding expectations. Going into the event I spoke with

Women’s coach, Faye Luke. Faye is short in stature but huge in motivation and support skills. She has an engaging personality and an enthusiastic approach to bowls. As assistant coach with the Australian under 25 and under 18 National Teams she has learnt a lot about attitudes that drive success and her input was critical in the team’s overall performances. Faye’s motto for her team was to be Faster, fitter and stronger. She was excited about this year’s team and said that a lot of thought had gone into team structure at the selection table. The women’s side gelled from the first end of the first game and never let up. As individuals they were excellent and often brilliant. As a team they were an excitement machine which always had the crowd on its feet yelling for more. If there was ever a positive advertisement for bowls it was our girls at Holdfast Bay during the 2010 National Sides Championships.Who will ever forget the image of 21 year old Skip Kelli Wray in full flight after a drive as her rink of Sandra Wallace, Katrina Miller and 15 year old Breeanna Dickson high fived at the positive result. Against Queensland this rink picked up a six on the final end to force a 19 all draw and this end along with so many others epitomised the spirit within a team that refused to buckle under the pressure or lie down in the face of defeat. After the final game Sandra Wallace retired from representative play and was given a resounding send off by her team mates. Wallace is a veteran of many State campaigns and this season was a member of the Holdfast

team which won the Thursday Pennant. She was also an integral member of the Adelaide Premier 1 side which took third place in the Saturday Pennant. Sandra, the team will miss you but what a way to go out, a Silver medal in the National Sides competition and a Pennant

badge. Jeanette Hill is one of the most highly credentialed bowlers that South Australia has produced. A former Australian representative, Jeanette Skipped the rink of Riina Bradbrook, Jackie Gardiner and Renata Callisto. Bradbrook is a veteran of over 170 games for South Australia and was one of the key selections as Third. After so many tilts at the Sides competition the defeats of Queensland and NSW would have had her blood pumping. There were so many high points in this four’s performance but a cameo from Hill stands out. On the 20th end of a key game when five down on the head the Skip firstly drew third wood before playing a bowl that we all dream about, three inches behind the kitty for shot. That got the crowd off its feet I can tell you.Who will ever forget the performances of Penny Landherr and her rink of Janet Cocks, Sue Maddern and Lyn Prosso who won all seven games in an unprecedented performance? Not even our staunchest supporter could have predicted a seven out of seven result or the drama that unfolded in the final game against Northern Territory. Monday was the first fine day of the tournament and Landherr needed a strong win to take out the top Skip ranking. On the opposite side of the clubhouse WA were to play NSW and within the WA side were two Skips, Lee Poletti and Kathy Gobbart who also went into the final game with six wins. WA would ultimately take out the Marj Morris Trophy as top side.Late in the game it appeared that Landherr was in all sorts of trouble. Both Poletti and Gobbart had strong leads over their NSW opposition and our South Australian rink was down 18-8. Suddenly news came that Karen Murphy had picked up a five against

Gobbart and was back in the game. About the same time Landherr and her rink picked up two fives to draw level at 18 all before powering to a 23-18 win. It was a great performance and it is just a pity that we can’t see a replay of the game on video. The rink finished 63 shots over seven games against some of the best bowlers in the country. On the green Landherr appears totally relaxed and although there would have been times when she was churning over inside, her body language was always positive. While it was her first time Skipping for South Australia she has played 11 games for the Australian side and based on this performance there will be many more to come. In the final analysis, our women’s side were placed second a mere rink and a half out of top spot. We understand that a SA Women’s team has never beaten NSW or Queensland in a Sides Championship. This year they took care of business taking out both of the eastern powerhouses with the loss of half a rink. It gets no better than that!

“…Savour the moment and above all continue to be proud South Australians.”… Faye Luke.

Not long after the State side had been announced we spoke to coach Andrew Smith on how he saw the team’s chances in the 2010 event. After Bill Cornehls had returned to Queensland during the season, Smith had been asked to take over the reins and having him involved was always going to be a major plus for the side. He is a man who has reached the pinnacle in our sport having previously secured the coveted Singles berth with our National side. He is also an astute tactician and spent much of the tournament walking behind the rinks in support. There must have been times when he would have wished to be on the green with his team.Ultimately the team finished fourth after going into the final game on Monday morning with a chance of securing second spot. They could do nothing more than win on all rinks against Northern Territory in round

seven and they achieved that. In the final analysis the side was half a game and shots up out of second spot and shots up out of third. The selectors would have been pleased with that result as they look to rebuild the State team.Having ex-Australian player Dave Stockham once again available after an eight year lay off can only help in this task. Stockham’s rink of Scott Taylor, Andrew Hill and Mark Haines finished the event with three wins, three losses and a draw and in reality there were many times when good luck appeared to desert the experienced Skip. Hill at two had an excellent series and a year Skipping for Marion in season 2008/09 has taken his game to a new level. Two is always a difficult spot, particularly on slower greens when you are asked to draw shot but also reach the head. Jeff Aworth, for my money, was South Australia’s stand out player. With 80 games for Queensland under his belt before arriving in SA he is the complete bowler, relaxed and with a wide range of shots and superb weight control. Aworth

skipped his rink of Simon Dorr, Kane Coulls and debutant Col Saltmarsh to four wins and a draw over seven games. Importantly against NSW and Queensland, Aworth was brilliant firstly in a 19-18 win over Shane Garve (NSW) and then in a 17 all draw with Anthony Kiepe (Queensland). Coulls would have walked away from the event pleased with his performance as would have Dorr. In support of Aworth both were excellent. Having previously represented Tasmania, Saltmarsh debuted for SA in the series and his performances were simply outstanding. Against the best leads in the country he stood out with his concentration and skill in all conditions. You can bet that we are going to see more of this guy who appears to have a long State career ahead of him. The rink of Ashley Klose, Wayne Ruediger, Max Kleinig and Adam Forbes struggled in the early stages of the tournament before recovering to record big wins in the final two games. As the only four up against Tasmania, a 26-12 win over David McLean secured the win for SA in round six and gave an indication of the ability within the rink. There is little doubt that all four deserved their spot.On the Sunday evening I spoke to Andrew Smith prior to the final game on the Monday morning. “Our South Australian side has been disappointing over the last three or four years” he said. “In this series we needed a good performance as a stepping stone for the player’s future. A win tomorrow (against Northern Territory) will make it a satisfying tournament.”He got his wish and the overall performance of the side bodes well for the future.

Kerry and Audrey at the Champion of Club Champion Pairs

Craig in action at the State Singles 10 SA Bowler May 2010

Earlier this year Craig Treloar of Berri won the State Singles at Gawler on his 25th birthday. On the sideline were his grandmother Audrey Hefford and his father Dennis. The Heffords and the Treloars are a close knit family who command a heap of respect from those around them. They are talented bowlers as results in major events have shown. They are also genuinely nice people.Audrey Hefford has been a long time inhabitant of the small settlement of Cobdogla six kms from the township of Barmera in South Australia’s Riverland. After the passing of her husband George she has maintained her lifestyle in the idyllic community while playing bowls for the Berri Bowling Club. I was tempted in this article to call her the Matriarch but she would more than likely have kicked my backside for using the term so hereafter she will be known as just plain Audrey. George Hefford was the winner of a Country Pairs title and his wife Audrey is well known throughout Australia after a long and successful career in lawn bowls. George and Audrey had two bowling daughters Kerry and Christine. Both have won State titles. For those who don’t know, Kerry married Dennis Treloar who has also been a State title holder and has played for South Australia on 102 occasions. I think we get the picture.

There are some strong genes in there somewhere!Well that takes care of the women but the men of the family have great resumes as well. After Craig won the State Singles this year the family reminded Dennis that he is the only one of the Riverland group not to win the Singles title. He did plead his case however. “Hang on” he said defensively “I’ve won the State Champion of Champions surely that counts!” I’m on your side mate of course it counts and as the father and husband who has put up with those women winning everything you deserve a pat on the back. One of the great things about our sport is that a grandmother or grandfather can play at a competitive level with their grand children and how good

is that. Were not too sure what the conversation is over the dinner table but you can bet that it’s not politics or the world economy. The Heffords and Treloars must have replayed games a thousand times over the years and good on them. That’s all part of our great sport. As long as the world keeps spinning we’ll be turning up on the greens.

In February three generations and five members of a family played for Hahndorf. Rhiannon and Josh are the children of Kathy and Greg Miller and Barry Rimmer is Kathy’s father. Barry has been a member for many years and his love of the game has spread to the rest of the family with Kathy joining last year and her husband Greg and their children Rhiannon and Josh first trying their hand at Night Owls and now taking the next step to pennants.

The Bowls SA State Champion of Club Champion Pairs for 2010 was decided on Sunday 2 May at Edwardstown with Kensington/Marryatville champions triumphant in both events. The Men’s Semi-finals saw Holdfast’s Darryl Moulden and Mark Green defeat Henley’s John Harrington and George Powell 11-3 while Gary and Joshua Thompson recovered from a 0-6 deficit to defeat Modbury’s Pat McGuinness and Rhys Taylor 16-7.In the Women’s Semi-finals Penny Landherr and Josie Wright booked their Finals spot with a comfortable 14-5 win over Berri’s mother and daughter combination of Audrey

Hefford and Kerry Treloar while Zena Pocock and Margaret Cooper defeated Tranmere’s Leanne Uzubalis and Barbara Camporeale 19-10. The Men’s event was won by father and son combination Gary and Josh Thompson when in a nail biting Final, with his last bowl, Josh drew the extra shot required for victory to score two and win the final 15-14 over Holdfast Bay’s Darryl Moulden and Mark Green. The Women’s Final was a one sided affair with mother and daughter Josie Wright and Penny Landherr convincingly beating Zena Pocock and Margaret Cooper of Hope Valley 26-8.

In what is an impressive testament to bowls being a family sport, eight of the 16 players in Laura’s Division 1 side in the North Western Bowling Association are father and son combinations. The 2009/10 season was one to remember for Laura’s top side, winning the Division 1 pennant for the first time in 87 years after defeating Port Pirie Red. In a cliffhanger of a final, Pirie Skipper Chris Flavel required eight shots on the final end to draw proceedings. After three dead ends, Laura’s Anthony Kleinig put the white in the ditch to claim victory. Laura also became the first team to win the Division 1 pennant after being promoted the year before. The team also consisted of the first lady to win a division 1 pennant, Karin Lynch, who partnered her husband Jim in victory. A truly magnificent effort from a club of only 41 registered members.

The Bowls SA State Triples commenced on Sunday 28 February with a field of 69 men’s teams and 47 women’s teams in the metropolitan draw. Following sectional play, 11 men’s teams were joined by five country entrants while 10 women’s teams were joined by six country counterparts. The Payneham Bowling Club played host to the final 16 sectional play on Sunday 14 March in very blustery conditions. Section winners in the men were Skippered by Murray Bridge’s Blake Kelly, Scott Taylor (Somerton), Payneham greenkeeper Luke

Pietersma and 2008/09 State Singles Champion Brett Hurrell. In the women’s event, Semi-final qualifiers were Ascot Park’s Amanda Waters, Di Clements (Red Hill), Gawler’s Marlene Heffernan and Kerry “from Berri” Treloar. The morning session of the men’s event saw Scott Taylor account for Bill Leggat, Alby Aay and Blake Kelly 15-8 whilst his Somerton team-mate Brett Hurrell partnered with Danny Deed and Hawthorn’s Hank Pelgrim defeated Payneham’s John

Cook, Justin Morris and Luke Pietersma 11-10 after an extra end was needed. The men’s Final became a battle of Somerton versus Somerton with Taylor, Darryl Williams and Michael White eventually winning the day over Brett Hurrell’s Triple 14-10 to claim the Bowls SA Men’s State Triples trophy.

State Triples

In the women’s Semi-finals Treloar defeated Gawler’s Kay Skuse, Dawn Warland and Marlene Heffernan 18-10 while Clements snuck in over the Ascot Park Triple of Sharon Saler, Helen Schutz and Amanda Waters 11-10. The final was set and from the outset, despite a galant effort by Di Clements, Kerrie Hayes and Shirley Walker, the Triple of Treloar, Wendy Clarke and Di Green were dominant, running away with the Women’s State Triples title 22 - 6. A big thank you to Payneham for hosting the final two days of the event and to all volunteers for their assistance during the event.

Michael White, Darryl Williams and Scott Taylor

Kerry Treloar, Di Green and Wendy Clarke

Following on from their success in the 2007 Men’s State Pairs, Scott Thulborn and Adam Forbes again paired up to contest the 2009-10 event which was played at Grange. Thulborn and Forbes showed they are

State Pairscertainly a class act, defeating highly rated, ex-State player Dennis Treloar, who paired with his son Craig. Treloar showed he can still match it with the current crop of High Performance players, keeping Thulborn

and Forbes under pressure throughout the game, eventually losing 11-8. Thulborn and Forbes then went on to defeat Randall Marsh and Steve Grant 14-13 in the Final with the game a fitting finale to this prestigious event. The Women’s Pairs was also played at Grange, with the pairing of Jan Underdown and Maxine Savage taking the Bowls SA Women’s State Pairs title. Desiree Cunningham and Cassandra

Harvey were successful in winning Gold when they defeated McPharlin and Dickson 15-11, with the Bronze going to Danielle Fuss and Prue Goonan who defeated Tamzin and Candise Jenke 16-6.The final matches of the Championships saw the medal matches for the boy’s Singles take place with both Johnson and Pedersen looking for their second Gold for 2010. With the assistance of Freemasons SA/NT, Bowls SA has had a very successful year following the introduction of the Night Owls Super Series with a total of 158 teams from 29 metropolitan clubs competing over two series. The aim of the event was to provide Night Owlers, who at this stage of their bowling career are not ready to play in the regular pennant competition, with an opportunity to explore their competitive streak and also to expand opportunities for clubs to increase their membership. Thank you to Peter Symons and Ian Jurgs

from the Freemasons for all their assistance throughout the Series and also to all the Night Owls Coordinators who assisted me throughout the year. Next season we will be looking to take the Freemason’s Super Series to the country Regions with the plan of holding at least five events prior to Christmas. More details will be sent to clubs before the commencement of the season.State Night Owls FinalAlong with the four teams that qualified through the Freemason’s Super Series, events were held in metropolitan and country Regions to determine qualifiers for the State Night Owls Final. A full report on this event is on page 28. Thank you to Councillors and Club Coordinators Graeme Huppatz and Malcolm Weiss (Riverland/Renmark); Don Crosby, Barbara Tiggemann and Nick Storer (Fleurieu/Willunga); David Lamond and Brian Smith (Lower North/Mallala) and Rita Jones and Graeme Smail (Whyalla Golf) for conducting the country events. Without these volunteers, events like these wouldn’t happen.

Australian Sides Championships 2010From an organising point of view, it was a pleasure to watch Holdfast Bay at work. To John Caskey and his committee of many, many workers, take a bow; the event was a huge success. We now look forward to working with Bowls Australia to assist with the Asia Pacific Championships, which kick off at Holdfast Bay from 26 November 2011. To all the clubs that provided greens and clubhouse facilities for visiting States prior to Australian Sides, thankyou.Photo Gallery www.bowlssa.com.auOver the next few months we will be compiling a photo gallery on the Bowls SA website and will endeavour to upload photos for every Bowls SA event. These photos will be copyrighted to Bowls SA and permission will need to be sought, in writing, for reproduction.

The Marion Bowling Club played host to the Bowls SA Under 35’s Open Singles in superb autumn conditions over the Easter long weekend.Upon completion of Saturday’s play, 14 section winners remained including two of the State Under 18 girls, Breeanna Dickson (Payneham) and Candise Jenke (Loxton). Two knockout rounds were played on Sunday to get

the draw down to the Semi-final stage. Last year’s champion Paul Garnett had a good win first up over Michael Lodge 21-16 but was knocked out at the Quarter-final stage by Modbury’s Scott Wise 21-18. A big day for Wise after earlier defeating Breeanna Dickson 21-12. His opponent in the Semi-final was Marion’s Brady Slater, who defeated Jervois’ Andrew Stasinowsky

21-12 in his sole Sunday knockout. At the other end of the draw, Marion’s Simon Chewter defeated Gawler’s Daryl Kubisch 21-13 before ousting Payneham Club Singles Champion Ben Harris 21-17. His opponent on Monday morning was Semaphore’s Zane Cini who defeated Brad Klose 21-19 before eliminating Tanunda’s Tim Liersch 21-10.On Monday the crowd witnessed

Under 35 State Singlesa brilliant Semi between Slater and Wise. Brady led 7–3 early before Scott found his form and saw the scores 11-11 after 15 ends. With the score at 21-20 after 25 ends, Slater was gifted a four and the Semi-final 25–20.The other Semi-final between Zane Cini and Simon Chewter saw a one sided match eventually go the way of Chewter 25–11.The Final between Marion’s Brady Slater and Simon Chewter was a great spectacle of draw bowling. With some big numbers throughout the Final, it was Slater’s day and he was rewarded with the coveted prize over some very tough competition. The final score saw Slater defeat Chewter 25–13.A big thank you to the Marion Bowling Club for hosting the event and to all the markers and umpires who gave up their valuable time over the Easter break.Brady Slater(right) with Runner up Simon Chewter

replacing the seating in readiness for pennant competition on Thursday.Upon reflection it is remarkable how much was accomplished in so little time with the help of dedicated club volunteers and the thoroughness and professionalism of the Shadex team. The shade structures will benefit the club and all visiting players for many years to come.

A working party of 15 volunteers completely removed existing seating, scoreboards and shades in preparation for the team from Shadex to arrive. The team arrived at midday on a Tuesday and by dusk on the following day the shade installation was complete. Quite amazing!Club volunteers followed the Shadex crew, installing new scoreboards and

With the the end of rink shades not being updated since well before the amalgamation of the Marryatville and Kensington Clubs in 1995, by 2009 many were showing signs of fatigue and only providing limited sun protection. A timely advert for Shadex Industries in the SA Bowler advised that their representative would be available for an on-site consultation. The committee decided to arrange for an early November meeting which resulted in the Club receiving a comprehensive quotation for the shades and installation.Whilst the Committee was considering the quotation, high winds destroyed three shades, forcing the club to a make a decision and it was agreed to replace shades on all 21 rinks. As is often the case it was not a straight forward replacement with the existing scoreboards being attached to the old shades and the frames of the old shades also holding up the end of rink seating.

over Lyndsey Trenorden of Lenswood (7 - 4). The Bronze Medal was won by Courtney Afford of the Jervois Primary School (7 - 4).The final score for the boy’s Singles Gold Medal game was no indication of the closeness of the game as the first three bowls were all touchers, with well over eight touchers in a five end game. The eventual winner was Edward Bray of St James, Jamestown over Ben Williamson of Lenswood Primary School (7 - 1). The Bronze Medal was won by Gerrin Jenke of Moorook Primary School (10 - 1).Thank you to the students, teachers and parents involved as well as all the volunteers, Holdfast Bay and everyone who supported this very successful event.

SSSSA 2010With 49 Triples teams and 22 Singles, totalling 169 high school students, the 2010 SSSSA Lawn Bowls Championships showed a significant increase on last year’s entries. The championships started with the minor round where each team played three short games against others in their section. The eventual section winners and some runners-up then played knockout finals after lunch resulting in eight Triples teams and eight open Singles playing off for medals. From the six schools entered in the Triples, the Gold Medal winners were the team from Riverton and Districts School. The Silver Medal went to St Michaels College Team 9 and Bronze to Woodcroft College Team 2.The final four players in the Singles were all members of the Bowls SA U18 State Squad. Ben Johnson of Cardijn College won the Gold Medal, the Silver Medal went to Nathan Pedersen of Le Fevre High School and Bronze to Prue Goonan of Nazareth Catholic School.Congratulations to the finalists and medalists and thank you to the students, teachers and parents who supported this event, Holdfast Bay and the volunteers for their assistance, ensuring the Championships were so successful.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with Bowls SA, the interaction I have had with our clubs and members has been a highlight. I wish Bowls SA and the Development team all the best in the future, especially with the new Henselite Junior Development Program.” John Cranwell

The growth of the sport in this area is well documented and we are grateful for the initiative and dedication John has shown to see these programs flourish. We wish John well in his quest to further his knowledge in sports administration.

SAPSASA 2010The 2010 SAPSASA Lawn Bowls Championships were the biggest ever with 61 Triples teams and 51 Singles entries totalling 234 primary school students. Thirty schools entered with a large percentage being from country areas. The Holdfast Bay BC again provided four top quality greens. The day started with the minor round where each team played at least three short games against others in their section. The eventual section winners and some runners-up were placed into the knockout finals after lunch. Sixteen teams of Triples, eight boys and eight girls Singles then played off for medals. There were many close fought matches in the Triples with some schools unfortunately drawing teams from their own school. The Semi-final saw two Tanunda Primary School teams facing off and last year’s winners Ardrossan Primary School against Tanunda Lutheran School. The Gold Medal was an all ‘Barossa’ affair with Tanunda PS Team 4 against Tanunda Lutheran School with Tanunda Luthern taking home the Gold (8 - 2). The Bronze Medal playoff was won by Ardrossan Team 4 (6 - 2).The girl’s Singles Gold Medal match went through to a sixth end tie-break with the eventual winner being Nicolette Lelos of West Lakes Shore

New ShirtsThanks to the ongoing sponsorship by Henselite, two Junior Development Squads, the ‘Southern Cracka Jackas’ and the ‘Yorke Peninsula All Stars’, received their distinctive and colourful Henselite Junior Squad shirts from Henselite representative Daryl Rudland at presentations in their Regions. The Henselite Junior Squads program is designed to promote the sport and provide opportunities for all players under the age of 18 to develop their skills through regular competitions against their peers. Squad members were given the opportunity to have input into the colour and design and were so happy with the final product it was rumoured that one even wore his to school the next day.As part of the presentation evening Squad members played their parents in a bowls challenge and with everyone joining in it was a great night of bowls and a great opportunity for all ages to showcase their skills.Winter Bowls Winter Bowls started with a bang in early May when six squads including the Southern Cracka Jackas, Eastern Jets, Lower North High Jackers, Riverland Drivers, Hill Panthers and a composite team of players attended the first session of trial games. The format was two games of 10 ends with each team allowed to play two ‘Power Plays’. If a team elects to ‘power play’, any shots they get on that end are doubled. The players responded enthusiastically to this concept with the Riverland Drivers showing their skills coming out winners of both games and the other Squads winning a game each.

The afternoon session included fun activities with parents getting involved, and one-on-one coaching to pass on hints and new skills. The day finished with a corner to corner, “It was one of the best corner to corner games I’ve seen. Four players got within half a mat length of the jack, which made it very interesting for all watching” Kelli Wray said. Thanks to Payneham for allowing use of their facilities and greens. Bowls SA appreciates the time and effort that the Coordinators and Assistants freely give to organise training, drills and games to make the Squads such a great success. Thank you to all the clubs that are supporting the Squads by providing greens for training and games. Without their support this program would not be possible. Region 11Ascot Park In what is thought to be a first for the sport and certainly for SA, the Ascot Park BC has established a Junior Scholarship Program to provide an environment for juniors that are conducive to inclusion in Club activities and to their individual development. The Club sees the future of the sport to be in the hands of the younger players and the program will also ensure the playing future of the Club. Preparations are also well under way for the refurbishment of the Clubrooms with a budget of $500,000 approved and plans submitted to the Marion Council for development approval. Once this is obtained work will begin, hopefully during the winter of 2010.

Night Owls

For some it’s a great night out with friends and family, for others it’s internal and external club rivalry that continues from year to year. Whatever it is, Night Owls is here to stay and some clubs simply couldn’t survive without it. From Thursday March 28, the 2009/10 Night Owls season wrapping up with the first of six Regional events being held in the search for qualifiers for the State Night Owls Final. The top two teams from each Regional event, along with four teams that qualified through the Freemasons Super Series, made up 18 teams that ultimately competed for the grand prize on Saturday 10 April at Holdfast Bay.

The first Regional event saw 24 teams from the Fleurieu & Great Southern area compete in perfect conditions at Willunga. The night was a roaring success and eventual winners of the night were the Encounter Bay Football Club and

past State Night Owls Champions, Lion Ballers from Willunga.Tuesday 30 March saw the hosting of three Regional events. The Modbury event saw teams from clubs in Regions 9 and 10 do battle and although numbers were down, the standard of play was exceptional. Modbury team No Bull and Salisbury’s Test Eagles claimed the honours. At Mallala, on their beautiful synthetic surface, Region 8 Councillor David Lamond took control of teams from as far away as Mintaro and Port Wakefield with sides from Riverton and Mintaro pushing through to qualify. The final event of the evening was the Riverland event at Renmark,

attended to by Region 4 Councillor Graeme Huppatz and Renmark’s Malcolm Weiss. In a hotly contested affair, Loxton’s Taplan Turkeys and Renmark RSL’s Wild Cards ran out winners. On Wednesday 31 March 16 teams from Region 12 clubs converged on West Lakes. The late withdrawal of a side made things interesting, however some eager supporters and club members were able to assist on the night. Last minute changes are always frustrating so a big thank you must go to those who helped out. In a West Lakes dominated event, Chariots of Fire and Byus4 were the winners on the night. To make things a little more interesting, Chariots of Fire had already qualified for the Final through the Freemasons Super Series and once a count back took place, West Lakes Team Nomis were granted the second qualifying spot from Region 12. A big shout out must also go to the guys from Novar Gardens. In the true spirit of Night Owls, the boys offered themselves as a wild card entry into the final if a team had to pull out at the last minute. Fortunately they weren’t needed but the gesture was very much appreciated. The final qualifying event for the year was held on Easter Thursday at Ascot Park. Sixteen teams again entered the draw but for the second night running, the draw had to be juggled with the no show of two teams. Even numbers was the key here and the night went off without a hitch with Somerton’s Tigers and Ascot Park’s Maulers successful in winning the evening. The last two teams to enter the final were Natrad and The Dragons

Page 29: SA Bowler May10

Night OwlsChampions. West Lakes duo Chariots of Fire and Byus4 took out the minor placings with the next five or six spots calculated using shots up. All teams are to be congratulated on their success at Regional level and on their performance on the final night. Once again, a big thank you to Holdfast Bay along with every other club that hosted events throughout the year.To the clubs that entered teams, congratulations and thank you for your support. To the clubs that didn’t enter teams this year, please consider it for next season. With the support of your club, these sorts of events will go from strength to strength.

from Whyalla Golf. These two teams dominated the Whyalla Golf Night Owls competition and although a qualifying event wasn’t held, both teams were itching for a spot in the State Final. Appreciative of the distance and cost involved in coming to Adelaide for the night, how could they be knocked back. A big thank you to Rita Jones and Geoff Smail from Whyalla Golf for taking the State Night Owls Final to its furtherest point so far. After all teams were confirmed, Holdfast Bay was the venue for the State Night Owls Final, with a big thank you to Kevin Lewis for allowing Bowls SA to run this event, at the conclusion of the second day of the Australian Sides Championships. It was great that the Night Owlers who came to the club during the day got a chance to witness some of Australia’s best in action and may have even inspired them for the night. After two rounds, only one team remained undefeated and only had to win their final six end match to take the title. Not a bad effort considering that they had to score a five on the last end of their first two matches to win both games 7-6. After the completion of the three rounds, No Bull from Modbury was the only undefeated team and were announced 2010 Bowls SA State Night Owls

Unbiased Opinion by Anthony kerinJohnston withers

BOWLS AND THE LAW – AN ENGAGING OPPORTUNITYMembers would no doubt be aware of the decision of the Equal Opportunities Commission of 26th February 2010 regarding an application for exemption from having to comply with some sections of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984.It has been a fascinating exercise to gain an understanding of the game and its interaction with the law. It has been my pleasure to be associated with Bowls SA for several years now. The opportunity to assist in a more formal legal fashion was readily accepted. Being a non bowler, I felt it was important to gain some deeper understanding of the game so I purchased ‘Lawn Bowls – A Guide for Beginners’ by John Archer and Rex Davies. I know playing the game is the only way to completely understand it, but the book was engaging from a number of perspectives. It gives a brief history of lawn bowls. Lawn bowls has been around for a very long time, even present in ancient Egypt. Henry III banned it because people were playing it too much instead of practicing with their bow and arrows, no doubt detracting from their ability to save the kingdom from marauding invaders.Later, Kings of England also banned the game. For a time it was only allowed to be played by the landed gentry and of course no history of bowls would be complete without mentioning Sir Francis Drake. With the ultimate display of self confidence on 19th July 1588 at Plymouth, Drake declared he would first finish the game of bowls that he was playing, and then nip out and beat the Spaniards on a different surface. The game of bowls has been subject to rules and regulations and laws throughout its history. The interaction of sport and the law have dramatically increased recently and has become big business at many levels. Bowls is not immune from the effects of such changes. Regulation of it is through its own administration and the laws more generally is a natural outcome of an evolving more complex community. The application before the Tribunal came

about due to the vision and foresight of the Executive and Open Gender Steering committee of Bowls SA who saw that time had come to deal with an issue which had arisen a few years ago.Equality before the law is a principle with which no one would quibble. The Act was originally enacted in 1984 and then was significantly amended last year. The Minister who ultimately introduced the Bill, the Honourable Gail Gago, said:

“Equal Opportunity laws exist to allow all of South Australians to take part equally in public life. Everyone should have equal opportunities in the fields of work, education, qualifications, access to goods and services, lodging, land holding and membership of associations. No one should be excluded from taking part in society because of the prejudice of others and no one should be harassed or victimised in the exercise of these rights. The government is committed to these values and so it proposes some important expansions of the present law.”

She went on to say that: “At the same time the Government is mindful that the law must have standards that are fair and reasonable. It must avoid imposing unjustifiable hardships of anyone”.

Many members may still ask themselves why was the current action necessary?Several provisions of the Act require that there can be no discrimination in what services are provided to members of an association. The failure to provide an appropriate level of competition or a failure to allow a person of either gender to compete against someone of either gender could potentially have led to an allegation that Bowls SA was in breach of the Act. Bowls SA had already encountered a complaint of that nature and dealt with it reasonably, sensibly and cooperatively with the Equal Opportunities Commission some years ago. That is what prompted the Board through the Steering Committee to produce the Open Gender policy and to consider what steps should be taken to remedy the potential for disputes arising on this very basis. It was a courageous initiative to take out an application in advance to seek an exemption from the application to Bowls SA to the extent that it might apply.Under the Equal Opportunity Act there are some exemptions from having to comply with it by force of the legislation itself. Section 48 says that the exclusion

of persons of the one sex from participation in a competitive sporting activity in which the strength, stamina or physique of the competitor is relevant is not rendered unlawful.Bowls SA specifically indicated to the Tribunal in its application that for the purpose of the current application this was not relied upon. Bowls SA can therefore advance that argument at a later time should it be necessary. What all this means is that Bowls SA can now continue to advance and refine its Open Gender policy which will cater for all members to be able to participate in the sport in the manner in which they wish. As a result of the decision, Bowls SA has already considered its competition policy for 2010/11 and this can be found on the opposite page. The decision of the Tribunal considered the administrative structure of Bowls SA and the Open Gender policy in great detail. Evidence was put to them that the policy had in fact resulted in a reduction in participation in lawn bowls since the policy had been in place. The Tribunal was impressed with the numerous submissions, nearly all favouring an open gender competition to be conducted alongside a single gender competition creating an avenue for everyone to enjoy whatever competition they would like. The passion with which people wrote their submissions, was inspiring. The game is undoubtedly held in high regard and greatly loved by its members. The Tribunal reminded itself that the Act seeks to establish standards of social conduct. Participation in sport, and equal opportunity to do so, is of course a desirable goal to achieve the very purpose of the Equal Opportunity Act itself. Unfortunately the Act’s application was having the reverse effect and was unreasonably harsh or burdensome in that particular circumstance. It was the evidence of the members which was the turning point in the hearing and members are to be commended for their efforts. It was argued that the material and the statistics produced provided evidence of the objects of the Act itself were being eroded by Bowls SA’s attempts to comply with the Act by implementing an open gender policy, bearing in mind that it had to do so. The Tribunal found the unintended consequence of permitting men to play in women’s competitions had reduced the opportunities for women to play Bowls in some clubs rather than enhancing those opportunities. The Tribunal went on to say:

Following an application to the Equal Opportunity Tribunal by Bowls SA, the Association has been granted a two year exemption by the Tribunal from s35(1)(b) and s39(1)(b) of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984 to enable the Association to organise and conduct single gender bowls competitions. This exemption was granted until 30 June 2012 with the expectation that Bowls SA will undertake a process to rearrange its competitions and deal with the Equal Opportunities Act in a more permanent way.It is essential that Bowls SA balances the requirements of the Judgment and the members to ensure that the sport continues to prosper. The Association must continue to move forward with the provision of open competitions that have occurred over the last two years, but also provide the opportunity for members to participate in single gender competitions as desired. Throughout the process, it has also become apparent that there are different requirements for metropolitan and country areas. There is a need to allow flexibility for Associations to implement competitions that suit their specific needs, whilst still complying with the parameters of this policy.1. Selection PolicyEach Member Club shall have a Selection Policy based on merit, with the criteria and process for selection transparent and accountable to all members.2. EligibilityAny Bowls SA member with Full, Junior or Student registration wanting to be considered for selection in a pennant competition under the jurisdiction of Bowls SA shall be eligible for selection in accordance with the Rules and Conditions of Play for that competition.3. Competition formats Every Controlling Body, as per The Laws of The Sport of Bowls, must endeavour to offer an open competition where selection is based solely on merit. There is no requirement to offer a single gender competition if it is deemed not practical or warranted.Where there are separate men’s and women’s Associations, consultation between these bodies should occur to consider the practicalities of implementing an open competition.4. Position in Rink/TeamIn an open competition, any player who is eligible for selection shall be entitled to be considered to play in any position in the rink/team based on merit, in accordance with the Selection Policy and Rules and Conditions of Play for that competition.5. Side UniformsIn some situations club uniforms may differ between women and men and therefore uniformity in playing apparel will be difficult to achieve in open competitions. It is therefore satisfactory for players to wear the Member Club’s male or female uniform as registered with Bowls SA, which carries the club name and logo and the Bowls Australia logo.6. Heat RuleThe Heat Rule as determined by the Controlling Body for that competition shall apply. Any player who nominates for selection in a particular competition shall be deemed to have accepted the Heat Rule applicable to that competition. 7. Player Rights – SelectionAny player who believes that they have not been considered for selection based on merit may firstly approach the Club Selectors/Chair of Selectors (as shall be determined by the Club) and if dissatisfied thereafter shall have the right to refer the matter to the Club Board of Management, or such other panel/body as the Board of Management shall determine.8. FinalsAll players participating in a competition shall be eligible for selection to play in Finals subject to eligibility as set out in the Rules and Conditions of Play for the respective competition.9. Opposite Gender PlayersThe Controlling Body for each single gender competition shall determine the guidelines for which Opposite Gender Players are able to be used in that competition.OG should be noted next to Opposite Gender Players on all scorecards and result sheets. The Bowls SA Competition Policy is available at www.bowlssa.com.au

Competition Policy “that the cultural change being brought by the implementation of the policy was reducing participation in lawn bowls (which is an important part of the social life of the community) rather than facilitating participation which is what the Act seeks to do.”

The Tribunal decided that it was appropriate to give Bowls SA an exemption to 30 June 2012 to further consider the issue of discrimination and that Bowls SA will need to consider how to address these issues into the future. The Executive and Committee will undoubtedly continue to work very hard on the topic as to how to solve this problem. For now the problem is averted. The costs of complaints and consequences thereof are put to one side. Members can rest assured that the sport of bowls will continue to form a critical part of the fabric of the community, both in the city and in particular in rural districts. Since ancient Egypt, it is undoubtedly the case that bowls has undergone tremendous changes on a continuing basis, and that change in attitudes and policies will be necessary in the future. Once, as I have learned, bowls was played with unbiased wooden spherical bowls. Perhaps “The Guide for Beginners” can have the last word:

“Like any sport, lawn bowls has evolved over time when the first bowls were round, made out of stone and played over much shorter distance than they are now...Lawn bowls is a wonderful game that can be played by people of all ages from all walks of life as one of the popular slogan’s says “bowls is for everyone” and this is irrespective of age, sex, physical condition or ambition”.

One of these days when time permits I will undoubtedly get to know the game in its true sense other than from the dusty pages of law books or the fresh invigorating “Guide for Beginners”. And the game no doubt will continue to adapt to change that now confronts it, just as it has done for thousands of years.

I f you’re a retiree looking for modern housing in the southern suburbs, do I have some great news for you: the new Reserve Lifestyle Village at Woodcroft

is now open!Already a hit with ‘baby boomer’ buyers,

the $60 million village located on the corner of Pimpala Road and Sir James Hardy Way has just welcomed its fi rst residents, with many more set to move in over coming months.

And what a fantastic village it is. When fully complete it will include 150 spacious homes, as well as a community centre and extensive leisure facilities including an indoor swimming pool, billiards room and gymnasium.

Plenty of homes have already been sold – many straight off the plan – which not only endorses the popularity of the project, but also highlights the shortage of high quality retiree housing in Adelaide’s south.

So this village really is a huge boost for the region. Hundreds of retirees will soon call The Reserve home, where relaxed independent living will combine with a fun,

social atmosphere. Perfect for the over-55s among us who are looking to slow down a little – but not too much!

Like other Lifestyle SA villages throughout the State, The Reserve will also feature state-of-the-art security measures such as automatic card-only access gates, plus the latest technology including the availability of broadband internet access in every home.

So why not drop into The Reserve at Woodcroft this weekend for a look around. Otherwise, give Roxanne at Lifestyle SA a call or visit www.lifestylesa.com.au

QuestionsWhilst determining the result of an end, a director removes one of 1. his team’s bowls from the head counting it as a shot before the opponent has agreed to it being a counter. What should happen? Before a match a skip asks you as the umpire of the day, to approve 2. of a substitute for his third who has strained his wrist and is unable to play. During the match the player arrived at the club to watch the play. What action would you take? What is the difference between an eligible member and an intended 3. member? May either act as a substitute?May an eligible member act as a substitute in more than one team in 4. other rounds in the same competition?A bowl in course is displaced by an opponent, but the head is not 5. disturbed.
