Welcome back to what promises to be an exciting year of bowls in South

Australia, with the highlight being when ‘the World takes centre stage’ in November and December for the 2012 World Bowls Championships at the Lockleys and Holdfast Bay Bowling Clubs. A significant amount of work has gone into the preparation of this

event and with 28 teams from all over the World descending on Adelaide and the World’s best players battling out

Championships promises to be a spectacular showcase of the sport. It is also great to have a South Australian in the Australian team and I congratulate Grange’s Wayne Ruediger on his selection. Wayne is a great role model for the sport and his selection for the World Championships is testament to his work ethic and his desire to improve and I wish him all the best for the tournament. The Championships provide the opportunity to see the sport played at its highest level in your own backyard and I encourage all Members to take the opportunity to attend the event and support and cheer on Wayne and his Aussie teammates. Information on the event and tickets are available at the World Bowls 2012 website www.worldbowls2012.com

The support of corporate partners is crucial to the sport and Bowls SA is pleased to announce the formation of a partnership with Popi Australia, which sees the company sponsoring the scorecards that Bowls SA supply to all Member Clubs. Popi Australia is a South Australian business that provides cash flow solutions to retirees with the aim of increasing their financial freedom. I would like to thank Brenton and Rosie for their support and if you are interested in finding out more information on the company details are on Page 15.I hope that you achieve your goals on and off the green and wish all Members the best for the season ahead.

As we prepare to begin another season I trust you are all eager to get out on the green and enjoy the

social atmosphere and friendly rivalry of the sport. At governance level, Bowls SA has undergone some changes as of the Bowls SA Annual General Meeting held on September 3 and a full report is on Page 6.I appreciate the support I was shown in being re-elected as Bowls SA President and as I start my next term I would like to encourage all members to make

themselves aware of the governance needs of their Club, Region and Bowls SA and give serious thought to what they can offer in

this crucial area. Many of you have sound business knowledge and skills which could be utilised as

administrators in our sport. In some cases the very survival of the Club hinges not only on having skilled administration personnel in office, but a viable succession plan in place.Regions are generally made up of upwards of 20 Member Clubs and yet we sometimes find the only nominations for Region personnel are coming from the same Member Club. For obvious reasons this is not good governance and in accordance with the Bowls SA Constitution is not permitted, so please consider what you can do to assist in these areas. World Bowls 2012 is now only weeks away and everything is on track for a very exciting and successful event, even more so following the announcement that Grange member Wayne Ruediger has been selected to play for Australia. Congratulations Wayne.During my three terms as Bowls SA President I have had the pleasure of visiting all 12 Regions for openings and special occasions and have appreciated the opportunity to meet with members and hear firsthand about their local issues. The CDO program has proved to be enormously successful in assisting

with these local issues with Community Development Officers, Richard Law and Mark Easton, now on their second visit to many clubs undertaking Club Health Checks and assessing if business practices are sound. Forty-eight Clubs have been assisted with preparation of their Strategic Plan and Business Plans have been established that can be passed onto the incoming President and Secretary. It’s now many years since the National Merchandising Scheme was introduced and affixing the Bowls Australia logo to uniforms became mandatory, however I still get questions on the benefits to the average bowler. The CDO program is one of the major benefits to be funded from the revenue raised and one that all members can gain from either directly or indirectly through a more prosperous club environment. I wish each and every one of you a successful pennant season, but most of all good health and good bowling and I hope to see you at World Bowls.

Ivy Kluske

WAYNE'S WORLDRuediger to represent Australia at World Championships

South Australian State representative and Grange Bowling Club star, Wayne Ruediger has been named in the Australian Men’s team for the World Championships, to be held at Lockleys and

Holdfast Bay Bowling Clubs from November 24 – December 9.Wayne’s form and consistency at the Australian Sides and Super Sixes Championships caught the eye of selectors and saw him debut at the International Series at Holdfast Bay in May, where he was a Gold medalist. His success in his Australian debut and his performance at the Australian Squad Camp was enough to score him the opportunity to represent Australia at the prestigious event.Ruediger will team with Brett Wilkie and Mark Casey in the Triples and with Aron Sheriff and Casey and Wilkie in the Fours. But with Ruediger’s selection comes controversy with the omission of one of Australia’s most decorated bowlers, Nathan Rice, from the 2012 World Championship squad. Rice who is one of the country’s top ranked Singles and Pairs players, will take his place in the reserves side for the championships. Those who are unfamiliar with his form may find his selection surprising, however, in South Australia we are very familiar with the many achievements of Wayne at local and State level. National Coach, Steve Glasson, commented in the Queensland Bowler, “If we talk openly and honestly, Wayne’s selection will be the one probably questioned by the general public.” “Outside South Australia he’s probably not that well known. He’s a master of the conditions down there (in SA). He’s really been brought in for his conditions specific knowledge,” Glasson added. We encourage everyone to show their support for Wayne and the Australians and come on down to the Championships. Bowls SA wishes Wayne the best of luck and is confident that his consistent form and local green’s knowledge will be an advantage to the squad.Tickets for World Bowls are available to purchase from www.worldbowls2012.com or by calling Bowls Australia on 03 9480 7100.

BOWLS SA BOARD 2012-2013

In accordance with Clauses 26.4 and 26.5 of the Bowls SA Constitution (5 December 2011) elections for the

positions of President, Vice President, Treasurer and two Bowling Directors occurred at the Bowls SA Annual General Meeting in September.President Ivy Kluske was re-elected, Don Crosby was elected as Vice President and Treasurer John McDougall OAM was re-elected, all for a one year term. With the retirement of Metropolitan Bowling Director Bob Deuter and Country Bowling Director Valda Bartlett, Wayne Prosser, a member of Payneham and Janice (Jackie) Kelly OAM of Parndana were elected to fill these roles for a two year term. A profile of Wayne and Janice is on Page 20.Valda, Bob and out-going Vice President Carol Boyle were thanked for their tremendous contribution to the governance of the sport during their tenures. With Don Crosby still having a year of his term as Board Director - Country Male remaining, his election as Vice-President creates a casual vacancy. In accordance with Clause 26.8 the Board may appoint a fully registered Member of a Member Club to fill the vacancy until the conclusion of the term and the Board will be seeking expressions of interest from fully registered male members of country

Bowling Clubs to fill the casual vacancy. Interested members are encouraged to contact General Manager Ben Scales on 8234 7544 to discuss the role.

NEW LOOK BOWLER

A fresh new Season and a fresh new look. Over the years The SA Bowler has gone through a number of

transformations from its original male, female segregated publication to a full colour integrated magazine covering a broad range of topics.

With the sport ever changing it was again time to review the content, style and format and with this, the first issue of the 2012-13 season, we hope you find the ‘new look’ presents as an easy to read informative magazine. At Bowls SA we are always trying to ensure all facets of the sport are covered so if you have any comments or suggestions by all means contact Editor Nola Byass or Marketing Manager Jessica Taylor on 8234 7544.

Volunteer of the Year Award Nominations Open

After the successful launch of the Volunteer of the Year Award last season, the awards are back for 2012/2013 to recognise the unsung heroes who contribute to the sport in a voluntary capacity.Volunteers are the fabric that hold sporting clubs together. Without the tireless work of those

behind the scenes we would not be able to enjoy the great game of bowls.Bowls SA are looking to recognise the contributions of volunteers across South Australia.

Do you know a club member that deserves some recognition?

• Is it the greenkeeper who makes sure the green is prepared each and every week?• Maybe it is one of the hard workers in the kitchen? • Or the Club Secretary who has been doing the job without fuss for years?

Throughout the 2012/13 season Bowls SA will announce six Volunteer Awards in the SA Bowler with each winner receiving a $100 prepaid Visa card.

One of the six volunteers recognised during the season will be announced as the Volunteer of the Year at the annual Bowls SA Awards Night.

Nomination forms and more information are available at www.bowlssa.com.au

Nominations Open

In June, the Wheelchair Sports SA Lawn Bowls Team (Wombats) took on the best disabled bowlers in the

country when they participated in the National Championships at the Raymond Terrace Bowling Club, Newcastle, New South Wales. Two covered synthetic greens presented the bowlers with the opportunity for a full week of top class bowls despite the cold and continual rain. The SA contingent comprised six male bowlers and unfortunately, due to health issues their only female competitor, Mel Bussenschutt was forced to withdraw. The team was assisted by Coach Kane Coulls and two very capable helpers, Cynthia Buckley and Steve Guy.The Championships opened with the Pairs played over the first two days, and after the sectional play, Barry Charity (Rosewater) and David Bailey (Clearview) had progressed to the Quarter-final stage as winners of their section and ultimately the Semi-finals. Liam Buckley (Angaston) and Zac Guy (Balaklava) also won their section but were drawn to play the other SA pairing of Ron Colgan (Holdfast Bay) and Darryl Wilson (Clearview) who finished second in their section. In a tight game Liam and Zac prevailed eliminating the other SA pair from the competition. There was then hope that SA would have two teams in the Final but alas, that was not meant to be. While Charity and Bailey were victorious over a Victorian team featuring last year’s Singles Champion Josh Barry, Buckley and Guy were defeated by a NSW pair. The Final of the pairs saw Charity and Bailey secure their second National title as a pair with a 13-3 victory over James Reynolds and Donna Ellis.

The remaining three days of competition were dedicated to a keenly fought men’s and women’s Singles competition. In the men’s section, after sectional play, SA had three representatives in the Quarter-finals. Liam Buckley, a previous winner of the event was unfortunately knocked out by James Reynolds from NSW. After another unfortunate matching for SA, with Barry Charity drawn to meet Ron Colgan, who was making his Nationals debut in their Quarter-final, Barry came through setting up his place in the Semi-finals.In the Semis, Barry eliminated Eddie Gollan who was playing at his home club, while James Reynolds defeated last year’s Champion Josh Barry. The Final saw Barry Charity take on James Reynolds who was playing his first Nationals for some years. James was last seen at this type of event representing Australia at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester.Unfortunately for Barry and South Australia, James was just too good on the day! However, in great news for the Wombats, SA was awarded the Interstate Aggregate Championship Trophy for points accrued during sectional play as a result of all SA bowlers securing points for finishing in the top three of their respective sections in both Singles and Pairs. NSW had won this trophy for the past six years and SA’s first time win was despite not being able to secure points in the women’s section of the event. The SA team would like to acknowledge all sponsors, supporters and other members of the Wombat Squad; we wouldn’t have had such a successful Championships without you.

The Australian Blind Bowlers Association (ABBA) is currently planning to send a team to

the United Kingdom in 2013 to defend the International Trophy it won in Melbourne in 2009 when the team representatives won four Gold medals, one Silver and one Bronze.Selection and preparation of the team is under the watchful eye of our National Coach, Graeme Clements. Graeme has developed a coaching team – one coach based in each State. Bowls Australia National Coach, Steve Glasson has also been enthusiastic in his support and the preparation process. Playing in a different country with altered weather conditions on unfamiliar greens is always a challenge and part of the coaching plan is to address these issues.

Following the ABBA National Championships in May, there will be a selection training camp, with South Australians Neil Cundy, Rebecca Arbon and Glen Washington attending, after which the team of eight (four women and four men) will be selected.

Bowls Australia has contributed significant funding to the camp for which ABBA is extremely grateful. Once the team has been selected, further practice and training camps will be required before travelling to the United Kingdom in 2013. Funding for such trips is always difficult. All players are blind pensioners but will be asked to contribute about ⅓ of the costs themselves. In these hard economic times it has been difficult to obtain other sources of sponsorship. We are grateful to Bowls Australia for its recent support and we are hopeful we will receive more in the future. However, we are also writing to all Bowls Clubs seeking their financial assistance for this trip. Each Club will receive notification from the President of ABBA, John Vance, seeking your support. Any help would be gratefully received.

Further information can be obtained from ABBA Treasurer Carolyn Pettit on 08 9355 3394 or the South Australian Blind Bowls Club Secretary, Barry Henley on email [email protected] or phone 8261 6868.

2011-12

A near capacity crowd of 250 attended the prestigious annual Bowls SA Awards Night at the Festival Function Centre in May to recognise those that had excelled on and

off the green during the 2011-12 season. This year Bowls SA was honoured by the attendance of His Excellency Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce AC CSC RANR,Governor of South Australia, Patron of Bowls SA, and his wife Liz.His Excellency in addressing the gathering acknowledged that “sport plays a huge role in the Australian culture and the benefits to the community as a whole and the general wellbeing of participants is evident.Lawn Bowls is unique in being open to players of all ages, cultures and abilities and tonight’s awards acknowledge this wide cross section of contributors to the sport in South Australia. Not only do we salute those that have succeeded at the highest level, but we also recognise those whose endeavours behind the scenes allow the sport to prosper and provide opportunities for all participants to this great game.”After a dominant year on the greens, Adelaide’s Scott Thulborn was announced as the Men’s State Event Player of the Year. In one of the greatest seasons on record, Scott was undefeated in a State Event until April, winning the Open Singles, State Pairs, State Singles and defending his State Triples title. He was also a losing Semi-finalist in the Mixed Pairs event. In the Women’s State Event Player of the Year award Jackie Gardner proved that consistency was the key, with the State Triples her only victory, but Runner-up finishes in both the State Pairs and the Mixed Pairs enough to see her receive the prestigious award.Kensington/Marryatville’s Simon Dorr was recognised for his consistent form in the State colours with the State Player of the Year award, whilst Katrina Miller took out the women’s award after a breakthrough Australian Sides Championship on the Gold Coast.Port MacDonnell’s Heather Richards etched her name into the record books when she became the first member to claim all three Country Carnival disciplines in the same year and was duly recognised by being named the Women’s Country Carnival Player of the Year. No stranger to Bowls SA Award Nights, she has now claimed three Country Carnival Fours, two Singles and four Pairs titles.

The Men’s Country Carnival Player of the Year title was won by Port Elliot’s Dean Clohessy, after he qualified for the final day in both the Pairs and Fours disciplines, eventually placing equal third in both events. He was also part of the successful Fleurieu & KI Men’s Prestige Medley side and claimed a Gold Medal with good mate Bronte Smallacombe in the Men’s 55+ Pairs event of the 2011 Australian Masters Games. In the junior awards James Bodnar was announced as Henselite Junior Development Player of the Year after a breakout year, which saw him represent SA for the first time during the U18 Quad Series in January, whilst also claiming a Bronze medal in the Singles event of the U18 State Championships. His speech was a highlight of the night.Australian Representative Renee McPharlin, along with Ben Bowman took out the girl’s and boy’s Under 18 Player of the Year awards. Renee was rewarded following her Bronze medals in the Pairs and Singles at the U18 National Championships and maintains her status as one of the premier U18 female bowlers in the country. Gawler’s Bowman played a major role in winning a Silver medal in the Triples at the U18 National Championships with Jono Voigt and Luke Brind. He secured this award with Gold in the blue ribbon Boys’ Singles event at the U18 State Championships. In the other awards announced on the night Stephanie Simms was named as Coach of the Year following her hard work with coaching disabled bowlers through the SASRAPID program, which included coaching players at numerous National Disability Carnivals and Championships where her participants claimed a number of medals. Clearview’s Ian Bailey was awarded the APIA Volunteer of the Year award following his long term commitment to Wheelchair Sports, both with the South Australian and National Associations. As Secretary of the Abattoirs Bowling Club, he made a significant contribution to the successful merger of the Clearview and Abattoirs Clubs in 1998, going on to become heavily involved in the administration of the Clearview Club and being recognised with an Australian Government Sports Achievement Award for Sports Administrators in 2008.The Awards Night is now the premier event for the sport and an opportunity to recognise not only the great skills of players but the quiet achievers off the green whose efforts ensure that the sport will continue to prosper for future generations.

Like most Bowling Clubs in South Australia my home club McLaren Vale is looking towards a positive

future and the off-season has given our Board time to evaluate where we are and where we want to be in five years and beyond. During July we were fortunate to sit with Bowls Australia Community Development Officer Mark Easton in our clubrooms as we looked at issues that would affect our membership in the future. We are entering our 75th year as a Club and having an independent observer looking from the outside in was a great experience. Bowls is a traditional sport and it is easy to accept the status quo but the reality is that we, like so many others, are looking to increase membership and offer our community a vibrant club that includes facilities which are family friendly and relevant. Our time with Mark proved to be invaluable and it is worthwhile looking at the position of Community Development Officer and how it can offer us support.Easton, who comes from a background in the SANFL membership area was employed in October 2011 and is based in Clarendon in Adelaide’s south. Along with Waikerie’s Richard Law his brief is to assist clubs, 110 each, in the formation of ideas which will give a viable base while ensuring longevity for each operation. There is no doubt that the leisure industry is large and to guarantee success we need to be proactive and when asked what the keys were he made the following comments:“The key word is longevity and we need to look at changes within clubs that will facilitate that. Rather than just a Bowling Club we should be looking at how we can become a Community Centre as well. Any grants that are available, and there are many, are based on membership numbers and we try to get Clubs to think of social membership as an important aspect of this. We need to ask ourselves the important question. Do we have to be a bowler to become a member here?”Richard Law, the second Bowls

Australia Community Development Officer working within South Australia is based in Waikerie and when I spoke to him he expanded on his role.“Between Mark and myself we put in an enormous amount of kilometres and in many ways our position is different from the CDO’s in other States. The area that we cover is extensive and while those working interstate return home every night having met with a range of clubs, we can travel the same distance and meet with one club. While Mark covers the 53 Metropolitan clubs, the Hills, Fleurieu and the South East areas I look after the Riverland, Barossa, Mid-North, Gulf Ranges, Port Augusta, Whyalla, Eyre Peninsula and the Yorke Peninsula.“ Both Easton and Law are passionate about their role within the bowling community and there is no doubt that the impact they will have on the sport in our State will be far reaching. In the early days yearly subs were the main financial input that sustained each club throughout the year. The subs collected each year in this day and age do not have the same impact and Law made the following comments.“What key members of Boards need to realise is that they need to run their clubs as a business. They are Business Managers and require a strong business plan and a succession plan for future committees to ensure continuity.”With memberships in bowling clubs virtually halving since 1985 membership numbers is the most important issue that faces us all. Now on their second round of visits to Clubs their focus is working with the Club administrators to prepare a Club Health Check. Mark and Richard have, so far, completed 40 each and this information will be vital in determining strategies for each Club’s sustainability.

A recent assessment by Bowls Australia showed that each CDO across Australia had, on average, visited 178 Clubs since inception of the program nine months ago. It is testament to the commitment of Mark and Richard that they have recorded 270 and 295 Club and Region visits respectively, each travelling over 42,000 kms, and involving long hours. Despite long hours and prohibitive kilometres Mark Easton and Richard Law continue to spread the word and if our experience at McLaren Vale Bowling Club is anything to go by both are well versed in what is required to give our clubs that longevity.

After two years of dramatic movement of players during the off-season one would have expected a more

stable entry into the Bowls SA Premier One competitions in season 2012/13. Nothing could be further from the truth with a number of high profile players again moving to new Clubs over the last two months. As the merry-go-round continues bowlers from all Clubs are on the training track in preparation for what will be another interrupted year as World Bowls 2012 takes centre stage in Adelaide.

PREMIER ONE SATURDAY COMPETITIONAdelaide: After a dramatic Premier One Saturday Pennant win from fourth spot last season a buoyant Adelaide combination will be looking to go on with the good work this year. It is always difficult to back up a Grand Final win the following year but there is a hard core of incredibly talented bowlers who have proven that they can work as a team and most of the winning outfit will be returning for another crack this season. In: Hank Pelgrim (Edwardstown), Justin Colvil (Happy Valley)Out: Sandy Wallace (Holdfast Bay)

Marion: There is no doubt that those in Hurricane territory suffered dreadfully after a second consecutive Grand Final defeat last year and Rex Whitehead’s words “I’m sick of coming second” will still be resounding in the ears of team mates as Marion enters what will be an important year. The promotion of the Club’s second side to Premier Two South will see the Hurricanes field teams in the top two divisions and this will surely help

selectors as the Club looks to go one better this year. A major plus for the Club is the availability of State representative Ashley Klose for the entire season. Last year “Cougar” was committed to the NSW Premier League and as a consequence missed many Pennant games in Adelaide but if one looks at his impact, when he was on the track for the Hurricanes, his presence and competitiveness will be a major plus in 2012/13. In: NilOut: Colin Saltmarsh (Modbury)

Grange: The Dolphin playing group will look back on season 2011/12 as the one that got away. Perfectly set up with the first day of the finals at home, Grange went out in straight sets going down to Marion and Adelaide by a total of three shots in what was a major surprise. Once again this year we would expect Grange to be the team to beat and the playing group will be hell bent on a Premier One flag in season 2012/13. You can bet that the Club will be in the mix the entire year and the news is good with Marc Evans over his injury problems and ready to go. One to keep an eye out for is experienced Skip Duane Edwards who had a sensational second half of 2011/12. In: NilOut: Nil

Ascot Park: Despite a season of ups and downs the Lions could well have ended last year with a Premier One Pennant. In the first Semi-final at Grange the Club went down by a single shot to eventual champion Adelaide and could easily have won the game twice in the final end. The first half of season 2011/12 brought out the best and the worst that Ascot Park has

to offer and Coach Dave Stockham will be looking for his playing group to come out firing from game one. An inability to consistently get bowls on the head saw the team unable to stitch two wins together early but a much more consistent second half almost set up an unlikely result on the final weekend of the year. The loss of former international Ian Taylor will obviously have some impact but be prepared for another bold performance from a side that has so much ability but has often under-achieved in the past. As a bonus the Club will have Kiwi international Shannon McIllroy on deck for the Pennant games up until World Bowls. McIllroy is young, fit and competitive; just the type of player who can impact early in the season.

Expect another good year from this talented outfit. In: Shannon McIllroy (Nelson, NZ), Craig Mills (Holdfast Bay), Steve Tarr (Lockleys), Danny Deed (Edwardstown), Mark Afford (Edwardstown), Randal Callaghan (Aldinga), Mike Cotton (Holdfast Bay) Out: Nil

Modbury: One of two newly promoted Clubs, Modbury Thunder entered last season’s Premier One competition with the aim of retaining its colour but a series of excellent performances early in the season saw them achieve much more than that. Despite missing out on the finals after a defeat to Adelaide in the last minor round game of the year we rated the Thunder as one of the teams of the year. Perhaps the Club was one elite bowler short of a top four side but the pick-up of State representatives Simon Dorr and Colin Saltmarsh in the off-season will see the Club go into season 2012/13 with great confidence and a potent top end. If one asks those close to the State side to rate Dorr they will tell you that he was the player of the series against Victoria last year and followed up with a similar rating after the National Sides Championships in Queensland. As with last year the Club has teams in the top two divisions. Well organised and competitive, the playing group will have reset their aims and it would be a brave person who would back against a Finals appearance this time around. Expect the Thunder to make the Finals. In: Simon Dorr (Kensington/Marryatville), Colin Saltmarsh (Marion), Craig Ettridge (Ceduna)Out: Nil

Payneham: After an amazing season in 2011/12 when, prior to Christmas an under strength side achieved results beyond its expectations, the Panthers hung on in the second half to record enough points to hold its spot in Premier One for this year. With the Club’s complex fully operational going into this Pennant season it will be interesting to see how the selectors and playing group approach season 2012/13. You can bet that they will be hard to roll early on the carpet greens at home but at the elite level a perceived home ground advantage is often a catalyst which drives visiting teams. It is difficult to predict what is going to happen in Panther country but we know that the Club will produce some high quality performances over the year and any team which goes into a game against Payneham expecting an easy game will undoubtedly pay the price. In: NilOut: Nil

Lockleys: After an excellent year in 2010/11 the Eagles playing group obviously missed the influence of Peter Gageler last season. For much of the year the Club struggled to get a competitive and cohesive team on the green and the loss of Ben Johnson and Steve Tarr both who Skipped rinks in 2011/12 could well see the Eagles enter 2012/13 with an understrength outfit. Lockleys Bowling Club is in its Centenary year and is also one of two Clubs to host World Bowls 2012 and both of these situations will either be a catalyst for an excellent year or a distraction that will be in the collective minds of the playing group. It will be up to the playing group to go into October in the right frame of mind. In: NilOut: Ben Johnson (Salisbury), Steve Tarr (Ascot Park), Ron Turnbull (Barossa)

West Lakes: For much of the second half of last year the Lakers were in a dog fight with Kensington/Marryatville as both Clubs fought to retain a spot in Premier One for season 2012/13. In the final analysis West Lakes prevailed with a home win over Marion in the last minor round game of the year and Mark Haines and the playing group will go into this season hoping for a good start and more competitive performances in key games. The inclusion of James Gregory from Round One will add some experience and Haines will be

looking to the more experienced members of his group to stand up early. In: NilOut: NilHawthorn: For so much of last year Hawthorn flew under the radar in the Premier Two South competition and in the end it was a steely quiet resolve and great planning that carried the playing group to the flag. Packed with experienced Premier One bowlers it is hard to understand why so many pundits didn’t rate them but you can bet that the Hawks enjoyed the emphasis that was placed on the likes of Edwardstown, Brighton and Holdfast Bay during the year. Hawthorn returns to the elite competition after one year in the second tier and will go into season 2012/13 with a similar team and the same resolve. They will definitely be Premier One ready and will ask the question of more high profile Clubs on the way through. Expect a competitive year from the Hawks. In: Jake Golding (South East)Out: Nil

Rosewater: This year Rosewater will enter the Premier One competition for the first time in the Club’s history and they will be a welcome addition to the elite ranks. When one talks to President Steve Thompson there is a definite sound of excitement in his voice and why wouldn’t there be. His Club will take the same playing group which won last year’s Premier Two North Grand Final into the new season and you can bet that they will be a hit in striking uniforms with the word “Shrike” emblazoned on the back. In: NilOut: Nil

PREMIER ONE THURSDAY COMPETITIONOnce again Prospect-Broadview and Modbury will be the teams to beat in the Premier One Thursday competition. The powerful Prospect-Broadview combination pickeduplastseason’sflaggivingtheClubback to back titles but you can bet that the girls from the north will be going all out to reverse the result this year. Former powerhouse Grange will return to the competition after three years in the second tier and the Club has recruited well in the off-season. Gawler is the second promoted Club to enter the elite level in 2012/13 and one wonders if a home ground advantage will play a major role, particularly in the early rounds.

It is not surprising that Prospect-Broadview will go into this season with an unchanged team. The Club has never been one to make change for change sake and again they will be the team to beat.Modbury has been in seven successive Grand Finals and perhaps this year they canagaintakethatelusiveflag.AvrilNeillis taking a year off and Liz Gooda, formerly from Ascot Park, has joined the Modbury side.Jody Kraguljec and Dawn Lilley are both returning to Kensington/Marryatville after time with Payneham, however the Club will be feeling the considerable loss of Penny Landherr to Tranmere. In other changes Marion has lost Deanna Amos to Grange and Sue Parkin to Holdfast Bay and Payneham has gained Sonya Coultas from Beaumont and Gabbie Nixon from Clearview. Lockleys have picked up Mary O’Neil from Henley and Maxine Savage of West Lakes, while well-known member Di Green is out due to injury and former West Lakes members Dianne Field, Jan Linde and Ursula Hollis have moved to Grange.

Simon Dorr will play for Modbury in Season 2012/13

Page 18: SA Bowler Magazine September 2012

Just prior to the 1984/85 season 34 year old Jeff Davis walked into the Modbury Bowling Club with a

view to sign up for his first season of lawn bowls. It was the closest club to his home in Ingle Farm and seemed to be the obvious choice, but to his dismay he found that Modbury’s books were full and so he ended up joining Clearview instead. It is the sort of story we may never read again. The thought of any bowling club turning away new members appears ridiculous but it was the mid 80s and the sport of bowls was flourishing in South Australia. However, from 1985 to the present day club membership throughout the country has all but halved and at 61 years old with a wonderful record Davis could now take up membership at the club of his choice. During the mid-1980’s wife Sandra and eight year old daughter Deanne spent most weekends involved in calisthenics and with son Brett then three years old it was time for Jeff to take up a sport. His young son spent much of his time watching his father playing both indoor bias and lawn bowls that he would go on

to take up the sport aged 10. Over the years Jeff has picked up 15 club titles including Singles, Pairs and Fours and has also been successful in State events including Men’s Singles, Open Singles, Metropolitan Singles, Men’s Fours and Metropolitan Fours. It is an impressive record on the greens and after leaving Clearview he spent 10 years at Salisbury Bowling Club before transferring to Adelaide where he would spend the following decade bowling at the elite level. Needing a rest from the sport he decided to give the game away for a year and after 12 months on the side-line the highly respected bowler finally joined Modbury Bowling Club in 2010, 25 years after his initial approach.Impressive as his playing record is Jeff has also won accolades as an Umpire and Marker in major events and 2012 will bring with it two new challenges in these important areas. Davis gained his first National Umpires qualification during season 1986/87 and has been an Umpire ever since, but this year will be different to most others as among many, including a talented group of

South Australians, he will be on the world stage as a Marker and Umpire at World Bowls 2012. It won’t be the first time that he has officiated at the Olympics of bowls and it is worthwhile relating the following story from Lockleys Bowling Club in 1996. “I remember that the first game I marked was on the TV rink” Davis commented. “I was so nervous that on the first end as I was walking down the green holding up the lollypops, I realised that I was holding up the wrong colour. However, despite that it was a great experience and the crowds were huge but I wonder after so many years of seeing bowls on TV, whether the crowds will be as good at the next World Bowls to be held in November and December this year. I hope so!” In November 2011 the Asia Pacific Championships were held at Lockleys and Holdfast Bay Bowling Clubs but to be considered as an Umpire or Marker the controlling body, World Bowls, insisted on all officials holding an International Technical Officers accreditation. It is the highest level there

is and entitles ITOs to officiate at bowls championships anywhere in the World. With the Asia Pacific Championships and World Bowls 2012 in mind a group of South Australia bowlers interested in officiating at the highest level attended training sessions conducted by Bowls Australia’s Mark Cowan and Bowls SA’s Beth Young over some months before sitting theory and practical examinations. Davis was among 20 successful South Australian applicants who joined a further 16 ITOs from around Australia to officiate at the Asia Pacific Championships. While playing at the Australian Open at Darebin in February 2012 Davis was told that ITOs from Australia were travelling to Cyprus to officiate at the World Singles Champion of Champion titles during October of this year. It seemed that this would be too good an opportunity to miss and so he forwarded his details

and waited for a reply. During the SA International in May, Mark Cowan spoke of the upcoming event and offered to forward Davis’ information to Cyprus. The same night an email arrived from the tournament organiser with an invitation to officiate at the 2012 Champion of Champions event to be held at Athena Beach Hotel in Pathos. A flight out on October 19 will see him arrive in time to prepare for the tournament which will run

from the 20 – 28 October. There will be little time to relax on his return to Adelaide as Davis has also been selected with nine others to

officiate at the World Bowls finals in December. Umpiring and Marking are important and necessary components within our sport and we wish Jeff Davis well as he enters an important five weeks of his bowling life.

It would be difficult to imagine a major sport in any State of Australia operating without the support of

a vibrant local Association. Major sporting codes in general have their own State governing body and a National Association which administers the game at the Australian level. Lawn bowls is no different and over eleven decades many hard working South Australian bowlers and administrators have given their time freely as Board members of the RSABA, SAWBA and in later years Bowls SA. At the Bowls SA AGM in September two new Board members were elected for a two year term and there is no doubt that both will bring a lot to the table as our State body moves forward and Wayne Prosser (Payneham Bowling Club) and Janice Kelly OAM (Parndana Bowling Club) are well equipped for the role they will play in furthering the sport in South Australia. One can’t fail to be impressed with the CV of Janice Kelly OAM. From an early age “Jackie” as she is known to fellow bowlers has been involved in

her local community in wide ranging

areas including the Kangaroo Island Development Board, the Kangaroo Island Council on Tourism and a member of the Ministerial Review Group for the delivery of education on the Island to mention just a few. Janice has also held the position of Mayor for the former District Council of Kingscote and then following amalgamation she became Mayor of Kangaroo Island. In 2002 she was awarded an Order of Australia Medal for services to the Kangaroo Island community and to Local Government. In 2003 Janice became a member of the Parndana Bowling Club and has played an active role in supporting the Club ever since. As well as holding the position of Tournament Officer she has been a member of the Club Management Committee and played an important part in updating the constitution to meet Bowls SA requirements. The President of the Kangaroo Island Women’s Bowling Association in 2009/10 and 2011/12, she is also serving her second year as President of the Parndana Women’s Club. An accredited Umpire and Coach she took up the position of Assistant

Councillor for Region 7 in 2011 and in May this year this appointment was extended for a further two years. When I spoke to Janice she made the following comments: “I believe my greatest strengths are being able to listen, to communicate and to work towards outcomes that are beneficial to the members/community and organisation within which I work. I look forward to working towards the betterment of bowls for members in whatever capacity I am able to do.”I have known Payneham’s Wayne Prosser for some years and have been fortunate to have weekly contact with him during the Metropolitan Pennant season each year in his capacity as Panther Club spokesman. If I had to describe Wayne in two words they would be “professional” and “humble” and there is never any doubt of his passion for our sport and his support of those around him. This year Wayne goes into his fourth year as Club President and it is a measure of the man that having been involved over a hard two year period in the restructure of his Club’s

new complex, which is now complete, he is ready and prepared to bring his extraordinary talents to the Board of Bowls SA. Wayne grew up on a fruit block in the small town of Mypolonga on the Murray River where, working with his father, he also learned about growing chickens and farm management. He put these skills to good use whilst owning and self-managing a sheep and cattle grazing property on Kangaroo Island and then with senior management roles with Ingham Enterprises, Manos Poultry and Steggles in Adelaide and Sydney. Wayne then went back into self-employment and successfully operated his own poultry business.Wayne had a great love of cricket and spent 15 years at the Kensington Cricket Club and during this time he led their District “A” Grade team to two Premierships as Captain/Coach. Lawn Bowls beckoned however, and Wayne has been a member of Payneham for 12 years and, prior to that, Burnside RSL and Toorak/Burnside and was President at Burnside RSL when the

Club merged with Toorak. When asked about his new position on the Board of Bowls SA he made the following comments: “I feel humbled to be elected as Metro Male Director to the Board of Bowls SA. We are clearly facing challenging times in bowls, and I am sure that the pressures we all feel at

club level, are similar to the issues that face the Board. I sincerely hope that I will represent you with careful consideration and fairness with my judgment.”We wish Janice and Wayne all the best and thank them for their support of South Australian bowls.

GREENKEEPERSNigel Ryan

Spring is in the air and we all get a little excited because the new season is all but upon us.I’m amazed how times have changed since

beginning my time on the greens in 1993. Who would have thought trial games would commence in late August. This is just one of the challenges the modern day greenkeeper faces as the battle for supremacy in the local bowls community invigorates us all. It must be said though this is a precarious time of year as a whole season of bowls looms ahead for our greens and ‘greenies’ can get a little sensitive about traffic on dormant, or semi-dormant couch with little or no chance of recovery. Play during adverse weather in late winter/early spring can literally decimate a greens health very rapidly and if not will keep the plant dormant for longer. In my opinion “pace” shouldn’t be a high priority at this time of year and encouraging the grass out of dormancy by not “over doing it” is of high importance during a “high risk” period such as Spring. Considering the pennant season is still weeks away care must be taken not to put too much pressure too soon on the greens and a good balance of decision making must occur. Any renovation to the surface is a disturbance to the running surface which needs to repair itself and if the plant cannot recover because it hasn’t the energy reserves due to still feeling the effects of dormancy, health will undoubtedly decline including the high possibility of the onset of disease. It is important, especially considering the cold winter we’ve experienced, to take things slowly at this time of year, to allow the turf to recover. A good principle for Spring is ‘baby steps’ i.e. don’t over feed, don’t over renovate, don’t cut too short, etc. After all you can’t undo what you’ve done once you’ve over done it but you can always do it again if you’ve under done it. This theory obviously doesn’t apply once the turf is actively growing. A lot of ‘greenies’ are already booking their laser levelling for the extended break in December, however for some Clubs night owls continues through this period which means greenkeepers need to liaise with the Club Committee on promoting and maintaining good quality greens which will sustain intense loadings for summer and winter use, if necessary. Major renovations can be seen as an inconvenience to a Club particularly when the greens are being used to maximise income but if renovations are not carried out the quality of the greens will decline. Therefore the short term inconvenience of 4-6 weeks can in the long term allow longer periods of play. If not done the greens can be out of play for longer periods due to symptoms such as lack of drainage, intense disease relating to thatch issues and a lack of coverage all which can ultimately lead to an exodus of members due to less

than desirable greens. Good greens can undoubtedly contribute to

a good club atmosphere, not to mention create a great deal of income therefore keeping in mind short and long term goals investing in renovations, both minor and major is crucial. On a personal note I have been inspired by the two Bowls SA Field Days that the South Australian Bowling Greenkeepers Association has been involved in at Ardrossan and Lameroo. The general interest shown by attendees and the conversations that we have been involved with at these days only proves how much we all value our natural turf greens and aspire to have our greens to their best by utilising “best practice” methods. While our website is still building our aim is to improve membership numbers in a proactive move to unite as a professional industry which is genuinely concerned for the future of the grass greens and their greenkeepers.I urge all clubs to join their greenkeepers to share in some of the educational and social support that we can offer. Australia now has an all-natural, sweet-tasting super fruit drink that can help reduce pain

and inflammation in your body. So powerful it is listed with the TGA as an oral medicine.Reduced pain and inflammation could lead to an improvement in movement and flexibility, without the pain, allowing you to enjoy the game of bowls and other daily activities.

TriVita’s Nopalea is a delicious wellness solution containing a rare and potent class of antioxidants called Bioflavonoids, found in the Nopal cactus growing in the Sonoran Desert in North America. The Nopal cactus has been used by the Pima Indians for thousands of years to promote health and wellbeing. Taking Nopalea daily can help your body:

• reduce inflammation• detoxify• achieve optimal cellular

healthChronic inflammation causes too many people to suffer from various health problems such as:• muscle, joint and bone

inflammation – causing ongoing body pain

• respiratory inflammation – causing allergies

• arterial inflammation – causing heart problems

• digestive tract inflammation – causing gas, bloating and cramps

• widespread body cell inflammation – causing overall fatigue

Hello, my name is Andrew Mockridge, a forty something father of 2 living in Adelaide and I would like to tell you how this amazing, all natural cactus juice has helped me and over 750,000 other people suffering pain and inflammation. After 20 + years in the landscaping industry I ended up with lower back pain which was interfering with my sleep and daily life. After four weeks drinking Nopalea I was sleeping through the night and my back pain had reduced by a conservative 80%. Three months on, there is next to no back pain, I feel energized and so much more alive. Other improvements I have noticed are my breathing and fitness level. Power walks 1.8kms uphill had me puffing and panting, with regular stops to catch my breath. Pushing myself I would average 22 minutes up this hill but now I am walking this track 6 minutes faster than before with no stopping, my breathing is deeper and more controlled and

when I reach the top my recovery time is a lot quicker than before.Call Andrew on 0411 88 5863 for a special online offer and get started on the 30 day wellness challenge. BLUESKY HEALTHCARE OVER 60s STATE SIDE SELECTEDFor the first time, Bowls SA will have teams participating in the Over 60s National Championships to be held at Queanbeyan Bowling Club, ACT from 15-19 October. This is an exciting opportunity and we wish the selected players every success.Following trials at Rosewater Bowling Club, Selectors Errol Bungey, Geoff Nethercott, Ann Kennedy, Valda Bartlett and Denise Amos named the South Australian teams:

EMERGING PLAYERS’ SQUAD MILDURAIt is pleasing to report that our Emerging Players’ Squad were successful in Mildura with the men showing the Victorians a clean set of

heels and winning four tests to two. What was even more pleasing was the performance of the under 25 players within the team, aided by the steadying influence of the more experienced players. The women had a hard fought shots victory over an experienced Victorian outfit and again our youngish team performed well under pressure on the last day to grab victory. The group was supported by Coach, Lynton Modra, Carol Boyle as Team Manager and Riina Bradbrook as observer and the men well supported by Trevor Lloyd and Paul Craig. This event, and what it provides for Selectors and player development, is an extremely important fixture in the High Performance program.

STATE SQUADSA trial against the Emerging Players’ Squad on Sunday, September 16 and a series of training sessions is being utilised to prepare the State Squads for an exciting opportunity when on 24, 25 and 26 of October the Squads will play the New Zealand national team at Lockleys Bowling Club.

HALLETT COVE MINI-OLYMPIC DAY

The Hallett Cove Prime Minister’s Olympic Challenge mini-Olympic Day held at the Cove Sports and

Community Club was held on Sunday, September 2. The day was set up as a yellow brick road, with children able to move between stations and ‘have a go’ at the different sports. The Lawn Bowls station was staffed by coaches from

the local Henselite Junior Development

Squad, the Southern Jacka Crackas, and Bowls SA utilising the Krak-a-Jak mats

for an exciting series of drills and the New

Age bowls for the smaller children.Participants were given flyers with contact information for the Southern Jacka Crackas, as well as the local Bowling Clubs. The response from the participating children and their parents was outstanding, with approximately 100 children taking part in the sporting activities, and many parents keen to try the lawn bowls activities as well.

COACHING UPDATEWinter has been busy for coaches, with two Club Coaching Courses, one Introductory Coaching Course and a Coaching Reaccreditation day being run by Bowls SA.From these courses there are now 21 new Club Coaches, 10 new Introductory Coaches and nine active Reaccredited Coaches.Bowls Australia have also recently released the Selection Module and Competition Module and the workshop dates for South Australia will be announced soon. Please keep an eye on our website www.bowlssa.com.au for further details. The workshops are open to players, committee members, selectors and other interested members and you do not need to be an accredited coach to participate. An Advanced Coaching Course was also run in South Australia for the first time by Bowls Australia in September at the West Lakes Bowling Club. The Course, which ran over four days, provided an opportunity for coaches from South Australia and Western Australia to receive instruction from

experienced coaches and experts from a variety of sports and across a range of topics including skill acquisition, sports psychology, physiology, coaching processes, sports nutrition, fault recognition, as well a session by National Coach Steve Glasson on the national High Performance program and his coaching philosophy. The South Australian attendees at the course, Penny Landherr, Lynton Modra, Terry White, Erin Haines, Mark Haines, Harvey Jolly and Gary Davies, found the course extremely beneficial and the knowledge gained will no doubt assist them in their varied coaching roles.Participants having a go at Bowls

CHANGES TO STATE EVENTS

Following the Bowls SA Council Meeting on Monday 2 July, changes were adopted relating

to Bowls SA State Events, including the Country Carnivals and Prestige Medleys. Minor changes affecting the upcoming 2012/13 season revolve around Country Carnival catering and the necessity for country Members to qualify for Bowls SA State Events through their Region, when a regional event is held.

MARCH LONG WEEKENDThe major change for 2012/13 sees the Prestige Medleys and Schroeter/Kennedy/Under 18 Shields increase from a three day event to a five day extravaganza. The Women’s Prestige Medley will commence proceedings on Thursday 7 March whilst the Men’s event will

conclude the March Long Weekend on Monday 11 March. This exciting change now enables all five days of

competition to be held at the

same venue, creating a great opportunity for a Member Club to play host. Tender

documents were sent out in early August, giving every Member Club a chance to apply to host the events, with the deadline being September 30. The individual Controlling Body will be responsible for making any necessary changes to mid-week pennant competitions affected by the Thursday start of the Women’s Prestige Medley.

COUNTRY ROUND ROBINS & COUNTRY CARNIVAL FINAL DAYSIn another significant change, Bowls SA has given the opportunity to any metropolitan Member Club to detail their ability to meet the essential and desirable criteria to host the above events. Following a successful tender, two individual Member Clubs will be selected to host all four days of the Men’s or Women’s Country Round Robin, along with the Final day of the gender specific Country Carnival. This provides a great opportunity for particular Member Clubs to show off their Club to the cream of country Bowls in SA over a prolonged period of time. To clarify, this tender process for hosting rights has no effect on the Preliminary Rounds of the Men’s and Women’s Country Carnival, where Member Clubs have still been provisionally allocated rinks for Sectional and Knockout rounds.

MATCH & PROGRAM COMMITTEEThe Bowls SA Match & Program Committee has been working tirelessly during the off season, getting prepared for Season 2012/13.

A change this season sees Geoff Nethercott come onto the committee as Chair, whilst Women’s State Side stalwarts Riina Bradbrook and Janet Cocks have joined the committee. Bowls SA would like to acknowledge the past work and dedication of out-going Chair Ron Mulliner and members Ann Kennedy, Lesley Slattery and Bob Deuter, and wish them well with their future endeavours.

OVER 60’S STATE EVENTSBy the time of this edition goes to print, the first Over 60’s event for 2012/13 will have been run and won, with the event at Payneham on Friday 14 September reaching maximum capacity. Bowls SA and Member Clubs will be working together over the coming months to hold a minimum of three additional events. The Grange Bowling Club is hosting the next event on Wednesday 12 December; the format of the day is an ‘Any Combination Open Medley’. Entries can be accepted by contacting Bowls Operations Manager Rhys Taylor on 8234 7544 or email [email protected] or the Grange Bowling Club. Members striving to represent their State at a National Over 60’s level are encouraged to enter a team, as selectors will be using these local events for selection for the 2013 National Over 60’s series.

Lifting the LidLifting the Lid

latest news and information about your sport

Welcome to the latest edition of ‘Lifting The Lid’. On an ongoing basis,

Bowls Australia, the nation’s governing body for lawn bowls, will provide the wider community with an in-depth look at the issues currently facing the sport. In this month’s edition we examine some exciting new initiatives Bowls Australia has recently developed to promote and further the coaching standards of our sport nationally.I trust you will find it informative.

Neil DalrympleBowls Australia CEO

COMPETITION & SELECTION MODULES

After consultation with national coach Steve Glasson OAM, the high performance team and state/territory associations, Bowls Australia is pleased to have recently released the next level of the coach accreditation structure – the Selection and Competition Modules. The modules provide the next step in the pathway for bowls coaches in Australia and also serve the additional purpose of providing valuable education to players and

coaches nationwide. The Selection Module is designed for club coaches, selectors and others who are keen to ensure their club has best practice selection standards. Coaches should attend this workshop to learn more about the benchmarking of players which can assist with selection. Selectors and committee members should attend this workshop to learn how to create a selection policy and a healthy philosophy for their club. The Competition Module focuses on the aspects of competitive bowls. Coaches should attend this workshop to gain further information on how to best prepare players for competition, where to find the laws of the sport and conditions of play and understand how to educate players to focus on what they can control. The workshop contains practical on green elements where players can discover what their own shot timeline is and how best to collect statistics. You do not need to be an accredited coach to attend a workshop – it’s open to players, committee members, selectors and other interested persons. Contact your state/territory coaching committee or CDO to find out when the modules will be conducted in your area.

ADVANCED COACH

In addition, Bowls Australia is excited about the implementation of the Advanced Coach accreditation. Each four-day course covers topics such as knowing your own coaching style, coaching philosophy, how to plan your program and how to teach, observe and provide feedback

to your players are all key components throughout coach preparation. Player preparation covers how players acquire skills, how to analyse movement, the principles of physiology and working with a player’s mental ability. The course is conducted face to face with topics delivered by experts in their field and costs $500 for coaches who are recognised by the state/territory association or $1000 if they are not recognised. The Advanced Coach accreditation is ideally suited to coaches who STA’s believe will provide valuable coaching experience to the STA at a premier league club, development squad, zone/group/district and state level. This may include coaches who are currently coaching at a zone/group/district level coaches, state junior coaches, state assistant coaches, premier level pennant clubs and development squad coaches. Contact your state/territory association to express your interest, or visit bowlsaustralia.com.au

Unbiased Opinion

BOWLING ALONG

All of us use motor vehicles in one sense or another even if it is just avoiding them,

as a pedestrian. Country bowlers would not even think twice about the kilometres they travel in the course of that activity. It is the most regulated activity that we indulge in, although we would not realise it. The extent of that regulation only really matters when something goes wrong. As a community, our parliament has for many years now, decided the use of a motor vehicle is a privilege, not a right, a concept with which I agree. Respect for the use of the motor vehicle from a very early age, is to be firmly encouraged. It is such an important issue to the community, that (along with every other jurisdiction in Australia) it is appropriate enough to set up compensation funds to deal with the myriad of injuries that occur through the use of a vehicle. The right to compensation arising out of the use of a motor vehicle arises from negligent use of a vehicle. Compensating victims is only one aspect of the right. The other is to deter negligent behaviour in the future, a worthy aim of the common law system.Currently the government is reviewing whether entitlements to damages arising as a result of a collision should be maintained for quite a large number of the community who will suffer injuries in

the future. This is a topic for another day.The point of this article is to illustrate the significance of the motor vehicle and the highly regulated use of it. Cause death by dangerous driving charges are amongst the most usual and emotive charges that can arise. Commonly, this type of offending is the one which reaches most widely into the community. An error of judgment, too much to drink, driving too fast, failing to take due regard of a situation, result in ordinary citizens appearing before courts on serious charges. The tragedy evolves from the death or serious injury to those in the vehicles at the time of the incident. Victim Impact Statements from family members are heart-wrenching. No one intended to take a life or to cause an injury. An error of judgement is all it takes. We punish those who were driving at the time with significant penalties including jail.Jail penalties can wreck your life. You can lose your job. You can lose your family. You can lose your finances. It has even caused our parliament to radically change a law which no longer requires any intent, just the degree of injury which you caused, on which a mandatory six month disqualification will follow together with a mandatory jail sentence, which can be suspended in cases of driving without due care.Drink driving laws have harsh penalties. Despite the common misconception, there is no ability to obtain a conditional licence to travel to and from work whilst subject to your disqualification. Those days disappeared in 1990. The road safety message has been clear. Drink and drive, and you put at risk many of those matters you take for granted in your life. The level of 0.05 is not hard to achieve. Make sure there is a skipper as driver particularly after events where alcohol is consumed. In its zealous law and order approach, the government has even deemed you lose your licence even before you have a hearing as to

whether you are guilty of the offence of drink driving. Expiation notices are the way the government conducts its regulatory work in trying to save costs and to deal with matters expediently. As guardians of the communities rights and freedoms, lawyers and Law Societies have to be vigilant against such legislation but ultimately it is a matter for parliament. The fines, probationary licences, mandatory alco-lock systems upon returning to driving after a serious drink driving matter are all features of the system drivers are subject. When questioned by police, you have to give your name and address and also whether you were the driver of the vehicle at a certain time. The latter is erosion to the right to silence which parliament has deemed to be an appropriate concession in the context of the use of a motor vehicle, its importance and its impact on the lives of its citizens. Of all the areas of law where you are going to come into contact with offending, use of a motor vehicle is the most likely. Rules of use are complex. You would be wise to get advice before paying expiation notices, not only in relation to demerit points but in relation to other matters as well. In driving offences confiscation of property can be an issue, including the family car.So be cautious with the use of a motor vehicle and be conscious of the privilege which the State allows. Let us hope that they are as conscious and respectful of the right to claim damages as a very important component of that usage. In that regard only time will tell. Meanwhile, I suspect we will all keep bowling along.

New Green at KingscoteEight years ago the Kingscote BC members accepted that their facilities were lacking in many ways. For years the Club put funds aside for these major renovations, however the amount required for the upgrade was substantial and presented a huge challenge for a small club of only 60 members.A ray of hope emerged when the maximum funding for the ORS Community Recreation and Sport Facilities Program was increased and an application proved successful. In the grant application the Club had committed to a considerable amount of in-kind work but as the project progressed

CLUB & REGIONAL NEWS FROM ACROSS THE STATEmore and more members became actively involved. Pavers were donated, shelters erected and another group of members volunteered to level the top grass green resulting in a perfectly true green. The new facilities, opened by the Member for Finniss, the Hon Michael Pengilly, are a dream come true for the members. An enlarged clubroom, a totally refitted kitchen, a new toilet block with a disabled toilet and a new synthetic green to accompany the excellent grass green. In total Club members put into this project in excess of 1,200 hours of volunteer labour; an outstanding achievement.

REGION 9 Olympic Spirit at ClearviewThe Clearview BC and some visiting players got a taste of the recent London Olympic Games when they held a Bowlympic Games Day.The clubhouse was decorated with the Olympic Rings and flags from various countries with the 24 teams entered assigned to play for a specific country. At the completion of the games winners mounted the dais and were presented with Gold, Silver and Bronze medals as the Olympic theme played in the background.Gold Medal winners were Jeff Gamlen, Ken Sleeman, Clive Adsett and Dave Bailey who represented the International Paralympic Committee.Silver went to Spain represented by Jack and Doreen Bruton, John White and Peter Gray and France competitors Dave Goodenough, Pat McGuiness, Gary Coats and Bruce Campbell took out the Bronze.

Happy 90th BirthdayClub members celebrated the 90th Birthday of Richard (Dick) Utting with presentation of a Bowls SA 90 Year Certificate by Region Councillor and Club President Tony Brown and Club Patron and member Leesa Vlahos MP.Dick has been a member since 1990 and in this time has won Club Singles Champion titles and been involved in the winning of three Pennant Flags.

Councillor Tony Brown, Richard Utting and Leesa Vlahos MP

REGION 11Seafood on the menu at MarionFollowing heavy rain in June the Marion Bowling Club rivalled the new Aquatic Centre pool when two of the five greens were submerged. Accompanied by a solitary seagull, Col Giles took the opportunity to wet a line, but there were no ‘touchers’ and he was reminded of the saying “A bad day’s fishing is better than a good day at work”

Club Upgrade at Reynella A number of State and local officials, including Lord Mayor Lorraine Rosenberg and Knox Ward Councillor Heather Merrit, attended a morning tea in late July to witness the presentation of a cheque for $100,000 by Sports Minister Tom Kenyon and local MP Alan Sibbons. The grant was obtained through the ORS Community Recreation and Sport Facilities Program. The upgrade will enable the Club to increase the capacity of their clubrooms to support the steady influx of members the Club has

experienced over the past few years. Kitchen and toilet facilities will be extended with a bigger area for seating, bar facilities and office space. Vice President George Robertson has been instrumental in the project and he was thanked by Club President Martin O’Nions and local MP Alan Sibbons for his tireless work. With Night Owls on Mondays all year round and Wednesday and Friday nights during daylight saving the upgrade will ensure the Club continues to go from strength to strength.

Minister Tom Kenyon presenting the cheque to President Martin O’Nions

REGION 1290 Year Old Pennant WinnersThe saying goes ‘Old bowlers never die, they just don’t score as much’. Nothing could be further from the truth with this quartet of 90 year olds from Grange, Johnny Forner, Colin Scott, Max Mitchell and Don (Hookey) Parsons. They all played their part in Grange’s Division 4 pennant winning team. Max skippered the Club’s best credentialed rink, being 184 shots up at the end of the season, which was statistically better than Australian player Wayne Ruediger’s record!

Questions

A bowl comes to rest near the boundary line. One of the skips asks one of the players at the mat end to check if it is in or out of bounds. The player notices the boundary peg at the head end is about 30cms to the right of where it should be. What actions should be taken?

A bowl in course belonging to player A rolls through the head without touching either the jack or a bowl, then it hits the foot of the marker. It does not hit any other bowl after displacement. What should happen to the bowl in course?

The jack is on the boundary line. A bowl in course tracks its way through the adjoining rink up to the jack on its own rink. It touches the jack moving it slightly. The bowl then comes to rest just outside the boundary line. The bowl is dead and is removed. Does the jack have to be replaced because it has been displaced by a bowl which subsequently became dead?

In a fours tournament played in sections with 3 games per section may a player change his bowls between games? If a player acts as a substitute in a team and that team is defeated may the player act as a substitute in another team in the same competition?

We Will Remember Them

Vale

Christened Dean but known as Bob all his life, Bob was a very successful farmer, with a strong community spirit resulting in a long term involvement with the Port Victoria

Bowling Club which he joined in 1962, the Maitland School Committee, and the Maitland Hospital Board. In 1988 he created history as the first country based President of the Royal South Australian Bowling Association and in total served the South Australian bowling community at State level for 19 years, which included Country Councillor 1973–1978, Executive Member 1979–1983, Vice President 1983–1988,

President 1988-1990 and Immediate Past President until 1992. During his service with the RSABA Bob was also a delegate to the Australian Bowls Council for four years. His outstanding service was acknowledged when he was awarded Life Membership of the RSABA in 1991.

Bob’s success on the green was also a big part of Bob’s history. He played

in two winning premierships at Port Victoria, won the Club Singles three times, Club Pairs 12 times, Association

Dean (Bob) Greenslade

Singles Champion of Champions once, the Association Fours title on three occasions, the Divisional Pairs Champion of Champions and the Divisional Fours Championship. In 1989, while President of the RSABA, Bob sponsored the Bob Greenslade Country Carnival Singles Shield which he had great pleasure in presenting each year to the winner. His administrative support of the sport and expertise on the green was rewarded when he was appointed as Manager of the 1990 Men’s and Women’s teams that competed in the Commonwealth Games in Auckland and brought home three Gold Medals and one Bronze. Bob’s hard work in his local area was acknowledged by presentation of Life Membership of the Southern Yorke Peninsula Bowling Association and the Port Victoria Bowling Club in 1997, and he was also awarded an Australian Sports Medal in 2000.Last season, despite ill health, Bob and Betty played off in the Final of the Club Mixed Pairs going down by just one shot. This epitomised Bob’s spirit of never giving up.Bowls SA extends condolences to Betty and the family on their loss. Rest in peace.

You Be the Umpire Answers

The bowl should be checked with the boundary peg in its current position. The boundary peg should not be moved until the end has been completed on any rinks affected. The peg should then be positioned correctly by the umpire or by agreement between the skips on the rinks affected. Law 5.8

If the bowl is displaced within the boundaries of the rink of play by a neutral person and it has not disturbed the head after it is displaced the bowl should be replayed. Law 28.3.1.1

No. The movement of the jack was a result of play and the bowl was still a live bowl when it touched the jack, therefore the jack remains in its new position.
