Introduction

Y ou may or may not remember from last time, that this is our September / October combined edition

– to give us a breather and because, well last year October was a bit slow. So to prove me wrong, this has been a bumper edition with new people coming on board – welcome, businesses we know doing different things – good luck, and repeats from our regulars, thank you!

Some of our new customers are coming from slightly further afield than the delivery area ‐ so word is spreading.

The businesses provide services we presently don’t offer in S40 Local and are still on our doorstep. I think this is good news, hope you do too.

We’ve also got features and articles, I’ve been talking to some of our local creatives, some you’ll be familiar with ‐ Clare Gage, Jerry Daniel a local photographer and member of the Chesterfield Photographic Society and Jono Hunt who’s based in Chesterfield but tends to sell his works overseas. I was particularly keen to talk to Jono, as he’s an ex Painter and Decorator and has ended up working from home in a design field – I felt an empathy with him and wanted to know how it was for him!

A correction from last month ‐ the number for Yoga for Life was incorrect, the right one is on their advert this month (0779 115 7672), so if you did try to contact them and failed, try again and please accept my apologies. I only got one digit wrong but that’s enough!

Right, so we’re back to school and the summers making a resurgence (or it was as I wrote this), but we’re on the countdown to Christmas, so next month we’ll be starting our local gift guide. If you’ve great gift ideas for our readers, then please get in touch!

Also I’ve been messing about with the layout a bit this month to make the pages more readable and leave a little more space, fingers crossed

that it’s worked!

The S40 Local website we launched last month has been well received and we’ve had 1054 hits, looks like you’re using it so that’s a good sign and I promise to try and get the “What’s On” events loaded before this edition hits your mats.

And, we’re hoping to launch our sister magazine next month S41 Local, same quality but focusing on Sheffield Road and the community that surrounds it. If you’ve friends or family living near Sheffield Road tell them to watch out for their own community edition.

So thank you to all of you who are using the local businesses. Just keep telling them where you saw their advert so they know it works.

Last point … is it just me or is anyone else suffering from a glut of home grown courgettes and green beans?

‘20s Plenty For Us’ is a national campaign aimed at reducing speed limits in residential areas to 20mph. Back in July, the Chesterfield branch of Living Streets, a campaign group aiming to improve life for pedestrians, and Transition Chesterfield organised a presentation so local people could find out more.

The audience including local councillors, representatives from the Police and Institute of Advanced Motoring and members of the public heard from Rod King who spearheads the campaign.

What were the key points? Britain has one of the worst pedestrian casualty rates in Europe. Portsmouth introduced authority‐wide 20mph speed limits in 2006 very cost‐effectively over 9 months, without speed bumps, and road casualties went down 15%. The success was confirmed by a member of the audience with family in Portsmouth.

Over 20 towns and cities have implemented or are rolling out authority‐wide 20mph speed limits including Oxford, Colchester, Sheffield and Leicester and public health authorities estimate child pedestrian deaths would reduce by nearly 70% if adopted nationally.

20mph in residential areas benefits all road users, drivers included, whose journey times only increase by sec9nds, but who have smoother, less congested journeys.

It was explained that the impetus for change must come from the community and how the benefits were enormous in terms of reduced casualties, improved public health, lower noise and a better quality of life.

Clare Gage: Ceramics


I f you’re not familiar with Clare Gage, she’s a local ceramist whose studio sits behind the shops at 479. We’ve previously

featured her in S40 Local as winner of several national awards; as one of the artists opening her studio during the Derbyshire Open Arts events and as an artist whose work is on sale at Created, her parents’ gallery – where Clare tells us ‘they always have the best selection of my work’.

She’s actively involved in our community and becoming renowned for her unusual and inspired work. Recently her work was presented as gifts to Troyes and Damstadt, our twinned towns, from the Mayor of Chesterfield. Plus, she’s behind the limited edition candle cups on sale in aid of the 2010 Mayor’s Cuppa Appeal raising funds for Fair Play and the Samaritans.

Clare’s ceramic collection consists of more than 20 pieces, including cups, vases, plates, bowls, decorations and the newest edition, the candle cups.

In this issue Clare explains step by step how she creates the Clare Gage cups.

“My degree specialism was Constructed Textiles and Ceramics, I was weaving fabric and designing patterns for the weave and decided to merge my two areas of interest to create my Textile Inspired Ceramics Collection.”

Weaving the fabric: It all starts with the textiles, I hand weave fabric on the loom choosing a clear, strongly textured pattern that transfers well on to the ceramics.

Making the fabric cup: I stitch together the textured fabric and a plain calico to make a fabric cup (see images 1 & 2). Then I incorporate lace, knit or buttons to add detail to the designs and enhance the textile theme. I have a different fabric cup

for each design in the collection.

Mould Making: In the ceramics department I learned to make moulds for ceramic production. I make my moulds using the fabric cups and turn my fabric cups into solid shapes.

I fill the fabric cups with clay and plaster and mould them into the cup shape. Then I make a plaster mould which captures the shape of the cup and the texture of the textiles (see image 3 of button cup mould).

Casting: The moulds are used for casting. I use porcelain slip, which I make from porcelain clay (slip is essentially liquid clay), and pour into my moulds. I leave the slip for a few minutes whilst the plaster absorbs the water from the slip, this makes some on the clay stick to the inside of the mould. The excess slip is then poured out of the mould and you are left with a lining of clay inside the mould. When taken out of the mould the clay has the textile texture on the outside.

Work done by hand: When they come out of the mould I work on each piece by hand, adding stitches individually so the pieces look as thought they are sewn together (see studio image 4 and posy bowl 5).

Glazing and firing: The cups are left to dry then fired once in the kiln in my studio. Each piece is glazed with a gloss glaze on the inside and matt on the outside to keep a feeling of textiles ‐ I spray the matt glaze to stop it getting too thick and clogging the texture. I sign each piece on the bottom and re‐fire them to a higher temperature.

C ontinuing the theme of local creatives I spoke to Jono Hunt, I know him from preschool, standing

in the rain waiting for the doors to open as the kids run amok. He used to work as a painter and decorator and now works from home designing icons. This is a huge change and I wanted to find out more.

>> How did you get into icon design, having previously worked as a Painter and Decorator? “It started out with me changing some icons on my computer to help me differentiate between folders ‐ Documents folder, Music folder, Downloads folder etc. when I couldn't find the icon I wanted I decided to try and make some myself. As I got better I posted some of them on the internet for other people to use, they were well received and as they got more popular I started getting requests from companies who wanted me to make icons for them. After a while I was so busy with it I started doing it full time.”

>> Did you do any training? “No, I taught myself from online tutorials and a lot of trial and error.”

>> How does the business work, what tools do you use? “I originally started using Adobe Photoshop LE and moved on to Adobe Photoshop. I then started using Adobe Illustrator as well and more recently started to use Maxon Cinema 4D.”

>> So what’s the most frequently used icon you’ve designed and which is your favourite. “Some of the most popular icons I designed were a few years ago, a set called iCandy Junior. They've been

used in software, on websites, in print and by people customising their own computers. They were quite bright, cartoony and fun looking. The ones I make now are a little more serious looking, not so cartoony in style.

My favourite is usually the last icon I made (I soon go off them).”

>> Are local people likely to have used any of them? “Possibly but I doubt it, they're usually used in software and on websites, mainly from companies abroad. I've not seen any of them used locally.”

>> Abroad, so who are your customers and where are they based? “They're mainly software companies, from all over the world. About 70% of them in the US, and the rest are in Canada, Australia, Europe, India, Japan, Taiwan etc. I don't tend to work for British companies very often. No particular reason for that, I just seem to be found and approached through my website by companies overseas.”

Although I don't see anyone I'm in contact with plenty of other designers all the time, through email and Twitter, so it doesn't feel like a lonely existence. Plus working from home means I rarely get any peace and quite, with my young boys to disturb the peace!”

Icons are pictures or symbols giving information, instructions or representing actions to be carried out. They're used everywhere in life. Airports, train stations, road signs, books, toilets etc. Many icons used in software on computers and on websites, and more recently devices such as iPhones and iPads.

On a computer when you click on the Internet Explorer 'e' symbol or the small Word and Excel symbols to start the Microsoft Office programs they are icons. In Word, Excel etc. the floppy disk for saving files, scissors for cut etc, the row of icons across the screen top in toolbars … you get the picture.

O ur third local creative is Jerry Daniel. An art student at Leicester, Hornsey

College of Art and Royal College of Art, he worked in design in the private sector for a while but ended up teaching art at Middlesex Polytechnic before moving to Chesterfield.

“My pictures record details rather than traditional views, they rarely include the horizon. Eliminating this obvious reference point increases the potential for landscape to go beyond recognisable places and become more selective, discretionary and personal: A vehicle for my creative ideas which are still influenced by my school art years as well as multimedia stimulants we absorb every day.

I see landscapes through my personal filter of cultural values. This process is mostly intuitive but involves careful composition and repeated visits to a location, and sometimes combining images with different photographic values (exposure, filters, focus etc). The images have only minor manipulations in Photoshop to enhance traditional pictorial values.”

F or a while now I’ve been keeping an eye out for the restored Morris Minor van owned by Brampton Brewery,

I’ve only seen it once but I thought I’d get in touch with Chris for some pictures.

In response he not only sent this great shot of the van outside the present brewery, but also included this fantastic archive shot of an original brewery delivery vehicle ‐ if you know who the men are on the shot, please get in touch, we’d love to hear from you.

From the information we do have, we suspect the Brampton Steam Dray was made by Wm Allchin of Northampton, founded in the mid‐1800’s, with this actual model dating from around 1910 – 1920.

But, Brampton Brewery aren’t the only local company restoring their heritage. Having included these photo’s in S40, I is was in conversation with John Frederick when he mentioned his Horse Drawn Ice Cream Cart.

This picture of the cart was taken at the recent Bakewell Show, where it promotes the company and it’s rich heritage. This horse drawn cart, an interesting piece of the company’s history, was in regular use in 1945. It was restored back to it’s former glory by Frederick’s in 1990 ‐ two new wheels were made and it was painted and sign written using gold leaf. Today it is one of the only surviving examples still in use.

So horse, steam and petrol delivery vehicles demonstrate the heritage we have in our local businesses and how times change … now are there still any electric milk floats about?

B rookfield Community School, based on Chatsworth Road, is designated as a specialist

sports college so I thought I’d take a look at what facilities are available to both pupils and local residents.

I recently visited Denise Howard, the school’s Director of Sport in the community, and was overwhelmed by the facilities and the options available.

A new sports hall was built four years ago and became immediately available for community usage, predominantly in the evening and at weekends with the school taking precedence in the day time, however a few time slots remain available.

During my visit the hall was divided into three sections and being used for basketball, badminton and table tennis with over 50 pupils in action.

Outside school hours most slots are booked by organised sports clubs, ranging from badminton to karate to basketball to Tai Chi. In fact over 61 sporting activities are allocated time at Brookfield to ensure maximum community participation.

The middle of June saw the opening of the new full size floodlit 3rd generation artificial grass pitch sited next to the sports hall. As Denise explained “Chesterfield has a real

shortage of good quality grass pitches and this facility will provide a much needed venue to train, play matches and just enjoy a game of football. As a sports college and hub of the Chesterfield School Sports partnership we are committed to providing the best sports facilities possible for our local community.” I tried the pitch and was hugely impressed with the quality of the surface and trueness of the bounce. Not surprisingly several local football teams have grabbed time slots as soon as booking became available to ensure training is possible for all 12 months of the year.

Of course such a development doesn’t just happen. There are strategies to define and bids to prepare but the case for progression was clearly overwhelming. The extent of community interaction is impressive – six local football clubs (all with several teams) such as Chesterfield Town FC, Somersall Rangers and Brampton Rovers, all helped ensure project viability with up‐front commitment along with newer initiatives such as futsal and the further development of ladies football that provided a broader usage base.

Last month Mark Porter aged just 14 won the U16 English Schools’ Golf Championship.

Oliver Hooper the school’s partnership ambassador works as one of eight young ambassadors from across the UK to advise and plan for the 2012 Olympics. He visited Athens in 2009 and attended a key conference at the International Olympic Academy.

Connor Martin has been awarded a scholarship with Sheffield United.

Water polo: Jeremy Austin competed as part of the Youth GB squad in Poland, Amy Sykes, Gemma Sykes and and Holly Redford‐Jones have also been selected to train with the GB squad.

Ashley Davies regularly competes for GB at squash.

Curtis Hooper competes for the country in tenpin bowling and is a proud member of the 300 club.

Abbie Taylor finished in the top 6 in the national BMX competition.

fruition. £1.5m towards the cost of a new swimming pool, which would have been located next to the new artificial pitch and adjacent to the sports hall, had been obtained from Sport England through the Free Swimming capital modernization funding programme, but mid‐July the government pulled the plug on the development as part of their package of cuts. It’s now hard to see that funding returning to complete the vision of sporting excellence.

However , we should all be proud of what is being achieved and the access to existing facilities that is being taken advantage of. The facilities are not there to use in the way you would access Queens Park Leisure Centre or Brampton Manor as the school requires those making the block bookings to take responsibility for their members. A wide range of activities are catered for and all clubs are on the lookout for new members.

I can’t close without giving a much

deserved mention to the pupils themselves. Their sporting attainment warrants recognition. The green box highlights a few examples of pupils recent efforts.

A s the 2012 Olympics head to UK soil; it’s particularly exciting to hear about local involvement and hopefuls from S40.

Hannah Lawrence, from Ashgate an ex Brookfield, pupil, is one of those who hopes to be right in the thick of it as a competitor on the British Fencing Team.

Hannah started fencing at 14 when she joined friends for fun at the Wingerworth Fencing Club, (now based at

Sharley Park), spending most of her time chatting and avoiding warm‐ups. But at 16 friends started dropping out and she started fencing against and beating stronger men! She entered regional competitions, winning those, and moved on to National competitions, where she gained a national junior and senior ranking, making it onto the British Junior (under 20’s) team at just 16 years old.

Since then, Hannah has travelled the world, whilst studying at Manchester University, and her fencing has gone from strength to strength. So much so, that on finishing her degree she has moved to London to train with the British fencing team to prepare for the Olympics.

As things stand, Hannah’s in a strong position to be on the British team for the Olympics, the team’s in good shape to qualify, and they’ve 2 years of hard work and training to put them in the best shape for winning a medal.

Full time training in London means Hannah will be making a financial sacrifice as intensive training will limit her income‐earning capacity. In the past Hannah has been awarded funding from Steria Ltd, a European IT business services provider with a base here in Chesterfield. This has been invaluable in assisting Hannah build her skills and gain membership of the British Team. If any businesses are interested in sponsoring Hannah, she is looking for around £1000 for travel and £1000 for the London club, and competition fees over the upcoming year. There are three disciplines in fencing: Foil, Sabre and Epee. Hannah does Epee, the most popular discipline worldwide.

In epee you can hit your opponent anywhere on the body, including head and toes, and there are no right of way rules, which means, if you both hit at the same time, you are both awarded a point.

Great Britain are working to enter the team event – where you fence everyone on the other team and keep a running score. There are three people in a team, including a reserve, who is often subbed in. You switch fights every 5 points, and the winning team is the first team to reach 45 points.

W e received this press release from the Safer Neighbourhood team at the end of July. Unfortunately it missed the August issue so although it’s a little late it’s good news for the area.

“Burglaries in the Walton and West area of Chesterfield have dropped by more than 25 per cent in the last three months thanks to the efforts of the local neighbourhood policing team.

Figures for April, May and June show house burglaries have dropped by 26 per cent and other burglaries (including sheds and outbuildings) have dropped by 30 per cent compared to the same period last year.

All crime in the area is down by six per cent for the same period.

Tackling house burglaries and other serious acquisitive crime is one of the Walton and West Safer Neighbourhood Team’s priority issues

which they have been tackling since March. The latest crime figures were publicised at a recent community panel meeting held at Walton Evangelical Church.

PC David Randell, of the Walton and West SNT, said: “Everyone who attended the meeting was happy with the decrease in burglary and serious acquisitive crime levels.

“We will continue to tackle the issues that matter in the community but we are pleased with the positive results so far since we took on these priorities.”

The team has been carrying out a number of initiatives to combat the problem including covert plain clothes patrols, SmartWater coding property and holding crime prevention days.

Mayor of Chesterfield, Cllr Keith Morgan, who is also the chair of the Walton and West Community Forum, said: “The statistics this quarter show

a significant progress and I want to thank the police in Walton, particularly PC Randell and the PCSOs for the sterling work they have done this year.

Two Good Causes Charity bike ride: Jack Needham and his friend David will be cycling from London to Paris in aid of the Royal National Institute for the Deaf.

Jack says “We’ve both lived in Chesterfield all our lives so we’ll also be raising vital funds for Ashgate Hospice.

The trip will take place over three days, from the 3rd ‐ 6th September and will be a total of 300km.”
