GATHERING

Prelude

Welcome

StandConfession and Forgiveness Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God,who forgives all our sin, whose mercy endures forever. Amen.

Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.

Silence is kept for reflection.

Gracious God,have mercy on us. We confess that we have turned from you and given ourselves into the power of sin. We are truly sorry and humbly repent. In your compassion forgive us our sins, known and unknown, things we have done and things we have failed to do. Turn us again to you, and uphold us by your Spirit, so that we may live and serve you in newness of life through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and made us alive together with Christ. By grace you have been saved. In the name of ☩ Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven. Almighty God strengthen you with power through the Holy Spirit, that Christ may live in your hearts through faith.Amen.

Prayer of the DayLet us pray. Sovereign of the universe, your first covenant of mercy was with every living creature. When your beloved Son came among us, the waters of the river welcomed him, the heavens opened to greet his arrival, the animals of the wilderness drew near as his companions. With all the world’s people, may we who are washed into new life through baptism seek the way of your new creation, the way of justice and care, mercy and peace; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

WORDSit

First Reading: Genesis 1:1-2:31 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. 3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.6 And God said, “Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.” 7 So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. And it was so. 8 God called the vault “sky.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day.9 And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.” And it was so. 10 God called the dry ground “land,” and the gathered waters he called “seas.” And God saw that it was good.11 Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so. 12 The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day.

6

Page 7: s3.amazonaws.com  · Web viewhave mercy on us. We confess that we have turned from you and given ourselves into the power of sin. We are truly sorry and humbly repent. In your compassion

14 And God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so. 16 God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. 17 God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth, 18 to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day.20 And God said, “Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the vault of the sky.” 21 So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living thing with which the water teems and that moves about in it, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22 God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth.” 23 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fifth day.24 And God said, “Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: the livestock, the creatures that move along the ground, and the wild animals, each according to its kind.” And it was so. 25 God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals,[a] and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so.31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day. 2 Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.

2 By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Psalm 8:1-9 (Please read responsively ) 1O LORD our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!—2you whose glory is chanted above the heavens out of the mouths of infants and children;you have set up a fortress against your enemies, to silence the foe and avenger.3When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars you have set in their courses,4what are mere mortals that you should be mindful of them, human beings that you should care for them?5Yet you have made them little less than divine;with glory and honor you crown them.6You have made them rule over the works of your hands;you have put all things under their feet:7all flocks and cattle, even the wild beasts of the field,8the birds of the air, the fish of the sea,and whatever passes along the paths of the sea.9O LORD our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

Psalm PrayerLet us pray. Eternal God, in the order of your creation you have given righteousness, justice, peace, and love for the enlightenment of all people. Keep us always in that light, so that throughout our lives we may show forth the glory of the light of the world, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning is now, and forever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Second Reading: Colossians 1:15-2015He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; 16for in him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers — all things have been created through him and for him. 17He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything. 19For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Gospel: John 1:1-5, 8-14The Holy Gospel according to John.Glory to you, O Lord.

1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was in the beginning with God. 3All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being 4in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. 5The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. 8He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. 9The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. 10He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. 11He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. 12But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, 13who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God. 14And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father's only son, full of grace and truth. The Gospel of the Lord.Praise to you, O Christ.

Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayers Of IntercessionEach prayer petition concludes with the following words:Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Sharing Of The PeaceThe peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you.

Dialogue The Lord be with you.And also with you.Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.It is right to give our thanks and praise.

It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all placesgive thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God,through our Savior Jesus Christ;who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven,we praise your name and join their unending hymn.

Words of InstitutionIn the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin.Do this for the remembrance of me.

Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses,as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

God’s Work. Our Hands. During the month of September, each of us has the opportunity to reach out to our neighbors in some  exciting and special ways. 1. September 22, the children are doing a noisy can collection during worship to assist Rolf Arnesen with the school weekend food project. Noisy can collection will continue throughout the year on every 4th Sunday of the month. Paper accepted. 2. Becky Watkins is coordinating a special meal for the residents at Project ECHO for September  20. More information listed below.

Project ECHO Dinner for GWOH!God’s Work. Our Hands. is hosting a dinner for Project ECHO homeless shelter September 20th. There is a sign-up sheet if you would like to prepare a dish for the dinner. If you don't have time to cook, there is a monetary donation jar and all proceeds will go toward the dinner. Any money left over will be donated to the shelter. If you cannot do either, we ask that you contribute to the Positivity Jar which will be given to the residents. You can write words of encouragement, a prayer, a joke, anything that will bring a smile to their faces. Let's work together to spread God's light and love to those who need it in their darkest days! Thank you for your kindness.

Project EHCOMany thanks to Ann Wolfgang, Carol Blatt, Mary Jo Gebhardt, Becky Watkins, Vicki Williams, the Yott Family, Sarah Bowen, and Kristen Albaugh for preparing the August meal for Project Echo!  If you would like to be a part of the team that prepares the September meal, to be served on Sunday, September 22nd, please sign up on the bulletin board in the narthex, or contact Kathy Dangin at [email protected].

Although food donations are welcome at any time, we have designated the first Sunday of each month as "First Food Sunday" to help restock their shelves. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated and go a long way in helping the needy in our community. Here are some suggested food items. Cereal,  snacks (Nutri-grain/granola bars etc.), baked beans, pasta salad, pasta sides (Knorr, Kraft etc.) Please place donations in the basket in the lobby.
