Uses of Generic Escitalopram Tablets

S-Citadep (Escitalopram Oxalate tablets) is used to treat depression and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD, which is excessive worry and tension that disrupts daily life and lasts for 6 months or longer) and Major Depressive Disorder (MDD, prominent and relatively persistent (nearly every day for at least 2 weeks) depressed or dysphoric mood that usually interferes with daily functioning).

S-Citadep (Escitalopram Oxalate tablets) have to be stored at controlled room temperature i.e. 25C (77F) with excursions permitted between 15 to 30C (59 to 86F). Store in a cool dry place. Protect from light. Keep this as well as all other medicines away from children and pets.

Warnings

Clinical Worsening/Suicide Risk: Monitor for clinical worsening, suicidality and unusual change in behavior, especially, during the initial few months of therapy or at times of dose changes .

Serotonin Syndrome or Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS)-like Reactions: Manage with immediate discontinuation and continuing monitoring.

Discontinuation of Treatment with S-Citadep: A gradual reduction in dose rather than abrupt cessation is recommended whenever possible.

Seizures: Prescribe with care in patients with a history of seizure.

Activation of Mania/Hypomania: Use cautiously in patients with a history of mania.

Hyponatremia: Can occur in association with SIADH.

Abnormal Bleeding: Use caution in concomitant use with NSAIDs, aspirin, warfarin or other drugs that affect coagulation .

Interference with Cognitive and Motor Performance: Use caution when operating machinery.

Use in Patients with Concomitant Illness: Use caution in patients with diseases or conditions that produce altered metabolism or hemodynamic responses

Dosage

For the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder as well as Generalized Anxiety Disorder in adults, the recommended initial dose of Generic Escitalopram (S-Citadep Tablets) is 10 mg once daily. The dosage may be increased to 20mg after a minimum period of one week has been completed if required. S-Citadep Tablets (Generic Escitalopram) should be administered once daily, in the morning or evening at approximately the same time each day with or without food.

Contraindications

S-Citadep is contraindicated in patients with a hypersensitivity to Escitalopram Oxalate or Citalopram or any other component of this medication.Concomitant use in patients taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) is contraindicated.Concomitant use in patients taking Pimozide is contraindicated.

Generic Escitalopram Side Effects

Commonly observed Generic Escitalopram side effects are insomnia, nausea, ejaculation disorder (primarily ejaculatory delay), decreased libido, and anorgasmia, sweating increased, fatigue, and somnolence, inflicted injury, dizziness, back pain, upper respiratory tract infection, rhinitis and pharyngitis.

Escitalopram Overdose

During clinical trials of Escitalopram, there were reports of Escitalopram overdose, including overdoses of up to 600 mg, with no associated fatalities. Symptoms most often accompanying escitalopram overdose, alone or in combination with other drugs and/or alcohol, included convulsions, coma, dizziness, hypotension, insomnia, nausea, vomiting, sinus tachycardia, somnolence, and ECG changes.

An airway has to be established and maintained inorder to ensure adequate ventilation and oxygenation. Gastric evacuation by lavage and use of activated charcoal must be considered. Careful observation and cardiac and vital sign monitoring are recommended, along with general symptomatic as well as supportive care. Due to the large volume of distribution of Escitalopram, forced diuresis, dialysis, hemoperfusion, and exchange transfusion are unlikely to be of benefit. There are no specific antidotes for S-Citadep (Escitalopram Oxalate).

Escitalopram During Pregnancy

S-Citadep (Escitalopram Oxalate tablets) has been classified by the US FDA as Pregnancy Category C. During animal reproduction studies, racemic citalopram has been shown to have adverse effects on embryo/fetal and postnatal development, including teratogenic effects, when administered at doses greater than human therapeutic doses. There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women; therefore, Escitalopram should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.
