A Note from the Director

What would you do if you were a thirteen-year-old girl, on a farm in the Oklahoma Territory in 1901, and one day your entire family gets sick with a fever, and everyone you have ever known and loved dies,

but you survive? This is what happens to Laurey in the play “Green Grow The Lilacs”, which Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, II, developed into the musical, “Oklahoma!” She is left alone, on the farm that she now inherits, with no guidance other than the help of neighbors, until her Aunt Eller comes out to the new territory to help her . That nugget of information got me really think-ing about how Laurey, now five years older, would cope with life, with love and relationships after having gone through such a terrible experience at such an impressionable age . Would she be able to relate to men? Would she be afraid to love someone because she might lose them?

It also got me thinking about what life was like for these people, who left everything behind for a new life and land . Out here in the country there were no phones, no electricity, no indoor plumbing, and no radio . There were also no schools, no fire departments, none of the infrastructure to which we have become so accustomed . Out here, for example, if a house caught fire, it would burn to the ground because there would be no way to put it out . Aside from routine trips to town to trade for goods and services, or the occasional wedding, funeral, or box social, these farmers and ranchers would not have much social contact . And the only entertainment they had was that which they made themselves, through song and dance . Thinking about that, made me realize how brilliant Richard Rodgers was, to have the opening number of the show begin with just the voice of one young man (Curly) singing just for the joy of singing on a very beautiful morning .

MUSICIAN SPOTLIGHT

For this production, we would like to focus our spotlight on Dori Shimer, playing percussion . Dori has been in our orchestras since 1984, that’s thirty years and she’s not only been in our pit, but has also played for our sister group, South Bay Musical Theatre, formerly Saratoga Drama Group as well as SCP, PAP, RJJT and TheaterWorks!

Dori loves live theater; that’s why when she’s playing a show, she arrives early so she can sit in the audience and watch the crew working to prepare the stage, the cast starting their physical and vocal warm-ups and finally her orchestra cohorts joining her to finalize their preparations for the current musical . And when she’s not watching her music or her conductor, she loves to look at the audience members and see their reactions to our performers . We love having Dori’s smiling face behind that set of drums and bringing her special talent to our Broadway shows .

Grateful acknowledGementsSouth Bay Musical Theatre, Sunnyvale Community Players, Gerald Carter,

West Valley College Drama Department, Actors Theatre Center, Harley and Esther Goes, Kitty Monahan, and Professor David Herendeen, Director of Opera and Musical Theater, Oklahoma City University, for his

DiD You Know . . .that “Oklahoma!” was the first musical written by the team of tcomposer Richard Rodgers and librettist Oscar Hammerstein, II?

that prior to their partnership, Rodgers had always written tthe music first and the lyricists would fill in the lyrics; while Hammerstein liked to write the lyrics first to tell his story and that’s the way this musical was born?

that the original production opened on Broadway on March 31, t1943, and ran for an unprecedented 2,212 performances, finally closing on May 29, 1948?

that the first title of the show was “Away We Go” when it was tpresented in New Haven?

that before it went to Broadway, Rodgers and Hammerstein made t2 changes, they added the show-stopping number, Oklahoma, and retitled the musical after that number?

that the original production was choreographed by Agnes de Mille, tand it was her first time choreographing a musical on Broadway?

that the original Broadway cast featured Alfred Drake as Curly, tJoan Roberts as Laurey, Howard de Silva as Jud, Betty Garde as Aunt Eller, Celeste Holm as Ado Annie, Lee Dixon as Will Parker and Joseph Buloff as Ali Hakim?

that the production ran for over five years, a Broadway record that twould not be bested until “My Fair Lady” in 1956?

that the Tony Awards were not in existence in 1943, and therefore tthe original production received no theatrical awards?

that in 1955 the film adaptation was released and it was the first tfeature film photographed in the Todd-AO 70 mm widescreen process?

that the film version starred Gordon MacRae, Shirley Jones (in her tfilm debut), Rod Steiger, Charlotte Greenwood, Gloria Grahame, Gene Nelson, James Whitmore and Eddie Albert?
