Within the next few months, NSRCC will be upgrading its premises to feature a sports bar cum jackpot facility and state-of-the-art meeting and function rooms. Also slated in its improvement and upgrading plans, the entire fleet of golf buggies at Changi and Kranji locations will be replaced. So stay tuned!
Members and guests can expect a much more vibrant place for families and friends to unwind, an ideal meeting space for the hosting of functions and look forward to a more enjoyable golf game.
In the months of June and July, we witnessed the thrills and spills of several major golf events namely the HSBC Youth Challenge, Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Day and National Service (NS) Day competitions. There was good response and attendance at the NS45 Challenge prior to the Shotgun start event, celebrating 45 years of National Service. Catch all the action in “on par”. Flip to pages 20 and 21 for Golf 101 and Phil Brew’s column on tips on how to play the ball in tight situations and stay in narrowed focus, respectively.
I would like take the opportunity to mention our passionate committee members who volunteered their time and expertise to the Resort, seen at the recently held inaugural committee appointment cum get-together event, which saw the appointment of 14 new and 26 re-appointed committee members for a two-year term of office starting 1 July 2012. To the new members, the management and staff would like to extend a warm welcome to the NSRCC Committees’ family!
The annual event was aimed at fostering cohesion and camaraderie between committee and management staff through the golf game and dinner cum Karaoke session and also served as a platform to recognise staff for delivering service excellence and exemplary act.
Read about the achievements of our young bowler, Joey Yeo who scored gold at the Asian Schools Tenpin Bowling Championships and an anecdote of how course marshal, Supain and duty executive, Duran Jeffrey’s heroic rescue saved the life of a golfer who had a sudden cardiac arrest during a private golf game at Kranji Sanctuary Golf Course (KSGC).
On a lighter note, we quizzed the security staff on their roles and responsibilities in our regular Behind the Scenes column on how they keep NSRCC safe and secure.
Last but not least, we encourage members to actively participate in our events and make the Resort your family’s regular stop for leisure and entertainment!

Save A LifeSupian rushed to hole #12 and found the golfer unconscious with no visible signs of heartbeat or breathing present. Immediately, Supian started doing chest compressions to keep the golfer’s blood circulating while a few bystanders looked on and were clearly befuddled.
Not long after, Duran arrived with the automated external defibrillator (AED) and first aid kit. Despite delivering the first shock, there was still no breathing and pulse detected, hence Supian and Duran knew he was not out of danger and continued Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Between them, they performed over 30 minutes of mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and multiple chest compressions.
By the time the ambulance arrived, the second shock was delivered and no further shock was advised. Fortunately, moments later, Supian noticed there were slight movements
in the golfer’s hands. His lips and palms had slightly returned pink and warm
unlike when Supian first encountered- pale and cold.
Upon receiving the news that the golfer was out of danger, Duran was overjoyed, “The feeling is indescribable”.
Duran exclaimed, “Nothing can beat the feeling, it was a quiet victory for us when the organiser updated us that their friend was alive. The feeling did not leave us till 6pm when we finally visited him in Khoo Teck Phuat Hospital intensive care unit (ICU). We were quietly congratulating ourselves, victory, I thought to myself, as we were glad to see him.”
“We will encourage others to help anyone in need, administering early CPR and AED,” both replied in unison.
Duran was glad that he did what he had to do, aided by the fact that he recently attended a CPR refresher course. He felt that this refresher training was very useful which gave him the confidence to act without hesitation. At NSRCC all golf marshalls and operations staff are sent for CPR and AED revision courses on a regular basis, since last year to ensure that they are trained in the latest life-saving techniques.
“For me, I saved a life during my National Service days and was not so lucky in another attempt. I am glad I
managed to render help to Mr Gan and for me, life goes on. When faced with the same situation, will I do it again? The risk is there, I would say 50/50. I felt demoralised the first time but I am now overjoyed that a life has been saved. All I can say is that
life is precious. Do what you have to do best and leave the rest to god,” replied Duran.
“I am very happy that I am given a second life by unknown friends who are now my saviours,” added Mr Gan.
Supian agreed, “CPR is good for you and your loved ones. ”
The valient efforts of Supian and Duran were also recognised by the Management and they were presented exemplary awards by the President of the Resort, LG Neo Kian Hong during the Annual Get-Together event for committees and staff recently.
It was 12.30pm when the call came in to Supian, a course marshal who was on duty at Kranji Sanctuary Golf Course (KSGC) on 29 June. The call reported that a golfer’s flight mate had passed out from a sudden cardiac arrest. Instinctively, Supian called for the ambulance and informed Duran, the duty executive.

RV spoke with Joey Yeo, a feisty 14-year-old Raffles Girls’ School student and her parents, in an interview since her scintillating performance at the recent Asian Schools Tenpin Bowling Championships in Jakarta.
Along with her teammates, they swept gold in the singles, doubles, team, all-events and Masters.
Joey clinched 3 individual gold and 1 bronze medals.
She is currently training with the NSRCC Youth Squad, National Youth Team and Raffles Girls’ Tenpin Bowling Team.
At what age did you pick up bowling? Joey: I started when I was 8. I saw my brothers bowling. They were part of the school team and I wanted to bowl since 3. Mr Yeo: She would always tag along with her brothers but she was too
little to pick up the ball. She had been representing
Methodist Girls’ School (MGS) since she was in Primary 3.
How was the Asian School Tenpin Bowling Championships win an important accomplishment?Joey: I didn’t really expect to do so well, it was my first time at the championships and I didn’t know what to expect. I just gave it my best shot. I was very happy, this is by far my best tournament.
Any memorable experience you had at the championships?Joey: The moment we won the team gold. We fought hard together as a team and worked very hard with our coaches. Mr Yeo: It was Joey’s first tournament win representing Singapore. Mrs Yeo: They went there as Team Singapore. The win was for Singapore. After the anthem was played, I then realised Joey had won.
What do you learn from bowling that helped you through your personal journey thus far?Joey: It taught me not to feel disappointed after one setback. In bowling, after one low game, it doesn’t mean the end of the world, you can cover up with other games. Likewise, in life, if I ever do badly, it is also not the end of the world.
How is your training like?Joey: I train six days a week except on Fridays, and twice on Tuesday for the school’s “B” division.Mrs Yeo: Before the school tournament, she will train twice on Monday as well. She trains with the national youth team five times a week. On top of that, she has twice a week physical training at the gym to build strength endurance and attends sports psychology sessions once a month.
Since competition is over, what have you been busy with?Joey: Trying to catch up with school work and I have been bowling regularly.
Any competitions you are preparing for next?Joey: I will be participating in the Singapore National Championships in November and I hope that I can make the team in the Asian Bowling Championship in September.
If given an opportunity to develop your career in bowling, will you hold back your studies?Mrs Yeo: We have the answer, many years ago. I told Joey that if she was given an opportunity to participate in a big event, she may put off her studies for 1-2 years. I believe not everybody will have that opportunity, if she wants to realise her dreams in this area, we are supportive of her, partly because she is the youngest child.
Is there any bowling icon that you look up to?Joey: New Hui Fen, who won Singapore’s first gold medal at the 2009 Asian Youth Games in Singapore. As I watched the live telecast, I told myself I want to do that and represent Singapore at that level. Mrs Yeo: While we were watching the games, she walked up to the television and said, “One day, I will be like her.”
How would your friends, teachers, mum and dad describe you?Joey: Extroverted and hyper. Mrs Yeo: From young, since primary school, during Parent Teacher Meetings, teachers would say she is the live-wire in class. Mr Yeo: She needs to balance all the activities she has. She will definitely have to complete her grade 8 piano. If she wants to further her music, we will support her. She has even indicated that she wants to take up violin.
How would you describe your school training vs club training at NSRCC?Joey: I enjoy school training. It allows for more bonding between the team. School trainings are held over at Raffles Town Club. As the group is large, we are assigned 3-4 bowlers a lane, occupying 8 out of 10 lanes. The pace is slow so we get to bond more. Over here, we have 1-2 bowlers per lane. We get to play games and stuff.
Any additional points to add?Mrs Yeo: We are very proud of her. Despite her winnings, she is still very humble. That is something we both stress very much. When one becomes proud it becomes very difficult to have the kind of friendship around her team mates. That is always something we want her to keep in mind and there is always something to learn from someone.

Behind The Scenes
This is the fifth of a six series on interesting and unusual work in the Resort.
As you step into the Resort for your golf game, bungalow stay or dining at the F&B outlets, the security personnel are out and about the place. Other than the greeting and nod at the entrance of the guardhouse, how well do you know them or know their names?
It is time to find out.
Security jobs are often labelled as being the most dangerous job on earth. The truth is they are the first line of defence against crimes, ensuring a safe and enjoyable environment for our members and guests, although many would say it’s a given.
This involves the patrolling and maintaining of safety and security on this massive 100 hectares plot of land, comprising 40 bungalows, Sea Sports Centre a driving range, bowling centre, main club house, car park, the three 9-hole golf courses, executive par-3 course and other recreational facilities.
They are stationed at the 24-hour security office and responsible for monitoring vehicle movements, spotting suspicious looking characters loitering in the Resort during the late hours of the night, bungalow visitor registrations, close-circuit television (CCTV) monitoring, jackpot room security and general assistance from time to time.
Apart from these activities, they also conduct fire drill/evacuation twice a year for all stakeholders, as well as to conduct hands-on-practice on how to use the fire extinguisher and hose reel.
The role of Security personnel offers variety as they rotate around the different working areas and to know that they are around keeping our premise safe and secure, puts our minds at ease to be able to enjoy recreational and social activities at the Resort.

NS45 Challenge and NS Day Golf 2012
This year’s NS Day Golf was not the usual shotgun start competition. It featured a 45-hole challenge held over two weekends at Kranji Sanctuary and Changi Golf course as a mark to 45 years of National Service (NS45).
For the first time, the competition saw more than 200 golfers challenge themselves physically and mentally to vie for the top 45 spots and the hole-in-one prize - a Jaguar XF, sponsored by TAT Petroleum Pte Ltd.
Guest-of-Honour, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Education (MOE) and Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts (MICA) Mr Lawrence Wong was present to grace the event.
This is the most number of holes played at NS Day Golf thus far. Feast on the best and gruelling moments of NS45 Challenge and NS Day Golf here.

Rule 20-1 Lifting and Marking of Ball
If the ball-marker interferes with the play, stance or stroke of another player, it should be placed one or more club head-lengths to one side.
A) If the ball-marker is in the direct line of another player, it is necessary to move the ball-marker one or two club head-lengths to one side.
Your ball marker
Player’s ball
B) Aim the club using a reference point (e.g. a tree), shown in the picture with your club and move the ball-marker one or two club head-lengths to one side.
C) Ball-marker is moved out of the line of play.
D) Using the same reference point, return the ball-marker to its original position.
The position of a ball to be lifted should be marked by placing a ball-marker, a small coin or other similar object immediately behind the ball. Examples of methods of marking the position of a ball that are not recommended are as follows:
A) Placing the toe of a club at the side of, or behind, the ball.
B) Using a loose impediment (e.g. stone)
C) Using a tee D) Scratching a line, as this practice may cause damage to the putting green.

You would be surprised how many golfers struggle to stay focussed on their golf game without allowing negative thoughts to creep in. When a good golfer is fixed on his target, nothing else exists. He is single minded. Water hazards, trees and out of bounds do not distract him. Once he has chosen his target, he only thinks of getting his ball there.
The more you are consumed by your target the more your instincts and subconscious will help you find it. If you are into your target, the ball will go there more often. You are less likely to miss-hit shots and your misses will be more playable. You want to focus on the smallest possible target without squinting.
Players visualise the trajectory of the golf ball in numerous ways such as lines, the entire path of the ball and the ball going from the target back to the player, almost like watching a video clip in rewind.
Look at the target with soft eyes, caressing it with your sight but do not stare at the target so intensely that you become rigid. As long as you have picked a target and think only of sending your ball to that target, you are fine.
I have had countless experiences both negative and positive of varying degrees trying to focus on my target. I recall a stretch of professional tour life back in the mid 90’s where I played a string of tight narrow courses, not long but courses
d e m a n d i n g accuracy off the tee and into
the greens. My game progressively suffered. I became tight and fearful of missing my targets and it took a chance experience to snap me out of my downward spiral.
I was playing tournaments at that time in North Queensland around Cairns, in the middle of a tournament at Half Moon Bay. My drives were missing their marks on a tight course and my high scores were reflecting it.
Out of shear frustration, in between rounds, I drove to a meandering coastal road near where I was staying and parked my car at one of the bends. I opened my boot, pulled out my driver, practice balls, teed up and launched drive after drive into the Pacific Ocean.
It was one of the most liberating experiences I have ever had and just what I needed. It started out as a means to release my frustrations, a form of a punching bag so-to-speak, but ended up being an unforgettable golf lesson. What I realised was, once I freed up my body and let go; the ball went where I was aiming.
I would pick a point out on the horizon and let rip. The balls would splash into the ocean almost exactly in line with that point I was focussed on. It was amazing! I got back into the car with a whole new mindset.
The next day, which was the final round, I applied what I had discovered the day before. No matter how tight the fairway was, I picked my target and thought of nothing else but my target, let rip with the freedom of hitting out into the ocean and it was brilliant. I shot 67 and had a great day!
We can all get concerned about what might happen with our ball but if we can rid ourselves of our fears and focus only on where we want the ball to go, better golf is definitely on the horizon for all of us.

NSRCC’s Best Kept SecretThe nine-hole Executive Par-3 course is one of NSRCC’s best kept secrets. The course offers a great practice ground for a short game, is suitable for all ages and especially popular with families golfing with children. It offers a good view of the sea and boasts to be the first links-style Par-3 golf course in Singapore.
The course recently played host to the Tiger Cubs Golf Championships, a programme for school-based excellence (PSE) for golf - organised by Naval Base Primary School and supported by the Ministry of Education (MOE).
The event was held over three days and saw

Over 230 young golfers hit the greens at Kranji Sanctuary Golf Course (KSGC) for the 2nd leg of the HSBC Youth Golf Challenge held from 18-20 June.
The event provided a good training ground for youths to develop their game as well as play on different courses. Despite the pressure to secure top spot on the Order of Merit List and to represent Singapore at the HSBC Junior Golf Open, the youths remained unperturbed.
The competition was played over two rounds of 18 holes and based on stroke play, comprising of Division “A” (15-17 years old) and Division “B” (12-14 years old).
In the Boy’s “B” division, NSRCC’s Leonard Tee came in third, while Phoebe Nicole Tan came in second in the Girl’s “A” division.
The juniors proved that golf is not just a “Gentleman’s game” but can be a fun yet relaxing sport for teenagers to get together.
