Course website: https://sakai.rutgers.edu It is used extensively to post assignments, notes, extra problems, and any announcements - students are required to check the materials and announcements on this website frequently. Course Description: This course examines the principles, techniques, and uses of accounting in the planning and control of business organizations from a management perspective. Identified are cost behavior and classification, cost volume profit analysis, budgeting, performance measurement, and cost control etc. After completing the course, students should be able to: 1. Understand the difference between Managerial (internal) and Financial (external) accounting.

2. Identify the concepts of Cost Behavior, Cost Volume Profit Analysis, and Short-term Decision Making, as utilized in management decisions. 3. Explain the use of Budgeting, Activity-Based Costing and Management, Cost Control, and Performance Measurement as management planning and decision tools. 4. Explain the different costs that are included by management when pricing a good or service. 5. Construct a basic budgeted Income statement. 6. Recognize the ethical and/or behavioral implications inherent in utilizing cost information in managerial decision making. 7. Prepare an operating budget and understand where and how to acquire the necessary information. Prerequisite: 52:010:101 Introduction to Financial Accounting Class Procedure: Class sessions will be a combination of lecture, problem solving and discussion. Lecture outlines will be available on course website. You should come to class having read the chapter material and be prepared. Also, for each class session, you should bring to class a printed copy of that day’s lecture outline and take notes in class. The material covered in class will follow the lecture outline and is designed to clarify and complement the text material. Class Attendance/Participation: It is the student’s responsibility to regularly attend classes. Students are responsible for all announcements made during class. You are also responsible for getting notes and learning what was covered in class if you have to miss a class. You are highly encouraged to come to my office hour regarding to the class, homework and any other question. Classroom behavior should not interfere with the instructor’s ability to conduct the class or the ability of other students to learn from the instructional program. You are expected to participate in the class professionally. Professionalism consists of class participation, timeliness, cooperation, respect for colleagues and the instructor, etc. Examples of Professionalism:

Regular on-time class attendance; Minimize unscheduled personal breaks; Fully prepared for each class, e.g. reading all chapters prior to the class in which they are

covered; Respect views and opinions of your colleagues and instructor; Phones and wireless devices are turned off. Chatting with your friend, reading unrelated material such as newspaper or surfing on the

internet is strictly prohibited.

Grading: The course will consist of three exams, 12 in-class exercises and homework assignments. Your final grade will be determined according to the following formula:

Assignments Total Midterm exam I (Chapter 1-4) 25% Midterm exam II (Chapter 5-9) 25% Final exam 30% In-class exercises & Attendance 10% Homework assignments 10% Total 100%

Exams (80%): There are two mid-term exams and one final exam in this course. All exams are closed book, in-class exams. The format of each exam will be a combination of multiple choice questions and problems. Every effort will be made to give exams on the scheduled dates per the syllabus. The exams will be scheduled on the following dates/times: Exam 1 Class time, 2/23 Exam 2 Class time, 3/29 Final* Final week, TBA * The final exam must be taken during the final exam period. If final exam is taken before final exam week for any reason, you have to have permission from Area Head Dr. Sungsoo Kim. All dates are tentative and subject to change. Students are responsible for all announcements and schedule change made in class and on the course website. Make-up Exams or Quizzes:

Make-up exams or quizzes will be given only for documented medical or family emergencies, at instructor’s discretion. You have to provide documentation for emergencies. If you have no documentation, you will not get a make-up exam. A grade of 0 will be assigned for unexcused absences. If you have a medical/family emergency, let me know before the exam/quiz – no excuses will be accepted after the scheduled exam/quiz time.

Note: The medical report should mention that the student was too sick to take the exam on the exam date. Attendance and in-class exercise (5%+5%): Attendance is mandatory. You will have 12 in-class exercises during the whole semester. 10 best grades out of 12 will be counted. If you don’t take class, you will lose both the 5% of exercises and the 5% class attendance/participation. If you miss class and can’t submit the complete exercise in class due to medical reason, you have to provide the valid medical report for late submission. Make-up class exercise only counts as 5% and you will lose the other 5% attendance. Homework assignments (10%): You have homework for each chapter to practice what you learn. Usually you will have one week to finish your homework assignments. Later submission will be discounted at 80% (For example,

each homework has 10 points and the highest points will be 8 for late submission). All the homework must be submitted before the solution is posted on Sakai. Grading Scale: A 100 – 90.0% B+ 89.9 – 86.0% B 85.9 - 80.0% C+ 79.9 – 76.0% C 75.9 – 70.0% D 69.9 – 60.0% F 59.9 – 0.0%
