SCOPERustic Shingles are suitable for use as a roof cladding of buildings within the following scope:
• Class 1 and Class 10 buildings and Class 2 to Class 9 buildings; and,
• with timber roof framing; and,• where the roof slope is 15°or greater; and• situated in wind classification areas N1-N6 and C1-C4
RESPONSIBILITYThe designer, specifier or other party responsible for the project must ensure that the details in these installation instructions are appropriate for the intended application and that additional detailing is performed for specific design or any areas that fall outside the scope of this technical specification. For application outside the scope of this literature and details which are not provided herein, the architect, designer or engineer must undertake specific design and it must be ensured that their design meets the requirements of the BCA 2005.
STRUCTURETimber roof framing must be in accordance with AS 1684 or be to a specific design in accordance with AS/NZS 1170 and AS 1720.
Wind Loading - Rustic Shingles are suitable for use in Wind Classification areas N1-N6 and C1-C4.
HEALTH AND SAFETYPlease refer to the Manufacturers MSDS (Material Data Safety Sheets) for Identification of Hazards associated with the products used.
Always check with the contractor/builder for potential health and safety hazards on site. Ensuring scaffolding is soundly erected. Do not commence work until scaffolding and other site health and safety requirements meet the accepted standards.
MAINTENENCEWalkabilityRustic Shingle panels can be walked on their upper halves. Planks can be laid on the installed shingles (protected by carpeting, cardboard, etc.) to distribute the weight of foot traffic.
RepairsIn the event of limited damage, shingles can be repaired by capping over damaged panels with new panels. More extensive damages are repaired by removing existing roof sections
WARRANTYWhen installed to the specifications outlined in this manual, Rustic Shingle carries a 40-year warranty for materials and a 30-year chalk warranty.
GENERAL GUIDELINESRustic Shingle is a 304 mm x 609 mm interlocking aluminum panel pressed to simulate wood shakes, used for residential and commercial roofs.
Use only Classic Products' aluminum ringshank nails. Nails must be long enough to penetrate sheathing and at least 25 mm into solid plywood.
Use only accessories supplied by Classic Products, with matching finish. Do not apply copper, tin, galvanized steel, iron, terne or other dissimilar metal parts with these aluminum roofing systems.
Minimum pitch is 15°. On steep installations, distribute weight loads by placing planks under ladders or other scaffolding used on the roof.
Shingles are walkable, but care should be taken to step on the upper halves of the shingles, where the panels taper to lay on the decking.
Installation Sequence1. Prepare roof and apply underlayment.2. Install FASCIA STARTER STRIP.3. Install BARGE EDGE TRIM or BARGE TRIM in preparation for
later installation of BARGE CAPS. Also install VALLEY GUTTERS and FLASHINGS as needed
4. Install SHINGLES, left to right, eave to ridge, and HIP CAPS.5. Install RIDGE CAPS.

A:This flashing has a return flange to act as a channel for water to run down the roof under the shingles. Be careful not to flatten this return flange. Nails must not penetrate the flashing within this channel area. Fasten the flashing to the roof with Nail Clips 300 mm on centre. Also, the shingle at the bottom of this channel must be notched to allow the water to run out. Shingles must be secured with a Nail Clip outside the return flange.
B:Insulate aluminum flashings from contact with existing metal or masonry with a coating of roofing cement and a layer of roofing underlay.
C:Install shingles into this flashing with a 6 mm gap between the edge of the shingle and the inside of the flashing, to allow water to run down the roof.
D:If starting shingles out of this flashing and proceeding to the left, remember to stagger succeeding courses with full,
shingles.
E:Uphill flashings must nest inside or lap downhill by 150 mm and be sealed with Sealant (VP-275)
Roof PreparationRustic Shingles must be installed over plywood sheathing. Plywood must be minimum 12 mm thick, grade DD or better which complies with AS/NZS 2269. Where LOSP treated plywood is used, the solvents must be allowed to evaporate off for at least one week before installation of the roof underlay. The plywood face grain must be laid at right angles to supports. The sheets must be laid with staggered joints in a brick bond pattern. All sheet edges must be supported by blocking or framing. Nails or screws must be fixed in accordance with the following table.
UnderlayRoof underlay must be heavyweight or extra heavyweight roofing underlay as defined in Table 1 of AS/NZS 4200.1. Cover entire roof with underlay from left to right, eave to ridge. Allow underlay to overhang eaves by 40 mm, and extend up pipes and penetrations by 40 mm. Lap head and end joints 450 mm, lap successive courses 150 mm. Run additional underlay lengthwise up all valleys and hips and against all sidewalls. Nail 300 mm on centres using Plastic-Top Felt Nails (N-501). In areas with heavy ice or snow potential, use ice and water shield or similar underlay above overhanging eaves plus 609 mm past exterior wall line.

Fascia Starter Strip and Barge Treatment EFold overhanging underlay against fascia and apply Fascia Starter Strip (SH-402,) at the eaves. Nail to roof deck 300 mm on center. At a corner, snip the drip edge bead and top lock to bend Fascia Starter Strip around corner. (see Illustration 1c) Join two Starter Strips together by snipping 25 mm from top lock and sliding the two parts together, nested inside each other. (see Illustration 1a)Two barge treatments are available: An all-in-one lineal Barge Edge Trim, (SH-417) or Barge Caps, for a realistic shake look (SH-406). Barge Caps require the prior installation of Barge Trim (SH-405), and are only available for Rustic Shingle (SH-401).
Barge Edge Trim A C D EPlumb cut the trim, and snip according to Illustration 1a to accommodate Fascia Starter Strip. In cyclonic wind areas, face nail the drip edge to barge fascia with trim nails and apply Touch-Up Paint (SH-475). (see Illustration 1b)
Barge Trim & Caps A D EInstall Barge Trim (SH-405) fastening with Nail Clips 300 mm on center to the roof deck. Install shingles to overhang the barge edge by 20 mm. After shingle installation, Barge Caps (SH-406) are applied to the ends of the shingles and nailed to barge fascia through pre-punched holes, or riveted to shingles or Barge Trim. At the ridge, barge trim from one side should be bent down and lapped over the other.
Valley Gutter A D ELay Valley Gutter (SH-425) in place and trim Valley Gutter 20 mm past the eave and fold into Fascia Starter Strip. Top of Valley Gutter flashing should extend past top of valley by 100 mm and be folded down. Run 250 mm over downhill portions and seal. Shingles must be cut and bent to lap the Valley Gutter ridge dams. When a shingle course reaches the valley, the shingle that runs into the valley must be trimmed and folded over the Valley Gutter ridge dam (the raised fold between the middle of the valley and the return flange). The shingle should be marked 20 mm past the ridge dam at the top of the shingle and 45 mm past it at the bottom of the shingle. Draw a line to connect these marks and cut. Then fold the resulting angled flange down over the Valley Gutter ridge dam so that the bottom of the flange laps the flange of the shingle below (see Illustration 2a and 2b).
ShingleBegin shingle installation at lower left corner. Slide bottom lock of shingle into Starter Strip and into barge treatment. To fully engage shingle interlocks, tap with hammer handle until shingle locks securely on bottom and left. Drive one nail through the pre-punched nailing tab in the upper right corner of the shingle, and fasten two Nail Clips to the middle of the top lock and nail it also.
Continue installing shingles left to right, eave to ridge by engaging the bottom and left locks to surrounding shingles and/or Fascia Starter Strip. For maximum wind resistance and to avoid a "pattern" appearance on the roof, successive courses are staggered by starting with ½, ¾ and ¼ shingles. The fifth course from the eave should start with a full shingle, then the pattern repeats. Cut shingles and remove the left portion, keeping the section with the nailing tab. See Stagger Template on Rustic Shingle box for assistance.
Hip Caps DWhere the butt of a shingle reaches hip line, fold excess over hip line. Trim away excess which extends more than 75 mm past hip line. Use extra nailing clips on shingles at the hip. Hip Caps (SH-408) are installed by locking the front edge of each hip cap onto the butt edge of the shingles on either side of the hip. The top lock of the shingle is slit just enough to allow the Hip Cap to extend its full length up the roof. When you install the next course of shingles above the Hip Cap, face-nail through the shingle into the cap below, with three nails on either side of the hip line. These nails should be in a part of the shingle which will be covered by the next Hip Cap to be installed (see Illustration 3).
Ridge CapsThe ridge must be watertight before installing Ridge Caps. Either: 1) bend the top course of shingles over the ridge by at least 50 mm or 2) field-form a flashing to make the ridge watertight. Install a field-formed starter piece on the ridge at the gable end to lock the first cap over. The first cap must either install into Barge Edge Trim as a shingle would, or be bent and nailed to gable fascia if Gable Caps are used.Install Ridge Caps by engaging back flange into front flange of previously-installed caps. Fasten with two Nail Clips on each return flange (4 per cap). Ridge Caps may be started at both gable ends and work toward the middle, where a trimmed cap attached with sheet metal screws will join them. Seal screw heads (see Illustration 4).
When installing gutters, the underlay must extend down and inside the gutter. The drip leg of the Fascia Starter Strip must also be installed on the inside of the gutter. (see illustration 1d)
Lineal Hip and Ridge FlashingInstall timber vertically over the hip or ridge line. Install underlay at least 60 mm up both sides of the timber. Wrap an additional piece of underlay over the top of the timber, existing underlay and extend it approximately 70 mm out onto the roof. Install shingles up to the timber. Field-form a flashing to extend down and 100 mm out over the top of the shingles below. The top portion of the flashing should extend to near the top of the timber. This flashing should be formed for both sides of the timber. Field-form a cap to fit over the timber and side flashings. Fix the cap to the timber with aluminum ring shank nails.
Transverse Apron FlashingWhen a course of shingles ends at a vertical wall or other vertical surface, field-form a transverse apron flashing to extend down and 100 mm out over the top of the shingles below. The top portion of the transverse apron flashing must extend at least 100 mm up the wall and behind the wall cladding and building wrap. The roofing underlay must extend up the wall at least 100 mm, and it must be behind the flashing.

Flashing A B C D EParallel Apron Flashing (SH-421) is a “J” channel with a return flange on the roof deck and a leg extending up the wall which must be inserted behind the wall cladding. If the cladding is masonry, treat as transverse flashing, below (see Illustration 6a and 6b).

Chimney Flashing A B C EMake a 15 mm cut in the masonry above existing flashings and parallel to the roof deck. On the downhill side of the chimney, field-form a flashing to be received into this cut, extend down and 100 mm out on top of the installed shingles below. On sides of chimney, field-form flashings to be received into the cuts, extend down the chimney and 100 mm out onto the deck, where a 20 mm ridge must stand. The flashings must continue 75 mm beyond this ridge, where they must have a 15 mm return flange. Shingles must be formed over this ridge similar to Valley Gutter ridge dams, above. The downhill ends of chimney side flashings must rest on top of the downhill chimney flashing. The uphill side of the chimney must be cricketed and a flashing must be formed to be received into the 15 mm cut, extend down over the cricket, and rest on top of the chimney side flashings. The uphill portion of this flashing must lay beneath the shingles above. Parallel Apron can be used in place of the field-formed side flashings. The bottom of the Parallel Apron must bend above the lower shingles (see Illustration 8).
Vent Pipe Flashing A EBring underlay 40 mm up around pipe, and add an additional piece of underlay extending 450 mm to each side, the downhill side of which must rest on top of the shingles beneath the vent pipe flashing. Seal underlay seams, especially around pipe, with roofing cement. Bend 10 mm return flanges on the sides and top of the flashing. Install the vent pipe flashing (SH-531 to SH-534) when enough shingles have been installed that the bottom of the flashing will lay on top of shingles below. Fasten the flashing with Nail Clips attached to the return flanges. Then install shingles around the pipe, cutting as necessary to allow only the pipe and neoprene boot to show (see Illustration 9).
