In this assignment you will be exploring how the Rule of Thirds can be used to create visually effective photos.

You will look at the Rule of Thirds presentation on the class blog and then sign out a camera. You will use 1-2 class periods to shoot 10-15 photos. Your photos should be creative, using different angles of view, zoom, and subject matter. The photos should also be in-focus and properly exposed.

Using the Self-Evaluation checklist, you will select the strongest 8 photos to edit in Photoshop and submit for marking in a new folder called Rule of Thirds. This new folder should be located in your student file within your media arts folder.

You will edit the photos using the following tutorial.

Self-Evaluation checklistMy best 8 photos show that …

I have photographed a different subject in every photo

I have explored how things look at different angles

My photos make the viewer look at the subject in a new light

The photos are in-focus

The subject of my photo falls on one of the rule of thirds lines

I have checked the histogram to make sure there is equal distribution of lights and darks

My 8 photos are properly exposed

The most important parts of your image should fall on these 4 points. It can be helpful to use the grid setting on the screen of your camera, while composing your photos.
