INTRO

RUDIMENTAL GROOVES - VOLUME 1

Have you always wanted to know how to integrate rudiments like paradiddles, five stroke rolls, six stroke rolls, seven stroke rolls, nine stroke rolls, eleven stroke rolls etc. into grooves, in a practical, cool and effective way? Well, then you’ve come to the right place!

The main focus lies on the groove aspect and is mostly based on the backbeat of 2 and 4 which makes the exercises very applicable in terms of popular binary and ternary grooves -- be it as the groove itself, a groove variation or as a fill.

The starting point of the modular groove concept is mainly paradiddles, both as binary and ternary subdivisions. The book is best suited for those who have at least mastered the most most common paradiddles and rolls. So, take it easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy: You don’t have to have all 40+ rudiments under your belt.

You’ll start with different kinds of paradiddle stickings which will be our homebase, so to speak. Next, I’ll show you step by step how to transform those paradiddle patterns into dope grooves.

Volume 1 will be dealing with 16th-grooves combined with 32nd-notes. Volume 2 continues with the same concept and deals with 8th-note-triplet-grooves combined with 16th-triplet-notes/sixtuplets, until they get quite dense and complex.

According to the current status I have material for 3 morevolumes, which would be a total of 5 volumes. Volume 3 andvolume 4 are intended to provide an easier introduction tothe material by showing concrete examples of how tointegrate shorter chunks of sixtuplets and 32nd notes into8th and 16th note grooves(binary), as well as 8th note tripletgrooves(ternary).

THE MODULAR GROOVE CONCEPT...

... is based on the modular principle and relatively easy to understand. You gradually add modules to an existing pattern/groove to generate completely new and interesting variations. The beauty of this concept is that you don’t have to think about where and how rudiments should be installed in grooves, but the concept itself provides the drummer with a fascinating and elegant method to integrate different rudiments into grooves.

Once you have internalized this concept, you receive the key to new rhythm dimensions right in your hand. The intention of this book is to build up an adequate groove and fill vocabulary from which you can draw in different situations as a drummer. The long-term goal, however, is and remains what we understand by the magic word groove freedom, namely to punch out grooves freely — without a book, without specifications, freely according to feeling, but very much within this concept or style.

THE VISUAL DISPLAY OF RUDIMENTS

Too many words and explanations can be confusing and abstract in some situations, without having a clear understanding of what it’s all about. In this respect, I have decided to create a visual display of the rudiments, which will help to fulfill the requirement of a fast, simple and clear information recording. It is an indisputable fact that visual content can be captured and processed faster than long speeches. Even as an experienced user of rudiments, the large number of notes results in a certain confusion, which I aim to counteract with the visual display. The visual display also acts as a visual alignment to the actual groove-exercise concerning the used rudiments.

Finally, it should be noted that none of the volumes (volume 1 to volume 5) show all variations. There are simply too many possibilities for this. Further ideas would be permutation,transformation regarding subdivisions, transformation into odd time signatures, differentaccents/dynamics and backbeats and such. All these topics are dealt with on my YouTube channel and www.drumlounge.net over time. All in all, a very productive concept covering many areas of drumming. But enough chit-chat, let’s get crackin’...
