GIRLS. GOT. GAME.

SEPT / OCT 2014 RSVP 17

GIRLS. GOT. GAME. Game day is more than a sporting event. Southern girls know how to rock a game day outfit and it doesn’t mean breaking out the jeans, T-shirts, and football jerseys. That’s right, team loyalty is always in fashion and Southern belles take game-day attire to a whole different level as they strategically combine jewelry, dresses and boots in anticipation of these Saturday afternoons. Game day shipments are arriving and we asked our favorite local boutiques to show us some of the looks that we might see on the holy turf this season!

Lace is all the rage this season and you will see it everywhere. Patrice is wearing a maroon and lace sundress paired with a white statement necklace to really make this look pop. The white wedges bring the whole outfit together for a timeless look.

Hollie is just a doll in this bright orange silk top with zippered pocket, perfect for the early-season, hot football games. The navy shorts have a laced bottom that adds a feminine appeal to the entire ensemble. We added a navy necklace that brings the entire look together.

Alyssa is going all out in this sweet "southern girl" country look that will never go out of style. Her cream crochet top needed a pop of color underneath so we went with a crimson cami, paired with these sweet Miss Me denim shorts and of course, a Corral fringe cowgirl boot. This is a jaw-dropping look!

Marley is pulling for her team in an Alythea navy silk top with cut-out detail and Pamala’s oh-so-popular Auburn chevron shorts with a sash waist. Long necklaces are a must these days and she looks great with this long tear-drop necklace that jumps out on top of her navy top. Complete with orange wedges, she is ready to walk the plains.

Kristen is wearing a crimson Line & Dot tank with cream side detail. This T-back top is perfect for those early season games! Pair with our Genetic shya skinny denim in snow, the perfect off-white denim for after Labor Day. Finish the look with one of our amazing Vanessa Mooney necklaces, our seasonal whispers stacked bracelets, and Jen Boaz earrings.

Add a pair of our Paige or AG Denim jeans to take this look into fall. Our super popular silver Marcia Moran chandelier earrings are a must-have this season! Chance of rain? Keep those feet dry with our weather-proof Melissa shoes!

We love bold patterns and Sjohna’s crimson and white Dress by J&M Clothing gives a fresh take on the print trend. The waist tie gives it extra feminine flair. Pair this look with cowboy boots for an extra southern draw.

Ellen is stylish and comfy in this Carole’s Collections navy knit palazzo pant and orange Ikat printed blouse by S&S Collections. The navy two-tiered necklace pulls the whole look together. Lightweight and cool, this is a perfect pick for those hot September day games.

Sara is sure to score style points with this crimson detailed cut-out top by J&M Clothing and Houndstooth short by C.Luce. With so much detail in the top and such a bold pattern on the shorts, this is a great look to wear with your favorite everyday gold or silver jewelry.

Erin takes a cue from the refs and rocks out the stripes in this fashionable navy dress by GLAM. The solid sides tone the stripes and slim the waist line. Paired with a chunky orange necklace, this looks says touchdown!

Kiera is ready for a day tailgating to night game event! Snakeskin patterns are a big trend this fall. Be ready for the game with this Lavender Brown silk chiffon racerback tank. Pair it back to these J Brand “Stocking Fabric” Maria fit Jeans, to take comfort to a whole new level. This breathable and stretchy premium denim will hold you in the right places and keep you cool all at the same time! Accessories make an outfit and Kiera is wearing one of this year’s top finds: Flash Tattoos!!! She is gilded with Alabama’s beloved elephant and finishes her look with a “Chanel inspired” cross body purse and snakeskin earrings from Towne and Reese.

Madelyn is wearing our ultra-comfy and chic Olive and Oak maxi dress. This cotton dress will have you ready for game day in five minutes and works on various heights and body types! Grab a pair of flats or wedges and a few accessories and you are effortlessly ready to go! We layered a few necklaces from our local designers, Jenny Johnson Jewelry and Burgwin Studios to finish her look.

Patterned shorts and a classic top are always in style. Elizabeth is ready for a day game in our Drew shorts and Amanda Uprichard silk 3/4 Sleeve top. She makes battling the bright August sunlight so fashionable with our Tom Ford Miranda Sunglasses. We added a splash of orange from Jenny Johnson Jewelry and a navy and orange tote from Shiraleah to complete her Auburn game day look. To apply this look to your school, just swap our orange accessories and add your school’s coordinating color.

We are so in love with this easy-breezy look from Lavender Brown. Light and cool, this look can transition from day to night with no effort necessary. Throw on this hipster bag from Cinda B and you have a complete look that travels well from tailgate to tailgate. Her jewelry is applied from Flash Tattoos, Lena collection and stays with her for a few days, so no lost bangles in that “Victory Dance” at the end of the game!

A young man’s dream, vision and determination serve as the humble origins of a popular Montgomery establishment. Since he was 19-years-old, Waylen Littlefield has been cutting hair and cultivating a desire to become a salon owner. About six years ago, Waylen and his wife Elena, who have been married for 12 years, made his dream a reality with the opening of Waylen Joseph Salon.

While nervous about starting a new venture, Elena trusted in her husband’s vision. “He sees the big picture. We

started small and have watched it grow and build into something more,” she says. At first, Elena handled the books behind the scenes but is now more involved in the day-to-day workings of the salon. Together, Elena and Waylen form a dynamic duo and are focused on one thing: bringing the salon to the next level.

And that next level provides you, as a client, endless opportunities for fabulous, healthy hair. In a casual, welcoming atmosphere boasting eight talented stylists, you are sure to find one that matches your personality,

Services include haircuts, highlights and coloring, perms, keratin treatments, and facial waxing. Prepping for a hot date or a fun night out with the girls? Make an appointment to get fixed up and leave with a glamorous blow-out and style. Waylen Joseph carries two product lines - the popular Moroccan Oil and ARROJO. Both are a style of education and way of training with a product line for all hair types created by Nick ARROJO, the celebrity stylist most notably recognized as the hair genius behind TLC’s show “What Not to Wear.” Stylists are also trained to do razor cuts, which give you a textured yet smooth layered style.

What makes Waylen Joseph stand out from other salons is their staff. The crew is handpicked and works seamlessly with one another. They are a team and all put in what it takes to help each other.

Along with its awesome group, Waylen Joseph is proud of their new salon location. The salon moved to Hampstead this past December and has loved every minute of it. They were able to work with their landlord, Taylor Chandler, LLC, while their space was being built so they have a tailored salon that works perfectly for them.

A family-owned business, top stylists and a focus on making the client happy - Waylen Joseph has everything you could want in a salon.

Feature Story

Oktoberfest

by Hans N. Franzman

Ask most Montgomerians what Oktoberfest is all about and the common answer will be "BEER." The stereotypical image of a buxom German waitress delivering frothy mugs of brew has become symbolic of the word "Oktoberfest" in our culture. But over the past few decades, this highly-imitated party has morphed from a folksy Bavarian beer festival into the world’s largest and most famous "Fun Fair" with an activity playlist now loaded with all types of hits. Nevertheless....Oktoberfest is still about the BEER!The annual spectacle in southern

Germany is not vastly different in principle from other festivals and events here in our part of the world. The basic premise is always to have fun and the folks in Munich have been perfecting it for over 200 years. Oktoberfest is steeped in tradition and has been described by outsiders as everything from a “pig roast on steroids” to a “beer-fueled Mardi Gras without the beads.” It is hugely popular and draws thousands of young celebrants dressed in lederhosen and dirndls to binge for hours in marathon drinking and ribald cavorting to the brassy

sounds emanating from the clusters of oompah bands that blast from every tent and beer garden. The rhythmical-polka thump generates a concentric ripple effect of drunken chicken dancers like a tuba cast upon the sea of inebriates, many of whom continue slamming beers until they too become Bierlichen ("beer corpses")! Think beer.....and lots of it. Think drunk people....and lots of them. How did this bash all get started? The first Oktoberfest shindig was held in 1810 in Munich as a celebration of the wedding of the Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig and his bride Princess

Therese von Saxe-Hildburghausen (now that’s a mouth full). The original "Volksfest" (People’s Fair) happened on the fields in front of the city gates and an estimated 40,000 town folk gathered to frolic, view the regal parade and attend horse races. The jamboree was such a rip-roaring success that it became an annual event, cancelled only for wars and a cholera epidemic or two. The festival grounds were subsequently named Theresienwiese ("Therese’s meadow") in honor of the Crown Princess and, to the locals, the event is often simply referred to as "Wiesn" after the colloquial name of the fairground. This minimum 16-day festival is steeped in tradition and now runs from late September until the first Sunday in October, unless that Sunday falls before the 3rd...German Unity

Day. This year it begins on Saturday, September 20th and ends on Sunday, October 5th. Annual attendance has grown to well over 6 million party-goers who travel from around the globe, lending an international flare to the once regional event. The festival is free to everyone, and the throngs gather in Munich to do two things, eat and drink. Today’s Oktoberfest is all about the food and of course, the beer....lots and lots of beer!Oktoberfest activities now sprawl over 75 acres of land and boast over 30 tents, some of which seat almost 10,000 people. The eager multitudes line up early each day to vie for the prime spots at the long trestle tables in the most popular tents. Major German breweries dominate the scene and their elaborate temporary beer

halls feature an endless supply of their specially-crafted products. According to estimates, more than 8 million mass (liters) of beer were consumed during last year’s event. Tents are characterized by their own traditional identity, prominence, music, attractions and, of course, beer. For example, the Schottenhamel tent is the oldest and is widely considered the premier tent because it is where the festival officially begins. Since 1950, no beer can be served at Oktoberfest until noon of the first day of the festival when the Lord Mayor of Munich, with all due pomp and ceremony, swings a mallet and taps the first keg of "Oktoberfest" beer with the cry of "O’zapft is" (“it is tapped”)! After presentation of the first beer to the Minister-President of the State of Bavaria signaling that the party is on,

all of the other tents can begin serving their amber nectar to the assembled, thirsty masses.Visitors to the tents drink beer non-stop but also consume ample quantities of food in between chugs, most of which consist of traditional hearty fare. Although Germany is not as well known for its exquisite cuisine like other European countries (such as France and Italy) several popular culinary offerings seem perfect for the occasion and are renown for prepping the stomach for a session of guzzling at the stein table. Local specialties include Hendl (roast chicken), Schweinebraten (roast pork), Schweinshaxe (grilled ham hock), Würstl (sausage), Brezen (pretzel), Knodel (dumplings), Sauerkraut (cabbage) and tasty charcoal-fired Steckerlfisch, which

translates to fish on a stick and is delivered like a footlong corn dog....except different! The only beers which can be served at the festival and officially designated as an "Oktoberfest Beer" must conform to the Reinheitsgebot, a Bavarian Purity Law enacted back in 1516. The final product must be a minimum of 13.5% Stammwurze (approximately 6% alcohol by volume) and it must be brewed within the city limits of Munich. The primary breweries that can meet this criteria are Spaten, Lowenbrau, Augustiner, Hofbrau, Paulaner and Hacker-Pschorr. Despite these restrictions there are plenty of beer choices and the inebriates never complain as long as their tankard is full. After all.....Oktoberfest really is all about BEER!

Kid One Transport System is in the business of moving children, and now it’s asking you to get moving for children. Founded in 1997, Kid One provides free rides to health care appointments for children and expectant mothers with little or no means of transportation. It’s the only nonprofit of its kind in Alabama and among a few similar organizations nationwide. In 17 years, Kid One has completed more than 275,000 transports covering hundreds of thousands of miles. And now, Kid One wants you to add mileage to your physical odometer by participating in the Transporter Triathlon on September 13, 2014, at The Waters in Pike Road, Alabama. The USA Triathlon-sanctioned event includes a 300-yard lake swim, 12-mile bike ride, and 3-mile run. If you’ve never competed in a triathlon, this one falls in the “sprint” category, so it’s

a good one to get you started (the running portion, alone, of a full tri is more than eight times longer). Registration is open until September 10, 2014, and you can sign up as an individual or register as a team. The race is limited to the first 175 entries. Those spots will fill up fast, so better move quickly. Your registration includes a T-shirt and post-race food and drinks. But most importantly, it includes the means by which Kid One can continue to operate and help thousands more mothers and children in need. The idea of not having reliable transportation is foreign to most people, but the children Kid One serves live that reality everyday. That was what Hoover firefighter Russell Jackson discovered when he began researching the need for health transportation services in Alabama. Mass transit is often limited even in urban areas and

A letter from a Kid One Transport Mom

Dear Kid One Transport,

Haley and I are truly grateful for the services Kid One Transportation has provided for us. Kid One has become a big part of our family and has provided the help we have so often needed. Haley was born February 3rd 2004 and nearly died shortly after. She was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect and has had several issues with her heart including a coarctation of the aorta, a small left ventricle, an abnormal mitral valve and multiple VSO’s. She started out with five holes in her heart and also has Mitral stenosis. She has had three open heart surgeries, five regular heart catheterizations, and two heart caths with balloon dilation.

Haley is and still remains the strongest person in our family. When I remember all the surgeries and procedures that Haley has had, I often reflect on the countless times Kid One has continued to be there for us. Kid One has some of the most wonderful people driving for them. When I think of a hero, I don’t think of Spiderman, Wonder Woman or even Captain America. I think of those who have answered the call of duty. The men and women who work for Kid One have become our heroes. They have a huge love for the children and they are committed to their work. They wake up early in the morning to start their day, some of them driving long distances to pick up families in need.

One of the things I appreciate the most is when the driver takes time to share his or her faith and their own stories about their families. Life is, without a doubt, a challenge. We grow together when we share with each other. At the risk of telling my age, “back in the day” Tina Turner sang a song that makes me smile and think of you at Kid One Transportation -- “You’re Simply the Best.”

God Bless You!

In Christian love,

Sharon, Haley’s mom

SANCTIONED EVENT

And the Crowd Goes Wild!A season of change has come for the Southeastern Conference

Gone is the Bowl Championship Series, which the league dominated. Gone is perhaps the best stable of senior quarterbacks the south has ever seen. And with that, perhaps prematurely, gone is the thought nationally that the SEC will remain “the king of the hill.”

One should be advised, however, to hold off on the removal of the crown just yet. Despite Auburn’s last-second loss to Florida State in the 2013 BCS title game that ended the conference’s seven-year run of national championships, the SEC still has plenty of pop in its bat. Gunslingers like Johnny Manziel, Aaron Murray, Zach Mettenberger, A.J. McCarron and Connor Shaw may have moved on, but the “bullpen” appears well-stocked, and another year of SEC envy from fans across the country not only seems possible, it seems quite probable.

As we enter the era of the College Football Playoff, here is a look at the best league in the land – 2014 edition. We’ll concentrate on Auburn and Alabama, with a few words and predictions on the others. In this state, with a few exceptions, does anyone really care about the other 12?

AuburnIn the West Division, you have to start with Auburn, the defending league champion. Sure, 2013 at times appeared to be magical, but it’s always about the scoreboard. The development of Nick Marshall through the season was phenomenal, and his reported improvement in passing accuracy makes him even more of a threat. The schedule is difficult, and replacing three guys who will now be playing on Sundays can’t be understated, but the Tigers will be strong, perhaps even better than they were a year ago. PREDICTION: 10-1 headed into the Iron Bowl in Tuscaloosa, with more to come about that later.

SEC Sports Predictions

SEPT / OCT 2014 RSVP 35

AlabamaAlabama lost McCarron and C.J. Mosley, and a few more key contributors, but reloading has become commonplace in Tuscaloosa. Unlike Auburn, the schedule appears favorable, with the Crimson Tide most-likely being a decided favorite in at least three of the four road games. The trip to Baton Rouge will be a huge hurdle, but there doesn’t seem to be much else out there to derail the Tide until, well … I think you know. PREDICTION: 10-1 headed into, without being redundant, the final regular-season game of the year.

On a side note involving the Tigers and the Tide, let’s not get so close to the forest that we fail to enjoy the look of the trees. As football fans in Alabama, it appears that we are about to enjoy a period of time when BOTH Auburn and Alabama are at or near their best, with each having the goal of winning the national championship every year. We’ve had a year here or there when both teams were among the best in the country, but the stretch we’re currently in and should continue in is unprecedented. Enjoy it. And try to stay classy, Alabama.

LSULSU will be very good again, with a roster filled with incredible talent. The development of a potential freshman backfield featuring quarterback Brandon Harris and running back Leonard Fournette will be the key. PREDICTION: 9-3

Texas A&MWhat will Texas A&M do without Johnny Football? Probably still score a lot of points with a lot of returning talent on offense, but most likely will surrender its fair share on defense. Kevin Sumlin is a great recruiter, and the Aggies should remain a factor in the league for years to come. PREDICTION: 8-4

Ole MissOle Miss has a two-year starter back at quarterback, but inconsistency has been his problem. An excellent quarter followed by a poor one has led to more than a couple of Rebel downfalls. A young roster with great potential will have Ole Miss on the plus side of the ledger. PREDICTION: 7-5

36 RSVP SEPT / OCT 2014

Mississippi StateMississippi State returns dynamic quarterback Dak Prescott, and he’s just one of 18 starters back for the Bulldogs. The expectations seem to be once again unrealistically high, and if State doesn’t meet or exceed them, the chair in Coach Dan Mullen’s office will continue to get warmer. PREDICTION: 7-5

ArkansasArkansas will once again be the worst team in the West, but you’d never know it listening to Coach Bret Bielema. Always outspoken, the second-year coach believes his team will be better in 2014. With a new quarterback, and a roster that still doesn’t stack up with the best in the West, most don’t believe him. PREDICTION: 4-8 A quick look at the East Division (quick because, as stated earlier, Auburn and Alabama aren’t in it) reveals a tough nut to crack. If you’re buying that Florida will be healthy, Tennessee improved and Georgia, South Carolina and Missouri won’t miss a beat with relatively new quarterbacks, then you’ve got a neck-and-neck horse race on your hands.

GeorgiaMark Richt has a fifth-year senior in Hutson Mason at quarterback and perhaps the best running back in the nation in Todd Gurley, and with eight starters back on defense the ‘Dawgs should be tough. PREDICTION: 10-2.

FloridaThis is a key year for Gator coach Will Muschamp, and with a healthy Jeff Driskel and 15 other returning starters, the belief here is that Florida will have the turnaround season this year somewhat reminiscent of Auburn’s in 2013. PREDICTION: 9-3.

South CarolinaSteve Spurrier wakes up every morning saying, “We’ve won 11 games each of the past three years, and that’s never been done before.” Dylan Thompson will replace Shaw at quarterback, and he is good, but the loss of some key contributors on defense, including superstud Jadeveon Clowney, will change Spurrier’s tune. PREDICTION: 8-4

MissouriMissouri was in the boat with Auburn as the shockers of 2013, but the guess here is it will come back down to earth in 2014. Maty Mauk, who performed admirably at quarterback last season while James Franklin was out with an injury, has full control of the wheel. PREDICTION: 7-5

TennesseeTennessee will be better this season, if for no other reason than head coach Butch Jones has improved the roster talent considerably. It’s way too early for the Vols to be a real factor in the division, although that could be coming sooner than most people think. PREDICTION: 7-5

VanderbiltWhile Vanderbilt could still be fairly good under new coach Derek Mason, the transition year is usually not the best. The chances of another nine-win season are almost non-existent, and a winning record seems to be the only legitimate goal for the ‘Dores. PREDICTION: 6-6

KentuckyKentucky has shown signs of improvement under now second-year coach Mark Stoops, but football success is relative in Lexington. The Wildcats think they can compete in the SEC in this sport, but reality tells us it’s the round ball – not the oblong one – by which Kentucky athletics is measured. PREDICTION: Kentucky 4-8.

Remember that Iron Bowl in Tuscaloosa I referred to earlier? It’s going to amount to a playoff game for the Tigers and the Tide once again, with the winner headed to Atlanta with a chance to win the conference title and a spot in the playoffs. Count on Alabama finding a way, just as its counterpart did a year ago, in both the Iron Bowl against Auburn and in the SEC title game against Georgia.

That would put one SEC team into the four-team playoff bracket. Could there be two? You bet there could, because when you’re dealing with the best league in the country, the more things change, the more they stay the same.

If you’re from the South, then you know the four seasons of the year are spring, summer, winter and football. TRAVIS KINGAn ordained Anglican priest under the Anglican Church in North America, Reverend Travis Warren King is the Assistant to the Rector at ChristchurchXP in Montgomery. An Indianapolis, Indiana native, Travis has seen first-hand the southern hospitality of the Montgomery area. “Although not all may share my faith and beliefs, this community has always been welcoming and encouraging,” he says. Travis graduated in 2000 from DePauw University with a bachelor’s degree in computer science. Following his graduation, Travis served in various capacities of the ministry in Indiana and Texas before graduating from Beeson Divinity with a Master of Divinity degree in 2011. Travis works to build up local programs such as Common Ground, Reality & Truth Ministries, and House to House. As he explains, “They have provided incredible opportunities for our church members to get involved in making a difference in Montgomery.” He also serves the community through The GiG - a program at his church that is committed to volunteerism. It is easy to see his love for Christ and his enthusiasm for making an impact in the community. Travis loves the kind and helpful spirit of Montgomery, the shows at ASF and cheering for the Biscuits. Travis is a self-proclaimed foodie and loves to cook, snowboard and participate in anything outdoors. He recently married Kelly Talbot King and they have two German short-haired pointers.

CHRISTY PRUITT-HAYNES

Although Christy Pruitt-Haynes moved to Montgomery only two years ago, she has already left her mark on the city. The Nashville native earned her bachelor’s degree in personnel and labor relations from the University of Maryland as well as a master’s degree in human resources development from Indiana State University. Christy’s resume also includes 21 years of professional experience with organizations like MTV Networks and the NBA where she held leadership roles. After moving to Montgomery, she took on her most recent project as founder and president of CORE Consulting. Christy has experience in developing human capital strategies that improve the bottom line of organizations and credits past obstacles for her strong social and communication skills. “I was typically ‘the only’ in many situations: the only female, the youngest, the only minority. It was sometimes difficult to be ‘the only,’ but it was an honor I took seriously and used to develop a fierce sense of confidence,” she says. She views her role in helping clients as “a great honor and responsibility” as they instill trust in her to shape future careers and companies. Despite her busy schedule, Christy serves on the Board of Directors for Saint James School and supports the school’s marching band as treasurer. In her free time, she enjoys exploring Montgomery’s emerging arts scene with her husband, daughter and niece. This coffee and wine enthusiast also loves entertaining and welcomes more than 50 people to her home once a month for events like barbecues, wine competitions and game nights.

ADAM WARNKE

Adam Warnke started his event company Lightning Line with hopes of bringing innovative events to Montgomery. His project stemmed from conversations with his friends about the notion that the city needed to do more to attract and retain young people. “We regularly discussed the fact that a lot of talented young people move to Montgomery, but buy into the perception that there is nothing to do or that there aren’t great opportunities and potential here. Really it’s because they didn’t give it a chance,” he says. With the use of Lightning Line, Adam is dedicated to changing that perception by working with the city’s inventive community to bring fresh concepts to Montgomery. Adam partnered with Meg Lewis of the Montgomery Convention and Visitor Bureau and Boyd Stephens of Netelysis for #revolutionMGM, the company’s latest project dedicated to strengthening Montgomery’s technological and creative presence in the South. A Cullman native and an Auburn University graduate, Adam insists that the biggest influence on his success aside from his parents has been his wife, Melissa Johnson of WSFA 12 News. The high school sweethearts dated throughout college and have been married for three years. He explains that her “make it happen” personality motivated him to turn his ideas and passions into reality. Aside from owning Lightning Line, Adam is a chemical engineer and territory manager for Garratt-Callahan and serves on the E.A.T. South Junior Board, TEDx River Region Advisory Board, and St. Paul Lutheran Church Board of Directors. He loves being plugged in to Montgomery’s creative community and enjoys meeting people along the way.

LAUREN BISHOPLauren Bishop has been in the business of skincare and beauty for ten years now. After graduating from Huntingdon College in 2003, she attended Skinactics School of Aesthetics in Birmingham, from which she graduated in 2004. Lauren grew up in Monroeville, Alabama, and gives a great deal of credit to her parents, her husband Jim, and her former employers, Dr. Rick Graves and Kim Williamson, for the success she has achieved. Lauren says the biggest challenge she faced was having the confidence needed to succeed in her career – an obstacle she has overcome by continuously educating herself and gaining knowledge through both product and spa-business training. As the owner and aesthetician at Montgomery Aesthetics MedSpa, Lauren believes she is one of few people who can honestly say they have fun every single day at their job. She credits this to her fabulous employees and loyal clients, and says they all share one thing in common – they each want to look their best and have amazing skincare, and that is exactly what Lauren delivers. Lauren is involved in His Vessel Ministries, a downtown Montgomery nonprofit, Christian organization that offers teachings for women on how to live a godly life. Within the organization, she also works with a ministry called Watchmen Over the City of Montgomery, which ensures that everyday someone from HVM is praying over the city of Montgomery, as well as other ministries throughout the city, state and nation. Montgomery’s sense of community is Lauren’s favorite thing about the city. Lauren and Jim have two dogs, Rosemary and Vidalia. In her spare time, Lauren says she enjoys cooking and fine dining.

RICK HENDRICK

While you may not recognize his face, any long-time resident of Montgomery can surely recognize Rick Hendrick’s voice. For the last 17 years, Rick’s voice has been a ubiquitous presence in Montgomery, whether on 95.1 The Fox, where he serves as program director, or as the PA announcer for the Montgomery Biscuits. Rick has also worked as the PA announcer for various other teams, including the Highland Home football team and the now disbanded Montgomery Wings baseball team, and has filled in at both Crampton Bowl for ASU and high school play-off games and Regions Field for the Birmingham Barons. Rick credits his father as having the most influence on his success. A Southern Baptist Minister, his father always told Rick that his voice was a talent given by God and that Rick should use it in any way possible to glorify him. Rick says he loves connecting with listeners on a daily basis, whether in their cars, at their work desks, or in their backyards. A graduate of Jefferson Davis high school, Rick says his work in the media has allowed him to witness exciting changes that have taken place in Montgomery over the last 17 years. He says he may be biased, but he especially enjoys the Biscuits and what they have done to transform Montgomery’s downtown scene. Rick serves on the Board of Directors for the March of Dimes, emcees for numerous charity events involving the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the American Diabetes Association, and hosts a 48-hour toy drive every year with the US Marines Toys for Tots program. Rick has three children and one grandchild, and while not married, is in a relationship. In his spare time, Rick loves to play golf and go to the movie theater, and is an active member of Church of the Highlands.

HEATHER WORBY

Although Heather Worby was born a California girl, she now happily calls Montgomery her home. Heather grew up in southern California and moved to Alabama in 2000 to attend Auburn University on a swimming scholarship. While at Auburn, Heather was a member of three National Championship teams and won the 200-free individual title in 2003. She went on to compete for a spot on the 2004 United States Olympic swimming team in 2004. Heather says that as a child her parents encouraged her to work hard and set high goals for herself, and it is this attitude that she still follows today and one she credits much of her success to. After graduating in 2005 from Auburn with a bachelor’s degree in math education, Heather moved to Montgomery where she began her career as a mortgage originator. Heather admits she was initially nervous about the move to a new city, but also says that competition is one of her strengths and played a key role in her success. She also gives credit to the friendly and inviting attitudes of Montgomery’s citizens, as many of her clients are referrals. Heather loves that her job allows her to assist individuals and couples in finding a new home, one of the biggest and most important purchases they will ever make, and says it is quite gratifying to share in her clients’ joy when they become homeowners. Heather has found various avenues to give back to the community, including working with Soroptimist International, a professional women’s organization that helps women in need. The group’s fundraising efforts provide for working mothers attempting to go back to school and also offers support to a local teen group home. Heather and her husband Ben have a two-year-old daughter, Ella Reese, and are anxiously awaiting the arrival of another daughter in October. In their spare time, they enjoy participating in local events, as well as traveling to the beach, Lake Martin and Atlanta.

NICKOLE MARTEL

While attending college in Auburn, Nickole Martel started out as an elementary education major, but like many students soon switched paths and changed her major to marketing. Nickole’s professional career began as a customer service representative for a construction software company, UDA Technologies. She quickly moved up the company ladder and became the Lead Coordinator of the Sales and Marketing team. It was during this time that Nickole discovered her passion for working with clients and in customer service. She moved on to become the fundraising coordinator for the Muscular Dystrophy Association in Montgomery before accepting her current role as the private events director at the Capital City Club. Nickole says she feels blessed to be in her position at this time as it has allowed her to “watch the club grow and transform right before my eyes, and be able to share all of the exciting changes and improvements with my clients!” She loves being a part of her clients’ memorable moments in life, ranging from anniversary dinners and birthday celebrations to weddings. She also enjoys helping local businesses execute client appreciation dinners, conduct meetings away from their office, or assist with business presentations. Nickole credits her grandmother, who was raised in France and spent many years as a single mother raising her own two children in the United States, as one of her greatest influences. Nickole says she learned from her grandmother that what may initially look like a problem can actually be an opportunity to face a challenge, overcome it, and better one’s self in the process. In addition to her role at the Capital City Club, Nickole is also actively involved with the Downtown Business Association and the group MGM revolution.

Business Spotlight

If you think insurance agents are a dime a dozen in this town, you might be right, but you’ve also never met Breck Honea. He’s not your average polyester suit insurance agent. As the owner and operator of Honea Insurance and Financial Services, he has grown his business to be one of the most successful State Farm agencies in the Southeastern zone. And nationally speaking, Breck is consistently one of the top agents in the country. A Mississippi native and alum of the University of Southern Mississippi,

Breck is a Montgomery transplant, but he has fully embraced his adopted home. Breck and his wife Carolyn, also a Mississippi native and Mississippi State graduate, enjoy life as young parents to daughters Larkin, age two, and Harleigh, who is four months. The growing family spends their time relaxing by the neighborhood pool, riding bikes and spending quality time in their spacious, but comfortable, East Montgomery living room. When the family man isn’t enjoying watching Larkin’s new found love of

“’nastics class” at a local gymnastics gym, he’s continually growing his business. In fact, in the first six years that Breck has owned his agency, currently located on Atlanta Highway, it doubled in size and in 2011 allowed him a spot in the Chairman’s Circle of Agents, which consists of the top 5% of State Farm agents nationwide. He has maintained that spot in the Chairman’s Circle for the last three years. Breck isn’t just focused on auto, home and life policies, though those are the bread and butter of his successful

agency. Many fail to realize that some State Farm agencies are able to provide financial services as well. Breck is one of those agents. He is licensed in securities, Series 6 and Series 63, with well over $3 million assets under his management. The financial services arm of Breck’s State Farm agency is continuing to grow, and lines well with what he learned at Southern Miss: Breck is a graduate of the school’s finance program, with an emphasis in insurance. He also holds several financial industry designations and certifications, most notably Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC) and Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU). Breck might run one of the most successful State Farm agencies in the

South, but he’s still a Mississippi boy at heart and cares about his community and his employees. Every year at Christmas, the employees gather at the Honea home for a little holiday cheer. Each year Breck makes sure to support various community causes at the family’s church, St. James United Methodist. Breck’s wife Carolyn is also invested in the community, and along with her best friend, Alexia Henig, opened the popular clothing destination Splurge, in 2013, after working full-time at the agency for four years.

Splurge, located off Carmichael Road in the Henig Furs building, caters to the young, conservative, but still very fashion-forward ladies of the River Region. Splurge stocks unique

and affordable pieces ranging from everyday wear to special occasions, as well as a vast accessories collection that isn’t available in other local boutiques. But family businesses require all hands on deck, and Carolyn is the first to jump in and help Breck when the agency might need some extra support, or one of the four full-time employees is out sick.

As a little girl growing up in Bulgaria, Delyana Lazarova was enchanted with both music and theatre, but even she did not know at such an early age the success that awaited her in the world of classical music. Delyana was born in Plodiv, Bulgaria; a province considered by many to be one of the cultural hubs of the country. Her father works in journalism, and her mother was (and still is) a pianist and composer for the theatre. Delyana spent many

of her formative years in the theatre, and quickly memorized every line of the plays she watched in rehearsals. It was during this period that Delyana says she developed her passion for music and theatre.

From a very young age, Delyana knew she wanted to be a performer. And while the theatre fascinated her, she learned that acting was not the medium for which she was destined to use a stage. At the tender age

of five, Delyana took the entrance exam at the elite Dobrin Petkov Music School in Plodiv, where she passed a solfeggio exam (solfeggio is a music education method used to teach pitch, sight singing, and sight reading) and was accepted for admission. After her acceptance into the school, Delyana decided on the piano as the instrument she wished to be trained in, just like her mother – but teachers spoke with her mother about Delyana’s talent and

ear for the violin, and suggested she focus her training on it instead. The next night, Delyana’s mother took her to a concert at the symphony, where a famous Bulgarian violinist performed Mendelssohn’s “Violin Concerto in E Minor.” Delyana still remembers the awe-inspiring performance, and she happily agreed that she would study the violin in school.

Delyana graduated from Dobrin Petkov, receiving a special award for high musical achievements. After graduation, she applied across the Atlantic to Louisiana State University, where the professor she wanted to study under was teaching. Delyana received a full scholarship to LSU and at the age of 19, packed her bags and moved from Bulgaria to Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She studied for three years at LSU, and jokes that the moment she realized how to spell “GEAUX TIGERS” she had already moved on to the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, where she completed bachelor’s, master’s and artist’s diplomas in violin performance. Delyana gives a great deal of credit to Professor Fuks and Professor Mardirossian, and says that in the world of music, who you study under is one of the most important parts of your training – and that it was both luck and a privilege to study under these teachers.

While finishing her degrees, Delyana began applying for several professional jobs across the country, one of which was the Concertmaster and Artist in Residence position at the Montgomery Symphony. Musicians from all over the world apply for this prestigious position. A group of four is selected and then considered on an individual basis for the position. After an audition, interview with board members and Maestro Hinds, Delyana was chosen for the coveted position, and Montgomery soon became her new home.

Delyana says she has been overwhelmed by the generosity and welcoming nature of the Montgomery community. She is especially grateful for the late Helen Steineker, who helped ensure Delyana’s smooth transition into Montgomery, and for her friend and local artist Susan Starr. Delyana and Susan met through Bob Vardaman at a small party in his house where Delyana performed. At the time of the party, Delyana and pianist Anna Petrova were busy preparing for a series of upcoming recitals in Montgomery, Steinway Hall in New York City, Spain and Bulgaria. Over the course of their conversation, Susan generously offered to design the gowns that Delyana and Anna would wear for these performances. They learned and performed “Sonata No. 3 for Violin and Piano” by composer Enescu, a piece Delyana says is “truly a genius work of art.” And what made the performances

even better were the hand-painted silk gowns Susan designed for the musicians, which Delyana says “united our talents together into something bigger.”

This is Delyana’s last year as a Violin Fellow in Montgomery. She says she is proud of what she has accomplished here, and feels she has dedicated her life to inspiring people and allowing them to experience through music something everyday life cannot offer. She hopes the community will continue to support the Symphony and attend the Fellows’ Recital Series at the Museum of Fine Art. One of the first things Delyana said in her interview was “Music is a universal language and goes directly to the heart.” She has certainly proven that statement to be true in her time here in Montgomery, a city that is fortunate to have attracted such a talented individual.

Bullethas the goods

The

You are likely familiar with Shashy’s Bakery and Fine Foods “brick and mortar” location on Mulberry Street, where owner Jimmy Shashy serves up breakfast and lunch using the freshest ingredients, like those Curb Market vegetables featured on his daily vegetable plates. Well, Jimmy has taken that same fresh approach and applied it to a stationary food truck called The Bullet (and by stationary food truck, I mean a refurbished Airstream RV that Jimmy leases from River & Rail, LLC) located in downtown Montgomery at the corner of Tallapoosa and Commerce Streets and across from the Renaissance Hotel. Since opening in June 2014, Shashy’s Bakery and Fine Foods at The Bullet has provided the downtown business crowd, as well as out-of-town guests staying or attending conventions nearby, a great, new lunch option in the ever-expanding downtown restaurant scene.

“Quick, simple, tasty and easy on the pocketbook.” That is how a friend describes Shashy’s at The Bullet. I couldn’t have said it better myself, and here’s why.

Quick You work downtown and you want to get lunch, but you don’t have much time – at least not enough to

sit down and be served at a restaurant. Those days are perfect for grabbing lunch at Shashy’s at The Bullet. On every visit, I’ve never had to wait longer than a minute or two to place my order at the window with LeeAnne. Another minute or two later, my name is called and I have my lunch in hand. If you never see a line at The Bullet, it’s not due to a lack of patrons; it is a result of their prompt service. Shashy’s has already built up a steady, regular clientele – several people from my office fall into this category, including me. And if you’re in need of lightning quick service, feel free to call ahead and place your order (334.430.2063). After picking up your food, you can eat there under one of the umbrellas that cover picnic tables on the grass or take it back to your office, hotel room, or wherever you want to eat lunch that day.

Simple and Tasty The daily chalkboard menu features mostly sandwiches and salads -- ranging from a simple tomato sandwich (Curb Market tomatoes on white or wheat bread, with mayo, salt and pepper) to a buffalo chicken wrap (marinated chicken breast with buffalo wing sauce and sliced celery, with a choice of ranch or blue cheese sauce) to made-fresh-daily

chicken salad (served over a bed of lettuce with fresh fruit or as sandwich on white bread). There’s also a house salad composed of mixed greens, tomato, feta, cucumber, and dressing, with the option to add chicken and even Jimmy’s Seafood Gumbo (with gulf shrimp, crabmeat, and DeRamus smoked sausage). And don’t forget the beef tenderloin or grilled chicken sandwich (Jimmy’s grilled chicken or tasty beef tenderloin, lettuce, tomato, mayo on a house-made bun), BLT, or the Conecuh Sausage hot dog (grilled Conecuh on a homemade bun topped with sautéed red bell peppers, caramelized onions and sauerkraut). All simple dishes served in a white paper bag from a food truck, but with the same freshness, flavor and quality that you get at Shashy’s Mulberry Street restaurant.

Easy on the Pocketbook Nothing served at The Bullet is too pricey. The menu prices range from $3.50 for the tomato sandwich to $8.95 for the beef tenderloin or grilled chicken sandwich. All said, the reasonably-priced menu allows everyone to get an affordable lunch for under $10.

Shashy’s at The Bullet has plans to start offering breakfast soon, with items like scrambled egg casserole and cheese biscuits, and to expand the existing lunch menu during the cooler fall months to include more hot dishes like red beans and rice. Shashy’s will be at The Bullet until at least mid-December (with an option to renew the lease to stay another six months), so there is plenty of time to check them out even if you don’t work downtown. Trust us, you’ll be glad you did.
