In the beginning of my research I looked closely at Art installations which had a relationship to water, the research I found was very visually strong. I came across a group of anonymous art troupers which go by the name of ‘Luzinterruptus’ which in Spanish stands for ‘interrupted light’.

They say ”the idea behind their work is very simple: attract attention through light in public places so that they can be understood by the people who pass by at that very moment, without the need for instructions”. I believe there work is really challenging and memorable and this type of strategy I would like to apply to my own piece of design.

As well as researching online I also conducted further research in to the urban environment; on one occasion I took a trip in to London/south bank and visited the TATE modern. During that time I discovered a lot of architecture base around urban development as well as coming across a light installation called ‘Smarties’ just underneath the Shard. This was placed under a bridge in order to give the display a constant shading from the sun in order to see its full potential.

Once having ventured into London I then visited the Science museum and came across many visually impacting designs; one of which was a very large 3D mapped model of the globe, It hung over the publics head as a projection display. It was very remarkable however the one disadvantage was you could not get close to it or interact with it. In addition to this find I also noticed a towering model of a atom whilst at the museum; that’s construction looked very engaging and almost playful. From all my past research collect I began to focus in gamification and light in the urban environment.

During the development process of my idea, I looked back on all the urban research I had previously gained and studied the look, feel and effect of images I had captured and questioned why these objects are designed the way they are in order to balance with the environment they are in.

I wanted my product to look and ‘blend’ to the environment well, however that being said I wanted it to look disguise; yet noticeable, for it’s ‘magical’ feature of light. I came up with this structured shape as a type of ‘podium’ which the public could approach willingly, It would have to look engaging and inviting in order for people to become curious.

The three main functions of my design are 1 ) the touch screen - this is what the user will tap in to first in order for the product to understand who you are from a demographic perspective. 2 ) is once this is completed the next stage is to place your water carrier at the base of the construction, this is where you would place the water you collected and part 1) would be able to measure the volume of water and its value; and 3) its outcome would be a result of both stages 1) and 2). The product would decipher a ticket of informing showing you the relationship between your water and a valued object in everyday life for example x amount is equal to a pair of shoes from y.

During my experimentation I carried out a test in where I took a basic vase and put it under the sink whilst I was waiting for the water to heat up, as a result I notice my vase almost more than a 3rd of the way full. This is a large amount of fresh clean water which is being waste. So in order to pursue this idea of capturing water I wanted to gamify this process and ensure people came together to understand water and its value.

The process I came up with was to enable others to see ‘my experiment’ I had to design a suitable device which transported the water which an individual would collect this design would have to be purposely durable and expandable in order to hold just over a ‘vase’ full of water.

When looking at designs I research into the ways in which water can be transported sufficiently without

causing disruption to everyday life. One of the obvious and well know ways of transporting water would be the example above; large plastic water dispensers are used for many reasons most commonly when camping.

The design to the far left is more suitable for travelling, it has been well thought out and incorporated a comfortable handle. Having taken these functionality in to account I began designing my own type of water carrying system. This is a simple vector in its basic form. I started with a very structured bag however over time began to change the shape to allow a more ‘expandable’ solution.

The handle at the top ensures you can comfortably transport your wasted water to its destination. This design works based on the function of a ‘hot water bottle’ It is stable and flexible without being solid.

To begin participating in this collection I began thinking about different ways to bring attention to my service. There are a number of possibilities this one example, if my service travelled I would advertise it appropriately and in addition there would be a website address for participation. Once having signed up, you should receive one of your water carriers, you can order as many as you’d like in many different colours.

Once having received your water carrier(s) you are asked to begin collecting all the fresh water which is wasted whilst leaving the tap running. Here is an example of collecting your wasted water. This images explains a way to capture your water before a bath, by placing your collector in the bath whilst your waiting for the water to heat up insures you have collected and saved it. Now the ‘fun’ begins you locate your local podium and find out how much you have saved and how valuable your water really is in relation to your lifestyle.

Having completed your demographic menu and understood the value of water in relation to your everyday life you must then put it back into the environment where it would be used again to benefit the urban surroundings.

Above is an example of my product service in the environment. This drop back is of the river Thames; as well as a close up of one of Londons boat tours. This picture was taken on a research trip to London.

Whilst I was developing this concept of capturing water, I was still very interested in some of the work I’d come across previously in my research in relation to colour and light. In order to bring my service to life and also attract awareness, I would have imagined my product to capture water at ‘night’; due to the fluorescent colour palette. I could imagine this would be a nice place for communities to come together and discuss the value of water, this would give way to many other ‘pros’ about this service, It would enable people to integrate with other

people you probably wouldn’t usual speak to and engaging in conversations, this would help build the community. Another alternative to this product is that of the sponsorship from other companies in order to endorse the value of water would help other brands get noticed.

For example one ticket could generate and offer from the demographic selection and say the volume of water you collected is equal to = £ 10 this is worth more than a scarf at H & M (advertising the value water).

This would enable people to understand how much they waste and how they over look the value of water and what it equates, more importantly money of food/ water bills/ petrol etc. There are many options to be considered as to what this machine could give you .
