Heterosexual couples are granted specific rights and responsibilities. LGBIQ citizens pay their taxes yef are treated like secand-class cifizens. Ihis injustice must be (and I'm ceftain at some point will be) treated equalty under the law. 18. Did you publicly oppose Proposition 8? Are you active in the campaign to repeal Proposition 8? lf so, what activities did you engage in (i,e. fundraising, rallies, etc.)? (X) Yes ONo Absolutely. Prop 8 did nothing but institutionalize discrimination. lt was a sad day for our "enlightened" state of Califomia when it passed. Unfoftunately, lwas nof as active in the No on I campaigns as I could have been due to my commitments with the West $acramento Gang lnjunction and LULAC. I regret this. 19. Do you support local funding for HIV/AIDS services, including, but not limited to, needle-exchange programs? Why do you think needle-exchange programs are important to the LGBTQ community? (X) Yes ONo The HIV/AIDS epidemic was man-made. lt could have been minimized or avoided had our elected officials done something earty on. lt was pure discimination against the LGBTQ community that let it get out of hand. I support needle-exchange because it's proven to reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS - and we need to take every step to do just that. I'm glad there is such a program in Sacramento County. 20. Do you support an age-appropriate public school cuniculum that teaches awareness and sensitivity regarding sexual orientation and gender identity? (X) Yes ONo Yes, yes, yes. Scfroo/ years are such trying and emotional times for childrcn that impact them for the rest of their lives. lf an LGBTQ student is fearful or otherwise distracted due to an instructors or another student's lack of sensitivity or awareness, the LGBTQ student cannot focus on leaming. This has long-term con$equences. lt can lead to low self-esteem and possibly even suicide. 21. Do you support the repeal of the Defense of Maniage Act (DOMA) of 1996 which prohibits federal recognition of same-sex couples in the United States? {)Yes (x) No I am thilled that President Obama and Congress are talking about repealing DOMA. If was discrimination, pure and simple. 22. Under DOMA, Gay and Lesbian foreign partners of legal U.S. citizens are not recognized for immigration purposes. Would you support federal legislation to allow Gay nationals to bring their partners into the United $tates under the same criten'a as heterosexual nationals? (X) Yes ONo Again, it's a simple matter of equity. 23.
