Advance equal rights for all people regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity

Support public policies that advance lesbian, gay, bisexual, & transgender (LGBT) equality at all

levels of govemment

Elect qualified, openly LGBT people to public office as well as other Democratic Party candidates who

support LGBT equality

Work within the Democratic Party to advance LGBT equality and full recognition of LGBT families

Educate the public at large about LGBT issues and concerns

Promote the Democratic Party's message of economic justice and social equality for all

Absolutely. I have been active in promoting equality and civil rights since 1967. I've been a leader inthe League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC, the largest Latino civil rights and advocacygroup in the Untied Sfafes) for over 20 years. ln this country, we are far from having equal rights,economic justice, and social equ$ for all. Only through hard work, alliance building, and shining thelight of justice on inequality will we achieve fhese goals.

As an example, I am a leader in fighting the West Sacramento gang injunction that unfairly and

without due process fargets "suspected" gang members and imposes serious civil rights restrictionson them. Once suspected, the targets have no recourse. I have been leading the effort to overtumthis injunction in the courts.

I was also active in the campaign to elect a childhood fiend to judgeship in San Francisco County.He is gay and cunently works for the California Supreme Court. Unfortunately, he lost in a runoffelection.

An inequality for one group is an inequaliU for all, and I am committed to full equality.

2. ldentify one of the goals of the mission statement and elaborate how you have helped to achieve oneof the objectives.

I could site several gaals of the mrbsion statement that l've supported. However, the one l've workedon most is "...economic justice and social equ$ for all." As / sfafed above, I've been a leader in

LULAC for 23 yeae. I've even formed new LULAC councils when I felt that the established councilswere not as active as they should be on civil rghfs r'ssues. My fight againsf the West Sacramentogang injunction is one example of this.

However, I must mention that (as I mentioned above) have suppofted an LGBT candidate for judge(fttlichael Nava of San Fnncisco) even having evenfs to raise campaign funds for him here in hishome tattn of Sacramenta in partnership with the Democratic Party of Sacramento County.
