However good Brora, Nairn or Golspie may be, the jewel in the Highland golfing crown is definitely Royal Dornoch Golf Club.Universally rated as being in the world's top 20 golf courses, Royal Dornoch is unique among the great links of Scotland in that it hasnever hosted the British Open. Not a reflection of its quality, this is solely because of Dornoch's remote location. However remote itmay be though, this links is a must play course on any golfing trip to Scotland.

Though golf at Dornoch we are reliably told, dates back to 1616, Royal Dornoch Golf Club itself is quite young in comparison withsome other Scottish clubs. In 1877, the Sutherland Golfing Society applied for permission to play golf over the Dornoch Links.Permission was granted on November 9th and so the Dornoch Golf Club was born. It was not until 1906, with a decree by KingEdward VII, that the club became known as Royal Dornoch Golf Club. Old Tom Morris was invited to design "nine proper golf holes" in1886 and with the addition of a further nine holes, Dornoch boasted an 18-hole layout of 5,960 yards by 1904. The course has sinceundergone minor changes with respect to bunker positions and length and now offers a championship challenge of 6,732 yards.

The quality of Royal Dornoch is immediately apparent from the array of golfers, who have graced its fairways. Vardon, Locke, Norman,

Crenshaw and Watson are among the many to have been impressed with the challenge. When Tom Watson played the course prior towinning the Open at Muirfield in 1980, he remarked that the experience was "the most fun I've ever had on a golf course". Even givenDornoch's remote location, it is perhaps unjust that the only major championship hosted here was the British Amateur in 1985, whenJose Maria Olazabal came to Royal Dornoch in defence of his title. Unfortunately though, he caught the wind in an evil mood and shotan opening 86.

A stiff but fair test of golf, Royal Dornoch rewards the thinker on top of their game and while the visitor rarely uses the championshiplayout, the regular 6,514-yard layout is more than a match for most. The greens are large and undulating and while there is room offthe tee, the placement of your drive deserves much thought due to the wind and pin positions. In the mould of most traditional links,the course goes practically straight out and back, with the angle changing subtly on each hole. And while little is hidden at RoyalDornoch, it requires a golfer playing at their best to see it all and adjust their strategy.

Directions

Dornoch is 45 miles north of Inverness. Two miles after the bridge across the Dornoch Firth turn right off the A9: two miles straightinto Dornoch. From the Town Square turn right and then, after 100yds, left up Golf Road to the Clubhouse.

Nairn West, and Nairn Dunbar golf courses are only 1 mile away. Elgin, Forres, Boat of Garten, Grantown,Inverness, Tainand Royal Dornoch golf clubs are all within a 1 hour drive.

A relatively easy opening to the round. Bunkers guard the entrance to the greenon either side, and a well placed tee shot simplifies the approach.

2 - Ord



Plateau green (one of many) with steep fall on both sides and rear. Two deepbunkers guard front of green, with a grassy mound between, which diverts s shortshot into either bunker.

3 - Earl's Cross



Fairway slopes from left to right, with mound in centre to carry drive into one ofthree bunkers on right edge of fairway. Ridge with bent grass crosses fairway 30yards short of green, which slopes from left to right. Bunker at left of entranceand another 6 or 7 yards right of middle of green. Long grass at back of green.

4 - Achinchanter



Fairway again slopes from left to right. On right there is a steep fall of 10ft. torough grass between 4th and adjacent fairway. Whin bushes all along left offairway. Plateau green guarded by two bunkers on left and two at foot of slope onright. Undulating green sloping sharply on right and rear into long grass.

5 - Hilton



Fairway is 40ft. below tee level. Hillside on left is covered with bent and whins.Slight slope on fairway from left to right where there are three bunkers andseveral mounds from 7 to 10ft. covered with rough grass. Plateau green is kidneyshaped and guarded by bunkers on front slope. Sharp fall on right of green tobare lie, and slope at rear into long grasses. Two bunkers on left of green withgrassy hollow between. Position of flag dictates best line from tee.

6 - Whinny Brae



Plateau green built into hillside. Thick whins on hillside on left, also 3 bunkers onleft edge of green. Large bunker at right of slope at entrance to green. Steep fallof 12ft. at rear and right of green.

7 - Pier



Heather and whins on left of fairway, and whins on right. Two bunkers on left atdrive length. Bunkers on left and right guarding green. Whins 10 yards fromputting surface on left and long grass at rear.

8 - Dunrobin



A slightly dog-leg hole to left with a steep slope diagonally across fairway about200 yards from tee down to lower level 50ft. below. Grassy and whin coveredquarry on right of fairway at drive length. Green is saucer shaped and guarded by4 bunkers one 15 yards short and right of green, two on left edge and one onright edge.

9 - Craiglaith



Plateau green except at front where three bunkers guard green at edge of puttingsurface. Another bunker at foot of steep slope on left. Sea hazard on left forhooked tee shot; whin bushes on right for slice. Long grass at foot of slope torear of green. Height of slopes 10ft. on left and rear and 6ft. on right.

10 - Fuaran



Plateau green except at front where three bunkers guard green at edge of puttingsurface. Another bunker at foot of steep slope on left. Sea hazard on left forhooked tee shot; whin bushes on right for slice. Long grass at foot of slope torear of green. Height of slopes 10ft. on left and rear and 6ft. on right.

11 - A'chlach



Green bordered on right by shallow grassy gully and on left by steep slope 10ft.deep. Large bunker at foot of slope on left entrance. Another bunker cuts slightlyinto green halfway along on right.

12 - Sutherland



The direction of the tee shot is important at this dog-leg (R to L) hole. Largegrassy mound left of centre at front of green, and bunker on right presenting anarrow approach. Green falls away to large grassy hollow beyond and slightly leftof grassy mound at right.

13 - Bents



Green guarded by 7 bunkers and steep fall of 15ft. to a grassy hollow betweenfront and midway bunkers on right.

14 - Foxy



Well named "Foxy". The only hole without a bunker, it has a plateau green on apromontory broad on right and narrowing to some 8 or 9 yards on left. The steeprise at the front of the green varies from 5ft. on the left to 10ft. on the right. Theleft of the fairway is a wide expanse of mounds with bent grassy and mossypatches. Right of the fairway are several grassy promontories jutting out towardsthe fairway and guarding the right of the green.

15 - Stulaig



Thick bent guards left of fairway which has a large grassy mound in thecentre some 18ft. high. Another plateau green with slopes at front andrear.

16 - High Hole



Whins to right of fairway. Large grassy quarry 50ft. on left of fairway. Steep slopein fairway at drive length, and green is guarded by several mounds covered withrough grass.

17 - Valley



Thick whins on both sides of fairway. Diagonal slope across fairway 180 yardsfrom tee down to fairway level 40ft. below. Plateau green is some 15ft. abovefairway level at front, and is guarded by a bunker on the left and three on theright.

18 - Home



Fairway guarded by rough grass on right and whins on left. 30 yards short ofgreen are two bunkers on left and one on right. A shallow grass gully 3ft. deepand 5 yards wide guards front and right of green.
